Dear All,

I would simply like to thank all of you at the Debian team for the
simply amazing job done with Debian 12. It is simply by far and away
the best distribution/OS system I have ever used on any computer. That
is since the MS DOS days.

Please never stop :)

Kind regards,

Congratulations on Bookworm, and thank you.

2023-06-11 Thread David Peacock
Hey there folks,

TL;DR, Congratulations on Bookworm, and thank you so much!

It's been many years since I ran pure Debian and not some derivative, but
recently for uninteresting and varied reasons, perhaps even whimsy, I
decided to see how the upstream project was doing.

On Friday 9th of June 2023 I decided to go ahead and download the latest
stable, and lo and behold I saw that I was one day away from the new
release. When I read that non-free was integrated into the installation
experience I could not be happier to know that install would likely be a
walk in the park.

Yesterday I waited with excitement for the images to become available and
wasted no time installing.

I'm delighted to report that my install went absolutely cleanly and as far
as I can tell so far all of the hardware on my PC is working without any
configuration effort on my part.

Amazing. :-)

Perhaps this email should have gone to debian-user, but really the essence
of my message is one of congratulations to the entire project team of
Debian for making what I believe to be a seismic shift of a release. My
sentiments felt appropriate here. Apologies if this was the wrong choice.

You folks absolutely crushed it. Thank you, so very much.

I'm going to poke around and see where I can contribute going forward.
It's been literally decades since I made any contributions to Debian, I
look forward to being active. It's good to be back.

Best,
David Peacock

Thank you

TL;DR: Maintainers do not have to work on any particular problem, but
they do not get to block others' work. First step is to figure out the
fix for a problem, propose the fix, and eventually get to an NMU
 proposal.

Hi.
I agree with Branden that engaging with Chuck may not be the most
productive use of my time.
However, I think the above question is a great one, and regardless of
whether my answer is useful to Chuck, I think it might be generally
useful.

Fast forward to April 2023:

I am a casual user (helping someone to resolve some unrelated issue with their
Debian 11 installation)
and I can't use the default debian-11.6.0-amd64-netinst.iso installer
(sha256sum e482910626b30f9a7de9b0cc142c3d4a079fbfa96110083be1d0b473671ce08d) on
Xen.

I just wanted to say big thanks to Chuck Zmudzinski
for documenting this on a Xen wiki[1] - I could quickly

find this info using a search engine buy asking for "debian 11 install crash
xen"
and it saved me hours of heads scratching and troubleshooting.

Also big thanks to Phillip Susi for digging deep
enough to find a root cause of this problem.

I can see that using Debian cloud installer allows me to get past this
particular
problem, but I get dropped to the initramfs prompt due to rootfs missing (Hope
to figure
this out).

One small note, my naïve attempt to say "install nousb" as a response
to the "boot: " prompt as advised by the installer Help page did not
change anything.

This is just a thank-you note, feel free to respond off-list if needed.

2014-12-05 Thread Tomas Tintera
Dear Debian developers, maintainers and all you others investing your
valuable time tothe project,

I just want to thank you all for your great work.

During the last ten years, it has been facilitating my everyday life
and work with about 7-8 computers/phones of me and my family/friends.
In that period, Debian have always been my choice.

Debian is a living proof of the fact that it works - that we can build
a free operating system independent of commercial interests. And not
only can we build it, we are able to keep it living and growing to
everyone's delight and benefit - even in the not very favorable
ecosystem of big companies, mass media and law makers all trying to
thwart your work. It is a sight for my eyes.

I love the philosophy, the legal approach to the structure of the
project, I love that we have DFSG and that you take time to verify
that Debian complies to it. I like having the quite thorough policy
manual, ensuring your consistence among that many DDs.

I love your democratic approach to making decisions. And finally,
I like most of your decisions.

I like Debian's aspiration of being the universal operating system,
running on every architecture ever invented and containing every piece
of maintained free software. I think it is almost there, which is
remarkable. This is your primacy: no other operating system have
achieved that state, free software or not.

That said, I wish you a bunch of helping hands, happy users and
pleasure from your work.

With love,
Tomas trosos Tintera

PS. I stay with you despite of the unpopular decisions. They tend to
be trifling, as long as Debian stays democratic and software free.
I appreciate your work.

Thank you for apt!

2005-05-15 Thread michael king kong
First off i would like to say i love Debian greatly. I love apt as
well. 15,000+ packages is simply amazing and its the main reason why
I used Debian. I would like to suggest some very simple features that
i feel would greatly improve apt.

When you are setting up a new system you have to install a number of
new pieces of software. It would be nice if you could run more than
once instance of apt.

It would also be nice if I could connect to a number of mirrors and
download from multiple sources. Maybe running a trace route to all of
the apt mirrors at install and using the top 5 or whatever closest
mirrors. Splitting up a file into multiple peaces would be nifty,
but it would add a greater level of complexity. As would a p2p model
like BitTorrent, which I would most defiantly donate my spare
bandwidth to apt. I think if there is multiple files to be
downloaded then it should only download one file from one mirror or
something to that effect, possibly going down the list of mirrors that
is sorted by distance from the computer. I am not sure how
synchronized the apt mirrors are, but I assume a number of them are
pretty stable. This would speed up the update and download process
as well as spread the bandwidth between the mirrors more evenly.

I am not sure if I download a whole new package list every time I do a
apt-get update. But it would be nice if I notified the mirror when I
last updated and then the server only responds with the new listings.
This would save a few seconds and a few k, but though seconds and k
add up.

I am not sure that everyone knows about apt-get clean, maybe an
automated system that runs apt-get clean periodically would be in
order.

Thank you for very much Debian and apt, i use it every day, and i am
not sure what i would do with out it.

peace

Re: Thank you for apt!

2005-05-15 Thread martin f krafft
First off, thank you for your compliments, Michael!

When you are setting up a new system you have to install a number
of new pieces of software. It would be nice if you could run more
 than once instance of apt.

This is a wish often voiced by our users. So far, we have not really
found the time to conceive how to implement this as it's
non-trivial and there are many design decisions involved (and we
have been busy integrating archive signatures into APT, and getting
sarge ready).

If you would like to discuss this issue further, may I suggest
taking it to the APT development list, which is
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

It would also be nice if I could connect to a number of mirrors
and download from multiple sources. Maybe running a trace route
to all of the apt mirrors at install and using the top 5 or
 whatever closest mirrors.

Well, apt-spy helps you find the fastest mirror. The main problem
with multiple connections, as I see it, is that mirrors may not all
be exactly the same. In fact, only the primary mirrors are
push-updated, and of these, only one of two exist per country -- if
at all. Thus, it would probably not make sense to connect to three
others, as they'd be too far away. After all, mirrors also exist to
lower the load on the individual server, and one of the best ways to
do this is using geography and to expect the users to choose the
closest mirror.

Secondary mirrors are updated once every 24 hours, so any two of
them may not be in sync. Of course you could just connect to find
out that it does not have the file yet, then use another mirror, but
then I doubt there would be a real benefit.

One thing we are working on is providing diffs between package
indices and packages, so that the downloads required for updates are
going to become less

Splitting up a file into multiple peaces would be nifty, but it
would add a greater level of complexity. As would a p2p model
like BitTorrent, which I would most defiantly donate my spare
bandwidth to apt. I think if there is multiple files to be
downloaded then it should only download one file from one mirror
or something to that effect, possibly going down the list of
mirrors that is sorted by distance from the computer. I am not
 sure how

Again, if you would like to discuss the technical details, please
come to the deity mailing list.

I am not sure if I download a whole new package list every time I do a
apt-get update. But it would be nice if I notified the mirror when I
last updated and then the server only responds with the new listings.
This would save a few seconds and a few k, but though seconds and k
 add up.

This is being worked on. Unfortunately, I do not have the URL handy
right now. Maybe someone else has it?

I am not sure that everyone knows about apt-get clean, maybe an
automated system that runs apt-get clean periodically would be in
 order.

Check out cron-apt.

Cheers,

2000-01-12 Thread Lanktree Davies
Hi

I am not much of a hacker and dont know quite where to say THANK YOU to all
the people who have made it possible for me to install Debian on an old
computer as a retirement project.

It has been fun, challenging and rewarding. I hope to continue with this
project and refine it further.

Thanks, and cheers from the South Pacific
