Cable modem, Debian firewall/proxy and home PC's - advice!
Well, I've finally graduated to cable-modem, and picked up a PC to hopefully use as firewall/proxy/whatever (our cable modems are notoriously insecure). Someone have advice on how to do this - tips/tricks/pitfalls? Maybe a good idea of which readme's and howto's to use? I'm not bad at config, but this part's pretty new to me... The PC is blank right now, and I'm thinking about just setting it up as a basic home PC using eth0 (the cable modem) as the FTP for pulling Debian to it, then adding whatever I need - I'm thinking ipfwadmin might be enough, put 2 NIC's in it and connect the second one to my hub and the other PC's. Sound practical? Anyone wanting to give advice feel free - [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Help - S.O.S I'm trying to install 2.0 from a CD that I got from Kelly Data. The instalation goes fine until I run dselect. I can choose my installation medium just fine. Then I can go through and pick all my packages. But then when I choose INSTALL, the CD spins for a minute and then I get the mount usage message, and then a line that says script exited with error status 1. At this point I can't get any further. This is my first time with Debian. By installation I select my Mitsumi CD-Rom (mcd) drive. The installation-routine asks for command-line-arguments for the mcd module. What does it mean. When I press the ok button, the insatllation failed. So I choose the tho option "common routines for CD-Rom drives". Then the system told error "Parameter documentation for this module is unavailable". After Enter the System asks for command-line-arguments for the cdrom module. I press Enter again, and the system means " The Installation succeeded". The Installation of the Base System I choose the CD-Rom drive as sourche. I choose "propietary" as CD Interface, because I have a exra card as CD-Rom controller. When I insert the Debian CD-Rom in the drive comes the answer "the CDROM was not mountes succsessfull.. There have already been several replies to this, but allow me to add my two cents. You can of course stop xdm by executing "/etc/init.d/xdm stop" as root. This is the standard Debian way to stop daemons of all kinds. You can also simply tell xdm to stop managing a particular server, like :0. At the xdm login screen, just type . That will terminate the X server, which is what hogs all the resources anyway. You don't need to be root to do this. To tell xdm to start managing all the displays listed in its Xservers file (/etc/X11/xdm/Xserver) again, send it a HUP signal. That will have to be done as root. Whatever you do, don't fool with /etc/X11/config and its "start-xdm" and "no-start-xdm" nonsense unless you're running Debian 2.0 or earlier. That was an ugly hack and is no longer necessary now that xdm is in its own package. I sometimes think I will spend the rest of my life explaining this to people. Ironically, the new way of handling xdm is more consistent will all the other daemons in daemons. People just got really used to the kludge. -- G. Re: rvplayer working?
I'm having the same problem. I just reinstalled rvplayer from debian.org as per the instructions, which included upgrading to xlib6g and reinstalling netscape, but I'm pretty much right where I was before: if I click on a .ram link, the RealPlayer pops up, but never does anything. I can run the little promo video, and I can run .ram files from my hard drive, though I have to hit Pause, then Play to make them play. Likewise, if I type in the URL manually, I can hear the file, but I have to hit Pause, then Play. Actually, this has only worked once so far. For most URLs, this fails with error #14 or does nothing at all. Any ideas where the problem might be? Richard Hall Network Services University of Tennessee

It a weird chicken and egg thing, you can only install W95 from a CD but you cant get the computer to recognize the CDROM. Thanks for the help.marlon

Trackball problem on a laptop install
Sorry, this is possibly a repeat post, but I lost a few days of the list due to an email problem. I have Slink installed on a Zenith Z-Noteflex 486 laptop. I want to set up an X server, but in the Mouse config portion of XF86Setup, I can't seem to get the trackball to respond. I've tried all the drivers and most of the variations of the /dev and baud rate setting. Any clues on how I can get the trackball to work? Re: Internet connection
Use pppconfig to setup the file for your ISP. Give it a name, say File, then in shell do 'pon File'. You should hear click as your modem initializes. TO monitor the modem progress (connection, and such), use 'plog' About sound card: You need to recompile kernel to include sound support. You get all the values from Windows, such as DMA/IRQ/etc. If it's a pnp card, you need to do some more work, such as isapnp together with kernel compilation. Andrew --- Andrei S. This dates back to when the first 8088 PC's were built. If you use up the memory below 16MB for whatever reason, and the kernel isn't holding onto some DMA space, you can be out of luck. The simple way to fix this is to compile the sound and floppy drivers into the kernel, not as modules. The drivers grab their DMA memory on boot and hold onto it forever. Since you have 128MB I don't think you'll miss the ~128K this involves. If you really want or need to do it as modules (e.g., ISA PNP sound card) I think there are options to lock the buffers in place, but I don't know what they are. ftp of complicated directory structure (with tmp simlinks)
I am trying to completely copy a complicated directory structure using ftp. It has four levels of directories, all with lots of branches. I have a root directory on the target machine, and want to create the directory structure, and copy all the files into the right places. I have tried filerunner, which throws its toys out at the first hurdle, refusing to even transfer a single file. I thought lftp's 'mirror' command sounded hopeful, but this didn't want to play either, giving: get: Access failed: 550 : not a plain file for every directory and subdirectory, and not mirror'ing anything. My nearest thing to a solution involves old-fashioned ftp. I have recreated the directory structure on the target machine down to the penultimate level (where the branching factor ~= 100). I then have a macro thus: mkdir %i cd %i lcd %i mput *.txt// I have to do it this way, cos mkdir only works mput *.wrd// this way. Also mput '*' for all these lines is mput *.wav// apparently an '?Invalid Command' cd .. lcd .. I then open an xterm on the source machine and ls the correct directory, and cut 'n' paste the output in short segments to arguments of the macro. This is not entirely satisfactory (BTW, if I run the macro with more than about 20 args, ftp stops talking to me and segfaults or exits or just generally sulks). I can't redirect the output of ftp's ls command, as it doesn't just list the filenames. So at the moment, I am running my macro about five times for each of the directories in the penultimate level. Anyone have any suggestions? Cheers Rich

mod_roaming questions
Hello, I'm relatively new to apache, but I'm trying to setup a roaming access server with Potato. I thought I had set it up correctly but it doesn't seem to be working. Maybe one of you apache studs can help out. Here's the story: I setup a machine with potato. Then I installed the apache package(s) that come with the [unstable] distribution (I think its apache 1.3.6???). Then I tried installing the "libapache-mod-roaming" package (the roaming access package). But dselect says that the "apache-common" package already provides "libapache-mod-roaming." So I think, great, its already installed, less work for me. And sure enough when I checked, in my /usr/lib/apache/1.3 directory (with all the other modules) there is a file called "mod_roaming.so." And in my "httpd.conf" file, there was a line (commented out by default) "LoadModule roaming_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/mod_roaming.so." So naturally I uncommented that line and restarted the server. Now in theory this should be working right? Netscape Communicator (4.51) gives an "unexplained network error" when it looks for the roaming access server. So I guess my questions are these: 1. did I do everything necessary? are there things I still need to compile, and if so, what? 2. Is there a place (a config file or something) where I can configure the settings for the roaming profiles, like which directories I want to use for user space, etc... ? 3. Is there and good documentation out there for mod_roaming? Thanks for reading through this long email, any and all help is appreciated!!! Ben Frame [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: libc6(-dev) version problem in slink
Thanks for your reply. Yes, you're right, I was accidentally mixing hamm and slink because the mirror site I was using still has slink as frozen and hamm as current. I used slink base disks and then selected "current" not realizing this was taking me to the hamm packages and so I was getting version conflicts. RE: Preventing xdm from starting
Well, I think there is a better way but I don't have a debian system now so the file names can changed. In the /etc/X11 directory, in a file named config, you have the line "xdm-start" or "start-xdm". Change it in "no-xdm-start" or "no-start-xdm" or comment out it. When the script /etc/init.d/xdm runs, it tests the presence of xdm-start line. If it doesn't find it, it doesn't launch xdm. Printer stopped working with Kernel 2.2
Hi all, I upgraded from kernel 2.0.34 to kernel 2.2.4 which came on my Debian-CDs. Now printing has stopped. I compiled lp and parport as modules, changed the printcap to point to /dev/lp0 instead of lp1. The printer (Nec Silentwriter2 S60P - Postscript) seems to get some data because it displays a "PROCESSING" message when I try to print something with lpr or by cat'ting a postscript file to /dev/lp0. But there is no output. All this parport stuff is very new to me. I don't have any /dev/parport devices just this: $ ls -l /dev/par* crw-rw 1 root lp 6, 0 Dec 9 1996 /dev/par0 crw-rw 1 root lp 6, 1 Dec 9 1996 /dev/par1 crw-rw 1 root lp 6, 2 Dec 9 1996 /dev/par2 crw-rw 1 root lp 6, 3 Dec 9 1996 /dev/par3 Should I make parport devices, how do I do this? I did not change the formerly working lpd setup in other places except the lp-device number: # printcap lp|nec|nec|Nec Silentwri:\ :lp=/dev/lp0:sd=/var/spool/lpd/nec:\ :sh:pw#80:pl#66:px#1440:mx#0:\ :if=/usr/sbin/psonly300-filter:\ :af=/var/log/lp-acct:lf=/var/log/lp-errs: /etc/conf.modules has this alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc options parport_pc io=0x378,0x278 If I manually insert the lp module with: $ modprobe lp a line like this appears in syslog: Apr 30 14:34:03 fliwatut kernel: lp0: using parport0 (polling). Does anybody know what might be going on here? The machine acts (in fact: it doesn't) as a print server for my SOHO office. Now I have to boot Win95 to print, which is a pain in the a** Thanks for any help in advance, yours -- ____ Frank Barknecht __ __ trip\ \ / /wire __ / __// __ /__/ __// // __ \ \/ / __ \\ ___\ / / / / / / / // // /\ \\ ___\\ \ /_/ /_/ /_/ /_//_// / \ \\_\\_\ /_/\_\

You need to add "extension=mysql.so" to your php3.ini file. HTH -Remco

I managed to get Debian on a 386/6MB, but it had two 40MB drives. As others have advised, you're likely to want to go with something smaller. Tom's root-boot (http://www.toms.net/rb/home.html) is a good start. There are links on that page to other "micro-Linux" projects. Thanks to its relatively ancient origin, I think Slackware *might* be shoehorned into a disk that size. That's if you really want a full-fledged distribution. You have a decision to make; is your budget for this project exactly zero, or do you have some discretionary funds? I can understand zero-budget (either for financial reasons or sheer mule-headed stubborness :-> ), but then you'd probably want to find a smaller setup. If you can spring for a bigger disk (100MB would be ample) then Debian is within your reach. In slink, libc6 and libc6-dev have version 2.0.7.19981211-6. In hamm, version was 2.0.7t-1, if I remember well. If you have 2.0.7v-1, you probably installed slink when it was still in the frozen stage. In this case the best thing to do would be to upgrade everything to slink, which is now stable. Thanks.
Possible problem with xlock and xscreensaver on potato
Hello, My machine using potato is configured so that the xscreensaver turns on when I am inactive. However there are other times when I use xlock to lock the display manually. When I do this xscreensaver kicks on and I am forced to enter my password twice. The problem is that a plaintext copy of my password end up sitting on the command line of one of my xterm's. This makes it fairly easy to do some social engineering to get the password. I also realize that there is no reason to run to screen lockers. Any comments appreciated Charles Suprin

[THNXS]&[Q]: SMB client for Dos/win3.11
Hi! First of all, thanks to all those who guided me into the depths of installing Linux into an archaic i386 with only 40 megs hard drive. This has been accomplished, and it is now acting as a printer server). My question is: it's easy enough to connect a win 95/8 machine to this server using samba, but I don't know what sort of software there might be to do the same from DOS and from Win3.11. We have some stuff running under these OS's and would like to take advantage of them. Is there such a client that anyone could point out to? (where to download it from, basically X-D) Thanks a lot, Jose -- Jose L Gomez Dans PhD student Radar & Communications Group Department of Electronic Engineering University of Sheffield UK
