FWIW, I went ahead and tried the loadlin deal from the DOS config.sys multi-boot and it worked flawlessly. I used the defaults from the manual.txt as examples, and copied my linux kernel from my floppy boot diskette for the boot image. The line is: shell=c:\loadlin\loadlin.exe c:\loadlin\linux root=/dev/hdd1 ro vga=ask I'll try the loading from the NT boot menu directly after I Install NT5 beta 2 since I removed beta 1, as most of it doesn't work... Talking about enlightenment, can you enlighten me on a off-topic question? What does it mean something to be GNOME compliant? GNOME COMPLIANCE in the window manager sense means that the window manager and the various GNOME apps (mostly the panel) can set hints that each other are able to understand. For a better explanation read about it on www.gnome.org. I do not claim to know much more than that. Re: Compiling the kernel?
Well, not knowing any better, I fixed it by uninstalling my header and source packages (2.0.33), reinstalling the libc6-dev package, and then installing bin86 and the 2.0.34 source and header packages. This left the usr/include directories (asm, linux, scsi) NOT set up as links. This is contrary to the source documentation, but agrees with the Debian licb6-dev document that Bob mentioned. The configure and compile then went without a hitch, and make zImage left the kernel image file (278k)in arch/i386/boot as expected. It also left a file called vmlinux of about 680k in /usr/src/linux. I don't know the purpose of that file. Lilo didn't complain, and the 2.0.34 kernel boots and runs with no problems - and it seems faster (my imagination maybe). Thanks for all the help - it feels good! Tom Tom Pfeifer wrote: Hello, I'm a fairly new Linux user, and am really starting to enjoy Linux and the Debian distribution. Anyway, I'm trying to learn how to configure and compile the kernel. I have the 2.0.33 kernel source and header packages properly installed (dpkg is happy anyway), and the /usr/include links set up correctly as stated in the source documentation. I then do the following: cd /usr/src/linux make mrproper make xconfig (then configure, save, and exit) make dep make clean make zImage The compile proceeds for a few minutes, and then exits with these lines: as86 -0 -a -o bootsect.o bootsect.s make[1]: as86 Command not found make[1]: *** [bootsect.o] Error 127 make[1]: Leaving directory 'usr/src/kernel-source-2.0.33/arch/i386/boot' make: *** [zImage] Error 2 It does leave a vmlinuz image file in /usr/src/linux which is about the same size as my current kernel, but when I install it in /boot and run lilo, it complains about kernel image too large, or similar words. I restored the original so it's no problem as far as running, but does anyone have an idea what the problem might be, or where to read up on it? Will appreciate any help. Re: URGENT hamm install help needed
If the size of your installed system is 400Mb, the disk space required is 400Mb + space for the .deb files + working space. You can delete the .deb files after they are installed (dselect does this for you). So downloading fewer packages might help you. Here is the approach that I use: I divide my installation into parts: emacs, tetex, X, and everything else. I do my installation in phases, starting with 'everythging else'. Unless you have deleted them, the .deb that dselect downloaded for you are in /var/lib/dpkg/methods/ftp/debian/dists/frozen/main/binary-i386 If you feel adventurous, you could try deleting stuff that you dont need to install right away (say stuff in x11, tex, and editors) to give yourself some working room. Then install some other packages by hand using dpkg -i nameofpackage.deb. Delete any .deb files that you successfully install by hand. Once you feel that you have deleted enough .deb files (one way or another), give dselect another shot at it. dselect will know which packages were installed with dpkg and will not try to download them again. I think libg++ is obsolete. If you have the replacement (libstdc++ or something I think) you may not need libg++. I wish you luck. --David EXT2 TOOLS == Version 1.1 - 9 January 1996 CHANGES SINCE VERSION 1.0 - E2LS now supports wildcards. A bug relating to handling disks with more than 2 partitions within an extended partion has been corrected. The need to customize E2CD for 4DOS has been removed. INTRODUCTION The ext2 tools are a set of programs that enable you to read a Linux ext2 file system under DOS. The ext2 tools consist of the following programs: E2CAT analogous to the Linux cat command E2CD analogous to the Linux cd command E2CP analogous to the Linux cp command E2LS analogous to the Linux ls command E2PARTlists hard disk partitions E2PWD analogous to the Linux pwd command All these programs have been compiled with GCC and require the GO32 DOS extender in order to execute. There are currently no programs for writing to an ext2 file system and probably never will be unless someone else would care to make them. The programs are distributed in both binary and source code form. COPYRIGHT - The ext2 tools are copyright (C) 1995 Claus Tondering ([EMAIL PROTECTED]). Note: The ext2fs routines are copyright (C) 1993, 1994 Theodore Ts'o. For further copyrights, see the source code files. The ext2 tools may be redistributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License, which is included in the file called COPYING. For your convenience the GO32 program has been included in this distribution. It is part of the DJGPP distribution, which can be obtained by anonymous FTP from oak.oakland.edu in the directory /SimTel/vendors/djgpp. DISCLAIMER -- This is free software. Use it at your own risk. If it doesn't work, it's your problem, not mine. BASIC PRINCIPLES Before you use the ext2 tools, you must set the environment variable E2CWD using a statement similar to the following: SET E2CWD=129:5 or SET E2CWD=129:5:234 The three numbers after the equals sign are interpreted thus: The first number (129 in the above example) identifies the physical disk on which the ext2 file system is located. The number is used as the second parameter to the DOS biosdisk() routine (BIOS interrupt 0x13). Typical values are: 0 for A: disk 1 for B: disk 128 for first hard disk 129 for second hard disk (See the 'BUGS' section at the end of this document for information about using a third hard disk.) The second number (5 in the above example) is the number of the disk partition on which the ext2 file system is located. This number is typically part of the Linux file name for the disk device. If, for example, you are used to referring to the disk as /dev/hdb5 under Linux, the partition number is 5. The E2PART program can help you identify the partitions. The third number is the inode number of the directory that is to be your current working directory. If this number is omitted, 2 (the root inode number) is used. If you don't know what an inode is, don't worry. Just omit the final number from E2CWD. Note: File names starting with / will be interpreted relative to the root directory on the particular disk identified by the E2CWD environment variable. Only E2LS supports wildcards. Be sure to have the GO32.EXE program somewhere in your PATH. E2CAT - SYNOPSIS E2CAT [-bt] pathname DESCTIPTION The E2CAT program will copy the contents of the file identified by ext2 pathname to the standard output. The following options are available: -b Binary mode. No translation performed. -t Text mode (default). LF translated to CR/LF. E2CD SYNOPSIS E2CD pathname DESCRIPTION The pathname must identify an ext2 directory. That directory is made the current working directory. NOTE E2CD is a .BAT file that creates another .BAT file (called

How dynamic is the ip? What I'm getting at is that it takes time to have a hostname propogate through the internet (sometimes up to a week). So if you get this working, and if you're changing ip's every day then some computers on the other side of the world may still point to an ip that has already changed 5-7 times already. What I did was run the smailconfig program and chose option 2. This allows you to specify the smarthost where all non-local mail is to be transmitted. When asked for a smarthost I gave the SMTP server that I get from my ISP. That's what I have at home - is this what you are looking for? Is this even the right way to go about it? The version I have is Smail-3.2.0.92 1997-Feb-9 #2. (from sendmail -V) jmb Dear Linux users, How do you configure a host that has to send mail through a mail gateway ? Perhaps the registers for the secondary IDE bus are sufficiently different from the norm that a special driver is needed. If you don't know what keymap is loaded on you system, you can dump the current one with dumpkeys(1). - You can dump the Linux console terminfo entry with infocmp(1). The terminfo(5) man page describes the capability codes. - In the shell, you can enter ^V followed by the key in question, which will insert the literal escape sequence produced by the key in the command line buffer. ie, what is sent when F5 is pressed? \033[[5, which is a Linuxism. SecureCRT has VT_PFx codes, but the're only the first four F keys... F5 through F10 don't work. I assume SecureCRT, whatever that is, emulates a DEC VT100 terminal. The VT100 had only four function keys, named PF1 to PF4. (The Linux console tries, within the limits set by the PC hardware, to emulate a DEC VT220 terminal, which is itself a superset of the VT100. Due to some substantial differences in the layout of the MF2 keyboard compared to a DEC LK201, there are some incongruencies regarding the function/special/keypad keys.) Also, what terminal setting works best w/ Linux (and what is the difference)? I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to ask. If you use the Linux console as terminal, obviously TERM=linux is correct. When I choose select Access method of ftp in the dselect program, I answer the directory information questions (maybe this might be my problem, I may have the wrong directory information--is it /pub/debian, dists/unstable/main, dists/unstable/contrib?). After answering the final question, the message returns the error message: Failed to connect. Retry connection at once[y]: This is followed by another error message: FTP error-error at /usr/lib/per15/Debian/dpkgftp.pm line 81, STDIN chunk10 query/setup script returned error exit status1. Press return to continue. Also, I am unsure of the question, Enter Debian directory. Do I setup my own directory on my hard drive or do I re-enter the site of the packages? Any other tips on installing from the ftp site would be helpful. Thanks, Brian [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- Unsubscribe? mail -s unsubscribe [EMAIL PROTECTED] /dev/null

Re: FTP Installation Problem
I appreciate your help. Quite welcome. I'm going to be leaving the lab for the day in a few minutes, but I'll help if I can tomorrow. I did run pon first and listened to it dial-up. Did it connect successfully? Were you able to telnet or ping or anything? (I realize this seems silly, but sometimes it's the connection that's wacky). If so, then the problem really is a dselect or dpkg one rather than a ppp one. I printed the url pages to obtain the directories. Ok, then you've probably got them right. Let's see -- this is what I remember offhand of the questions dselect and its ftp method usually ask: site: (I use llug.sep.bnl.gov, but you might use ftp.debian.org or something) debian directory: (for me, /debian ...) distribution to get: hamm/hamm hamm/non-free hamm/contrib (this'll get the main, non-free and contrib dists for hamm) use a proxy: n login: ftp password: [EMAIL PROTECTED]/org/edu good luck... Re: Driver bug? 56k USR doesn't transmit properly?
Isn't a Baud_base of 115200 too small for a 56k speed ? Shouldn't it be 23something (231400 ?) for that speed ? don't they say that the modem-computer rate should be at least 4 times then line speed ? The changes made no difference. Thanks for the suggestions, though. Last thing I can think of is whether the serial driver is setting up the cua1/ttyS1 file correctly. Following is output from setserial (I'd already reset the speed to vhi from normal): /dev/ttyS1, Line 1, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x02f8, IRQ: 3 Baud_base: 115200, close_delay: 50, divisor: 0 closing_wait: 3000, closing_wait2: infinte Flags: spd_vhi skip_test session_lockout Can anyone tell whether there's anything odd about this w.r.t. a 56k modem connected as follows: CONNECT 41333/ARQ/x2/LAPM/V42BIS ??? -- Unsubscribe? mail -s unsubscribe [EMAIL PROTECTED] /dev/null
Re: modem works now - but modem-computer comunication really slow
If i understand correctly, one of your problems is that it is very slow. 1) Is it a plug-and-play modem ? 2) what does setserial (setserial /dev/ttyS3 -a) reports ? 3) Perhaps you should consider giving a more specific modem initialization string, rather then ATZ ? 4) I think you should read the PPP HOWTO. It is a bit different from the way Debian handels the connection but, never the less, I find it an invaluable source to start things going (and also get a little insight). I also saw on this list that there are instructions on the automatic FAQ (FAQ'O'MATIC ?), although I did not used it. I am trying to connect a zoltrix 33600 modem to a hamm machine. The modem is an internal modem running on ttyS3 I managed to get the modem dialing, only the comunication is really slow. It takes 20-30 seconds to get the OK answear from the init string (ATZ). Then the modem dials (minicom also takes the dial command real slow). It then connects to the provider (used minicom and also checkes with plog using pon). The inoput comes at about 30 seconds for half a line to load. I get the login and password promts (only using minicom - pon hangs up before they apear) and after connecting the modem hangs up in the middle of the coming from the provider to start ppp connection. -- Unsubscribe? mail -s unsubscribe [EMAIL PROTECTED] /dev/null
libc6 upgrade crash my machine!!!!!
After running dselect and trying to upgrade all my old hamm packages including libc6, nothing works now it seems the libc6 package is corrupted or something, i've tried to mount the file system and run dpkg -i --root=/mnt --admindir=/mnt/var/lib libc6xxx.deb but it complains about preinstall and postinstall scripts ( -- not found --). Do you have heatsink grease between the heatsink and the cpu? If not the cpu can overheat while the heatsink remains cool. -- John Hasler [EMAIL PROTECTED] (John Hasler) Dancing Horse Hill Elmwood, WI -- Unsubscribe? mail -s unsubscribe [EMAIL PROTECTED] /dev/null
