Silo 0.9.3
Hi, has someone tried the new silo 0.9.3? I have some problems with my sparcstations, and could not test it well. In particular I need someone who can confirm that it works well on Ultra, as Ben Collins told me that silo 0.8.9 didn't work for him. For those who has a debian account, there is a silo_0.9.3.deb on kubrick.debian.org (~paci/new-build/). I have not put it on my home page on debian for those who need http, but I can do it, if someone told me which machine I have to use :) (master? va?). ciao -- Davide Barbieri [EMAIL PROTECTED] - http://www.prosa.it/ - commercial opensource support "Gli amici si vedono nel momento del reboot".

new silo package
based on Jacub silo 0.8.6-pre1, I have made available a new debian silo package, which could resolve some problem on Ultra; since I have no ultra available to test it, I'm asking if someone could grab the package from: ftp.prosa.it/pub/people/paci/silo/silo_0.8.6-1_sparc.deb and test if it can boot SunOS out of the box if someone can confirm that it works, I will upload to potato thanks ciao -- Davide Barbieri [EMAIL PROTECTED] - http://www.prosa.it/ - commercial opensource support [EMAIL PROTECTED] - http://www.debian.org/ - opensource linux distribution

silo libc
Ciao, I'm trying to build a libc with the functions needed by silo, to be able to statically link it. Some str* functions where written by Jacub, some others I have stolen from glibc sources, then I have put them togheter with little patches. After the functions, I need also some symbols, which I have added to ``silolibc''. At the moment, when linking silo with ``silolibc'' I have these errors: decomp.o: In function `decompress': decomp.o(.text+0x1788): undefined reference to `__sigsetjmp' cfg.o: In function `cfg_parse': cfg.o(.text+0x6b0): undefined reference to `__sigsetjmp' ../silolibc/silolibc.a(stringops.o): In function `time': stringops.o(.text+0x954): undefined reference to `__set_errno' make: *** [second] Error 1 Today, I have finish my spare time, so I can no longer work on it. I hope to continue tomorrow. If someone has time to complete this work, I would really appreciate. In particular, I have found difficults with __sigsetjmp, __set_errno, and ST_DIV0. I found __sigsetjmp in setjmp.S from glibc, but it #include traps.h, and the fails because traps.h is not asm code :-). Since, I'm not an expert with assembler code, how should I call gcc in this particular case? I wasn't able to find __set_errno in glibc sources, but I haven't time to grep any more. :-) Ciao -- Davide Barbieri - [EMAIL PROTECTED] - [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pluto.linux.it - Leggi il Contratto Sociale del PLUTO! The problem is still there. Silo must be linked with libc, and there's a conflict with __setjmp from silo sources. Jacub tell me, that jmp.o (with __setjmp definition) is called before libc, so it shoudn't be a problem. So, for this reason, and because sometimes it fails to link, and sometimes not, I think that I have a problem with ld. I'm using binutils version 2.8.1.0.17-1, am I using the wrong version? To make sys/stat.h and linux/stat.h coexists, I have added some #undef to silo sources, probably in the wrong way, causing that error. So, should I use or ? Any way, when I sobstitute those two lines with these one: sprintf (spart, "/dev/sda1"); sprintf (bootdev2, "/dev/sda1"); silo is able to install itself; anyway, the boot fails with only the two first letter: "SI" still working on it Ciao -- Davide Barbieri - [EMAIL PROTECTED] - [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pluto.linux.it - Leggi il Contratto Sociale del PLUTO! Ciao, my sparc machine won't work. I had problems with gcc, that I wasn't able to solve. So I decided to reinstall everything. The disks-sparc are a bit old, but they works ;-). Unfortunately I have to upgrade almost everything. I started with glibc (the last one), and then I upgraded the login package. Now I'm no more able to login. What's wrong? With the previous version of glibc I had a similar problem. My login and password were accepted, but root login procedure stopped before starting shell (su - had the same problem). I'm a bit tired of all this problems, now, so I'm not able to think about this new one. Everyone else has something to suggest? Uh? Aren't the sources on ftp.debian.org? I have uploaded a silo package a lot of time ago (now I'm working on a glibc silo), and sources should be there. I can't verify, my connection is terribly slow. Well, I should search them on my hard disk. tar problem...
Hi, I have problems with gcc, so I try to uninstall it, and reinstall. But when I make a 'dpkg -i gcc', it fails with this error: dpkg-deb: subprocess tar killed by signal (Bus error), core dumped dpkg: error processing gcc_2.7.2.3-3.deb (--install): subprocess dpkg-deb --control returned error exit status 2 Errors were encountered while processing: gcc_2.7.2.3-3.deb so, it's a tar problem. But tar is working well on my machine. Ah, I'm using the latest version for all of my packages. what have we to do?
Hi all, I think it is clear that none of us can work on glibc right now. So we are stick here, with a semi-broken glibc. I am pretty sure, that there will not be a glibc 2.0 for sparc linux. Hopefully RedHat guys are working on glibc 2.1 sources to get a stable glibc for sparc/linux, right? But they cannot made public release of glibc sources for sparc, until it is stable (this is what I guess from redhat sparc mailing list). We cannot upload packages compiled with libc5, and we cannot upload packages compiled with this broken glibc. So what are we going to do? Wait? Sure, I'm a bit confused by the situation... I think that the problem with the sparc arch, is especially with GNU software. I mean that a "sparc patch" for a generic program, is obviously well accepted. This seems not to be true with GNU software. So if you want to compile gcc, or glibc, or binutils, you have to refer to redhat patches. I have never understood why sparc patches for gcc or glibc, or any other GNU programs, are not yet in the standard source tree, even if they are available since years. gdb available
Hi, while I'm still trying to understand what is (or could be) wrong in my gcc package, I made a gdb package for debian sparc. It is available via anonymous ftp on test.dei.unipd.it:/pub/debian It is version 4.16-6, and not 4.16-1 because I have first tried to compile the original package for i386 debian, then modified it when necessary (almost applying RedHat patches). This is the standard policy we should use (I think): we need to have only one source file, which have to generate the binary for every architecture. Let me know if you find any bugs on gdb-4.16: I'm using since two days, without problems. Ciao PS> I'm sure that the gdb package will also be available on lix.polytechnique.fr in few hours (thanks Eric) :-)

Doc on Debian Sparc Porting
Hi, I hope this document will help Debian Sparc porting... - Status of Debian Sparc Porting Davide Barbieri, [EMAIL PROTECTED] 21 Gennaio 1997 Debian Sparc is a work in progress. It is not yet ready, but you can work with dpkg in order to install some part of it, on an existing linux box. 1. How to install Debian You must install RedHat 4.0. Yes, it's true. RedHat is the only distribution which can be installed on a Sparc machine, without much more effort than installing it on a PC. But you can install dpkg on your RedHat system, and you can try to install some .deb packages. From Bdale Garbee: o pull the cpio sources from the 'bo' tree, unpack them, and do a build followed by a "make install"... the cpio which ships with RedHat isn't good enough for dpkg. o pull the dpkg sources from the 'bo' tree, unpack them, and do a build followed by a "make install" this will give you a copy of dpkg that's good enough for installing .deb files. You may have to hack to keep it from trying to build the docs, since they depend on a lot of Debian-specific tools, and you may have problems building dselect. My approach was to be vicious about whacking the Makefile to get around such problems until I had a dpkg installed and working well enough to build other packages. o the first time you try to run dpkg, it will complain about some files not existing. I just "touch"'ed the files as they were complained about and dpkg seemed to do the right things. Once you get a "dpkg --list" to correctly show you that there are no installed packages, you can grab some/all of the .deb files in the directory tree on master.debian.org and try installing them. o One of the hacks I've pulled is to symlink /etc/init.d and the /etc/rc*.d directories to their RedHat counterparts in /etc/rc/, so that as I install things, like xntpd, that need daemon launches, they actually do the right things. On every site mirroring Debian, you can find a directory bo/binary- sparc. Try to install some of these packages (almost documentation, which wouldn't hurt your system), and see if everything goes well. Actually, via anonymous ftp, on test.dei.unipd.it, you can get some 'base' Debian packages for sparc. You can try them, but pay attention, because they can really hurt your system! 2. Who is working on the port? The leader is Bdale Garbee [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Davide Barbieri [EMAIL PROTECTED] is trying to help. 3. How can I help? First of all join the debian-sparc mailing list. Then try to install some of the packages already built, and report errors on debian-sparc. If you can, pick up some debian sources, and try to compile them. 4. Disclaimer Let's say that this document is (C) 1996 by me, Davide Barbieri [EMAIL PROTECTED] . But most of the things are taken from what Bdale Garbee has said or done. This is a little document, but I hope it will grow, to help people use and contribute to Debian Sparc porting project. I don't want to make my sparc unbootable. > One of the hacks I've pulled is to symlink /etc/init.d and the /etc/rc*.d > directories to their RedHat counterparts in /etc/rc/, so that as I install > things, like xntpd, that need daemon launches, they actually do the right > things. done it. > > What debian for Sparc need? > > Almost everything. :-) As of now, you and I are "it". > > We need a complete set of base packages to build a base system from, and we > need enough of the devel packages built (plus other random things) so that > once > we can bootstrap a base system, it can be a self-hosting development for > further package builds... and a clean rebuild of all of the low-level > packages. yes, obviously! bye Davide -- Davide Barbieri * Direttore editoriale PLUTO Journal - Linux Magazine [EMAIL PROTECTED] * http://www.dei.unipd.it/it/linux/pluto -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Yes, obviously: i want to help. I'm the coordinator of PLUTO, the italian linux user group. I have so much thing to do, but I can always find some time to work on debian for sparc. Debian Sparc Linux
Sorry, probably I'm stupid, but I can't find any information about Debian for Sparc/Linux. Can someone give me a pointer to check the status of the Debian porting? I have an LX, with RedHat running on it, but I want Debiannn!!! :-) bye -- ****** * Davide Barbieri * Direttore editoriale PLUTO Journal * * [EMAIL PROTECTED] * http://www.dei.unipd.it/it/linux/pluto * ** -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] .
