Eventually the mount succeeds and i can access the data.
Is this a known problem? (I could not find any recent posts about this).
I use kernel 2.2.19 (woody installation kernel) on a SS 20.
I makes no difference if the NFS server is Linux or FreeBSD, so it seems to
 be a
   client problem.

 Any ideas?

I have a similar problem on my Ultra10 with Creator 3D. Any movie shows
with some kind of noise, like some colors get inverted. Looks really
funny, though...
Well just noticed that this is history now. After updating XFree86
(4.1.0.1) the noise is gone. I used to watch the movies on the on-board
ati graphic card but now they work on the Creator 3D, too. SDL things
still have noise.

How do you get this transparent menues? And why is your klipper so damn
cool? Anything special?

The washed out colors are almost certainly due to the code picking a

prefer a bigger gamma correction value...

There should be a way to set it, but unfortunately I don't know how to

Re: build kernel 2.4.19

2002-09-11 Thread Hakan Kuecuekyilmaz
try this one from Ben:
snip
If you are using Debian, I strongly suggest using the kernel-package
package. It simplifies building, installing and managing your kernel
images. You would just do something like this:

cd /usr/src/linux
make menuconfig (again, whatever you prefer)
make-kpkg kernel-image
cd ..
dpkg -i kernel-image-x.x.x_sparc.deb

Much simpler. Then you can install multiple versions, and use any of
them by having them in /etc/silo.conf or just change the symlink (or
just use the silo command line). You can also easily remove them, just
like any other package. It also saves the configuration of that kernel
as /boot/config-x.x.x.

The -C option deals with compression if I am not mistaken. Perhaps I
wasn't clear in my original message, but once the session is
established I have no problem at all. It's the process of logging in
that takes 10 seconds or so.

This is probably a DNS resolve-issue: sshd cannot find a hostname for
 the
IP address you connect from. The resolving process slows your
 inititial
connection. Try adding the IP-address and some (bogus) hostname for
 the
machine you connect /from/ (client) to /etc/hosts on the machine you
connect /to/ (server). Or have reverse DNS fixed.

This could be a reason, too. But it is true that that connecting to/from
a sparc machine tooks very long with ssh.
To get it faster it is possible to recompile some packages with v8 or v9 flags.
The exact details are somewhere on this list. I tried it and had improvements
about 5x - 10x faster.

Bye
I thought it was also possible to disable reverse name lookups for
 sshd
but can't find it quickly in the man pages.

audio issue

2002-08-19 Thread Hakan Kuecuekyilmaz
Hello,

I am running an Ultra10 debian/unstable with custom 2.4.19 kernel.
Now I am trying to record some audio on my box, playing audio is no
problem. Since I have no handbook of my Ultra10 I do not know exactly
which socket is for what.

I guess the sockets are: (view from the back)

[] [] for recording?

[] [] for playback, which works..

I installed some audio programs, when I try to record sound from line in
some programs are crashing, some hanging and other do not record
anything.
Does anybody knows which socket is for what? Is it possible to record
audio with Ultra10?

PS: Does anybody run mplayer on an Ultra10 (I have a big problem with
sound on mplayer, too..)

Well, I mount NFS partitions under woody from Solaris, so I'll
mention a couple of things that you might want to try.

First, are you sure that you have the proper nfs packages
installed? Check by typing dpkg -l nfs-client .

Next, try mounting the partition with fewer options. For a first
try, just use the defaults. If that works, add back in your
options one by one and see what happens.

Harddisc formating

2002-02-12 Thread Hakan Kuecuekyilmaz
Hello,

yesterday I tried to repartition and format my 40GB Harddisc but
for partitions 2GB it says:
'File size limit exceeded'

I tried with a Sun Disklabel, with Dos Label, logged in via ssh, made su -
logged in as root, tried ext2 and ext3, - still same error.

I have a UltraSparc10 with debian/sid 2.4.17 running. Is this a kernel
related 'feature', because the disc was running with a 40GB partition on
ext3 before yesterday.

Any hints are welcome

Exactly how are you trying to do this? What program are you using?

  Hi Ben,

  following things:

logged in via gdm as user into gnome

  typed 'su -'
  then
  'fdisk /dev/hdb'
typed 'o' (kernel does handle it)
  maked some partitions:

Try logging in as root on the terminal. I bet you are getting bitten by
some sort of ulimit. Either that or in gnome-terminal:

 exec /bin/login

hi,

did control+alt F1 to get to a terminal (tty1)
logged in as root

same error message,
when i say 'ulimit -c unlimited' and make a
mke2fs -j /dev/hdb1 it says

File size limit exceeded (core dump)
hmm?

Well, you loaded SCSI, but it doesn't appear that you loaded the

But 'mount -t ext2 /dev/sda1 /mnt/test' says:

mount -t ext2 /dev/sda1 /mnt/test
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda1,

I made a 'fdisk' and created a sun disklabel with 's' but the parameter rotating

again, because the machine can read dos formatted floppies.

Any further hints?

You have to make a partition. Why do you want to make a dos or vfat
partition on a Sun disk? I'm hoping you mean just a normal partition,
 which you would do:

 mke2fs /dev/sda1

I made mk2fs -J size=8 /dev/sda1 on a dos disklabel, now everything is fine.

scsi pci card on ultra10

2002-01-13 Thread Hakan Kuecuekyilmaz
Hello,

I attached a Adaptec 2940 and a Fujitsu M2513A into my Ultra10.
Then configured the kernel to support scsi, after a 'mount /dev/sda
/test'
I get 'mount: /dev/sda is not a valid block device'.
'lsmod' says:

sd_mod 12488 0 (autoclean) (unused)
scsi_mod 100640 1 (autoclean) [sd_mod]

How can I get this Fujitsu working? Maybe I am missing something
important?

The 2940 is the first pci card which I put into the Ultra10, do I have
to set jumpers for the card?

2.4.13 ext3

2001-10-28 Thread Hakan Kuecuekyilmaz

Hello,

I downloaded 2.4.13 and ac-patch3.

Now I have a working 2.4.13ext3 kernel. It seems to me that my ultra10
is booting much faster now.
Only LVM was not compileable. Shutdown makes some problems to, but with
ext3 it doesnt hurts really.

My question: do I have to patch the kernel with ac1, ac2 and then with
ac3 or only with ac3?

2001-10-26 Thread Hakan Kuecuekyilmaz
Hello,

I have still a massive problem with my ultra10, when I am logging out of
gnome/gdm my system freezes completely (stop+a dos not work any more, too).

I am wondering which logs I have to examine to get rid of this annoying problem.
May someone had the same problem.
Using 2.4.9 / woody.

Newer binutils changed the output of --version. If you edit
arch/sparc64/Makefile, look for the NEW_GAS line, and change --version
to -V, it will work again.

2.4.12

2001-10-24 Thread Hakan Kuecuekyilmaz
Hello,

actually I am running Ultra10 with 2.4.9, but I have problems with gnome/gdm.
Logging out of gnome always ends up with a system freeze, even stop+a does no
more work.
If I kill the X-server instead of logging off, I get kernel messages with this
funny guy looking over a wall and X does not work till reboot.

So I tried to compile 2.4.9 with ext3 patch, but ...
2.4.12 is compile able but I cannot find an ext3 patch.

How get I ext3 or another jfs work on my ULTRA10?

As I guess you are trying to install woody, because I had the same error

I actually installing potato and then updating to woody, which causes a

/vmlinuz-2.2.19-sun4u at the openprom instead of /vmlinuz

I've tried to put the whole disk type (5) on hda3 : same result.

I've tried not to include modules in the kernel : same result.

I've tried both distribution : test and unstable : same result.

Apparently, if I restart the machine and I try the option Make Hard Disk

potato-woody

2001-08-23 Thread Hakan Kuecuekyilmaz

Hello,

I was running woody for about four weeks on an ultra10 till I messed
upped the system. So I had to install woody again.

The new installation ended in a horror story:
I am installing for three days now.
Installing woody directly does not work. So I installed potato then
edit sources.list, and did an apt-get upgrade,

I was surprised how much was apt-get going to do, but I said yes and
apt-get hanged after a while because of a missing library.

So today I tried it again, but before the upgrade I made a apt-get
install perl. apt get showed again a lot of to do (I think a lot more
then it would be good), but it ran all ok.

Now I have woody running again, but to my surprise
apt-get install postgresql says Sorry, postgresql is ...newest version
cat /var/lib/postgres/data/PG_VERSION says 6.5.
I *need* at last 7.x, so what is wrong with apt-get or the lists,
because a few weeks ago, the same procedure had installed me postgresql
7.1.x. like a charm.

PS: I have to admit that I am a Debian-Sparc Newbie, maybe I am doing
something fundementally wrong...
