Ben,
The following are the links to the files that may be useful to debug the
problem :

http://www.csee.wvu.edu/~aravind/XF86Config-4
http://www.csee.wvu.edu/~aravind/XFree86.0.log

Any suggestions? I have set the default desktop environment to gnome. I
rebooted the machine and even tried to restart X using startx but the
problem seems to be same, no display. It just shows me a blank black
screen, even if X is running in the background.

thanks,
Aravind

You'll have to elaborate on nothing will display. Do you mean it gives
you a blank screen, the X blank/white checkered background and cursor,
or just something else you were not expecting?

Do you get an error? Try emailing us your /var/log/XFree86.log, and
 possible /etc/XF86Config-4.

You can try the kernel-image-2.4.18, I was using using
kernel-image-2.2.20 and the problem was the same. When you install it,
it just works.

I hope your monitor is a big fat one that can handle the high refresh
rate the card is trying to push. I spent ages wondering why X wasnt
working, it would start and run fine etc. But then i tried the ueber fat
arse monitor the guy next door had, perfect first time. :)

Cheers

I could run xfree, but it is so slow, i had to deactivate dri in the
xfree86config-4 to could run, how could i activate that?

Install the afbinit package, and then locate the proprietary firmware.
Just follow the instructions in /usr/doc/afbinit/README.Debian. You can
usually locate a copy of the firmware by searching for afb.ucode at
google.

I use an Elite3D with my U30, and it works fairly well when the
microcode is loaded.
