But, this logic doesn't apply to the Hauppauge cards. They use the BT848
chipset which was the first chipset supported under Linux using the bttv
driver.

I'm using a pre-XFree release of newer SiS X-Server.
I downloaded it from SuSE at late October (It was dated Oct 5 or so) from SuSE,
but
it looks to be removed, so I think it must be already added on XFree distro.
BTW, the 6326 support is not complete, all hardware functions just give image
corruption, but it is better than nothing, and I'm using it
on my PII-266 with 16bpp and works fine enough.

This is incorrect. Those cards use the BT848 chipset, which is
explicitly supported by Video4Linux.

I think you should put

alias lynx="lynx -cfg=$HOME/.lynxrc", rather than using ~.

On tcsh, you need a space instead of equals, if that's what you're using.

BINGO! Thanks Mark. I had actually seen Christopher Browne's

Just because it works with Windows doesnt guarantee it's work with Linux.
It's a WinTV card. Basicly, logic suggests it's a Win-hardware, and
therefor you can not use it with Linux.

I've got a Hauppauge WinTV card now working under Debian with kernel
2.2.1. I can't give details now because I'm at work (different machine).
The trick was to get the correct hardware addressing so both sound and
video would work. I got the correct settings from an old archived email on
this list. I compiled the kernel with the appropriate video4linux support
for my card, and then I custom compiled a recent version of xawtv. The
Debian package appears to be broken. Anyway, using xawtv, I can watch TV
in a window. It works. It's cool. No more need to reboot to Windows since
I've decided to stop using Quicken.

Thanks. Syrus.

I've noticed in the newer kernels there is now support for TV tuners
and FM tuner

I have one windows machine at home among many which I'm trying to

it's a TV/Radio tuner which works under all the winblows versions

I have not seen any docs on this card for linux

does anyone know if it's possible to use this under linux?

has anyone actualy attempted this?

System time is broken

1999-04-01 Thread Dave Swegen
Ever since we went over to summer time here in the UK my system has been
broken. It started with the extra hour not being added after the change. I
then tried to correct it using the date command, and have then tried the
hwclock command (which worked). My problem is that whenever I use standby
on my machine the kernel time isn't updated, which it used to (it was a
standard hamm setup).

I would really appreciate it if someone could help me get out of this mess.
Any help much appreciated.

Btw, I read the clock mini-HOWTO, but it only works as long as I don't
standby the system. Also, I seem to recall there was a thread here about
how to set clocks, but I couldn't find anything in the mailing list
archives, so any pointers would be useful.

Cheers
Dave

But if there is a failure in the Packages.gz (or were is the problem?)

Why dont you post error messages to the list?
Chances are, it will say that no valid modes are found (at least there
are ways that can work to go around that. I have a more/less readable

to be sure, post them here, and we'll see what we can do.

When I installed the debs, I am sure I saw a message that stated I had

I will try going without KDEDIR and see what happens.

PS- on second thought, perhaps the message only said I should add KDEDIR to my

I have the same version of ldso on a slink machine and it IS there. I
don't think there is any reason to file a bug report. I don't know what

The only problem here is that you have KDEDIR set. It should not be set
at all. I've been using the KDE 1.1 debs for quite a while (since they
were released) and I've had no problems...

You machine hasn't enough RAM for the normal slackware installation. You
should read the docs concerning lowmem installation but I don't know if
combining MCA, lowmem and only one floppy is manageable...
BTW, I had no problem with ESDI drives but it was not on an MCA machine.
On a PS/2 machine your drive is probably /dev/eda instead of /dev/hda.

Bob, I installed the version 1.9.10-1 that comes with the Official CD
number 1 of version 2.1 (slink)
Thinking of an error of the packager I tried the one that comes with

Fortunately I had a pc which was not upgraded yet so I simply ftp'ed

Help Installing Linux

1999-04-01 Thread Bala Iyer
Further to the advise of 30th March to check whether the file "linux" via
Netscape came with extension ".htm" and to save it as only Linux and not
Linux.htm. I tried to do that but could not achieve that. So I tried to
download the file (by keeping the shift key down while downloading) again and
it keeps coming with the extension "htm". I also tried with IE0.5 to download
without any success. In the Debian instructions Ch.5 (5.2) it says that some
browser may need to take special action to download directly to a file, in raw
binary mode and gives for Netscape to hold the shift key while downloading.
Can any one let me know if there are any such instruction for IE's?

Thanks again for any help.

Bala.

Read the manpage for fcsk. You will need to force fcsk to check the drive
I think you need to use -f (force to check) and/or -c . Run e2fsck as root

Enlightenment .15 required debs

1999-04-01 Thread Sean M Maguire
I am trying to install the enlightenment 0.15 package, obtained from
www.debian.org via a link from the Enlightenment download page.

The package for Enlightenment requires that I have imlib1 >= 1.9.4 installed,
but I am unable to find this package anywhere. Unstable only offers 1.9.3-4.
I tried to make a package from Enlightenment's rpm at their site using alien,
but I got an imlib package, which I am sure would be rejected by dpkg for not
being imlib1.

I have not tried forcing the install, as that seems potentially problematic.

Is there a package for this, or do I need to make one via a more particular
method of making my own package?

Hmmm, I think you mean proprietary,
since OSS and commercial are not mutually exclusive.

So the scenario is that some proprietary, closed source, program is what
you want, and that it has been built with RH in mind. To be forced into
dual booting RH to run it would mean that the software relies on a
specific kernel version (poorly programmed or incompatibilities between
kernel versions, neither of which is related to the
commercial-proprietary / free-OSS issue), one that your Debian system
isn't running; anything else could be handled by having the correct
libraries on the system. The only stumbling block I can see is if RH
starts using proprietary libs, and the software you want depends on
them. Ok, there would be a delay until the OSS community comes up with
replacements. The only reason I can think of that would result in
"software that we can't get from the OSS community", would be patents
associated with libs only distributed with (lets keep picking on) RH.
So...

The questions indicate that there is a demand, which should result in
more developer interest in providing support for MS Word documents

Help! I can't even login!

Hi,

I have a debian system installed on my box, and it has been working fine
for the past 6 months or so. Yesterday, I decided it was time to update my
packages, so I ran dselect, it downloaded about 100Mb of stuff, and
started installing them. Everything went fine, until it started displaying
repeatedly "libncurses.so.4: no such file or dir..". At that point, the
whole system began to behave strangely, so I decided to reboot (bad idea!)
Now, the boot stops at some point displaying that same error, and altough
it shows the login prompt, it says something like "unable to change
tty..." when I try to login.

Any ideas?

1999-04-01 Thread Bob Nielsen
Both libc5 and libc6 have a libXt.so.6.

/usr/X11R6/lib/libXt.so.6 is libc6. The libc5 version is in
/usr/lib/libc5-compat/libXt.so.6. If you don't have this, install
xlib6 (and possibly libc5 and xpm4.7).

If you are running a Debian version <2.0, the above doesn't apply.

As an example of how much control over websites the evil empire actually

I think depending both on libc5 and libc6 shouldn't be a healthy
situation. This one seems to be a libc5 program depending on svgalib,
but maybe you haven't installed the libc5-compatible svgalib libraries
(package 'svgalib1' in section 'oldlibs') so your program tries to use
the libc6 ones, resulting in this conflict.

I haven't tried 'emusic' so I have no idea why nothing happens, but the
SIGINT is due to the ^C itself (in general, pressing ^C sends a SIGINT
to the process on the corresponding terminal).

Interesting, but it doesn't address Mark's problem. It also requires that

There is no reason why they should. Pppd locks the serial port.

thanks for your reply, I think that the problem with the clock is somehow
related with the BIOS-APM. I remember somewhere I read about not to use
the APM features offered by the BIOS, and I hae been using them to my
convenience. I think the clock stops when I use the suspend switch and
then resume when I start back. So I guess I'll have to rebuild my kernel
with APM features compiled in. I hope this will work.

I feel your pain. I have been trying, unsuccessfully, to get StarOffice to
work on my machine with an S3 card, with no success. It doesn't just crash
when I read mail; usually if I have it on for about five minutes, it will
freeze and won't boot up again. (It also then causes problems when I try
to unmount my filesystem.) The environment variable fix doesn't work,
and the patch on their Web site seems to be obsolete. My roommate has no
problems with it, so I assume it's my machine. I notified Star Division
tech support via phone and they said they'd get back to me about it, so
I'll report back if and when they do.

I can't speak to the usability of your script, but I do know that if your
father is
running Windows, that still might cause problems. When I was dialing up from a
Windows PC (before I was into Linux), anytime someone would pick up another
phone
even for a second, it would kill my connection. Dialing up from Linux I've
actually
survived not only a phone pick-up, but a partial number dialing.

Your modem should drop the connection when it fails to get dialtone. It is
either defective or misconfigured. Try changing your modem initialization

His father is using a modem, not talking. It is possible that the modem is
so badly designed that it mistakes the carrier for dial tone.

This depends very much on the particular modem. The one I have now is
pretty much immune to my wife picking up the phone, but my previous one

I have the following alias in my .bash_aliases because on hamm and on a
grey scale monitor I could not see lynx's cursor.

alias lynx="lynx -show_cursor"

So you can put

alias lynx="lynx -cfg=~/.lynxrc"

At your local Radio Shack, along with the LED line-in-use indicator, they also
have a device that will disable your phone jack if another extension is in
use. You could get two of them, one for you, one for your father, and then no
one would be cutting off the other's dial in connection.

How practical is it to network your computer with your dad's, and then do

I'm wanting to start mirror Debian here (Rio de Janeiro - Brazil) since
I have installed 10 box of Debian Linux around UFRJ campus. :)
Anyone have the steps to use rsync (the best solution to mirror) or some
conf file.

Problem: NFSROOT with netboot and 2.2.x

1999-04-01 Thread Michael Maechtel
whenever i try to boot a 2.2.x kernel with netboot
everything goes all-right until it starts to mount nfs.

At this point I get on my client:

Looking up port of RPC 13/2 on 192.168.1.1
portmap: server 192.168.1.1 not responding timed out
Root-NFS: Unable to get nfsd port number from server, using default

Looking up port of RPC 15/1 on 192.168.1.1
portmap: server 192.168.1.1 not responding timed out
Root-NFS: Unable to get mountd port number from server, using default
mount: server 192.168.1.1 not responding, timed out
ROOT-NFS: Server returned error -5 while mounting x
VFS: Unable to mount root fs via NFS

BUT, from time to time it works (maybe once in 10 times)
Very strange
No problems at all with 2.0.x kernels.

On my Debian system I use:

Client:
- Debian slink with Kernel 2.2.5
- netboot 0.8.1

Server:
- Debian slink with Kernel 2.2.5
- nfsd (2.2beta37) or knfsd (1.2) , which makes no difference

Any ideas?

Mike

The maintainer appears to be Martin Schultze <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>. There are
no bugs reported for this package which is impressive. I expected a
please update to upstream release or something. The only thought I have
is that raidtools has been replaced by another program or perhaps in the
kernel. I claim no more knowledge on the subject, so you may want to send
a polite request to Martin.

I don't know if this will help or not but I just set up X with 800x600
only and had the problem of programs falling off the screen. I went
back and added 640x480 and 1024x768, in addition to 800x600, that
cleared up the problem.

You don't need to rebuild your kernel; there's nothing wrong with it. The
memory that shows up as "in use" is being used by the kernel to cache
things such as disk accesses. It is available for any program that needs
it, though. The kernel will simply re-adjust its caches so it can
allocate memory to other programs that need it.

I doubt it. Remember, Linux is used extensively in server environments
where it is left on for weeks or months at a time. It would be
unacceptable if the clock didn't keep accurate time on these machines.
How far off is your clock getting?

If you're on a network, you can run xntp to synchronize you clock with
xntp servers over the network. This will keep your clock accurate to
within a few milliseconds or something. The list of public xntp servers
is installed with the xntp package.

Re: Screen resolution

1999-04-01 Thread Andrei Ivanov
Why don't you just increase the resolution?
640x480 is awfully small. I'm able to get 1024x768 out of my monitor (My
S3 DX/Virge can do better, but monitor is stopping me), and I am already
out of space on one screen. But switching between virtual portions of a
desktop could be not very convinient.
So...change the resolution. If you can get 1024x768 in windows, you should
be able to get at least 800x600 in Linux, if not better. Just rerun
xf86config.

Re: Script to check whether modem telephone line in use --- how?

1999-04-01 Thread John Leget
Simple solution, we have another phone downstairs ( i camp with the pc and
modem
upstairs).
I bought myself a "privacy" adapter which is basically a phone splitter wich
disables
textension "A" if "B" is in use ( and vice versa), thus i do not get
disconnected
when they pick the phone up downstairs (Ahummm, well only until im told to get
off
the line that is ).
Should solve your problem it works great only allows one line to be active,
also has
a led on each :).

OK, but then the user should be prepared to pay for it!

And often people in the USA seems to forget that there are other
people in other countries that have to pay very much for the telephone
connection like me here in germany. If someone sends me a big
attachment (i get it via UUCP, so i don't see how big it is before
it's on my system) i always feel a big wish to go to that person and
take the money for the download from him.

I'm not sure about this, but you might have virus varning enabled, check
your bios, if you have somthing like viruswarning enabled you better
disable that.

I had that enabled once when I installed win95, and it stoped, I thougt
that was normal for win95, so I tried 4 times before I checked the bios.

The virus warning is a real bad thing. You cant have a bootmanger that
changes the active partion, like bootmanager from IBM.

Well, I hope it works out for you.

the us mirrors are told to have some problems now, which are being
addressed. If you intend to frequently mirror the entire kernel.org
site, you'd better use rsync and maybe become yourself part of the
official mirror sites. More about this on the mailing list

I've found this in my mailbox today:

gusp.infogroup.it : Apr  1 10:10:10 : root : preposterous stampfile date;
TTY=tty12 ; PWD=/home/jnos ; USER=jnos ; COMMAND=/home/jnos/jnos -f

What does it mean?
What package does generate it?

User jnos is a fictitious user for the amateur radio program "jnos",
which is run by root from inittab.

Presumably you need ATH1 to go off hook. The modem speaker is not
active otherwise.

This is a modem issue. When confronted by so much whistling and warbling,
it probably doesn't know what to think. I guess that enough signal
emerging from a particular spectrum filter is enough to convince it of
a dial tone. After all, a (quite common) initial triple ringing tone
before the familiar double one (in the UK) is enough to make mine
think that the other end is busy, and there's nothing the software can
do about it.

Just a thought, but over here, a second line is quite cheap.

Make a script called /usr/local/bin/lynx, which just says

#!/bin/sh
/usr/bin/lynx -cfg=$HOME/.lynxrc

Edit /etc/profile to have /usr/local/bin first; my /etc/profile says:

You could alias lynx to "/usr/bin/lynx -cfg=$HOME/.lynxrc" in .bash_profile.
It might be better to rename lynx and create a wrapper script which adds
this option. Perhaps you could add the wrapper script in /usr/local/bin
and put that before /usr/bin in the users' path?

I'm curious: what's the advantage of per-user lynx configuration files?

You might want to look into the 'connect' program from
'http://www.caesium.fr/freeware/connect/'. It tracks multiple connect
attempts so none trample over each other. I have been using it for
several months now.

Kensington Scroll Mouse

1999-04-01 Thread Shawn Nguyen
Hi,

I've got a kensington scroll mouse and was wondering if there's anyway
to get it to work at all in X? If not, is there a mouse out there that
I could buy which would let me use that feature on it in X? I guess I
am too used to using the scroll mouse and I find it a little more than
irksome to keep having to manually scroll through web pages and such. I
guess my laziness has got the better of me. Thanks for any advice at
all.

Shawn

I see, but even if I create a /etc/skel/.lynxrc file and then a new user,
lynx won't even try to read the new user's ~/.lynxrc, but /etc/lynx.cfg.
I did create a ~/.lynxrc from /etc/lynx.cfg (and even removed the latest),
but lynx does default to /etc ...

P.S. `lynx -cfg=~/.lynxrc' on the command line works fine, how can I add
that to the .bash_profile?

Regards,

Horacio.

Already thought of that, but hoped for a more "standard" solution. I wonder
if I remove /etc/lynx.cfg lynx will look for ~/.lynxrc or ~/lynx.cfg ...

Configuration file /etc/lynx.cfg is not available.

Well, it didn't work. Can I state in the user's .bash_profile to look for
~/.lynxrc instead of the default /etc/lynx.cfg somehow?

Horacio.

[Fwd: star office]

1999-04-01 Thread Shawn Nguyen
 --- Begin Message ---
I just have a question. I used the SVGA server but X frozed on me. Do
I have to set that line down below in order for it to not freeze? The
weird thing is that when I use the S3 server it doesn't freeze X, it
only freezes StarOffice. So I went back to my S3 server. Also, I
discovered that using the SVGA server I could only use 8bpp color in X.
Meanwhile I am using 32bpp in my S3 server, is this correct if you use
SVGA??? If so, I don't know that I would want to use SVGA since it
deprecate my color by so much. In the meantime I am able to use
StarOffice, however, I can't use mail, that's all that's wrong with it.
I can use everything else as far as I can tell anyway. Maybe I should
try their fix. Has anyone experienced anything weird when using this
fix with their S3 server??? Any advice would be appreciated.

Shawn

This might be ted, that wants to be a kind of Wordpad/Write for XWin.
Debian package is in potato.

I tried it but I hated it and I deinstalled it. It reads RTF really good,
though, but I did not found an "Undo" function. Maybe its hidden somewhere,
I didn't search for long. An editor without Undo is rubbish.
