Excellent, so you have a work around ~:^) Seriously, the kernel
version will only give you better performance (depending on what the
processor is), and who really needs that? Anyway, this sounds like
it could be something as silly as the whitespace character(s) used.

what do you mean with depending on what the processor is?
does NFS not work very well on ie sparc?

this is a bit OT, but i heard that NFS on linux has bad performance
anyway. someone with experience here? coda might be better?

Performance and security. Well NFS is insecure anyway and I'm sitting
behind a firewall, but ...

 Anyway, this sounds like
it could be something as silly as the whitespace character(s) used.
Can you test for certain what they are on the three lines? Because
it seems like the the second two lines are working, soo maybe
you used a tab or two when the kernel server only likes spaces or

The lines are formated equally all with spaces (0x20). And I have to
say that I did many many experiments with those lines. After deleting
the broken line one other took its place. It's not that easy. :-(((

All my machines running 2.4.recent and
nfs-kernel-server work fine (for me (tm)) and use only spaces.
Perhaps a bug report against nfs-kernel-server in the sense
'Does not work like nfs-user-server with very same configuration'
is appropriate? What do you think about that?

Kind regards

 Andreas.

does NFS not work very well on ie sparc?

There are many different sparc processors, that's what I mean. NFS
just isn't all that fast on my old hyperSPARC even though it is a
relatively fast one, for its time.

this is a bit OT, but i heard that NFS on linux has bad performance
anyway. someone with experience here? coda might be better?

I have extensive experience with both, and believe me coda is quite
slow by comparison. NFS on linux doesn't have the very well
multithreaded performance of the Solaris or HPUX implementations on
SMP systems, but hey, it costs less! For modest setups, is works
great, and with the same performance as solaris on single cpu
systems, ie., limited more by media speed or processor speed than
code execution speed.

Performance and security. Well NFS is insecure anyway and I'm sitting
 behind a firewall, but ...

When I said Seriously I was being facetious.

  Anyway, this sounds like
it could be something as silly as the whitespace character(s) used.
Can you test for certain what they are on the three lines? Because
it seems like the the second two lines are working, soo maybe
you used a tab or two when the kernel server only likes spaces or
  something silly like that.
The lines are formated equally all with spaces (0x20). And I have to
say that I did many many experiments with those lines. After deleting
the broken line one other took its place. It's not that easy. :-(((

Sounds like maybe something is wrong with the preceding lines. How
about deleting all the comment lines before hand. Or adding one.
Mine looks like this:

benedict:/usr/share/kernel-package# cat /etc/exports
# /etc/exports: the access control list for filesystems which may be
exported
# to NFS clients. See exports(5).
/ 10.0.0.0/255.0.0.0(rw,no_root_squash)
benedict:/usr/share/kernel-package#

Done several times when I was fighting against i386-NFS kernel server.
My box at home even shows the problem but I gave up fiddling around with
changing the sequence of lines or setting comments anywhere.

If a comment should be necessary at the top or somewhere else this is
a bug - a brain dead bug. Moreover it's undocumented and unaceptable
for me and I really do not want to waste my limited time to track down
brain dead bugs.

If no one has a better idea I think I will file a bug report in the next
couple of days.

Thanks for your comments

  Andreas.

mor appropraite for debian-users but ... replied to anyway

 1) I want to set up a mail server to download my mail from a POP account on
 www
 2) Have this downloaded mail available to various clients on my local lan
(windows linux machines) but all messages stored will be on the SS2 mail
 server/repository.

smb/nfs export home dirs and have your users store their mail there. (easy
to configure with all mail clients) and means you only have to backup the
home dirs off the sparc rather than each user's workstation.

apt-cache search pop3
apt-cache serach imapd

fetchamil and cucipop works well for my parent's home system. (4 users)
you could try imap or cyrus-imapd or wu-imapd. and the ssl variants
