Done, I went ahead and fixed the indentation throughout the entire

I will work on this to make it clearer in squeeze +1.

I will also be adding a debconf template stating that the webserver
is not configured for ampache and that it needs to be done manually,
and exit gracefully if the answer to the debconf
ampache/webserver_restart question is "no", for squeeze +1.

Attached is a debdiff of the changes.

Please unblock package zoneminder

the -6 version fixes two RC bugs, and the -7 version fixes a regression
introduced when fixing those bugs.

zoneminder (1.24.2-7) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Do not set ownership of /var/cache/zoneminder when upgrading, which fixes a
regression causing upgrades to take inordinately long with large
installations (closes: #597040).

zoneminder (1.24.2-6) unstable; urgency=low

  * Only remove database on purge. This requires only creating the database if
it doesn't already exist, and upgrading the database only if the database
is an older version (closes: #497107).

  * Do not prompt the user on database upgrades by using the --nointeractive
flag when calling zmupdate.pl from postinst (closes: #595902).

Package: release.debian.org

Please unblock package boinc

I am sponsoring this upload for Daniel who has fixed two frequently reported
bugs

  * debian/boinc-client.init: wait until BOINC has ended for "stop"
action. This fixes the post-removal script to be run too early,
when the system user might be still logged in and cannot be
deleted (LP: #583434). It also fixes the "restart" action.
  * debian/boinc-client.init: schedule: do not fail if chrt fails
(LP: #629649).

I have looked over it, tried it and am excited. It works very nicely. The
package
is co-maintained between Debian and Ubuntu. Those two bugs affect Debian alike,
albeit reported on launchpad. Please allow this update in.

Many thanks

Steffen, also in the name of Rene and Daniel

Bug#597472: firegpg 0.8-1 for squeeze?

2010-09-19 Thread Daniel Kahn Gillmor
Package: release.debian.org

hi debian release team--

FireGPG is unfortunately in an unmaintained state by upstream, and 0.8
appears to be a terminal release.

  http://blog.getfiregpg.org/2010/06/07/firegpg-discontinued/

version 0.7.10 (in testing right now) appears to have had a transient
FTBFS due (i think) to some fluctuations in the xulrunner-dev packages.
(#595833)

the only change (aside from localization updates) which upstream made
for version 0.8 was to disable the (broken) GMail support, as the web
service changed too frequently to keep up.

As such, i've packaged 0.8, which i'm willing to maintain for the life
of squeeze in the hopes that someone new will pick up upstream development.

However, i'm not prepared to deal with bugs in the gmail support
features, since they are a known problem and a sisyphean task.

So i ask that you either update firegpg in squeeze from 0.7.10 to 0.8-1,
or pull firegpg from squeeze entirely.

There are no reverse dependencies, so i don't believe that an update to
0.8 would be harmful, but i trust you all to make the right decision for
squeeze.

Thanks for all your work.

--dkg

firegpg (0.8-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * New Upstream Release
   - disables gmail support (Closes: #567735)
  * enable the use of C++ extensions to match how libxul is being built
(according to #warnings in
/usr/include/xulrunner-1.9.1/unstable/nscore.h:406)
  * bumped standards-version to 3.9.1 (no changes needed)

Re: Udev 151-2 upgrade problem on debian-testing-'squeeze' i386 cd binary1 20090302-04-:09

2010-09-19 Thread Steve Langasek
Ciao Marco,

I've been working on wrapping my head fully around the various issues with
the udev and kernel upgrade, to ensure we have it documented properly in the
release notes. It's clear to me that we will need to include documentation
of this issue in the release notes no matter what changes are made to the
packages, because users will need to know that the new udev won't work
correctly with the Debian 2.6.26 kernels. At the same time, I think
something needs to change in the packages to improve the 'dist-upgrade'
experience, because we both know many users won't read the release notes.

First, what happened to the idea of using 'Breaks'? This was proposed
months ago, but it hasn't been implemented yet in the package. Should I
provide a patch that implements this?

Second, I've done some research and testing regarding the nature of the
incompatibility with CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED. From what I see, the primary
impact of dropping the compat code from udev is that udev rules will no
longer be applied to certain devices, such as block devices and network
devices. This will break /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules, and
break any permission-setting on disks (e.g., the 'disk' and 'floppy' groups)
and certain alias symlinks for CD drives, but those are the only problems
I've been able to identify on a standard as a result of running udev 160
with CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED; and of these, only 70-persistent-net.rules is
potentially a boot-breaker, and would still permit booting the system far
enough to rescue by hand at console (i.e., the same process one would use if
a newer kernel was installed but not configured to boot by default, which is
one of the scenarios that currently permits bypassing this preinst error).

So do you know of any other things that will break, or can you provide
pointers to other areas I should look at? You mention in the bug that some
rules "will not work in ways beyond most people's ability to understand",
but I don't even see any documentation here for those of us who *do* have
the ability to understand and want to try to explain it to the others. :-)
If there aren't any other issues, then IMHO the case is clear for
downgrading the CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED handling from a preinst abort to a
preinst debconf note (i.e.: interrupt the upgrade before udev unpack, to
make sure the admin gets the message before we proceed). Right now, the
cure (aborting the install of a core package during a dist-upgrade, leaving
apt in a difficult-to-fix state) is definitely much worse than the disease
(some devices not fully configured after reboot if the kernel isn't
upgraded, requiring the user to grab a console shell to install a proper
kernel).

Third, you write that the old udev *also* won't work with the new kernel.
Can you be more specific? In my testing, this also works fine; I wasn't
able to identify anything out of place when rebooting to a 2.6.32 Debian
kernel with a lenny udev.

Finally, you comment in
 that "the new
kernel (indirectly) depends on a newer udev." In my testing, I'm able to
install a 2.6.32-5 kernel package from squeeze directly onto lenny without
upgrading udev in the process. When you say it "indirectly depends", do you
mean that there is a *logical* dependency that isn't reflected in the
package dependencies, or are you referring to some earlier situation whereby
upgrading the kernel package did pull in a udev upgrade at the same time?

To summarize, with the information I have available, I believe there are two
changes that should be made to the udev package:

 - add the Breaks: linux-image-2.6-$flavor
   (<< $SYSFS_DEPRECATED_fixed_version) to udev, as discussed
 - change the preinst CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED abort to a debconf error note
   warning users about the network, permissions problems if they don't
   install a new kernel

But I know that I may have overlooked some details. If you see any problems
with my suggestion, please let me know what they are so that I can look for
better solutions.

And if there aren't problems with this proposal, I'm happy to prepare a
patch to the package for this if that would be helpful to you.

Thanks,

That is correct. However, that worst case -- however unlikely -- might
be severe enough to warrant the Breaks:. I'm therefore tending towards
the latter, but will leave the final call up to you.

right now I'm uploading this to sid:

 debian-edu-artwork (0.0.32-1) unstable; urgency=low

   * Drop debian-edu-artwork-usplash. (Closes: #593707)

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner.

Looking at the code, only the changes in the third hunk (around line
583) actually appear to make any practical difference; the others
shouldn't hurt though, for a "belt and braces" approach.

In terms of a stable update, we prefer not to change or introduce patch
systems so the changes should be applied directly via the .diff.gz. One
also assumes that the copy of config.log from an aborted run was not
intended to be included. :-)

Adam

I only now noticed that this version of shadow entered testing.

Assuming that #596283 will be fixed by a -2 release of shadow, I was
wondering whether the Release Team would like a cron -115 as well, with
this feature removed from /etc/cron.daily/standard.

First, let me point out that keeping both around has zero negative
effects in practice, as both scripts will attempt to backup /etc/passwd
et al only if the backup copy differs from the original -- ie, nothing
is overwritten, as script #2 attempting to perform the backup will just
skip the files already backed up by script #1.

Nevertheless, this redundancy is questionable at best. Should the RT
therefore wish a cron-115, I'd prepare one with a solution analogous to
#541412, where backup of dpkg files was handed over to dpkg.

The postrm fix appears to be missing the final "fi"; the indentation's
now also confusing, but that's possibly my fault for providing a diff

dash situation

2010-09-19 Thread Helmut Grohne
Dear release team,

[Please CC me in replies, cause I am on neither list.]

I'd like to ping you about the dash situation, because it looks to me
that it can delay the release.

Current status
~~
dash is /bin/sh by default. It currently has three rc bugs.
 * #546528: dash's preinst shouldn't rely on /bin/sh
   This bug has a patch which is almost one year old. I pinged Gerrtit
   about half a year ago without any response. When Marek Kubica tried
   to NMU this patch further problems turned out. Raphael Geissert has
   worked on these problems, but no final solution is in place yet.

 * #538822: dash: fails to install overwriting files from bash
   This bug is also more than one year old. The bug was reproduced on a
   number of different systems. Thorsten Glaser pointed out that this is
   a more general issue preventing other shells from being /bin/sh.
   There have been numerous ideas without deep thought or testing. It
   affects users upgrading from Lenny if they followed README.Debian, so
   it needs to be addressed.

 * #582952: dash / LINENO-support lets many package FTBFS
   autoconf/configure seems to detect a working POSIX shell using
   presence of LINENO, so with this change it started using dash instead
   of bash being bitten by numerous bashisms. The actual bug is not in
   dash, but in far too many packages to fix.

Options
~~~
 * #546528: This seems to be "only" a policy violation and I have not
   found any reports about practical problems. If this is not to be
   fixed, it would be an option to tag this squeeze-ignore.
 * #538822: Must be addressed in some way. Since it only hits upgrading
   users that followed README.Debian, those users could be told to
   revert that change via release-notes.
 * #582952: This one involves either fixing a lot of packages or
   shipping a non-POSIX shell by default. Both of which are bad and
   probably breaking a lot of unrelated stuff. Shipping a non-POSIX dash
   seems to be slightly better to me as this hasn't bothered us so
   far[1].
Another option
~~
Due to the currently bad state of dash it is questionable whether Debian
can release with this shell as /bin/sh. So another option is to ship
bash as /bin/sh again. Not supporting dash as /bin/sh would make the
bugs mentioned above vanish. Beware that newer packages may contain
"dashisms" and thus introduce new problems when switching back to bash.
Question to release team
Since any of these options involves quite fundamental changes to our
distribution they should happen very soon unless we wish to delay the
release. I hereby ask the release team to decide about the provider for
/bin/sh. Any changes either to the /bin/sh symlink or the dash package
should happen very soon. Having a clear message about what these changes
are to be is necessary to make them happen.
Next steps
~~
If anyone is going to work on the mentioned bug reports, please state
that in the bug report. Also note that the dash maintainer has requested
help with the package[2]. Also Raphael Geissert seems to have some plans
about the dash situation[3]. It would be nice if you (Raphael) could
give a status report.
I hope that we can get this set of issues fixed in one way or another.
Helmut
[1] Note that neither dash nor bash do conform to POSIX anyway. For
instance "sh -c 'echo 0:$0 1:$1' - command_name command_option" is
to print "0:command_name 1:command_option" whereas both dash and
bash print "0:- 1:command_option". Some BSDs seem to get this right.
See http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/009695399/utilities/sh.html
for details.
Ok, as discussed on IRC, I've actually just put it back into .diff.gz to
make the diff simpler. The changelog is now
vite (1.1-4) unstable; urgency=low
  * Restore changes against upstream which were lost during 1.1-2 upload (and
re-work my workflow to avoid letting this happen).
  * debian/rules: Run ./configure through sh again.
 -- Samuel Thibault   Sun, 19 Sep 2010 14:44:30 +0200
vite (1.1-3) unstable; urgency=low
  * debian/rules: Run ./configure through bash instead of sh.
 -- Samuel Thibault   Wed, 25 Aug 2010 00:56:44 +0200
vite (1.1-2) unstable; urgency=low
  * debian/control:
- Bump libqt4-dev build-dep version to >= 4:4.6, as previous versions get
random crashes with newer X servers.
- Bump Standards-Version to 3.9.1 (no change needed).
 -- Samuel Thibault   Tue, 24 Aug 2010 21:39:11 +0200
but it actually boils down to just what is announced in the 1.1-2: just
Build-Depends and Standards-Version change in debian/control. I have
also added information about the aforementioned changes against upstream
in the 1.1-1 changelog entry where it should have been:
  * configure: Cherry-pick upstream fixes to fix bashisms.
  * src/core/Core.cpp, src/parser/Line.cpp: Cherry-pick upstream fixes to fix
build.
Fair enough. I CC'ed fglrx maintainers so that they are aware of this
change and can document it somehow. It think it's worth mentioning in
the Release Notes, no?
Only speech-dispatcher uses mbrola ATM, and without this fix it doesn't
work.
In my memory (that was changed months ago) it was just a routine update.
Well, the problem is that upstream has several websites. The stable
website seems to be google, but newer updates appear on abilitiessoft
first (and then they might remember to update google after that).
abilitiessoft used to be jbb-software before, that's why I consider the
google website more stable for upstream location.
It is actually not enabled, precisely because we're frozen (it was added
just before the freeze), see the speakup binary package being commented
in debian/control.
> debian/speakup.{prerm,postinst} have the #DEBHELPER# token twice.
These aren't actually used atm because the speakup binary package is not
built.  But yes, now dropped in our git repo.
Mmm, actually it's the converse. Due to the integration of the Debian
packaging to upstream, -2 apparently dropped the needed changes against
upstream (which were folded directly into .diff.gz), thus the -3 upload
to fix the configure call.
I'll upload a -4 that folds the -1 changes against upstream into a
separate patch.
I think it should be documented in fglrx instead. The behavior of
1.8.10-5 is buggy anyway, so we just came back and gave fglrx users an
opportunity to have a working gecko/webkit.
However nobody is going to look for the solution in the cairo
documentation. Ideally, I’d even say this variable should be set by
fglrx in a Xsession startup script if the driver is being used, instead
of being documented (remember, no one reads documentation).
Cheers,
One thing that's worth mentioning is that the output is slightly
different from the existing out-of-date checks for unstable:
- the excuse says "not yet built on $arch"
- the check purely says "has the tpu package produced any binaries on
$arch" rather than "has the tpu package produced all the binaries on
$arch which the testing package produced"
If people would particularly like it changed so that each of the missing
binaries relative to the testing package are listed then I'll look at
adding that.
Cheers,
Adam
Don't you need some Conflicts/Replaces to ensure smooth upgrades? (you
moved files from the main binary package to another binary package).
Admittedly live-manual is not present in lenny but Squeeze users will
encounter the upgrade problem.
Hello,
I would like to hear your opinion before uploading. KDE has recently released a
new patch release (4.4.6) for its kdepim suite 4.4.x series (kdepim-runtime and
kdepim source packages in Debian). KDE has a rather strict policy what goes
into its patch releases (no new features, only bug fixes). So I think it makes
much sense to release Squeeze with the latest bugfix version from upstream
because a few months of bug fixing went into kdepim* 4.4.6. Also please note
that 4.4.6 is probably the last release of the old kdepim* codebase while
upstream is actively working on the kdepim* 4.5 which is >70% rewrite so to
speak. In my opinion, this makes the update even more important given the
length of the Debian stable lifecycle.
Speaking strictly about kdepim-runtime source package, the upstream diff is
really small (see below). So would you grant a freeze exception for this
package after it spends some time in unstable? Thank you for considering.
Please unblock python-django 1.2.3-1
This is a new upstream micro-release, it contains a security fix for
#596205 and many small bugfixes. The debdiff is rather large but
upstream is very sane when it comes with release management
and there are no new features, only bugfixes and
documentation/translation updates.
Upstream release policy if you want to learn more:
http://docs.djangoproject.com/en/1.2/internals/release-process/
The debdiff on the binary package shows removed files and also changed
dependencies, this is because the previous version was built with multiple
python installed and some files ended up on version-specific path when
there was no good reason for this (I'll file a bug on debhelper for this).
Feel free to let it age the normal 10 days period before the migration to
ensure it contains no regression.
Please unblock package mtkbabel.
It contains two fixes which work around bugs with two different GPS
devices (the rest of the changelog is mostly cosmetic stuff).
The changelog is:
  * New upstream release.
+ Fixes "Doesn't work with Holux M-241 firmware 1.13" (Closes: #572942).
+ Fixes Transystem GPS Trip Recorder 747A+ memory issue (Closes: #526809).
  * Standards-Version: 3.9.1 (no changes required).
  * debian/patches/10_manpage_hyphen_fix.patch: Drop, merged upstream.
  * debian/patches/20_help_fix.patch: Drop, merged upstream.
  * debian/mtkbabel.lintian-overrides: Drop, no longer needed.
  * Small updates in the package description and copyright file.
unblock mtkbabel/0.8.2-1
Thanks for considering, Uwe.
Isn't it worth mentioning such a change in debian/NEWS? So that users are
actually aware of the behaviour change.
It should work anywhere that just approving would work now; the approve
checks would set updatecand to 0 and force would just set it back to 1
again.
Isn't it a bit late for such a big change? (and it doesn't fix any RC or
Right, though that bug does not block the migration, so can be resolved
(re-narrowing to -release)
Well, Adam said "upload and ping us in a couple of weeks time". That
was on Sun 5th. So, technically speaking, we're in a couple of weeks
timebut one might prefer the packages to receive some more
testing.
And, anyway, we have #593823 which needs to be addressed whatever
version we use for squeeze, so 3.5.5 will not enter testing even if
you unblock it (for that one, I need Steve to talk with upstream as I
feel unsafe talking abou tsymbols in libraries).
I know you're attending the ftpmaster meeting right now, if I properly
read Ganneff's annoucements. Is there a chance that this bug is fixed
so that we can reupload samba? Or should we go another way, which seems
to be enforcing samba 3.5.5 in squeeze?
I'm worried about samba still being vulnerable in squeeze.
