Can you try 2.4.20-sun4u? It should work with 2.4.19-sun4u. I have a U5,
so I know it works.

X problems on Ultra 5

2003-05-05 Thread Ian Setford
Having a problem configuring Xfree86 to run on an Ultra 5 with an ATI Mach64
card. When I run X, I get one quarter of an X screen with my Afterstep
background but then my machine is locked up locally. I can get in remotely.
My first guess is that I have an improperly configured XF86Config file.
Anyone have an Ultra5 able to share theirs? Below are some files that might
help debug this.

Machine: Debian 3.x Unstable, 333MHz, 512MB RAM, kernel-image-2.4.19-sun4u

Yup. I've got a 120GB drive running fine in my Ultra 10. Only difference is
that I'm running sid, and not woody.

The actual (or somehow former) 20GB said goodbye, and 20 gigs drives
are now quite overpriced, so if I can use a bigger-for-less one...

Thanks in advance, sorry if it's a bit off topic.

Yup, entirely.

I found another IDE disk (6x the capacity!) and it works fine. I don't
know what was wrong before. I know the disk was jumpered properly. It
was a weird ancient disk, so who knows.

Now, one more question, to which I should know the answer by now: When
compiling the kernel in a default woody installation on this system, the
build fails because there is no sparc64-linux-gcc on the system. I've
worked around that problem in the past by making that a symlink to
gcc-3.0. What's the actual right thing to do?

I think i have found why XFree was so slow :

I run an : apt-get install 'xfonts.*transcoded'

If Finnish is available but not Swedish, you might report a bug. It
looks as though `se' should work instead of `fi', at least in Woody.

If necessary install `xkeycaps'. Then you can generate a file to use
with xmodmap to modify the layout. It knows about type5 Swedish.
(Previously you could put the result in ~/.xmodmap-$HOSTNAME to be
picked up when the server started, but that no longer works.)

RE: StorEdge A1000

2003-05-05 Thread SolariseXpert
Addition to Ben's comment: as you may already know, the configuration
utility you will need under Solaris is RAID Manager (it has an
executable binary called rm6 installed under /usr/lib/osa/bin). This is
an optional package that you can download from Sun's web site.

After configuring the array with RM6, the created LUNs will register to
the bus as regular drives. No special drivers needed to see them.

You'll have to boot into Solaris to setup the A1000. It works perfectly
well on Linux after that. auric.debian.org has an A1000 attached to it.
We have a small solaris partition just to manage the array, which is
never used. It's only there for disaster recovery (parity checks,
disabling failed drive, enabling hotswap replacement).

Have been discussing this with a hardware hacker associate of mine.
This isn't quite as easy as it sounds. There are commercially avaliable
boxes that will do SUN <-> PS/2 and that may be you best bet as I
believe they also convert the protocol.

> Then I am planning to run Debian instalation on the

Yes if it has drivers for it - X may have been compiled without them.

> Should I expect any problem with this installation?
Your mouse may not work - I suspect this will take a while to get
working. I guess the worst that will happen is that your machine will
simply refuse to recognise the keyboard at all and you'll have to
install via Serial.

> Should I use a particular mouse for the replacement ?
A Sun one? This is a genuine question - why does it need to be a PS/2
mouse? You can get Sun keyboards / mice very cheaply on eBay and that
will not only probabily be cheaper but less hassel than trying to wire
up a PS/2. If you are intent on it then go for as generic a mouse as
possible IMHO - if you start having to play with the Microsoft or
Logictec protocol extensions as well things are going to start getting
very complicated.

PS/2 mouse on Sparc Classic

2003-05-05 Thread Konstantin Porotchkin
I would like to connect a regular PS/2 mouse to Sparc
Classic instead of broken one which was made by SUN.
As I understood, it shouldn't be a problem from the
signalling point of view, I have just change the mouse
connector.
Then I am planning to run Debian instalation on the
same machine.
The question is - will Debian understand the new mouse
protocol (I am pretty sure that Solaris will not)?
Should I expect any problem with this installation?
Should I use a particular mouse for the replacement ?
Thanks
