No one has been able to help me fix it yet. The desktop looks pretty nice, though. I have transparent menus and kicker in KDE working, and it looks really cool. The washed out colors are almost certainly due to the code picking a visual with an unexpected gamma correction value. When the data goes into the RAMDAC, it can go through either an uncorrected path, or one that adjusts for the (presumed) properties of the monitor. Most people prefer a bigger gamma correction value... There should be a way to set it, but unfortunately I don't know how to do that. Re: build kernel 2.4.19
try this one from Ben: snip If you are using Debian, I strongly suggest using the kernel-package package. It simplifies building, installing and managing your kernel images. You would just do something like this: cd /usr/src/linux make menuconfig (again, whatever you prefer) make-kpkg kernel-image cd .. dpkg -i kernel-image-x.x.x_sparc.deb Much simpler. Then you can install multiple versions, and use any of them by having them in /etc/silo.conf or just change the symlink (or just use the silo command line). You can also easily remove them, just like any other package. It also saves the configuration of that kernel as /boot/config-x.x.x. Use the -C when opening an ssh session. ssh -C -l user host. The -C option deals with compression if I am not mistaken. Perhaps I wasn't clear in my original message, but once the session is established I have no problem at all. It's the process of logging in that takes 10 seconds or so. This is probably a DNS resolve-issue: sshd cannot find a hostname for the IP address you connect from. The resolving process slows your inititial connection. Try adding the IP-address and some (bogus) hostname for the machine you connect /from/ (client) to /etc/hosts on the machine you connect /to/ (server). Or have reverse DNS fixed. This could be a reason, too. But it is true that that connecting to/from a sparc machine tooks very long with ssh. To get it faster it is possible to recompile some packages with v8 or v9 flags. The exact details are somewhere on this list. I tried it and had improvements about 5x - 10x faster. Quoting Del Campo, Damian [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Hi, I'm still struggling to install Debian to my Sparc2 from floppies. I have 2x 1.3Gb and 1x 440Mb disks I partition them all as Sun Disk Label and then delete partition 1 2 to create the ones I want. The end result (with approx sizes) /sda1 linux nativeu 50Mb/boot /sda2 linux nativeu 800Mb / /sda3 whole disk 1300Mb /sda4 linux swap 450Mb swap /sdb1 linux nativeu 800Mb /usr /sdb2 linux nativeu 500Mb /var /sdb3 whole disk 1300Mb /sdc1 linux nativeu 340Mb /home /sdc2 linux nativeu 100Mb /storage /sdc3 whole disk 440Mb where u = mountable flag. I get through the install but can't make the system bootable from the hard disk. WTF am I doing wrong ??? That you can't boot the system from hard-disk helpes not much here. Could you describe exactly why your system don't boot or where it hangs? regards -- Hakan Kuecuekyilmaz, presently intern at Tecnomatix Technologies Germany | Tel: +49 711 1389- 257 Mittlerer Pfad 9| [EMAIL PROTECTED] 70 499 Stuttgart| [EMAIL PROTECTED] - This mail sent through IMP: webmail.fht-esslingen.de
Re: how to install new kernel
Thomas Duffy wrote: after installing it I have a symlink /vmlinuz - boot/vmlinuz-2.4.7 But my machine wont reboot. How do I have to upgrade my kernel, what packages do I need? well, this symlink seems to be pointing to wrong kernel. or was that a typo? (2.4.7 should be 2.4.9 if you installed that package). it was a typo, it points to *.9 I would make sure that your silo package is also up to date. and what does your /etc/silo.conf look like? Re: Debian on SunBlade 100 installation error
Reynald MESSERLI wrote: Hello, I'm new to debian and sparc. I'm trying to install Debian on my SunBlade 100, but I'm stuck at the end of the first part of the installation process. I netboot the sun on a freebsd server using the current tftpboot.imp of Ben Collins. The installation starts without problem. I use the following partition sheme on the hard disk: hda1 /boot hda2 /swap hda3 /root hda4 /usr hda5 /home hda6 /var I use the network installation. I add the following module to the kernel : autofs, nfsd, isofs. All the download process goes well until it tries to install the packages. It stops with the following message on the screen: Installing essential packages. At this stage the machine is completely frozen and I have to cold boot. As I guess you are trying to install woody, because I had the same error as I tried to install woody on my ultra10. I actually installing potato and then updating to woody, which causes a lot of trouble. By the way if you are going to install potato and the machine is not booting after you have installed - try /vmlinuz-2.2.19-sun4u at the openprom instead of /vmlinuz I've tried to put the whole disk type (5) on hda3 : same result. I've tried not to include modules in the kernel : same result. I've tried both distribution : test and unstable : same result. Apparently, if I restart the machine and I try the option Make Hard Disk Bootable, it tells me that it cannot install SILO. Thank you all for your help. potato-woody
Hello, I was running woody for about four weeks on an ultra10 till I messed upped the system. So I had to install woody again. The new installation ended in a horror story: I am installing for three days now. Installing woody directly does not work. So I installed potato then edit sources.list, and did an apt-get upgrade, I was surprised how much was apt-get going to do, but I said yes and apt-get hanged after a while because of a missing library. So today I tried it again, but before the upgrade I made a apt-get install perl. apt get showed again a lot of to do (I think a lot more then it would be good), but it ran all ok. Now I have woody running again, but to my surprise apt-get install postgresql says Sorry, postgresql is ...newest version cat /var/lib/postgres/data/PG_VERSION says 6.5. I *need* at last 7.x, so what is wrong with apt-get or the lists, because a few weeks ago, the same procedure had installed me postgresql 7.1.x. like a charm. PS: I have to admit that I am a Debian-Sparc Newbie, maybe I am doing something fundementally wrong... regards -- Hakan Kuecuekyilmaz, FHT-Esslingen [EMAIL PROTECTED] [...
