As you well know, the freeze isn't a hard freeze, so considerations
like yours are in order, but there is no categorical reasoning
against newer upstreams.

Nobody yet knows how long the freeze will last, so it might be worth
now to expend the effort to put in there a version of Git you are
ready to support for 2–3 years.

Of the issues you identify, none look critical. I'd say the
by/log-follow feature could/should go in together with the fix, but
that's diverting from upstream. jk/url-decode might be good with the
patch in pu, but the others aren't necessary, and you'll be best off
reverting them.

Hi Phillipp et al,

I have a few points that I would like to put forward with respect to this
issue.
I have two hppa boxes, a C3700 (32 bit Debian "stable") and an RP5470
(64 bit
SMP Debian "stable"). Both are stable and reliable. In hardware terms both
are built like brick outhouses!

Both have done "large" software builds (BrlCAD) without trouble.

I have both running BOINC/s...@home so they both run at 100% CPU load
24/7
when they are powered up.

The RP5470 is a headless box with 4 processors and 12 Gb of RAM. All
admin
and software loading has to be done via either the serial port(s) or the
network. The initial boot/install was done using the Debian stable netboot
image. This was fast and painless, contacts (of contacts) at HP didn't
believe I'd tried it. I was able to set the box up to serve a remote desktop
in 24 bit colour. From this point it behaved like any other Debian/KDE
machine I've seen.

This e-mail is coming to you from the C3700. The only thing that I have
seen
stressing this box is my SPAM filter :-).

According to the HP documents that I have been able to read the USB
ports on
the C3700 are intended for keyboard and mouse ONLY. I have a 4 port hub
plugged into one port. I have the mouse plugged into this hub. The mouse and
any other USB device I have tried has been reliable.

I have no experience of the older hppa hardware. Outside of hppa my
first
computers were an Amiga 500 and an 8086 laptop acquired in the early 1990's.

Short version of all of the above ramble ? From a user viewpoint both
of the
hppa boxes I own are effective and they "just work".

I don't use the RP5470 much so I am prepared to risk it carrying out
tests if
the Debian/hppa world should need this.

Cheers, Geoff.

Git for Squeeze

2010-08-14 Thread Jonathan Nieder
Hi!

I’m writing for advice. The old plan was to release with git 1.7.2.x,
but now that Squeeze is frozen I am having mild doubts.

1.7.2 has some regression fixes on top of the 1.7.1 that is in sid, in
addition to the countless tiny (lovely) usability enhancements.

The only risky bits from “git log --first-parent maint-1.7.1..maint”
I could find:

  * gitweb: Use @diff_opts while using format-patch. The resulting
“rename” patches will not be applicable with old versions of GNU
patch.

That choice was made upstream, I think with good reason.
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.version-control.git/146822/focus=146841

For squeeze, until there is configuration available to override
this change, it might be worth leaving this out.

  * jn/shortlog: respect --abbrev parameter in rev-list/log --format
callers. This caused some commands (e.g., “git commit”) to
temporarily stop abbreviating the commit IDs they print, but
I _think_ all problems of this kind have been tracked down and
fixed.

  * by/log-follow: make log --follow check all files for predecessor
of a copy, not just the unmodified ones.

The patch creates a regression and a fix is ready on-list.
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.version-control.git/153470/focus=153488

  * jk/url-decode: %-decode path part of ssh:// and file:// paths.

%-decoding is great but the +-decoding was not. There is a
patch in pu to fix that (730220de, Do not unquote + into ' '
in URLs, 2010-07-24).

  * jn/gitweb-plackup: instaweb through plackup, static files in
separate directory.

This creates a static/ subdirectory in /usr/share/gitweb;
that would be great but I do not think now is the time to
iron out all the kinks in it.

I am considering preparing a package based on v1.7.2.1 that just
reverts those topics. Does that seem sane? Other preferences?

Regards,
Jonathan

Wait. This isn't a bug either -- I misread what you were saying.

I changed the dependency to 7.0.50~ because Sven also mentioned that
debhelper (>= 7.0.50~) is required for the override targets in
debian/rules.

In addition, he just reported an FTBS caused by an upstream problem with
parallel builds, so I'll need to disable that for now and include it in
-4.

Sven recommended 0.42 instead of 0.42-1~ since either will work, and
that seemed fine.

Hmm, I thought about that, but I didn't because I didn't actually
include exactly the same changes as 2.1, and I wanted to include more
detail in the changelog entries for each change. I also wanted to keep
the changelog entries consistent (wrt format).

The NMU isn't in squeeze yet. I unblocked it during debconf but it was

Looking at the diff, debian/control{,.in} contain this:

+Standards-Version: 3.7.2

which isn't mentioned in the changelog and seems an unusual thing to
add. :)

There's also a couple of build-dependency changes between the NMU (and
possibly earlier uploads, I only checked the diff against the NMU as I'd
already unblocked that) and the new upload; were they intentional?

It's more conventional here to include the NMU changelog (so the
changelog contains -2, -2.1, -3 in that order). This avoids the large
diff but also means that the BTS automatically knows that any bugs
marked as fixed in -2.1 are fixed in -3 without them having to be
mentioned again in -3.

emacs23: proposed squeeze update (23.2+1-3)

2010-08-14 Thread Rob Browning

I just uploaded emacs23 23.2+1-3 to unstable, and I'd like to include it
in squeeze if possible. It contains all of the relevant changes from
the current 23.2+1-2.1 NMU (already in squeeze), one minor build fix,
and a patch for the GNU/kFreeBSD startup hang (#559392, serious).

Here are the new changelog entries. These are the new changes:

  * Don't try to "mkdir $(infodir)" in doc/*/Makefile.in.

  * Fix startup hang on GNU/kFreeBSD (fix-kfreebsd-startup.diff).
Thanks to antoine beaupre for the report
and Petr Salinger for the patch.
(closes: #559392)

and these are the entries that were incorporated from the previous NMU:

  * Use -O1 rather than -O2 on ia64. Fixes a build failure (looks
like a broken byte compiler) with newer versions of gcc
(c.f. #207580). Thanks to Sven Joachim for the
report and thanks to Stéphane Glondu for the
23.2+1-2.1 NMU. (closes: 582439)

  * Remove deprecated Encoding field from emacsVER.desktop. Thanks to
Stéphane Glondu for the 23.2+1-2.1
NMU.

  * Use "set -e" rather than "/bin/sh -e" in emacsVER-common.postinst
and emacsVER-bin-common.postinst. Thanks to Stéphane Glondu
 for the 23.2+1-2.1 NMU.

  * Add a Homepage field to debian/control.in. Thanks to Stéphane
Glondu for the 23.2+1-2.1 NMU.

  * Remove redundant Section and Priority fields from binary packages
in debian/control.in. Thanks to Stéphane Glondu
 for the 23.2+1-2.1 NMU.

  * Change quilt Build-Depends from (>= 0.42-1) to (>= 0.42).  Thanks
to Stéphane Glondu for the 23.2+1-2.1 NMU.

  * Change debhelper Build-Depends from (>=4) to (>= 7.0.50~) to
support rules overrides. Thanks to Sven Joachim
, and thanks to Stéphane Glondu
 for the 23.2+1-2.1 NMU.

  * Add ${misc:Depends} to debian/control for debhelper. Thanks to
Stéphane Glondu for the 23.2+1-2.1 NMU.

This was such a minor update I considered not unblocking it, but have
done so.

I'm assuming the changelogs for both of the above were auto-generated
from git commit messages. The problem is that the final change reverted
the first - i.e. the "Removing debhelper auto install overrides" entry
is in fact incorrect as the overrides are still in the package.

Both unblocked for the bug fixes, but you might want to fix the
changelog next time an upload is required.

Were there any particular changes which make these upstream versions
more release-worthy than those already in testing? There are quick a
few changes in the upstream repository and the "changelog just says see
the hg repo" doesn't help identify whether any are particularly
important when one doesn't know the software.

Unblocked, given the size and nature of the new upstream.

I already unblocked this when I saw it earlier, whilst checking the
state of the icu transition as it popped up as a new block to finishing
the transition. :-/

As has been stated a number of times before, please do not upload
packages which are part of an ongoing transition without talking to us
first. This applies whether there is a freeze in operation or not.

This package - it's actually a set of five packages, one virtual
package that provides the daemon, with three variants, depending on
database type, and one for the web ui that can be used to configure it
- has not yet made it into NEW. Right now, I'm haggling with properly
installing and uninstalling the package, as the guy who produced the
package imho made some packaging errors, and this doesn't work
flawlessly right now, or at least not on Testing (I'm going to check
on a Sid VM RSN). I wanted to get this right before the first upload.
Unfortunately, the guy who did the original packaging, Nikolai Lusan,
is not quite responsive atm due to his share of problems in his RL.

But this _only_ affects the packaging itself.

I've since had discussions with upstream about what to actually put
into the package, and I'm quite confident that the packaging will be
the only issue with this package.

You mean, the diff between the old and the new package? As I agree with
the proponents of the new packaging format that the packages themselves
are much easier to manage.

As far as I can see, the package has never built on kfreebsd-* before,
so this wouldn't be a regression? If so then I'm afraid it probably
wouldn't qualify.

I see that this has since been uploaded. As it is a new upstream
version I'd prefer to let it age in unstable for a while longer first;

I have to admit that I'd have preferred that this not include a
packaging format change.

However, the changes are small and look sane; unblocked.

Again, the packaging format change here makes the diff quite a bit
harder to follow.

The changes generally look ok, but I'd prefer that this also got some
more time in unstable. Please ping us again in another week or so.

Please add a freeze exception for webgui

2010-08-14 Thread Ernesto Hernández-Novich
Hi.

Could you please add a freeze exception for the package webgui? Version
7.8.24 currently in Sid:

1. Fixes #585471 by removing a file that has a non-free license [1].
2. Includes an important performance bug for installations with a large
number of users and/or large number of concurrent sessions [2].
3. Includes an i18n fix for the spanish language [3].
4. It's probably the last of the 7.8 series, since 7.9 was declared
stable two days after the freeze :-(

Thanks!

Thanks. -6 is now in the archive and uploaded on most architectures
already.

I've unblocked it and aged it a little.

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner.  Overall, the diff looks fine;
thanks.

A couple of quick comments:

+ # Check if we need to migrate to the new style.
+   if previous_version_older 2.4.23-2 || [ -f "${SLAPD_CONF}" ]; then

Should the version in the above be -3?

+ # TODO: Now we are doing something that is not allowed by
policy but it
+ # has to be done.
+ sed -i -e "s|^SLAPD_CONF=.*|SLAPD_CONF=\"${SLAPD_CONF}\"|"
/etc/default/slapd

That comment immediately make me think "uh oh", although I don't
currently have a better alternative to suggest that wouldn't leave
people with a broken system after the upgrade.

Adam

Freeze exception request for jxplorer

Hi,
current version (3.2.1+dfsg-2), due to a missing directory
(/usr/share/jxplorer/plugins), doesn't create a default configuration
file which makes possible ldap connections with kerberos.
Both directory and file are creatable by hand after installation but it
would be better if we provided them.

Uploaded version -3 fixes that.

Hello there,

This is a late cleanup, actually planned to be done shortly before the

Sorry for the additional work.

Would you still accept this for Squeeze?

Maybe so, but a freeze is not the right time for these changes IMO.

First this is not ubuntu (we don't have a feature freeze). Second, this
was just something I noticed while reviewing the diff between the
packages. It's certainly not more of an issue with the new package than
with the old one, so not going to affect the decision on a freeze
exception.

Ok, should be fine then. I was thinking of a scenario where the
filename would be user-controllable, and contain shell metacharacters,
allowing some sort of code execution when passing that filename to the
shell through popen.

I finally did the upgrade of an existing system at July 24th. It all went well,
be biggest issues I probably catched through dependencies of third party
packages. So going through the detailed upgrade log is probably not worth (but
I can share a script log of the upgrade if anybody is interested in that). I
did a bugreport agains the 'release-notes' pseudopackage with all the details:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=592947

Here are some aspects which I think are worthwhile to be mentioned in the
release notes:

* sysv-rc: dependency based boot process

This is a major change and everybody is affected. I think it would be good to
tell the users in the realease notes about it and describe how the upgrade
process works.

* grub2: chainloading/update-from-grub-legacy

This is also a major change and everybody is affected. Worked for me although I
had a minor isseue: I could not remember if my system is booting by default
from /dev/sda or /dev/sdb and I selected the wrong one. So I had to do some
bios changes to get the system booted again. It would have helped me if the
release notes would have told how to find out which is the current device which
the system boots from.

* Udev 151-2 upgrade problem
  http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=571255

This one almost broke my system. Although I followed #15 in the bugreport, the
upgrade of the kernel upgrade and udev upgrade did not work, only udev was
upgraded (not sure why). The real bad thing was, that I did not notice that
something went wrong. I was lucky that I decided not to reboot right away, but
to continue the upgrade and found later the the linux-image did not upgrade.
Here a test if the upgrade worked would have been extremely helpful.

Thanks,
Rainer

[squeeze] permission to upload evolution 2.30.3

2010-08-14 Thread Yves-Alexis Perez
Hey,

evolution (and gtkhtml3.13/evolution-data-server) 2.30.3 was recently
released. It's a bugfix release, though the diffs might be a bit large,
so I'd like to ask permission to upload to unstable and then a freeze
exception so it ends up in Squeeze.

I've not yet identified all the (Debian) bugs fixed by this release but
there's at least #589340. Looking at upstream changelog, it's mostly
translations, fixes for crashes and improvements for IMAP+ backend.
Evolution diff is *huge* because of translations updates.

I think the new packaging is much better than the classic one, the
debian/rules file is less cluttered, consisting more or less only of the
exceptions from a standard build, and the changes and additions against
the original source (usually only the debian/ directory) in a tarball,
allowing also to set permissions, include empty files, ...

This problem existed already from foomatic-filters 4.0.0 on, so it is
not newly introduced with 4.0.5, so it should not be the reason to
reject a Feature-Freeze exception.

Lars, can you look into changing the code not to use statically-sized
buffers or at least make it easier to change the size of the buffers?

> Things like pdf_count_pages make me think shell code injection, but I

It is usually running as the user "lp". The input file is not directly
executed by Ghostscript as a PostScript program, but read in as a PDF
file for the PDF interpreter. So inserting a malicious PostScript
program as input file here should not work.

If foomatic-rip does not run as the calling user, it is run by CUPS as
the user "lp". Then CUPS supplies the file name (usually of a temporary
file which CUPS has put into /tmp. If foomatic-rip is called by CUPS
with data streaming from stdin, foomatic-rip creates a temporary file by
itself and generates the name for it. Then the function is called with
this temporary file.

Dear Release Team,
I uploaded openturns 0.13.2-6 which has been built on all plateforms [1]
(including armel which was failing with -5)
and more importantly I fixed #586351 [2] and #588861 [3]. I think that you
should unblock it once openturns 0.13.2-6 survived
the 10 days limit. The version in testing fails with python 2.6.

 1. https://buildd.debian.org/pkg.cgi?pkg=openturns
 2. http://bugs.debian.org/586351
 3. http://bugs.debian.org/588861

Best regards
C.

Bug#592944: future unblock: libhtml-template-perl/2.9-2

2010-08-14 Thread Florian Ernst
Package: release.debian.org
Severity: normal
User: release.debian@packages.debian.org
Usertags: freeze-exception

Hello there,

I'm planning to upload libhtml-template-perl/2.9-2 with the attached
changes. There are no upstream code changes involved.

This is a late cleanup, actually planned to be done shortly before the
freeze, but it seems I had false assumptions and was thus now surprised.
Sorry for the additional work.

Would you still accept this for Squeeze?

Packaging mlt git snapshot and kdenlive trunk for squeeze

2010-08-14 Thread Patrick Matthäi

Hello,

I were a bit overrunned by the freeze.

Currently there is in squeeze:

mlt: 0.5.6-1
kdenlive: 0.7.7.1+svn4571-1

I wanted to have mlt 0.5.7 and kdenlive 0.7.8 in squeeze, because both
of them (kdenlive is based on mlt) are fixing a lot of errors.

e.g.:

mlt:
- Fix image cache hit updating position state (kdenlive-1714).
  http://www.kdenlive.org/mantis/view.php?id=1714
- Fix scaling method on B frames of some transitions.
- Fix tractor to set conversion functions on frames it generates.
- Initialize processed var and skip if NULL.
- Cleanup & fix memleak
- Fix memory corruption on any frei0r plugin with color param.
- Fix infinite loop on some audio decode errors (kdenlive-1690).
  http://www.kdenlive.org/mantis/view.php?id=1690
- Fix crash when repeating frames after failure to decode video.

kdenlive:
Tons of errors, most new features are already included in the current
svn version in squeeze:
http://www.kdenlive.org/mantis/view_all_bug_page.php?filter=20296

Could I go ahead with both?

No it doesn't, it is a change specific to slapd (the OpenLDAP server) and
this has nothing to do with the library shipped with openldap.

1.0.8-6 is currently in NEW, as it reintroduces the libghc6-magic-prof
package, which was dropped in -5; was that (either the dropping or the
reintroduction) intentional?

Presumably this means we have the advantage of knowing the problems
involved and being able to avoid them or at least reduce their impact?

Does the move to using slapd.d imply changes to other packages, or is
this a transition in the "move from state A to state B" sense rather
than the Debian "lots of packages changing at the same time and making
the release team cry" sense?

Please go ahead, and let us know once the package has been accepted.

Oops. *looks for a brown paper bag for not spotting that originally*

Please go ahead.

Unblock brltty?

2010-08-14 Thread Adam D. Barratt
Hi,

The icu transition is ready to go, but currently stalled by brllty which
is blocked because of its udeb.

As I understand it, the udeb does not use icu so should be safe to
unblock in that regard; could we do so please?

Regards,

Adam

Great, thanks. I'll upload 1.1.19 tomorrow.

At my work place we are using 1.1.19 as we really needed some bugfixes
which were not in 1.1.15 nor 1.1.17. It works stable and we did not have
any issues up to now.

So personally I would go for 1.1.19, so unless there are objections
please do upload that one.

Cheers

udev-acl is meant for ConsoleKit integration and doesn't do anything for
you if you don't use ConsoleKit. Yes, the name stinks.

The problem we have with MFPs is that both CUPS (lp group) and SANE
(scanner group) need read/write access to the USB device.

As it isn't possible with standard UNIX permissions, the only way to fix
this is to switch to using ACLs instead.

Due to a recent change in the udev rules, the MFPs now end up root:lp
instead of root:scanner so users can't scan anymore. And before that
some fiddling was needed to make printing work.

So it's a problem that's always been there but there wasn't an
acceptable fix before now, as requiring ACL support on the /dev
filesystem was not acceptable until now.

Today, udev is pretty much mandatory, it uses tmpfs for /dev, the Debian
kernels have ACL support for the tmpfs filesystem and ConsoleKit
requires ACL support. So it isn't a requirement anymore, it's just a
fact that ACL support on /dev HAS to be there. Let's use it.

JB.

Seeking for advice regarding keepalived

2010-08-14 Thread Alexander Wirt
Hi folks,

some time ago I uploaded keepalived 1.2.0 to debian because it was the first
(development) version with ipv6 support for ipvs. I thought/hoped development
would be faster so that we have a working/stable version with ipv6 for
squeeze. Unfortunatly that wasn't the case. I don't think 1.2.0 should be
released with squeeze, but I also don't want to release without keepalived
since several people rely on it.

So I see two options here:

- Upload 1:1.1.17 to unstable/testing (that was the latest version in squeeze
  before 1.2.0)

- Upload 1:1.1.19 to unstable/testing (that is a bugfix release which
  contains some wanted bugfixes.)

The second option would be my preferred one.

What do you think?

Alex
