We would like to carry out a GNUstep transition
(libgnustep-base1.20-1.22; libgnustep-gui0.18-0.20) *and*
libobjc2-3, ideally coinciding with the migration of gcc-defaults to
testing (or even better, before that).

All new versions of the core GNUstep packages are already in
experimental. A routine rebuild revealed only 6 bugs, all of them
having a fix available now:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?which=tagusers=pkg-gnustep-maintain...@lists.alioth.debian.orgdata=gnustep-base1.22-transition

The latest stable upstream release of gnustep-base (1.22.0) includes
support for the new (modernized) Objective-C runtime in GCC 4.6
(libobjc3). About 3 months ago, the GCC maintainers asked us to
postpone any GNUstep transitions until libobjc3 is available in
unstable [*]; now the transition is inevitable because gcc-4.6 is the
default compiler on most archs.

[*] http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.linux.debian.devel.gcc/37170

Expected problems:

* gnustep-base now depends on ICU and is thus tied to future ICU
  transitions.

* gcc-4.5 is still the default compiler on ia64 and sparc. As
immediate solution, I intend to add (temporarily) gobjc-4.6 to
gnustep-base' Build-Depends; that way the packages will still be
built with the default compiler (4.5), but the new ObjC runtime will
  be used.

* A few runtime bugs may pop-up as usual, and as per Murphy's Law will
be discovered post-factum. I hope we can deal with them in due
time, unless there is a scary arch-specific issue like the hppa
excitement during the last transition. TBH, I am quite surprised by
the low number of bugs so far as they hardly correspond to the
drastic changes in -base. It makes me feel somewhat uneasy; we're
used to battle with a lot more problems.

Hello,

Could you remove clang from testing ?
It migrated to testing but the version of gcc currently available in testing
is too old and provides old paths for the multiarch aspects.
Version 4.6.1-8 of gcc should be available to allow a correct transition.
I will upload a version -11 of clang with an explicit dependency against gcc.
Bug #642278 shows the kind of issue testing users will have.

Thanks,

There's packages build-depending on clang in testing already, so this is
kind of ugly. However if clang uses the wrong paths then I guess
they're already unbuildable. So removal hint added, but it'd be nice to
have the new version migrate asap...

Upcoming perl 5.14 transition

2011-11-13 Thread Dominic Hargreaves
As per #637809, I plan to upload perl 5.14 to unstable soon (maybe today,
depending on how some last bits of testing go). Like last time, this
will mean that a large number (~ 470) of packages will need to be binNMUed

packages being avoided once the rebuilds start, so that the transition
isn't interrupted, so I hope that this heads-up is useful. If this is
likely to cause any serious problems for anyone, let me know ASAP.

Bug#648628: transition: gpsd

2011-11-13 Thread Bernd Zeimetz
Package: release.debian.org
Severity: normal
User: release.debian@packages.debian.org
Usertags: transition

Hi Release Team,

gpsd's service library libgps got a bunch of API and ABI changes, so it
needs a transition from libgps19 to libgps20.

Currently there are only 4 packages left in unstable which do not build
against the new API:

geoclue #648496
obdgpslogger #648495
kdeedu #648502
kdebase-workspace #648504

I'm able to patch geoclue and obdgpslogger quickly if necessary.
For kde* the qt/kde people and I agreed that they will - depending on
the time of the gpsd transition - either upload fixed packages to
unstable after the new gpsd version is available (so we don't need to
binNMU them again) or if they are ready to upload kde 4.7/kdeedu 4.7 at
the time the gpsd transition happens, both transitions could run in
parallel.

So please let me know when you'd like me to upload gpsd to unstable.

Thanks and cheers,

Bernd

it's been weeks already, can you please tell us what we can expect on

Bug#644042: pu: package partman-target/72

tag 644042 + squeeze confirmed

subsquently plugged USB hard disks to work properly in GNOME or KDE.

Attached is the proposed update to partman-target that fix this issue.

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you; please go ahead.

Re: stable-proposed-updates: considering cpufrequtils

I'm wondering if it's worth updating cpufrequtils in Squeeze to the
 current version in testing/unstable.
There are a couple of fixes that are worth considering in there and
namely: fixing support for linux 3.0 (some modules have been moved
and broke assumptions in cpufrequtils init scripts) and support for AMD
 family 20 CPUs.

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you about this.

[...]
+ * Bulk load only helper modules. Linux 3.0 shuffled cpufreq modules
+locations a bit and now cpu drivers and helpers are in the same directory
 +(closes: #636141).
+ * Use modprobe -b in loadcpufreq to honour blacklisted modules
 +(closes: #592488).
 + * Load powernow-k8 for AMD family 20 (i.e. AMD E-350 cpus)
 +(closes: #627811).
+ * Stop changing printk levels when loading cpufreq modules (closes: #624575
 +and closes: #596235).

I've been debating whether to accept all of the changes, and changed my
mind a few times while arguing with myself. :-) Have the changes been
tested on a stable system?

Regards,

Adam

Don't worry, I woke up right after the last point release, so there was
no rush, indeed. :)

The updated package has just been uploaded to franck.d.o.

Re: Description-less packages file

I just merged a patch from Ansgar to generate the Packages files without
the English description embedded inside them. Instead they are now
written into a new file, the English Translation file in
main/i18n/Translation-en.bz2. They thus appear alongside all other
translated descriptions as just another language. apt co will (or
should) just download those Translation files to show the description,
as they do already for all other languages.
This lets us save quite a bit of space on our mirrors by not repeating
them as many times as we have architectures - and also enables
non-English-speaking users (and eventually multi-arch enabled APT) to
save on download size, as they no longer need to download a language
that is of no use to them or is already there.

As this is is a larger changeset we did not switch the official dists/
tree directly. Instead we are providing files generated in this way over
at [1] for you to test with and report bugs you find in this
implementation or in the handling of it in whatever tool breaks
down. That location is updated right during dinstall so should always
contain current information.

As far as I can tell, debian-cd should now cope with the change just
fine. Starting with tomorrow's builds, CDs should pick up the existing
translations by default and should then also use Translation-en.bz2
when it appears.

What happens to people using Acquire::Languages {none; } ; to avoid
to download any other languages than the default one that was included
in the main Package file? [1]

Should they switch to Acquire::Languages {en; } ; (or any other
language)?
What will happen if they do nothing? (ie how 3rd-party tools will react
if no description is available)?

  Regards,
Vincent

[1] side note: it took me a long time to figure that, in order to not
download any translation files, I need the apt setup
(Acquire::Languages {none; }) but I *also* need to manually remove any
*Translation* files in /var/lib/apt/lists/
