Re: Installing Sun Sparc Ultra 10

2004-05-11 Thread mico
hello again,

The problem was the network card. After trying 4 different ones, i finally
found the good one !

Know everything works well ;)

Just one thing, imagine i want to recompil the kernel. I have to download
kernel 2.4.20 (the latest supported kernel for sparc?) and compil with a
special compiler or just usual gcc with specific sun4u options ?

Cheers,

mico

So are. Some fail for a variety of reasons. Check the archive for a
thread (about a month or two ago IIRC) about generic PCI cards in Sun
boxen.

> Maybe its only the PCI Riser that is not working. How could i check that ?
Make sure it is correctly seated and try plugging in known working PCI
cards. I have got a generic (Lucent chip set) PCI USB card working in
one of these.

> What could i do to make this card work ... ?
Sort out the PCI connectivity issue and then make sure the correct
modules are compiled and installed.

HTH

I'm running Debian unstable on an Ultra 5. Here is my lspci output:

It's got the built in ethernet card and I added an Intel 10/100 nic. They
both work, this box acts as my router/gateway. Maybe your riser card is to
blame? Have you tried another nic?

For the record, I don't have /proc/sys/kernel/modprobe either:

ultra:~# file /proc/sys/kernel/modprobe
/proc/sys/kernel/modprobe: can't stat `/proc/sys/kernel/modprobe' (No such
file or directory).

printing problems, Ultra 1, parport_sunbpp driver

2004-05-11 Thread Ola
Hi people,

I've been struggling with a HP LaserJet 1100A for some time now
without much success in getting sensible PostScript output. Some
background info:

sputnik:~# uname -a
Linux sputnik 2.4.25.040429 #1 Thu Apr 29 09:39:15 CEST 2004 sparc64
unknown
sputnik:~# lsmod | grep lp
lp 8344 0
parport32016 1 [lp parport_sunbpp]
sputnik:~# grep -e ^cpu /proc/cpuinfo
cpu : TI UltraSparc I (SpitFire)
sputnik:~# gs -v
GNU Ghostscript 6.53 (2002-02-13)

Right now I have lprng installed, and I manage to print ascii,
but that's all. When I try to print ps-files, the output consists of a
few lines of weird symbols (mostly dingbats). I've also tried
different drivers when printing from gs directly. The ljet4 driver gets
me weird symbols and the hpijs driver gives only error messages:

gs -q -dSAFER -dNOPAUSE -sDEVICE=ljet4 -r600x600 -sPAPERSIZE=a4
-sOutputFile=/dev/lp0 tmp.ps
I get weird symbols output.

sputnik:~# gs -q -dSAFER -dNOPAUSE -sDEVICE=ijs -sIjsServer=hpijs
-dDuplex=false -r600x600 -sPAPERSIZE=a4 -sOutputFile=/dev/lp0 tmp.ps

I have also tried cups using the hpijs driver and
HP-LaserJet_1100A-hpijs.ppd from linuxprinting.org without any
success. It seems like an output filter problem since I only get weird
symbols, but shouldn't gs take care of converting ps to pcl (with
appropriate driver)? I'm pretty much a newbie on Linux (sparc in
particular) so forgive me if the solution is trivial, or trivially
found by google (but I have searched).

Thanks,
/Ola

Installing Sun Sparc Ultra 10

2004-05-11 Thread mico
Hello,

I'm trying to install debian on Sun Sparc Ultra 5. The installation of
the base system went fine (network, file system, etc). But I needed to
put a second network card in the Sun station. This is were I started to
get some problems.
When I do lspci :

00:00.0 Host bridge: Sun Microsystems Computer Corp. Ultra IIi
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Sun Microsystems Computer Corp. Simba Advanced PCI
Bridge (rev13)
00:01.1 PCI bridge: Sun Microsystems Computer Corp. Simba Advanced PCI
Bridge (rev13)
01:01.0 Bridge: Sun Microsystems Computer Corp. EBUS (rev 01)
01:01.1 Ethernet controller: Sun Microsystems Computer Corp. Happy Meal
(rev 01)
01:02.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc 3D Rage Pro 215GP
(rev5c)
01:03.0 IDE interface: CMD Technology Inc PCI0646 (rev 03)

So this is clear, my network card (based on realtek 8139 chipset) is not
even detected when probing the pci slots ...

My question is : Are standard network cards compatible with Sparc Ultra 5 ?

Maybe its only the PCI Riser that is not working. How could i check that ?
What could i do to make this card work ... ?

I have another problem, when installing i allways get this error :
cannot create /proc/sys/kernel/modprobe noexistant
Why ? ( my partitions are good I think )

Thanks

mico
