That's not trivial. But interesting nonetheless. I asume you want to do that
for educational purposes? (I mean, we already do supply those builds.)

> but cannot seem to find it. Could someone point me to it ? Thank you.

Via http://ftp.debian.org/ one can find e.g.
http://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/b/bash/bash_5.0-4.debian.tar.xz .

But that would not be the way to go for it. Finding sources it least of your
problems.

If you're starting from a Debian non-sparc system, check out
https://wiki.debian.org/CrossCompiling .

If you're starting from a non-Debian sparc system, maybe
https://wiki.debian.org/DebianBootstrap would be helpful.

I think you'd have to create yourself a USB stick with

Yup.

However, http://www.freebsd.org/where.html indicates Sparc64 is still fully
supported by FreeBSD. Debian GNU/kFreeBSD only ships for amd64 and i386.
Perhaps porting it to sparc64 would be more future-proof than trying to get
Linux back to sparc64?

 - another Ultra 5 Sun SPARC station
 - an Ultra 10 Sun SPARC station
 - a huge Sun crt monitor
 - a SunBlade 1000 (tower model, huge and heavy)
 - a HP Proliant DL 360 1 U rackmountable server
G4, intel xeon processor
 - 6 more of those: Six HP Proliant DL 360 1 U rackmountable servers, G4p, 2x
36 GB disk, 2 GB ram, 2 x dual core Xeon 3 GHz CPU. Of course: hardware
raid support, iLO console access, hot swappable drives
 - lots of old Sun SPARC and PC periferals (cables,
mostly: SCSI, monitor stuff, lots of powercables, ...)

If you're interested and would like to use it, make an appointment with me &
come and pick it up in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. If there's no interest,
I'll bring it to the milieustraat / dump within a couple of weeks.

I'd guess skilled hacker time is more needed than hardware.
Reading https://release.debian.org/jessie/arch_qualify.html ,
it seems major blocking issues are: "Using gcc-4.6 as default compiler"
and "Have to run oldstable kernels". Related to this: only 1 porter,
only partial upstream support.

Up to now, I've found 2 people interested. (Ward and Simon). This means I'll

systems are quite cluncky. They're about 10 years old. Debian GNU/Linux and
some BSD's and some other distro's are known to be installable and supported on
these systems. See also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_Fire .

xauth is the one you need for tunneling X through ssh.

Don't set DISPLAY. ssh -X should take care of that.
Without export DISPLAY it might just work.

AFAIK Oracle ships instantclient for amd64 and i386 only

I'd try to use the lenny-installer and upgrade from that. Ugly, but
will likely take you less time.

free pick up: Sun SPARC hardware

2011-11-17 Thread Joost van Baal-Ilić
Hi,

Tilburg University wants to get rid of some old hardware.

- Sun SPARC Ultra 5 (very old, small)

- Sun Fire 280 R "uvtws1" (you need 2 man to lift it: big) With FiberChannel
HBA
   connected to disc cabinet

- Sun Enterprise 220 R "kubsu3" (same size/weight as uvtws1)

- Sun StorEdge T3 disc cabinet (9 discs, probably between 20 and 90 GB total
storage)

- Digital DLT SCSI tapedrive DS-TZ89N-TA (collectors item!)

You can come and pick it up for free (i.e. gratis). Be sure to have
some means of transportation.

If you're interested, send an email to LIS Unix Hardware
and make an arrangement about time.
Be sure to mention exactly what you're interested in. Be quick!

The systems are located at the Tilburg University campus, in The Netherlands.
Generally we're available at weekdays from about 9:00 till about 17:30. Let us
know what time suits you.

BTW: we like cake.

Bye,

Joost

http://www.debian.org/ports/index should be changed, here's a pseudo-patch:

s/
This port runs on the Sun SPARC station series of workstations, as well as some
of their successors in the sun4 architectures.
/
This port runs on the Sun SPARC Ultra series of workstations, as well as some
of their successors in the sun4 architectures.

http://www.debian.org/ports/sparc/ should be changed:

s/
Supported is Sun4u machines
/
Supported are sun4u and sun4v machines
/

and

s/

/
does support the sun4u (“Ultra”) and sun4v (Niagara CPU) architecture

I believe the current stable installation manual is correct.

Issues with www.debian.org reported as bug.
