Err

I fixed a bug with that at one point - I didn't think anyone mod disks
like that :| The "",s should be underscores IIRC in cdroms.list

Still a problem (apt-get won't recognize when right cd is in drive).

I'm sorry to say this didn't work. However...

I have to admit I haven't tried this yet. I prefer to
try to upgrade off the cds first, however if that
doesn't work I will try this.

Thanks for this info, I downloaded this page and was able to
update my kernel and apt-get and dpkg (and libc).

However, when I try to do the final step:

apt-get dist-upgrade

I still get the message telling me to put disk 1 of potato in
the cdrom drive, even when I have already put that disk there.

I wiped out the /etc/apt/sources.list and /var/state/apt/cdroms.list,
and re-created them (yet) again with apt-cdrom add, and this
problem still exists. Once again I tried editing the cdroms.list
file by hand but that didn't help (nor make things worse).

I looked in /var/log/messages but no apt-messages there... is
there another place to look for apt failure messages?

Do I really have to download the woody version of apt to make
this work?

Since apt-get install worked on individual packages (kernel-image,
apt, etc), I suppose I could do that for each of the 451 upgraded,
and 69 new packages, but it seems that apt-get dist-upgrade should
be able to do it by itself.

I did try to mount the disks, and look at them. They seem
fine. I unmounted again before trying again.

The only thing I can notice is that the /cdrom/.disk/info file
contains
Debian GNU/Linux 2.2 0a "Potato" - Official sparc Binary-2 (2818)
while the apt-get program asks for
Debian GNU/Linux 2.2 0a _Potato_ - Official sparc Binary-2 (2818)

But I assume that the apt-get program identifies the disk by
the cd id number, not the label, so this shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for your help so far.

Basically all the repitition on those CD's is confusing apt. Try just
using the last two (the 2.2 0a Official ones).

apt slink->potato using cds (long post)

2000-11-05 Thread Brenda J. Butler

I have a really slow net connection so upgrading over that
is out of the question.

I have a cdrom, and I have three sets of cdroms:

(extracted from /var/state/apt/cdroms.list:)

Debian GNU_Linux slink (2.1_r4) 1_4 main binary-sparc section 1 SAM19991221
Debian GNU_Linux _Potato_ - sparc Binary-1 (2520)
Debian GNU_Linux _Potato_ - sparc Binary-2 (2520)
Debian GNU_Linux _Potato_ - sparc Binary-3 (2520)
Debian GNU_Linux 2.2 0a _Potato_ - Official sparc Binary-2 (2818)
Debian GNU_Linux 2.2 0a _Potato_ - Official sparc Binary-1 (2818)

The slink distribution was installed on my sun sparc 20, and has
never been upgraded. I'm trying to upgrade now. That means
I'm using the apt suite that came with the slink distribution
above.

So I created the above cdroms.list and the /etc/apt/sources.list
using the apt-cdrom add command.

That resulted in a sources.list and cdroms.list like these:

/etc/sources.list
