Problem Installing on Sparc5

2000-03-01 Thread Aaron Daniels
Hi,
I am trying to install Debian 2.1 on a Sparc5 System. Following the
advice of this mailing list I bought the Debian Sparc CD off the
cheapbytes.com website, It arrived and I threw it in the machine. At the
ok prompt I type boot cdrom and this is what I get,

SILO (then it sits for a while then,) Can't read disk label.
Can't open disk label package

Fatal Error: Couldn't open device
/[EMAIL PROTECTED],1000/[EMAIL PROTECTED],10001000/[EMAIL
PROTECTED],8400/[EMAIL PROTECTED],880/[EMAIL PROTECTED],0:a
Program terminated

and sometimes it doesnt even get to SILO,

Memory error during DMA transfer.
DMA control register = a400030e, DMA address ffdbd014
Extra scsi data, Fatal error.Memory error during DMA transfer.
DMA control register = a400030e, DMA address ffdbd013
Extra scsi data, Fatal error. Can't read disk label.
Can't open disk label package

After this I thought my cdrom was stuffed but them I popped in my
solaris CD and typed boot cdrom and it booted fine,
Could my CD's be stuffed. I would much prefer to run debian rather than
solaris, any idea whats going on?

Hmm, seems your CDROM is not configured for 512 bytes per sector.
Is it coming from a PC box ?
In this case you could have to change jumper settings to enable 512 b/s
instead of 2048. I know that almost Plextor units have ability to do that
(mine is a 40TSI). My Yamaha cdwriter can also do it (CDRW4260).

Regards.

P'rhaps, thoug I have more thqan one SS5/170 running happily without
major dramas. I've actaully found a repeatable failure mode with the
HME card, though.

ping -f some_local_host

generates and opps the first time and locks hard if repeated so I
think there's some interaction between the 100Mb interrupt spped and
the CPU/MMU.

Romain # int main(int argc, char** argv) { white(1) ; } #

I'm guessing that should be 'while' not 'white' :)
