If you take a look at the headers in the message, you will see that all mail is being filtered through spamassassin before handing it over to the list. Although you raise a very good point. I have a severe problem with this notion of a "whitehat" cracker. For example: If I left the keys in the door and someone unlocked my door, walked in and then called me and said "hey, stupid, i'm in your home -- I'm calling you from there, see!". I'd say "hey, thanks, now get out!" Its still an invasion, still wrong in the every sense of what "wrong is". Would I be happy that the person didn't steal my television or rifle my closet, sure... I'd be happy. But I'd also feel sort of violated and "robbed". Think about it. Regardless of how "stupid" you are, the law protects people that are dumb. Why should computers be treated differently? I think the point of a "cracker" being a white hat person only goes so far. To me, no cracker is a good cracker. If everyone knew that it was highly illegal and the penalty out weighed the crime, we wouldn't be having this list, and we wouldn't be having these discussion. my opinion of course.. but I'm entitled to it. BTW, as a related short story. Last week my office was broken into. The door was "jimmy'd" and all that was stolen was a radio and a CD... shit, a $35 sony radio and an Elvis Costello My Aim is True CD (bastards!). Anyway, when I called the police, they came in 15 mins, filed a report and told me they actually might know who it was based on an arrest that was made in the neighborhood. Great!!! Now, when I think of what a "crack" or breach into my network could do to my business, I get sick to my stomach. This is far worse than someone breaking into my office and stealing shit. The real problem is that I have people try and break in ALL THE TIME. I mean hourly... Who do I call? The police? Hell no, they haven't a clue To me, these attempts are far worse than some local thug looking for a few items to jack... Hello, First, you should (keep cool and ... ;o) ) know which dns server you are running. Look in the processes (ps -ax) if there is something like bind or djbdns, or anything that could be a dns server. The lsof command can help (look at what listens to port 53), as the dpkg and apt-get commands (see man dpkg and man apt-get : dpkg -s bind gives you the status of the bind package - apt-get remove bind removes the bind package and apt-get install bind installs it). When you know which dns you are running, type in man (server-name), like man bind. Also see /usr/share/doc/bind and /usr/share/doc/HOWTO/en-txt (there is a file called DNS-HOWTO.txt.gz (zless /usr/share/doc/HOWTO/en-txt/DNS-HOWTO.txt.gz) When you have read all those files, you should find a directory called /etc/bind - there you find named.conf, the general configuration file, and db. - containing your databases. Make man named.conf - and dont forget : a missing dot can make your dns not working properly ;) But bind is NOT the easiest one to configure. And it's NOT the most robust. But you should also be sure your domain names are registred (if your ip's are public and you want them to be accessed from outside, at least) - therefore, you have a procedure with the place you bought your domain names to say them that your dns (you have to give them your fixed ip adress) is authoritative for your zone - this means that when a dns request is done to any dns and your ip-FQDN is not cached there, the queried root dns will say that the client should ask your dns for the requested info. That's the first thing to do if you want your names to be resolved from outside. DNS is NOT an easy administration to do. Have a look at RFC 1034-RFC 1035 that gives more information about dns servers and dns logic. Btw this is a security list, if you have serious questions about bind or any other dns d's you should use another mailing list instead of that one, if you have security problems about bind we will be grateful to help you. If not, you can probably only simulate this authority in a lab environment, but I won't get into that. So, like Petro says: go and find the DNS howto at linuxdoc.org. You don't need a DNS server, and unless you have a network of more than 15 or 20 machines, or are running a large web site, you don't want to run one (unless you just want to learn. hi, I got a similar problem on a machine running IPCHAINS. after an upredictable time period the machine suddenly forgets the ethernet card and results 100% packet loss even ifconfig shows the interface is there and then crashes. I can see the card starts blinking and packets are coming but there is nothing in the log about that and the interface is there but it is not. I tried dist-upgrade ( only the base system was installed on it and mc nothing else ) and it did not help. I have changed the ethernet card and it did not help and as a result I changed the distribution to lame Redhat 6.2 for trial and it works, no problem after that my manager said " never touch a running system" so I could not switch back to debian. My kernel was 2.2.19 pre 17 and nothing unstable. I believe the problem is with the 2.2.19 kernel since the only difference between the base systems of redhat and debian 2.2r3 is 2.2.14 and 2.2.19 not much else. I finally ended up blaming it on a bad graphics card, switched to using the frame buffer and haven't had any trouble since.
