A kind user has made some experiments which many users find to solve their problems. There are two alternative Rescue Floppies for the i386 architecture at ftp://kalle.csb.ki.se/pub/. There are also replacement kernels in that location, which you can use to simply replace the existing kernels on the boot-floppies. You'll need the Drivers Floppy from the standard location. A competing and newer set of Rescue and Driver Floppies for Adaptec users can be found at http://www.debian.org/~adric/aic7xxx/. Thank you for your reply, What I am trying to load as far as I have been able to tell is slink 2.1. However the package that I purchased has nothing called tecra on it. Re: system lock on boot
Thank you for your reply, What I thought was Debian loading drivers for the hard drives was actually Debian identifying the scsi controller since I have a dual controller card it happens twice. So it was not loading drivers as I first thought. Although I did disconnect everything except for the the cd-rom I was booting from and the hard drive I wanted to install to. No luck, still locks in the same place. Is there a way to actually determine what is causing the computer to lock. Such as something that would make the boot process go step by step with a verification of each step? Or am I destine to yank everything out of the box to see if I can get an install that way, and then install one device at a time. Although now that I have typed it that does not sound to far fetched. SCSI tape errors
Hi i have set up a SCSI DAT tape onto debian slink with kernel 2.0.38 and nfs (no_root_squash) mounted an IBM AIX directory. I use a simple backup program which tars the files from the AIX directory onto tape. It works for a little while but i think it gets into trouble when it trys to proccess a large file (200MB). I started the backup at 9:30pm and it started having problems by 11pm. Here is the error message : Jul 13 23:11:40 tapier kernel: ASC= 4 ASCQ= 1 Jul 13 23:11:40 tapier kernel: Raw sense data:0x70 0x00 0x02 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x0e 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x04 0x01 0x00 0x00 Jul 13 23:11:40 tapier kernel: st0: Error with sense data: extra data not valid Current error st09:00: sns = 70 2 Backup program errors are : tar: Read error on /dev/st0: Input/output error tar: Too many errors, quitting tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now I tried doing a tar listing of the tape this morning and it said the the start record was unable to be read. Does anyone know what is going on... it is a simple proceedure i am doing and am frustrated and perplexed as to why i am having difficulties. Thanx Zane

Re: Debian and WordPerfect
I have run both WP 7 and 8 under slink and potato. WP 7 works flawlessly, while WP 8 seems to have problems with some window managers (I can't seem to focus on the document window) but works well with others. Be sure you have all the necessary (libc5) libraries installed. On Thu, Jul 13, 2000 at 09:44:38PM +, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > Has anyone been able to run WordPerfect under Slink or Potato. I think that doing xhost local:root is better. There are 2 reasons for this: 1. You're specifying a user name, which gives added security if you've got a multi-user system. 2. You're specifying a local connection, not a connection that uses a network interface. The X server connections with use Unix sockets, not TCP sockets. Some of my notes should be in the archive for this group; I'm attaching my first message to the WP8 "support" Corel mailing list below. There are a number of libraries that must be installed: xlib6, libc5, & xpm4.7 are the ones most often mentioned as not present and thus the source of problems. In the end i decided to write it off as a problem with my video driver which was some SuSE contribution to the XFree project that hadn't been incorporated into the Slink package. I think that conclusion was motivated by some comment i saw on this list. My install with Potato was flawless, and I'm pleased with WP8 over the Star Office version i have (the version before acquisition by Sun). Simon, I've not done anything like this on Linux, but did a similar thing once on a SCO Xenix system. Basically, you want to have the 'tcpdump' program run with its I/O redirected to the terminal line. To do this, you would have to disable logins on the serial line and have the tcpdump start up in an rc script during boot, being sure it comes up after networking support is initialized. I did this in a shell script that first redirected its stdin/out/err to point to the proper device (/dev/ttyS1 in your case). Since you don't want keyboard input, you'd want to close the stdin part rather than redirect it. You may also have to use 'stty' to set the serial line parameters, since getty would do this normally (and you have disabled it). I'm sorry I can't give you specifics at this point, I don't have access to any UNIX system where I could play with this type of stuff (being as root privileges are needed). Let me know if you need more help, though, and I'll see what I can do later at home. -- Bob McGowan Staff Software Quality Engineer VERITAS Software [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: Dialup Help!
The PAP protocol for user authentication sends the user name and password, just as you would use if using a login. But the authentication process is handled by the PAP protocol implementation on the host rather than by a login implementation. I think there may have been confusion with the PAP protocol, which, like CHAP, is a protocol defining a method of verifying a "user" to a "host" when the user and host are trying to set up a PPP connection. The PAP or CHAP protocol "runs on top of" PPP. This means the PPP connection happens first, then authentication over the PPP connection. A login based authentication process runs as normal text over a serial line (just like with a terminal) to login on the host, which then starts up the PPP program on the host (the "shell", if you like), which then establishes a PPP connection with the user. Autologin on Serial Console
I currently have a Dec VT320 hooked up to my Debian box via a serial line on /dev/ttyS1. This box sits in the kitchen spewing the output of a tcpdump and provides and interesting way to monitor network activity in the house. I currently have to login and run "tcpdump -i eth1". I'd like tcpdump to be run automatically when the console is powered up and for no input to be accepted from the keyboard. To that end I've investigated getty-ps and mgetty. Both want a login or at lease a username in the case of getty-ps. Has anyone successfully managed to get a prelogged in console working? Re: XFree86 server for ATI Rage 128 Pro
Thanks to all who responded. I discovered that the Rage128 support in the XFree86 3.3.6 SVGA xserver does work with this card if you tell it what the video chipset identification. It appears that the Rage 128 Pro chips are not properly detected as can be seen in the lines below. I got it to work by putting the following line in the Device section ChipId 0x5246 Note that this is not the ChipId reported by /proc/pci. That value (0x5046) gives the same blank screen. Perhaps this should be inserted in the xf86config database for the Rage Fury Pro and the Xpert 2000 Pro which are the cards using the Rage 128 Pro chip. There's a much easier workaround for this: Give root permission to access the display (i.e. the X Server). There are many issues with allowing any kind of access to the X server, and you don't want to do it unnecessarily. But in this case, since everybody (your user and the root login via su) it's probably safe. As the user who owns the X session, run 'xhost local:root' Then as the root user (in the shell where you'll be running commands as root), run 'export DISPLAY=:0' to tell X clients run within that shell what display to access. Re: Creative Soundblaster 16 PnP ISA
Its a PNP, so you need: 1. Install isapnp package. 2. Run pnpdump and create a config file for your card. 3. Run isapnp with that file. Use IRQ,IO, etc settings same as you supply to your kernel (if possible. pnpdump will tell you). 4. Compile sound support as a module. 5. reboot with your new kernel, and insert sound modules. I have a small guide written up on how to configure modem with isapnpits the same thing. http://arshes.dyndns.org/Linux/ HTH. Andrei - Andrei S. Debian + other distribution (more questions)
Hi again, debianers, continuing my questions about two distributions on the samen HD, Somebody told me that Debian could use the same swap partition of my RedHat. So, when I install Debian, should I select it to initialize the existent swap partition or this will damage my RedHat? kernel null pointer violations
Well, I ditched dhcp last night and tried setting up the ethernet card with just ifconfig and a static IP. I got the same kernel complaints. So, it's not dhcp. Now, I looked on the cdrom that Rogers gave me. Under directory /cdrom/NETCARDS/SOHOware/SFA110A.PCI/LINUX I find... [EMAIL PROTECTED] LINUX]$ ls README.TXT TULIP.C The readme says to use the tulip driver, which I have, and it has detected the ethernet card perfectly. So, I'm convinced that I have the right driver. I think it's a problem in the kernel. Since I have no idea what VA Linux Systems did to this kernel, I'm going to grab 2.2.17 from Potato. Hopefully that'll fix the problem. *g* Mike -- Michael P. I had to upgrade to 4.0 you use my card. The debs aren't available yet for reasons that have already been discussed on this list. However, you can get the binaries or source code from xfree86.org. I thought in install Debian's lilo on it's partition and live RedHat's lilo on the MBR, so I would use my old lilo ( I think it wouldn't be so bad). Thanks. Or just $: bash -x /var/lib/dpkg/info/dhcpcd.postinst works fine. :-) HTH, YMMV, HAND :-) -- Best file compression around: "DEL *.*" = 100% compression ___

RE: annoying C-s terminal freeze
Title: RE: annoying C-s terminal freeze Hi, if you have a terminal without (enough) scrolling capabilities and a lot of messages you do want to read when they appear, then "freezing" is just handy. I think you can bind the freezing of the terminal to other keycodes than Ctrl-s, but I did not try to, so I suggest you read the appropriate manuals for the appropriate terminal emulators...unless others have already working tips! RE: networking questions
As all M$ Windows 95/98/NT/2000 uses a protocal called SMB (Sesssions Message Block), you will have to install SaMBa (http://www.samba.org). The debs are kept in net and otherosfs. To configure SaMBa, I strongly suggest you also download/ apt-get SWAT (Samba Web Administration Tool). Once installed, use SWAT to configure the smb.conf in /etc/.and remember to include a line in your smb.conf: browseable = yes; so that your Win machines can see the shared directories in the Network Neighborhood. If you have any trouble/ difficulties, you can e-mail me and I will guide you through. Cheers.
