new upstream version of libfile-sharedir-perl
Hi, libfile-sharedir-perl has a currently a grave bug because the directory layout used to store data has changed. This means the package is unusable for Perl distributions whose name contains a - and a recent Module::Install (= 0.76, released on 17 Jul 2008 and included in Lenny), see #496122. This was fixed in version 0.99_01 (also released as 1.00 without changes), which was released coordinated with Module::Install on Jul 17th. Besides updating tests and the build system (new version of Module:Install) there are only two non-bugfix changes in the new upstream release: * A new function `class_file' that will look for data files in the namespaces of parent classes (36 lines long), and * the other `*_file' functions will allow searching for any kind of path, not only regular files (changes some tests for (regular) files to tests if path exists) As these other changes are not very large, I would like to know if the release team would accept the new upstream release for Lenny instead of backporting the fixes and updates to tests. Ada packages for Lenny
This is my second post about this; the first received no answer. In Lenny, all Ada packages must transition to gnat-4.3 (new ABI, new sonames, new upstream releases of everything). Most packages made the transition before the freeze. Unfortunately, due to reasons outside my control, a few packages were still in the NEW queue when the freeze took place. They are now in unstable where they fix all remaining RC bugs, and I hereby request they be unblocked so they can make it into Lenny. These packages are: gnade - no rdeps; new upstream release from the stable branch, discussed in detail in http://lists.debian.org/debian-release/2008/08/msg00509.html. Fixes one RC bug: #471619 gnade: FTBFS: gnatmake: /build/user/gnade-1.6.1/tmp/make_gnadeodbc.adb compilation error libgtkada2 - new upstream release, new ABI. Only one rdep (below). Fixes 3 RC bugs: #421140 FTBFS: can't find file `epsf.tex'. #475743 libgtkada: not installable in sid #490418 libgtkada2: FTBFS: gnatmake: gl_h.ali incompatible ALI file, please recompile libflorist - no rdeps gnat-gps - new upstream release; only package depending on libgtkada2, and consequently uploaded only after libgtkada2 hit unstable; fixes 3 RC bugs: #445772 gnat-gps: FTBFS: unsat b-deps: libgnatprj-dev: Depends: gnat-4.2 (= 4.2.1-7) but it is not going to be installed #468310 gnat-gps: FTBFS: libgnatprj-dev no longer in unstable #493850 gnat-gps FTBFS due to hardcoded python2.4 use All packages have been in unstable for 13 days or more with no new bugs reported. I request these exceptions because: - leaving lenny with a half-done transition (some packages depending on libgnat-4.1, others depending on libgnat-4.3) would completely break Debian as a consistent Ada development platform; not to mention that the RC bugs mentioned above are still in lenny today; - removing the packages from lenny altogether would be a disservice to users and would greatly reduce the appeal Debian currently has for Ada programmers (Debian is the technology leader in this area). - the reasons for missing the freeze were outside my control as the libraries were in NEW when the freeze took place. - As I read them, the published freeze rules say nothing specific against new upstream releases. I am willing to re-upload these packages to testing-proposed-updates if you think this is necessary. Also I am willing to amend the packages or provide additional details if the information here is insufficient for you to make a decision. I don't want to invest extra time over the regular maintenance of the package, which excludes the backports route to my understanding. Real scientists use testing or unstable anyway, I tend to say, for exactly this reason. R/qtl is at the brink of current scientific developments. So maybe you are right in suggesting to remove anything that is intrinsically not stable from stable. Maybe it should go into volatile, instead. Wether you call it backports or volatile, you are suggesting to split Debian-Med and Debian-Science from the main distribution, something that we are all strongly working against, in order to strengthen the distribution as a whole. I am CCing to Debian-Med to hear what they say. My personal opinion is to just go for it because it is where the field is. Should the field be doing crap, then so be it, it is not Debian's fault. Since R-qtl is an R package, it cannot do any damage to Debian as a whole and render stable unstable in any way. Please allow ext3grep in lenny (freeze unblock or via t-p-u)
Hi, currently ext3grep isn't part of lenny, mainly because of bad timing between me and the other co-maintainer; it was also blocked by RC bug #491621. Version 0.8.0-1 has now been in sid for almost two weeks without a bug, so I'm primarily asking here if the release team would concede a freeze unblock for it. I'm anyway aware that the team rightly doesn't like unblock for new upstream version, so I have already backported the fix for #491621 in a t-p-u revision (0.6.0-1+lenny1, whose debdiff to 0.6.0-1 is attached here) as a fallback option to have it in lenny. Patch was picked from upstream svn, it only contains inode_size adjustments and due changes to related groups/blocks management. I'm anyway more confident with 0.8.0-1, as it fixed a bunch of other possible issues, and is mainly the sane evolution of initial ext3grep draft into a more mature project. NMU ncurses via testing-proposed-updates to fix #319554 ?
Summary: xterm-color's terminfo in ncurses-base is wrong: it is \177 rather than \E[3~ as specified in the relevant Debian policy. #319554. Would the release team and maintainer welcome an NMU to fix this ? I wrote two weeks ago that I would offer an NMU and I have had no response other than a content-free dissent from Thomas Dickey (who is not ncurses maintainer and who is also wrong and terse to the point of opacity - see below). I see the version in unstable has a new upstream version so I assume that we've essentially forked this package now ? Or, Daniel, do you plan to request a freeze exception for the latest updates ? Why is this more than the most trivial question ? - Why spend effort on such a trivial bug ? Because new Macs' default terminal emulator gives a terminal offering TERM=xterm-color. These systems conform in every respect to the Debian policy for backspace/delete handling. However things do not work if (for example) you run screen on the Debian machine because screen sees the wrong value for kdch1 in terminfo. This, macos$ ssh -t [EMAIL PROTECTED] screen is a very common case. Summary of the `dispute' Points in favour of changing (kdch1=\E[3~): * Debian policy 9.8 says that The xterm terminfo entry should have ESC [ 3 ~ for kdch1, just as for TERM=linux and TERM=vt220. This text was written before xterm even had colour support (look at the surrounding text which mentions rsh and telnet but not ssh!) and clearly should be read to apply to the profusion of new xterm-* types. The discussion in 9.8 clearly contemplates TERM=xterm as a thing not only specified or used by Debian systems but also as a thing in general. Furthermore as the author of the policy I can confirm that the intent is not limited only to the idea that Debian systems should follow the policy and that only TERM values actually set by modern and unmodified Debian systems should be covered. This backspace policy has gradually been permeating the universe, thankfully. Therefore this change is as mandated by policy. * It makes ssh -t debianhost screen work from MacOS X Macs, old or nonstandard Linux systems (including IIRC some old Debian systems) which set TERM=xterm-color. * Even on systems which have the `-' key mapped to ^H, it does no harm to the processing of `-' keystrokes since the stty erase setting dominates. From the bug log, points which have been provided in favour of keeping it as it is: * Someone in 1996 committed the error (kdch1=\177) to FreeBSD CVS giving `updates' as the commit message. Obviously they knew best and we should not disregard their expertise. * It may be the case that the TERM=xterm-color setting advertised is wrong in some other way for some of the terminal clients which use it. * xterm-color `does not correspond to any terminal type that is valid for Debian' (whatever that means) or `there _are_ no terminals that match it in Debian'. * A terminal advertising TERM=xterm-color following the Debian keyboard policy might find that their `Delete right' key stops working (another manifestation of the way that the Debian keyboard policy accepts the tradeoff that systems which do not follow the policy may work suboptimally). * I am rude and `insist on creating incorrect [bug] reports'. Advice re gdebi
It looks like the problems with the quality of gdebi's GUI interfaces are persisting. There are currently two quite severe bugs open against the gdebi binary package one of which is clearly RC. gdebi's command line feature is important for my automated package testing system, autopkgtest, which I have just been able to get going again running on testing at home precisely because gdebi is back in testing. So I am keen to keep the gdebi command line tool (in the gdebi-core binary package) in lenny. At some point it will be necessary to bail on the gui functionality. Is there a problem with having the sources to gdebi in lenny produce the non-working gdebi binary package, which should not be in lenny if it continues to be useless ? Or should we disable the gdebi binary package build for now and reupload when it can be fixed ? Ian. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? I doubt this is a regression from the previous state; they were probably never using symbol versioning. Ok, thank you; I scheduled the binNMUs now, which are mostly ready now, and will migrate the new version next. How is the heimdal transition going? Are all the hints in place? I though you had to put all the packages that are to go in together on the same hint line. heimdal is already hinted, the only remaining problem is that cyrus-sasl2-heimdal-dbg gets broken: The following packages have unmet dependencies: cyrus-sasl2-heimdal-dbg: Depends: cyrus-sasl2-dbg (= 2.1.22.dfsg1-22) but it is not going to be installed E: Broken packages This is a serious bug in cyrus-sasl2-heimdal. freeze exception request for chiark-utils 4.1.28
I would like to request a freeze exception for chiark-utils 4.1.28 so that lenny can have this change to chiark-named-conf: * Remove obsolete +nodebug option from calls to dig; required for BIND9 compatibility. Thanks to Ross Younger. In my view this fixes a release-critical bug in 4.1.24. Although I haven't filed that bug in the BTS I could do so if it would help document the reason for the update. If this isn't suitable of an exception because of the other bugfixes in it then I think I should upload something with only that change to testing-proposed-updates since without it chiark-named-conf does not work at all with the dnsutils version of dig, which everyone who hasn't yet is now switching to as a side-effect of moving to BIND9. But really nearly all of the changes are to chiark-named-conf itself which is currently unuseable with the dnsutils dig in lenny. The whole changelog entry for the upload is this: chiark-utils (4.1.28) unstable; urgency=high chiark-named-conf: * Remove obsolete +nodebug option from calls to dig; required for BIND9 compatibility. Thanks to Ross Younger. * Foreign zones work properly using the configuration prevailing at the end of the config file. * Warn if user specifies a zone with the trailing `.'. Other: * hexterm: Declare and document the dependency of hexterm on tcl8.4. * chiark-backup: remove snap-mount properly whether it's a dir or a leaf node (such as a symlink). -- Ian Jackson [EMAIL PROTECTED] Wed, 27 Aug 2008 23:26:55 +0100 I've included the debdiff in case it's of interest. (There was a mistaken upload numbered 4.1.27 which had me edit the distribution field to `high' in the changelog rather than the priority. If this didn't get thrown away automatically yet, please disregard it. 4.1.25 and .26 were unreleased versions for local consumption.)
