Today, after doing an upgrade, my KDE desktop is completely screwed up.
All I can see is a white background, with some red squares with a white
cross in them spread over the desktop. No widgets, no background, no menu,
no task list... nothing at all. Not even an error message.

If I press Alt+F2, the launcher window appears, but it doesn't work.
Luckily for me, Yakuake loads automatically on startup, and from there I
can launch my applications. Normal KDE applications, like KWrite or Dolphin,
seem to be working fine, so it looks like a desktop issue.

Hi,

I am using KDE 4 and after the system's upgrade I am no more able to launch
properly
KDE's configuration center ... systemsettings command. My current version of
the
package systemsettings is 4:4.4.4-1.

Output of the systemsettings command is following:

systemsettings(5807) SettingsBase::initApplication: View load error:
The
plugin 'classic_mode' uses an incompatible KDE library (4.4.4 (KDE
4.4.4)).
systemsettings(5807) SettingsBase::initApplication: View load error:
The
plugin 'icon_mode' uses an incompatible KDE library (4.4.4 (KDE
4.4.4)).

Window is rendered but it is empty. It immediately shows the error dialog
telling
me System Settings was unable to find any views, and hence has nothing to
display.
After the confirmation of the dialog I have to close the window because there is
nothing what I can do in it.

I've tried to downgrade the systemsettings package to the previous version
4:4.4.3-1
and it WORKS just fine. I've used for downagrading dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/...
command.

Thanks for figuring it out and have a nice day.

Michal Wirth

I just did an apt-get dist-upgrade on my system. But after rebooting,
my KDE desktop is totally messed up. Only the binary clock widget was
showing, with the rest of them as red X boxes. The run dialog appears
when I press its key, but actually trying to run things with it does
not work.

I can still start programs from a TTY, and Qt-based programs have
no issues. I'm typing this in Konsole. Window management features seem
to be working fine too, including virtual desktops, compositing, window
specific settings, etc.

I've tried moving ~/.kde out of the way, and logging in again, but the
fresh config still had the problem.

Unstable is pinned to allow chromium-browser to be installed only. I
also use debian-multimedia, if that's important. Thanks in advance.

Bug#585097: kde-standard: change update-notifier-kde from depends to recommends

Seconded. Nothing at all of the ramble, though.

In my case the clients are centrally updated and users suddenly getting
update notifications they cannot do anything about anyway would be annoying
at best. Especially as clients are not supposed to be upgraded locally
even by an admin.

As update-notifier-kde is not an integral component of KDE I'd like to ask
you to demote this dependency. I know from other meta-packages in the Gnome
set that demotion of Gnome components is disliked (like gdm, when kdm's
installed), but in this case that's a package added by Debian anyway.

Kind regards and thanks for considering,
Philipp Kern

Bug#585097: change update-notifier-kde from depends to recommends

2010-06-14 Thread Patrice Pillot

Hi,

I very strongly support Alan's proposal.

Since update-notifier-kde logically depends on update-notifier-common, this
implies that installing kde-standard to get a coherent standard desktop
environment will
1) trigger periodic edits of /etc/motd (through
/etc/update-motd.d/90-updates-available)
2) consequently sporadically slow down every first-login-of-the-day to the
host
3) display a notification popup on the first-logged user's desktop about
available updates, whether notifying this user is relevant or not.

Such a behaviour might be sensible (albeit this is disputable) on a machine
always used by a single user but it is quite unbearable on a real multi-user
host where ordinary users do not have administrative privileges.

Thanks in advance,

pp

Package: kde
Severity: minor

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
Hi, in order to expose the problem please consider the following
configuration: I have two computer with a NIS/NFS system. Using KDE, the
secondary computer play audio if and only if the main group of the
logged user is audio. The server (main computer) has not this problem:
the logged user can play audio even if him main group is scanner.
Moreover, on the secondary computerm, the user that perform a login in a
text shell (ctrl-alt-f2 and so on) has not this problem: he can play
audio even if the main group is scanner. I have this problem after the
dist-upgrade of the last Sunday (13th of June 2010), the same upgrade
that causes the white desktop.

The original problem should no longer be there if you have libkdecore5 at

files might be corrupt due to previous breakage. Try removing them (might
result in some data loss, you may want to backup them first):

Bug#585646: konqueror: does not display html

This probably means that /usr/lib/kde4/kio_http.so does not load.

and logs this on the console:

This is one of the reasons why severity of the bug was downgraded.

sometimes it doesn't save X11 selection, I need to select the text once

Version: kde-desktop
Severity: grave

Justification: renders package unusable

After installing the latest upgrades to Squeeze, I have lost my KDE
desktop. While KDE starts, I have no taskbar nor menus. The desktop does
not respond to clicks or mouse moves of any kind.

I did note that at least one application (iceweasel) seems to have
started so it looks like the session is being restored. However I can't
do anything.

I tried creating a new user account and logging in to it, but again
failed to get a working KDE desktop. I also tried purging and
reinstalling but with no luck there either.

I have temporarily switched to Gnome to be able to use my computer.

Package: kdm
Version: 4:4.4.3-1
Severity: normal

My users regulalry switch between several keyboard language layouts during the
workday. In version 4:4.3.4-5+b1 there was a flag present in the kdm
open locked screen-dialog indicating the keyboard layout, which you could
press in order to change the layout, that flag is not there anymore in 4.4.3-1.

This has led some of my users to not being able to open up their locked
screens, because they do not remember what keyboard layouyt they had before
going off to lunch.

Hi, i'm using nepomuk to index my home directory, i wish to exclude
some directories (maildir, caches, etc), but nepomuk does not follow
 the exclude directories setting

i set the severity to important because it makes my system almost
unusable, sorry if i made a mistake

I don't see how it makes your system unusable. If you cannot dedicate enough
system resources to nepomuk, disable it. So this bug is normal if it is valid.

as a workaround, i uninstall virtuoso

Disable strigi in nepomuk systemsettings.
