Re: Roll call for porters of architectures in sid and testing (Status update)

2013-09-30 Thread Steven Chamberlain
Hi,

Nothing motivates like a deadline...

I am an active porter for the following architectures and I intend
to continue this for the lifetime of the jessie release:

For kfreebsd-amd64 and kfreebsd-i386, I
  - test many packages on this architecture
  - triage arch-specific bugs
  - fix arch-related bugs
  - keep an eye on buildds
  - stay current with debian-bsd@lists.d.o
  - help with wheezy security support for arch-specific packages

Furthermore I run kfreebsd-amd64 on a development machine, and on a
number of production servers. I use kfreebsd-i386 on some embedded
systems in a production environment.

I am not a DD/DM, but maybe someday...

Thanks!
Regards,

2013-09-27 Thread Graham Whaley
Hi all.
The 1st October is rapidly approaching, so I thought I'd better put a more
formal place marker down for IMGs support of Debian MIPS. A couple of my
guys have asked for some information on what will be involved, but have no
reply yet. Whist we sort out the new hires and get my present team onto
this, I'll fill out Niels' template to give you a placeholder for the MIPS
arches at least:

"""
  Hi,

I am an (the manager/group leader of) active porter(s) for the
following architectures and I intend to continue this for the lifetime
of the jessie release:

For mips and mipsel we will, at minimum,
  - test all packages on this architecture (working on this...)
  - fix toolchain issues (I have direct access to the IMG/MIPS gcc
compiler team)
  - triage arch-specific bugs
  - fix arch-related bugs

I am not a DD/DM, but we intend to have DD/DM's working for us rsn

  Graham Whaley
"""

If there are still some requirements you believe we will be missing
(such as running buildd's etc.) then let me know, as I will do
everything in my power to solve any issues.

I am about to email the DSA team to discuss the present mips/mipsel
hardware situation so we can fix that as well.

The debian system administration team (d...@debian.org) handles
our hardware resources. They'll probably be able to help you on that

2013-09-24 Thread Graham Whaley
Hi David.
Good timing. I needed to update everybody on the status.
I now have allocation for two full time permanent hires for Debian MIPS
work in my group, and will be placing those job adverts on the imgtec web
site as soon as I can (in the next few days), and posting those links to
the debian-jobs mailing list.
I also have allocation for MIPS native build hardware. I need to discuss
the present situation of the MIPS hardware within Debian, and how we can
proceed to improve that situation. I've not identified who within Debian I
need to discuss this with - if anybody could point me in the right
direction or contact me directly then that would be very appreciated.
In the interim a couple of my team should be contacting the Debian Release
Team so we can resource MIPS for jessie whilst we get the new team formed
and up to speed.

Hi Graham,

nice to hear that there is somebody still interested in Debian-mips.
Already started thinking I'd end up with a non-supported software for my
MIPS hardware in the long-run.

[..]

> For those of you who wish to do some mips/mipsel work or testing

Given the seemingly dormant interest in Debian MIPS I'll see whether I
can allocate more time myself to help with porting and fixing. I'm
already eying Loongson-3A based hardware (heard that Lemote has Mini-ITX
boards available) to replace/augment my Fuloong 6004 system.

For MIPS-enthusiasts: tekmote is currently selling quadcore MIPS64
notebooks for <600 EUR:

http://www.tekmote.nl/epages/61504599.sf/nl_NL/?ObjectPath=/Shops/61504599/Products/CFL-008

IMO without a Debian MIPS64 port, Debian won't be viable for high end
MIPS equipment before soon, and is going to loose a lot of interested
developers.

David

I'm the most recent person to report that bug. Unfortunately I run a sole
ia64 box in a production setting and I only have physical access to it
during business hours (and no management card) which makes experimenting
with kernels difficult.

I would be more than happy to sign up as a porter for ia64 however I would
need to obtain more hardware. HP rx1620s can be had on eBay for $100 but
they are located in California and shipping + customs to Slovakia is not
worth it :-/

If someone is willing to donate hardware, or knows of a cheap source of
ia64 hardware in Europe I'm more than happy to host it here, maintain it,
provide access to developers, and time permitting test and and help
diagnose ia64-specific problems with the base system for the lifetime of
the jessie release.

I am also a long-time Debian user (>10 years, mostly x86/amd64, alpha in
the past, some arm work and ia64 from the time I've had this hardware). I
am not a DD/DM but have experience as a package maintainer via sponsorship
in the past.

desktop aspects (GNOME, Iceweasel, LibreOffice, Qt Creator, C++ 3D

inclined on server use.

I'm not a DD/DM, but daily update my ia64 workstation, report bugs and

Hi Niels, all.

First, I should introduce myself. I run Imagination/MIPS internal Linux
kernel and distribution groups.

I need to update you on the state of Debian support commitment within
Imagination, particularly in light of the plight of MIPS support for jessie.

Having become aware of this situation, I am working internally to
accelerate Imaginations existing Debian support group plans. This will
cover both engineering resource and hardware availability. It will take a
few days for us to work this through, and as soon as I have some news I
will post to this list.

Obviously it will take some time to make new hires, and in the interim I
will allocate some resource from my existing group to cover the gaps. These
are experienced kernel and distro guys. Once I've got more info then we'll
do some introductions and get some hardware rolling.

I'd also like to discuss how we sort out the server hardware requirements
once I've done a bit more research (trying to find the best platform for
the task). Niels, is there a specific person or group I can discuss this
with?

For those of you who wish to do some mips/mipsel work or testing (thanks
:-), but are short of hardware, I'll see what I can do there as well. Let
me know if you are interested

Any questions then fire away. Let's get this sorted out for the long term.

Hi,

I am an active tester (not always porter) for the following architectures and I
intend
to continue this for the lifetime of the jessie release:

i386, amd64, armel

- test most base packages on this architecture (every day tasks)
- test arch-related things
- test lots of ipv6 related issues

sparc, powerpc
- test base packages on this architecture (not every day)

I also own SGI Indy (mips*), HP (hppa) and have access to HP Itanium (ia64).
I have plans to do some debian on them, in my limited free time.

I am not a DD/DM

Re: Roll call for porters of architectures in sid and testing (Status update)

2013-09-20 Thread Michael Cree
FWIW, I am a porter of the Alpha architecture in the following ways:

 - run a buildd
 - kernel support
 - work with upstreams for toolchain support
 - general porting work including filing bugs and patches

I doubt if I will continue that for the life cycle of Jessie given that
many of the former faithful seem to be deserting alpha and I don't fancy
being the last one left to turn off the lights.

But possibly of interest is that I seem to be finding myself using arm
based hardware more and more and I anticipate that I might soon be doing
arm porting work. Whether that is for all or just a subset of arm ports
is yet to be seen.

I am subscribed to the debian-alpha and debian-arm mail lists.

I am not a DD.

Cheers
Michael.

Re: Roll call for porters of architectures in sid and testing (Status update)

2013-09-20 Thread Gasha

I sent it to the 4 architectures I was interested in. I was trying not
to spam everything. :)

Some people keep complaining when I do reply-all on debian lists.

I believe there has been talk about replacing Debian's sparc
architecture with the "sparc64" on debian-ports. But (to my
knowledge) the current sparc architecture in Debian has a 32 bit
userland[1].

Hi all,

Here is a little status update on the mails we have received so far.
First off, thanks to all the porters who have already replied!

So far, the *no one* has stepped up to back the following architectures:

   hurd-i386
   ia64
   mips
   mipsel
   s390x

I have pinged some people and #d-hurd, so this will hopefully be amended
soon. Remember that the *deadline is 1st of October*.

In the list above, I excluded:

amd64 and i386: requirement for porters is waived
s390: Being removed from testing during the Jessie cycle
(Agreement made during the Wheezy release cycle)

The following table shows the porters for each architecture in
*unstable* that I have data on so far:

armel: Wookey (DD)
armhf: Jeremiah Foster (!DD, but NM?), Wookey (DD)
kfreebsd-amd64: Christoph Egger (DD), Axel Beckert (DD),
Petr Salinger (!DD), Robert Millan (DD)
kfreebsd-i386: Christoph Egger (DD), Axel Beckert (DD),
Petr Salinger (!DD), Robert Millan (DD)
powerpc: Geoff Levand (!DD), Roger Leigh (DD)
sparc: Axel Beckert (DD), Rainer Herbst (!DD)

If you are missing from this list above, then I have missed your email.
Please follow up to this mail with a message-ID (or resend it,
whichever you prefer).

We also got a number of people interested in architectures not currently
in unstable. These are:

alpha: Bill MacAllister (!DD), Kieron Gillespie (!DD)
  arm64: Wookey (DD)
  parisc/hppa: Helge Deller (!DD)
  ppc64: Steven Gawroriski (!DD)
sparc64: Steven Gawroriski (!DD), Kieron Gillespie (!DD)

This will hopefully teach me to remember to include the "in unstable"
restriction to the next "roll call". :) Anyhow, if you are working on
these architectures on debian-ports and saw a new name in the list
above, this might be an opportunity to recruit new people.

We also received a couple of emails from people who are not or did not
want to be porters at the moment. However, they expressed an interest
in the architectures:

  David Kuehling: mipsel
- debug arch-related issues
  Meelis Roos: ppc, sparc64 (parisc)
- test and report bugs in upstream kernel
  Peter Green: armhf (possibly any-arm)
- works on raspbian

In the template email included in the roll call, we included some tasks
that people might be doing. These are the task people have said they
are doing for a given port.

  * test packages: armhf, kfreebsd-amd64 (x4), kfreebsd-i386 (x4),
 powerpc, sparc (x2)
  * fix toolchain issues: armhf, powerpc
  * triage arch-specific bugs: armhf, kfreebsd-amd64 (x3),
 kfreebsd-i386 (x3), powerpc, sparc (x2)
  * fix arch-related bugs: armhf, kfreebsd-amd64 (x3),
  kfreebsd-i386 (x3), powerpc
  * maintain buildds: armhf, kfreebsd-amd64, kfreebsd-i386

NB: I have manually translated some prose-text into the items above, so
something might have been lost (or gained) in that translation.

Some of the porters also added some new items. I have included some of
these items below:

  + test d-i "when needed": powerpc (x2)
  + maintain arch-related pkgs: kfreebsd-amd64, kfreebsd-i386
  + maintain non-DSA porter box: kfreebsd-amd64
  + maintain production system of $arch: sparc/stable
+ can offer hardware access[1]: sparc (Axel Beckert)
  + eglibc issues: kfreebsd-amd64, kfreebsd-i386
  + maintain+test cross-toolchains for $arch: armel, armhf
