Re: "idled" the thing that wouldn't die
As the other reply said, daemons are in /etc/init.d. You can do stuff /etc/init.d/daemon (stop|start|restart|reload) or whatever it supports. If a package failed to remove its functionality when you removed it, please file a bug. Install the bug package (apt-get install bug) and see the man page for it, makes things alot simpler. I believe you will need to do a complete install of the slink X11. You might need to forcibly remove all hamm X11 packages before installing slink's X11 stuff. In slink, X11 is broken down into ~12 packages, some like xbase and xfonts-base are obvious, others like xdm and xprt aren't so obvious. The version number in slink for these files is 3.3.2.3a-8. So when you upgrade using dselect take a look at every file, in the x11 sections, with the above version and read its description to determine whether you need it or not. -- Ed C.

If I am right a firewall is not needed by an ISP > because the clients both send and receive requests and information and so > the servers have to sit outside of any firewall anyway ??? You're _VERY_ wrong. You _absolutely_ need a firewall First to protect your customers : you don't want someone using Back Orifice to control from the Internet the computer of your customers. Then to protect yourself: you have to block for example external (ie from Internet) telnet access to your computers, etc... In fact it's better to use a 'deny all; allow some' politic. Deny all trafic then carefully enable some of it. For example: allow web access from anywhere to web server (and not to anywhere else) etc... You should also be a 'politically' correct ISP : your firewall has to insure that all packets you're sending are really using IP from your network (to prevent IP spoofing from your part) and you should discard all packets coming from Internet with IP like 10.* or 192.168.* (see RFCs for details), that is private IPs which should not be relayed. > I assume that to handle 15 incoming lines I need 15 modems (and 30 lines > requires 30 modems etc). How do I connect these 15 modems to the LAN ? Do yes. you have many solutions. one of them is to buy a cyclade card, you put it in a computer with linux and then you can plug in it 8 modems for example, and as far (use version 2.0.36 it's better) linux have now 8 new serial ports. in that case you use pppd, authentication done by standard unix ways (/etc/passwd and friends) linux is then doing the routing and everything. as far as everything goes the customer at the other end of the modem has an IP (statically or dinamically assigned, both are possible) and is directly connected to the net. > I need 3 machines each with 5 serial ports ? speaking of unofficial lyx . . .
there is a mailmerge package available. I think that it's somewhere as a contrib package on the site, but I'd have to look. If that fails & you need it (or want to code more of it :), I can send the most recent version. It's not done, and a couple of the options don't work yet (seems to me that separating by a paragraph marker is one of them), but it worked well enough to send out 200 job applications :) And it's done in the text-based way of the 80's word processors, rather than the brain-dead way word & staroffice do it. --

_very_ reproducable WP8 X client lib error.
I am having a reproducable problem with WP*. It must be a clinet side library problem, since it ccurs even on remote X servers. If you go to "Format", and select "Labels" then select a label, and press "OK" WP says an X server error has occured. "Popushell must have a non NULL parent". I have upgraded to xlib6-3.3.2.a-8 from frozen, and it still persists. I know I got a good download, because I have installe from the same tarball on a FreBSD machine, and runing it under Linux emulation there does not reproduce the bug. This bug is 100% reproducable. more on the remote access server
Thanks for the help. Perhaps you would be able to help with some other matters ? The background is that I and some friends intend to purchase a permanent connection to the 'net - somewhere between 128K & 512K depending on how much money we can come up with - and I will set up a dial-in system at my house (and therefore have the benefit of the full speed of the connection !) for the others to use. So as to gain as much experience and knowledge as I can I want to set up the home system so that it emulates a major ISP as closely as possible. I have 3 486 machines and 1 pentium 133 and 1 pentium 200. As I understand it, a major ISP has on seperate machines proxy server (squid), web server (apache), news server (slrn/inn ?), mail server (sendmail), IP allocation (DHCP). No firewall is required because no user will have a shell account and no machine on my LAN will have any information of any value. If I am right a firewall is not needed by an ISP because the clients both send and receive requests and information and so the servers have to sit outside of any firewall anyway ??? The problem I have and which I was asking about (indirectly) in the last post is that obviously I require both the permanent 'net connection and the 15 incoming lines to be connected to this network. I think that I can connect an ISDN card in the proxy server machine directly to the permanent connection and so give the whole LAN permanent access. If that is so then that is easy ! I assume that to handle 15 incoming lines I need 15 modems (and 30 lines requires 30 modems etc). How do I connect these 15 modems to the LAN ? Do I need 3 machines each with 5 serial ports ? I understood that something like the cisco 1603 ISDN router has 'x' number of serial ports that the modems plug into and a 10baseT connection to plug into the LAN. The router is then in charge of directing traffic back to the requesting client. But if this is the case, who verifies the logins, assigns IP numbers and initiates the ppp connection to the dial-in client ? As the 1603 router is fairly expensive, I am trying to find a way around that. Also, the information on the telco's page implied that a remote access server was used in place of 'x' number of modems and was cheaper and easier than that many modems as well. Have you any knowledge on this ? If more computers are needed they are fairly cheap second hand so please make whatever suggestion you think is appropriate. I hope the above is clear. I sincerely appreciate your time in answering my last mail and in reading this. Ivan.

Re: Installation on a separate hard drive
If you did want to use the same drive with Windows, you would need to create a partition with FIPS or a similar partition making program. You would then create a Linux partition and install there. Many people do this and this is no problem, except when they need more space, which will always happen. A separate drive for Linux is, although not necessary, always nice. remote access server
Hello again ! Am I right in thinking that a remote access server simply takes the place of a million modems for a dial-in setup ? Re: Triple click: changing click interval: SOLVED
The parameter that can be changed is the "maximum click interval". This can be changed with xterm -mc 500 for 500 milliseconds. I believe the default is 250 milliseconds. This gives me time to make another click if all three clicks haven't been recognized. My problem probably did not demand a "minimum click interval" and I presume Linux recognizes a very small interval between clicks. My mouse probably isn't sending every click, so I need time (from "-mc 500") to send another click; perhaps I am not clicking my mouse properly. The corresponding X-resource is multiclickTime Przemek Klosowski brought up another characteristic of triple clicks. They include a "newline" that you usually do not want. To exclude a "newline" on triple clicks, use xterm -cn or use the X-resource cutNewline I usually make my options explicit in .xsession or an alias. I currently use the following long list of options. xterm -cr red -j -si -sk -mc 500 -cn -sb -sl 500 -bg wheat -geom 128x43+0+0 -xrm xterm.vt100.pointerColor:blue -xrm xterm.vt100.pointerColorBackground:yellow -xrm xterm.vt100.pointerShape:gumby & Here, I have found that the sroll length "-sl 500" should be less than 1500 or xterm starts to use much more memory. The "gumby" really is a gumby pointer, with pointy head and all. I prefer gumby because, unlike the "I" beam, since only his finger points to a character, he does not interfere with reading a character or word on a line of interest. How did I finally find this solution? Mostly, I needed somewhat unique keywords. "mouse" was too general, while "click" was fairly specific. "triple click" was more specific. Since mail-list, news-list, and HOWTO lists turned up no answers, I tried some package searches, dpkg -L xbase |xargs zgrep -i click |less The "-L" lists all the files in the debian package "xbase". "xargs" puts pipe arguments after your following command and arguments -- this is one of the niftyest tools in Linux, one I only found a year ago. The "less" pipe works nicely when control characters get printed, so your screen needn't be reset. -- Jim Burt, NJ9L, Fairfax, Virginia, USA [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.mnsinc.com/jameson [EMAIL PROTECTED] (703) 235-5213 ext. 132 (work) "A poor man associating with a rich man will soon be too poor to buy even a pair of breeches." --Chinese Proverb
emacs19, hamm and segmentation faults
Hello. On Sunday, I finally upgraded my home system from bo to hamm (I've been postponing the upgrade because I had a lot of important work to finish, and I didn't want to risk breaking the system until that was done). I used apt-get and the official Debian CD (it came with the new edition of the Debian book). There were small problems here and there, but nothing more than I expected, and all the diagnostics I ran (apt-get check especially) gave (and give) no indication of trouble. There is one big problem though---trying to invoke emacs (19.34) always produces a segmentation fault (all users, from the console or from within X). Just about my whole work-life happens from inside emacs, so this is, for me, dead serious. The problem is unique to emacs as far as I've been able to tell so far; no other program I've tried gives rise to any problem. I suppose I could remove and then reinstall it, or try upgrading to emacs20 (or switching to xemacs). I'd rather not though, and I'm scared that the problem might be an indication of some deeper problem with memory allocation or something. Any advice? Thank you very much, Jim McCloskey

Can't send mail from my machine:
The following attempt to contact the outside world fails: mail -s test [EMAIL PROTECTED] < /dev/null I immediately receive a message that includes the following error: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ... transport smtp: 553 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>...unresolvable; rejected. Check your DNS All attempts to get any mail off my machine fail with similar errors. I called my ISP, and they offered some excuse that "Linux is designed as a server environment, and it doesn't like routing mail through another machine." They suggested I either switch to Windows or Macintosh, or send all mail by first telnetting into their network, then using my shell account to send mail. The latter is the technique I used to send this posting. I'm using smail on a hamm system, and getting a ppp connection to my ISP. I used to be able to send mail from my machine, and I think I haven't changed any smail configs since then. How do tell smail to route mail through my ISP? /etc/smail/routers is only smart_host: driver=smarthost, transport=smtp; and /etc/smail/config attempts to indicate that mail should be routed through my ISP (netnet.net) via the following line: smart_path=netnet.net Thanks, Matt Miller - "Small is beautiful." -- Mark Gancarz, "The Unix Philosophy"
Matrox Xserver (again) and XFree86 3.3.3.3
First off, I really appreciate everyone's response to my earlier post on the Matrox Xserver. Of course, now that I have the card installed, I can no longer find the Xserver on SuSE's website. All I can find is a message saying that the Matrox server is now included in the SVGA server in XFree86 3.3.3.3, which is cool, except there are no debs for XFree86 3.3.3.3 and I'm not about to stick an X tarball on a debian system and then try unkludge everything when the deb does come out. So, anyone know where I can find the Matrox Xserver/XF86Config file now -- or if I even still can -- and anyone have any idea when XFree86 3.3.3.3 will be available in a deb?

That wasn't a typo. I went back in and tried "netscape &" I got the same message: command not found. Thanks, Kent "John C. Anyone have a good spredsheet icon?
I am setting up a remote machine to use my Debian bx as an application server for office apps, for my wife. Using siag as my spreadsheet. Anyone have a good icon for a spreadsheet? Acroread & Hamm ???
Does Acroread work with hamm? It tells me it can't find libXt.so.6. If I set my LD_LIBRARY_PATH I get a SEGV. I do have libc5 installed. Thanks in advance, Wayne
Re: X library question.
xlib6 is for libc5 clients, xlib6g is for xlib6 clients. The problem went away for me after I upgraded to slink, which has xlib6 3.3.2a-8. The X error I had previously was with hamm and xlib6 3.3.2.3-2, but it is different than the error you report: X Error of failed request: BadAccess (attempt to access private resource denied) Major Opcode of failed request: 28 (X_GrabButton) Serial number of failed request: 2296 Current serial number in output stream: 2297 Bob On Sun, 27 Dec 1998, Stan Brown wrote: > I am trying to track down why WP8dies with X errors on my machine, but > not, acording to the single report I got, on all Debian hamm machines. > > I have, acording to dpkg -l a package called xlib6 3.3.2.3-2 installed. > The person with the succcess story has xlib6 3.3.2.2-4 installed. > First the description of these packages calls them libc5 X clients. X library question.
I am trying to track down why WP8dies with X errors on my machine, but not, acording to the single report I got, on all Debian hamm machines. I have, acording to dpkg -l a package called xlib6 3.3.2.3-2 installed. The person with the succcess story has xlib6 3.3.2.2-4 installed. First the description of these packages calls them libc5 X clients. Is this right? Second is it possible that a new bug has crept in? The error I am getting is "PopuShell must have a non-NULL parent" Any ides here would be appreciated. File download problem
Hi, I was downloading the Communicator file once again. I tried another installation and came very close this time. Anyway I decided to remove all the previous Communicator files I had downloaded and see if a fresh one would work. I used "rm" to take out a communicator directory and all the files. I used "updatedb" and "locate communicator" and didn't find anything. My problem is when I finished downloading the Communicator file with Lynx the selection "save to disk" came up; I selected that and when I did, got the message, "Alert!: Cannot write to file" then it said to "enter a new file name" which I tried but it just kept saying "Alert!:..." So what have I done now? Why can't I save the file to disk? Thanks, Kent
sound in netscape
Hi, I am trying to put sound in netscape 4.5. Apparently the debian package doesn't install the sound interfaces (plugins?), or does it? I tried to install the ump plugin for midi files, but when I start netscape it says ERROR: /usr/lib/netscape/plugins/ump.so: undefined symbol: fstat Cant load plugin /usr/lib/netscape/plugins/ump.so. Ignored. Any ideas? Do I really have to install a plugin for each kind of sound file? Are there debian packages for that (I have a SB 16)? Thanks in advance, Marko PS. Please email me back, I can't read Debian Mailing lists archives. My netscape 4.5 hangs after loading 200K of a html page. Have you had this problem also?
Re: spreadsheet
Stan, I'm not a big user of spreadsheets but I have looked at Siag which seems to be quite effective. IIRC functionality can be extended through scripting (as in Excel) although the scripting language is not built in. I think Perl is the language (but don't quote me on that :) Also from what I see on the list here, StarOffice has a spreadsheet as part of its package but I've no idea how good that is - I would expect that it would be very good as it is part of a commercial suite but then again ... If neither of those suit you then there is another office suite around somewhere called, I think, Andrew. This also has a spreadsheet. Good luck ! Ivan.
