 Hi Steven and Denyer,

We are *also* sad to see sparc32 go, but these kinds of messages are only
a repeat of similar reactions on earlier threads.

What we need to sparc32 alive - not only in Debian, but in Linux in
general - is not people who are sad, but people who are willing to invest
time and energy to fix the issues there are, to make sure sparc32 is
supported in the software (kernel, toolchain, whatever) and who are
 committed to _keeping_ it maintained.
Being sad unfortunately does not help with that at all.

As to alternatives, what you should be looking for is somewhere where
there is a vibrant sparc32 community, including people who are not just
sad, but who are actually doing work to maintain the port.
I have no idea if NetBSD has such a community or not.

I fully understand what you're saying. The problem is that it would
appear that most of the people who USE the sparc32 port are not the
people who have the skills to develop it. I count myself in that
group. I am not a C hacker - I wish I was. I would give my right arm
to be able to support the project with code.

Oh well...

Regards,
Ozz.

I agree. SPARC-32 might still have its place as an introduction for people
 with
no experience of Sun machines if that's all they can get hold of, but I can't
see anybody in their right mind expecting to run fancy animated graphics on
 it.

It all depends what you use the box for. I run IceWM on my 170MHz
SPARCstation 5. I agree that it's not suited for watching movies, etc,
but it's still a useful box.

Thanks for your offer. As the future of the sparc32 port is uncertain at
best, the machines must most certainly be sparc64.

Ouch - I use Sparc32 myself.

If Sparc32 was ok, I could possibly provide access to such a box.
The company I work for is, among other things, a local ISP, so we have
plenty of bandwidth. Most of our hardware is AMD/Intel, but we do have
some Sparc systems that I could possibly make available.

I mean: I could login via the network ...
Serial console onto serial port: use minicom at the other end

 Send 9600,8,N,1 data

That should do it - I've done similar on an Alpha machine.

I installed Debian on a SPARCstation 5 that way, too.

 Someone should fill it in.

I note that it only lists 89 sites using Debian-SPARC.

How do we go about adding our own sites to it?

We run it ourselves on quite a few servers (Fire v210, etc.), and
want to migrate our remaining SUN boxen to Debian, but we have obvious
concerns about the level of support for the arch. I even run it at
home on my SS5.

As long as we know the arch is not gonna go away, and will remain
supported, it will be a lot easier to get more people using it. At the
moment, I feel that many people are being put off by the existing
issues with the port. At the moment, installing Debian on a v210 is
painful.

Ozz.
