Bug#301001: catastrophe

2005-04-16 Thread Wolfgang Jeltsch
The original subject was bad. I should have written: "KMail freezes very
often" in stead of: "KMail freezes sometimes".

I thought, emptying my trash folder with over 15,000 mails might reduce the
time such a KMail freezes takes but then I had the problem that emptying the
folder took **very** long. 8.5 hours(!!!) after starting the emptying
process there were still over 13,900(!!!) e-mails left. I should note that
while emptying the trash folder, KMail consumed approximately 90% of CPU
time.

I killed KMail via xkill and deleted the e-mails by deleting the contents of
trash/cur. Now KMail still seems to suffer from the freezes.

This bug should get high priority since, as I've shown, it is very
serious.

Thanks.
Wolfgang

Bug#301001: kmail: freezes sometimes

2005-03-23 Thread Wolfgang Jeltsch
Package: kmail
Version: 4:3.3.2-0pre1
Severity: important

KMail sometimes hangs for a certain amount of time (maybe about 30
seconds but it's possible that I err here). I think, this problem
started after upgrading to this very version. The freezes happen in
various situations - when sending an e-mail, when scrolling through a
mail message in the main window, etc., etc. KMail doesn't crash, it's
just that I have to wait for a rather long time until KMail continuous
to work as expected again.

I don't know what other information to provide at the moment. If you
want more, please tell me exactly what information you want and how to
provide it.

Bug#289925: konqueror: ignores default font size setting

I used Konqueror -> Settings -> Configure Konqueror... -> Appearance -> Font
size.  I didn't recognize Konqueror -> Settings -> Configure Konqueror... ->
Fonts. If the latter is the place to configure the font size, what is the
Appearance -> Font size setting for? Why isn't the actual font size changed
when changing Appearance -> Font size?

In addition, the font size is too large as I already mentioned. After
experimenting a bit with the X server's -dpi switch I've come to the
conclusion that Konqueror's HTML viewer doesn't honor the X server's dpi
setting but always assumes 100 dpi instead. So if you start the X server
with -dpi 100, Konqueror works correctly. If you start the X server without
the -dpi switch (as it is the default with KDM in Debian now), you get a
setting of 75 dpi. This results in the HTML text being displayed (100 dpi -
75dpi) / 75 dpi = 33 % too large and you have to set Fonts -> Medium font
size to 8 in order to get a font size of approximately 11.

Best wishes,
Wolfgang

As far as I know, bitmap fonts are disabled at my site so it is not a bitmap
font I use.

I have written a simple HTML file where no fixed size is specified. Here it
is:

This text shows that there is a bug in Konqueror.

The problem applies here, too.

Maybe I should say that changing the font size via the "magnifying-glass +"

What further information do you need?

I tried it out.

Paragraph changes were not displayed when I started to compose a new message.
I inserted some typical HTML stuff (list items), saved the message and
started to edit it again. Now empty lines were shown at paragraph changes.

In addition, I discovered that when you create unnumbered list items, nothing
special appears in the plain text version. List items are handled like
ordinary paragraphs. In my opinion, there should be something like
indentation combined with a bullet replacement like an asterisk to make clear
that we have list items. (Evolution used to do it this way.)

Paragraph changes are still represented by just a line break in the plain text
version of the mail.

I still couldn't find a possibility to insert an ordinary line break.

Best wishes,
Wolfgang

Bug#289551: konqueror: displays wrong fonts

2005-01-09 Thread Wolfgang Jeltsch
Package: konqueror
Version: 4:3.3.2-0pre1
Severity: normal

I had set all fonts in the KControl font selection except the monospace
font to Bitstream Vera Sans. Konqueror's default font was set to
Bitstream Vera Sans, too.

I changed the fonts in KControl to some Nimbus thing and then back to
Bitstream Vera Sans. But now normal text (not headlines etc.) was
displayed with a serif font. I changed the Konqueror font to Bitstream
Vera Sans Mono and Dingbats but neither of them resulted in the expected
font change.

After finally changing Konqueror's font back to Bitstream Vera Sans, I
saw the sans serif font again. But when I reduced the font size via the
toolbar, I saw again a serif font.

I cannot see the reason for this behavior. It seems to me that there is
a notable amount of brokeness in Konqueror's font handling.

It seems that installing this KMail package means also installing a lot of

How do I correctly attach pixmaps? I read about this some time ago but am not
able to find the page describing this topic anymore. A Google search on

I tried it with the Marble (Marmor in German) theme and the problem is there

Bug#289153: kmail: bad support for paragraph changes and linebreaks

2005-01-07 Thread Wolfgang Jeltsch
Package: kmail
Version: 4:3.3.1-3
Severity: normal

If I compose a new message and press Enter with the cursor in the
message body, a new paragraph is created. This means that in the HTML
source code the sequence is inserted. In the plain text version,
just a newline character is inserted.

In my opinion, this behavior concerning plain text is not very nice. It
is usual practice to insert a blank line to denote the beginning of a
new paragraph since otherwise you cannot distinguish between paragraph
changes and ordinary linebreaks. (An "ordinary linebreak" would occur,
for example in this text:

Best regards,
    Wolfgang Jeltsch)

On the other hand, KMail *displays* the HTML paragraph changes ()
by inserting a blank line. But this is ugly, in my opinion. KMail
should use a smaller gap between the paragraphs. Inserting blank lines
is a solution for plain text where no smaller gaps are possible.

So pressing Enter should result in in the HTML source code which
should be displayed via a small gap between the paragraphs, and it
should result in a blank line in the plain text version.

In addition, it should be possible to insert ordinary linebreaks. These
should result in just a linebreak in the plain text version of the mail
and in in the HTML version. Paragraph changes are bad for things
like the "Best regards" example above. It would be bad to have a blank
line or even a smaller gap between "Best regards," and "Wolfgang Jeltsch",
and in addition it would be semantically incorrect to have both strings in
different paragraphs.

Bug#286340: konsole: ordering of entries in Konsole's menues

2004-12-19 Thread Wolfgang Jeltsch
Package: konsole
Version: 4:3.2.3-1.sarge.2
Severity: minor

I cannot see the strategy according to which the session entries in
Konsole's Kicker menu and Session menu are ordered. I thought that
alphabetical order would be used but a certain session whose name
doesn't come first according to alphabetical order always appears at the
top of the list. This happens even when I delete this session and
create a new one with the same name---it is always on the top.

In addition, why is there a line between the first and the second entry
in the Kicker menu?

Bug#286342: konsole: default sessions cannot be deleted

2004-12-19 Thread Wolfgang Jeltsch
Package: konsole
Version: 4:3.2.3-1.sarge.2
Severity: wishlist

There are lots of Konsole sessions available by default (Root Shell,
Python etc.) These cannot be deleted by an ordinary user. I don't
like this behavior. A user should always be able to create a list of
sessions which fits its needs and doesn't contain sessions he will
never need.

By the way, why are not all sessions showing up in Konsole's
configuration dialog also showing up in Konsole's Session and Kicker
menu?

Hello,

this solves the dependency problem but it contains the bug of sarge's mpeglib
which I reported, i.e., the "babble bug".

This seems to solve the problem. Alas, after having installed it, I'm no
longer able to upgrade my system via apt-get (dist-)upgrade because of broken

Why does using optimization result in this bug? Is there an error in gcc?

I've installed this. Now, everytime I want to play an MP3 file in Kaboodle,
artsd crashes with SIGILL. Is this package compiled for 686 (which is not
compatible with my architecture) or is there a different problem?

Several MP3 files are played by Kaboodle with "clicks" and distortion.
An example of such files are those under the following URLs:

I use es1371 for accessing my soundcard.

I want to add that I experienced no problems with woody and the
KDE 3.1.3 backport.

Bug#274187: kmail: doesn not exit gracefully on KDE exit

2004-09-30 Thread Wolfgang Jeltsch
Package: kmail
Version: 4:3.2.2-2
Severity: normal

When I exit KDE via the Logout*) item in the K Menu while KMail is
running, the lock file ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail/lock remains. In
addition, it may (or will?) happen that at the next start of KMail
(after deleting the lock file) the mail folders are not in the state
they have been in before the exit. Mails already deleted appear in the
inbox again (if I remember correctly), messages which were already read
are marked as unread, etc.

*) I use German localization. In German, the item is called
"Abmelden..." which corresponds to the English "Logout...". However,
I don't now exactly if the item is named "Logout..." when using the C
   locale.

additional KDE programs

2004-09-29 Thread Wolfgang Jeltsch
Hello,

what about programs written for KDE which are not part of the KDE project.
Will the sid versions of these programs have a chance to enter sarge before
its release or won't they have this chance because they depend on parts of
KDE 3.3?

Take for example K3b. Version 0.11.16 has an important bugfix but isn't
installable under sarge because it depends on kdelibs4 >= 4:3.3.0. Another
example is knoda. knoda isn't even part of sarge and the sid version also
depends on kdelibs4 >= 4:3.3.0.

Best regards,
Wolfgang

Bug#273724: kcontrol (keyboard_layout): cannot activate compose key functionality

2004-09-27 Thread Wolfgang Jeltsch
Package: kcontrol
Version: 4:3.2.2-1
Severity: normal

I go to the "Xkb options"*) tab in the keyboard_layout KControl module
and check the "Compose key" box and several subordinate boxes like "Use
menu key as compose key". After having pressed "Ok", all key presses
are ignored. (Or maybe only some key presses are ignored or key presses
are ignored only in certain situations. I don't remember exactly and I
don't want to try it right now, since I probably wouldn't be able to
finish this bug report then. :-))

After restarting KDE, the keyboard works again but no key is used as a
compose key. So the keyboard works exactly the way it had before when
no compose-key-related checkbox was checked.

If I enter
setxkbmap -option compose:ralt
or
setxkbmap -option compose:menu
manually in Konsole while KDE is running, the respective keys work as
compose keys. However, if I enter
setxkbmap -option compose:rwin
and press the right Windows key afterwards, I'm not able to enter
anything on the current Konsole anymore. If I switch to another running
Konsole, I'm able to enter characters and if I switch back to the first
Konsole, entering characters works again.

If I don't have KDE running, I'm also able to make the right Windows key
a compse key via directly using setxkbmap.

*) I use German localization. Throughout this whole bug report I will
translate the German texts back into English. The original English
   texts might differ.

Bug#272981: kde: whole GUI hangs

2004-09-23 Thread Wolfgang Jeltsch
Package: kde
Version: 4:3.1.2
Severity: normal

I started KDE. During the startup process, I pressed Alt+F2 and started
to enter an URL. While entering the URL, the list of possible
completions (certain previously entered URLs) was shown. Since KNode
belonged to my saved session, KNode was started and requested access to
the digital wallet "kdewallet". A message window popped up, telling me
that KNode wanted this access.

The KWallet message window was shown in front of the URL entering dialog
but the completion list was shown in front of the KWallet message window
although belonging to the URL entering dialog. From this point on, all
keyboard and mouse events were ignored. Neither the window manager nor
any application could be controlled via keyboard or mouse. So it was
necessary to kill processes via the "kill" command.

Bug#272848: knode: possibility to change names of attachments

2004-09-22 Thread Wolfgang Jeltsch
Package: knode
Version: 4:3.2.2-2
Severity: wishlist

If I compose a message and add an attachment to it, it is not possible
to change the (file) name of this attachment during further composing.
In contrast, KMail has this feature. I'd like to see this in KNode,
too.

Bug#271893: kwrite: KWrite doesn't show a status line.

That was the problem. "Show statusbar" was indeed deactivated. In fact, I
had searched for a possibility to activate the statusbar before, but I had
been looking only in the "View" menu.

In my opinion, "Show statusbar" should be activated by default.

Bug#271504: ksplash: black percentage indication on black background

2004-09-13 Thread Wolfgang Jeltsch
Package: ksplash
Version: 4:3.2.2-1
Severity: minor

When one chooses the default color settings, progress bars are yellow
and the color of the percentage indication (e.g., "20 %") is black.
Since the background of the progress bar in the splash screen is black,
too, the percentage indication cannot be seen until about 50 % of the
startup process are complete.
