proftp does not want to show symlinked directories...

2001-09-03 Thread jdls
Hi,

I have proftpd running and anonymous ftp too and I wanted the anonymous ftp
directory to show files residing in another directory so instead of just
copying or moving files to the directory I want to show I just create a
softlink ln -s /foo/bar /false/foo/barthe problem is the files are not
showing in the /false/foo/bar directory

Any ideas?

Thanks

Hmm, oh yeah. Then it's the libc6-2.1 in potato vs. libc6-2.2 in unstable.

I had the same problem a few weeks ago. I used KDE2 for a while, but
didn't care for it. I tried researching the problem, but came up with few
references. I then came across the Debian TrueType Mini-HOWTO, and
installed xfs and xfstt, and then fiddled with the FontPath setting if the
XF86Config file (following instructions in the mini-HOWTO). Needless to
say, whatever I did works. Gnome, GTK, and X apps are now readable.

Try xfs and xfstt, and the HOWTO can be found through a google search.
They are small packages, and setup takes 5-10 minutes. And let me know if
it works for you.

Help! with exim -- freezing mail

2001-09-03 Thread Cam Ellison
How do I either: (1) change exim's idea of my system id number or set it up so
it will detect it properly when I install?

For reasons I won't go into, I screwed up my system and had to reinstall, but I
kept the /home directory intact. Naturally, I created a new account for myself
(different name) temporarily as part of the setup, and then had to add my real
personal account, etc.

I blew the temporary one away, and used the /home directory that was created
for the original /home partition. Exim now thinks I have one i.d., and freezes
all the mail. I can solve that problem, but it is taking too much time.

I removed exim and related apps through apt-get, then re-installed, but this
has had no effect.

Please -- any ideas will be gratefully received.

TIA

Your mouse is supported -- I have an older Logitech MouseMan Wheel
(USB / PS2 adapter) and it works well. Just for fun I took the
reciever from my brother's Logitech wireless keyboard and MouseMan
Wheel and plugged it into my USB port and Linux found them right away.

The key is to load "mousedev" instead of "usbmouse". If "usbmouse" is
needed it will be loaded automagically. I'm not sure, but it may the
that mousedev is needed to recognize the mouse itself, then usbmouse
is used to drive it. You will need to point gpm (or X) to
/dev/input/mice instead. This device file will report back all (USB,
I'm not sure about PS2) mice attached to the machine if there is more
than one. Hey, I just noticed that there is /dev/input/mouse0 too. I
guess that lets you specify certain mice for certain programs. That's
cool.

I ran into this myself and tried about 1400 different things to fix it.
I did... Problem is I'm not sure which did it ;-)

I'd suggest two fairly simple things:

-- Get rid of 'xfs' (if you don't need it -- you *don't* need it for
local TrueType font support, for example)

-- Choose either 75dpi or 100dpi xfonts and whichever you don't use,
remove/purge the other. Then go through the various config files and
manually remove the references to them.

it is either the bios or the board. I don't recall if you said the

Partly political, yes, in the sense that a lot of developers care less
about fixing broken non-free stuff. Although it would probably have been
kept around if not for the many security holes - I looked at the code,
and it really did appear to be written with no thought of security
whatsoever.

Basically, its lack of maintenance came up on -qa, nobody seemed to have
any interest in taking it over or at least keeping it on life-support
for a bit longer, so it was considered better to drop it.

Since it comes up here every now and then, there are several reasons why
you might see packages listed as "obsolete/local" in dselect?

  * The maintainer decides that it's no longer needed. Maintainers have
pretty much total control over their packages, so not much more is
needed. Somebody else might decide to reintroduce it, of course.

  * It's no longer built from any source package; this usually means
that it's been superseded by a later version or otherwise renamed
(e.g. libraries), but sometimes means that one variant of a package
has been dropped (ted-gtk was a recent example).

  * It's "maintained" by the Quality Assurance Group, i.e. orphaned, and
eventually it becomes obvious that nobody is interested in taking
responsibility for it properly, so we drop it.

  * It has release-critical (serious or above) bugs which aren't being
fixed. Usually this only results in the package being dropped for
one release, but sometimes it's removed altogether.

In all cases, you should be able to find the exact reason why the
package was removed at:

  http://ftp-master.debian.org/removals.txt

With Xfree 4.1.0 this is no longer the case. You still need the
proprietary module for some special candy, but the free module runs
just fine here on its own, including stuff like DRI and DualHead.

Sounds like it couold be ECN.
Is it enabled in your kernel?

If so, try as root:

'echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_ecn'

I hope that helps you.

Hopefully installing the icewm deb will sort things almost out of the box.
As for stopping xdm, it is answered in /usr/share/doc/xfree86-common/FAQ.gz.
Yet I believe it will not be necessary.
I am not sure but basically the configuration of the default window manager is
done with the alternative system and /etc/X11/Xsession.d/50xfree86-common_deter
mine-startup.

I am not sure if ~/.xsession-errors will be meaningful in this case but you
might still look at it. It might tell you what went wrong. Another file that
could be handy is /var/log/xdm.log.

Perhaps you want to post your ~/.xsession here?

news servers and port 119

2001-09-03 Thread Paul B. Bertrand
I recently upgraded to a generic 2.4.8-k6 kernel from a 2.2.17 kernel
and found that I am no longer able to connect to my non-isp newsserver,
namely giganews. I am, however, still able to connect to my isp
newsserver. Initially, I thought this was a giganews or isp issue, but
when I rebooted with my old kernel, I was able to connect to my
giganews.

Does anyone know why I wouldn't be able to connect to a newsserver
outside of my isp? I don't remember ever doing anything special in
order to do this before, especially with the kernel.

This is the error message I receive:

Connecting to host news-central.giganews.com
...connection to 216.166.62.35, port 119:Connection refused
Unable to make connection. Giving up.
slrn fatal error:
Failed to initialize server.

I also tried using port 23 but that didn't work either. Also, I am able
to ping giganews with the new kernel.

Thanks for your help.

My guess would be these libraries somehow conflict with something in the
stable branch. You'd probably have to do a "dist-upgrade" with all that
implies... The newest version definitely does alot more than previous
ones (some of the changes are rather dramatic and take some getting used
to).

Generally it's not good to mix stable and unstable anyway. Perhaps

mga.o is open source, mga_hal.o is not though, and you will need that to
use it with XFree86 (for DRI anyway, I'm pretty sure you can get 2d only
still). Matrox drivers in linux are very mature, and mplayer's mga_vid
device gives you video quality that's (IMHO) better than what I've seen
from Windows Media Player. Were I you though, I'd get something like a
g400 or g400 max. These don't have the closed source driver needs that
the g450 does, and so far as I know the g400 max is still the fastest of
the three.

Can't install latest gnucash

2001-09-03 Thread Andy Davidson
I wanted to upgrade to the latest version of gnucash which has some
features I need that are not in the stable version (1.3.4) But it is
only in unstable, so I added the following line to sources.list
deb http://http.us.debian.org/ unstable main
and did an 'apt-get update' and then 'apt-get install gnucash'.

But it failed with the following messages:
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies:
gnucash: Depends: libgal9 (>= 0.10) but it is not installable
Depends: libgtkhtml14 (>= 0.11.1) but it is not installable

Am I out of luck until more is done with gnucash? Or have I --- heaven
forfend! --- made a mistake somewhere?

An additional question: If I now remove the above line from
sources.list and do 'apt-get update' will I have removed unstable
stuff from my package lists?

AFAIK, kapm-idled has something to do with apm management on newer
kernels. That 80% CPU usage is apparently something of a lie, since
when this process is switched in, it isn't doing anything (e.g. 80%
idled, or some such). I'm still running in 2.2.x land, so maybe someone
else can give a better explanation...

I've compiles and installed freeswan on potato successfully (I had to
recompile a kernel though). downloaded the sources from woody.

I think I can guess that if you're using Lotus Notes, most of your
employee's are working on windows. if that's correct, then you should
consider pptp instead of ipsec. I'm no windows whiz but I think that pptp
is easier to set then ipsec on windows (on linux it's a different
matter). it worked fine on a startup I was working for (all the
employee's were connecting to a cisco firewall with pptp and radius
authentication).

Hi... my campus just added a bunch of 802.11b base stations for wireless
access by students. I'm running Woody with a 2.4.7 kernel on a Dell
Inspiron 7500. Does anyone have any experience with an 802.11b wireless
adapter that works with Debian out-of-the-box?

My current network adapter is an Intel PRO/100 and modem combo card that
takes up both slots, and offers a real RJ45 and RJ11 ports, as opposed
to X-jacks or dongles. If I can get an 802.11b adapter that also has
this feature, so I don't have to swap all the time, that would be a huge
plus.

Thanks!

Hello

I am trying to get quake3 arena working with debian. So far, I have
all the GL related stuff installed but I can't get quake3 to work
and all my rendering seems to be in software.

In my XF86Config-4 file,
I have the glx and dri modules loaded.
I have the tdfx and glide drivers installed.

However when I run glxinfo, I get :

If I try to fix that by defining MESA_GLX_FX I get an error:

For what its worth, I tried to apt-get install as much as possible.
So, I installed mesa3-glide2 but I don't think that works for voodoo5 so
I installed the glide3 source and installed it. At least I think I
installed it. But it didn't seem to help things.

Any help is appreciated.

Why, yes, of course. Tracking motion sensor coupled with a chain gun
comes to mind. Aim at the knees for maximum effect. Electrified razor
wire is another possibility.

Otherwise, no. Either put the server where "someones" cannot get to it,
or run applications that don't need a terminal window, run happily in the
background and save their state information accross restarts.

I added a bit interactivity this afternoon; you can now decide to create

The biggest problem I see is, that wget will always create a file, even
if it could not be downloaded correctly; apt might get very confused,
when it encounters such a file (or does it recognise this case?).

You should check the downloads or modify the wget-lines to create a
log-file as well.

or apt-get auto-clean

they will even stay there.

Try this:

mv /var/cache/apt/archives /var/cache/apt/archives.backup
ln -s /your/directory /var/cache/apt/archives"

If you have some files in your archive that are needed for the upgrade,
apt will complain that they are missing and you'll have to get them
again (or copy from archives.backup).

Security from others when server running

2001-09-03 Thread JakeCatfox
Hi, I'm running a server in a public location, and the applications running
on the server run in their own virtual console (or an xterm window). However,
if someone came up and closed the xterm or hit ^C they could cancel the
server operation, which risks data loss, server failure, etc., and they would
also have full access to every aspect of the user account the server is run
on.

Is there a good way to keep others from messing with the server?

Thanks,

If you don't want a graphical login remove xdm with apt-get.

To load icewm from xdm or startx, if the executable name is "icewn" put -
exec icewm
in ~/.xsession

Make sure all "exec" lines are backgrounded with "&" except one.

For example -

#!/bin/sh
exec xterm &
exec icewm

Used in this manner .xsession doesn't have to be set as executable.

New install and just got X to work. xdm starts twm, which is lame, on
VC7 with a login. You can't get out of it on that console. Startx won't
work anywhere of cours.

I want to use e.g. icewm. How do I reconfigure xdm to default to a
different
window manager, and/or turn xdm off? I couldn't find the script to
change in /etc/X11.

I wrote a test .xsession file (did make executable) with just exec
xterm. Even though allow-user-xsession does in
/etc/X11/Xsession.options, that $HOME/.xsession doesn't prevail and
still stuck with twm.

possible.

Suggestions for alternate graphic cards are also welcome, of course.

The problem here is how you're going root, and your X authentication.

I'd highly recommend sudo over su for gaining root access, even if it
only means you're doing 'sudo -s' (or 'sudo su -' as I do) to gain a
full root shell. There's been past discussion here of benefits (and
criticisms, notably by Ethan Benson). If you're going to use su, add
the '-' argument to get a login (fully initialized) shell.

The X access issue has to do with your MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE.

Do ***NOT*** use 'xhost' to provide access to your X session, this is
highly dangerous. Though, more recently, forbidding remote X
connections with the -nolisten option is becoming a default.

To allow X access to a specific dispaly:

  - Set your DISPLAY variable appropriately.
  - If root, merge your .Xauthority file with that of the user running
the X session, e.g.:

  $ xauth -merge ~peter/.Xauthority

This should allow launching X clients to the display.

The message you cite should be filed as a bug against emacs, it is
providing outdated, dangerous, advice.

Cheers.

As far as supporting nvidia, it makes no difference whether you download
their tarball drivers or install the nvidia-glx-src and nvidia-kernel-src
Debs, because the latter are just a packaged version of the former, and
are designed to auto-download the necessary files from Nvidia's site, so
as far as 'supporting' Nvidia's non-free drivers, it's the same either
way.

As for this notion of 'supporting' Nvidia by d/ling non-free drivers,
oh, yes, Nvidia's executives are just waiting with bated breath
for the next batch of FTP logs so they can see how popular their drivers
are.

Probably not, but as a company run by (presumably) intelligent people they
understand that closing their drivers is not in their best interests from
a business standpoint, which is why they opened the 'nv' driver in the
base X distribution.

> > Regardless, I like the debs

Well, just the fact that I like using my card's 3D capabilities. The
'nvidia' and 'nv' drivers are more or less the same, except that the former
supports 3D, but consequently has to be closed-source in order to comply
with Nvidia's licence with SGI for OpenGL. It's SGI that people should
be griping about.

You need to kill both the pid and remove the ~/.netscape/lock file.
BTW try "kill -12" when trying to kill netscape. It is suppose to save
bookmarks and such. If that doesn't work then "kill -9" it.

As you suggested I gave the append entry :
Image   = /boot/kernel-2.4.9
label   = Woody-249
Root= /dev/hda10
VGA = 0x31A
append  = "hdd=cdrom lp=parport0 parport=0x378,none video=vesa"

(my lilo as installed looks slightly different but that hasn't created any
problems
on any other machine and shouldn't be the cause here.)
 Summary :
Starting lpd :parport0 : detected irq 7 ; use procfs to enable
interrupt
driven operation
 continues to occur.

I would like to ask you about Interrupts and Parport.

As per the rules who gets Interrupt 7 ?
Is it Parport0 ?

Should I now modify the append line to turn 'none' into 7 ?

Good idea. I still have the original potato kernel (since upgraded to
woody/sid) so I tried it. After trying several other drivers I went full
circle and convinced myself that I do have the right driver (i810_audio),
which is the one that caused sawfish to hang when gnome window events had
sound turned on.

It does work somewhat:

I can run "play english.au" and it sounds perfect but gives these
messages:

playing english.au
sox: Sound card appears to only support singled word samples. Overriding
format
sox: Sound card appears to only support 2 channels. Overriding format

If I try to play the same file with xanim, the sound is all choppy and
fast (sounds like The Chipmunks).

Maybe the i810 support isn't very good?

Yes, after looking at the glimpse web page I gathered that it was
probably a 'political' decision to remove it; it seems to have become
shareware, so it's fair enough.

Htdig seems to be for html only. Namazu didn't work for me - kept producing
error messages in Japanese! I got the swish++ deb package but it didn't
install the binary - a bug in the package on testing? Finally I got the
tar.gz package from the swish++ website (it's actually NOT compressed,
just a tar package), and it seems to be working now after compiling.

Thanks to all for help.

the latter seems to work.. But I still don't understand why I am not
allowed to run startx. I noticed /etc/X11/Xserver reads Console,
which seems to imply anybody on the console is allowed to run X.

I am sorry about replying to my own post..

startx not for normal user?

2001-09-03 Thread Remco van 't Veer
Hi,

I just installed Debian on a fresh workstation but only root can open
a X session. First I tried startx using a normal user but it
complains:

xf86OpenConsole: Server must be running with root permissions.
You should be using Xwrapper to start the server or xdm.
We strongly advice against make the server SUID!

I am unable to find Xwrapper and xdm doesn't let me login. Xdm
restarts immediately after I type my password. The logfile xdm.log
reads:

  AUDIT: Mon Sep 3 16:00:00 2001: 599 X: client 2 rejected from local host
Auth name: XDM-AUTHORIZATION-1 ID: -1
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
  ..

I removed the .Xauthority file, but that does not help. Does anybody
know how I can fix this?

TIA,
Remco

You're using a winmodem. Try the module provided by motorola. And use minicom
for the task (so says motorola). be forwarned - haven't tried this on a debian
box. motorola claims they only tested it on rh7.1 (seawolf)

First, let me thank everyone for their help, and the XF86Config
files you sent me. Unfortunately none of them work, but I figured out
why. After looking closer at the video card itself, I realized that a few
resistors have been sheared off! What I get for buying used computer
equipment w/o careful inspection. :(
Though I had two of these cards and the second one appears
intact/undamaged, so I installed that one. Much better, no more obtrusive
vertical lines. Though, I still have vertical lines and their behavior now
is much more interesting. They are even spaced across the screen, one
pixel wide, but only appear where there is text on the screen (i.e. in a
shell window, netscape, any where text is displayed), while graphics (i.e.
wallpaper or picture in netscape) are completely clean and fine. Even
stranger, the lines only extend on a line of text as far the text does. It
is almost like they are showing the tab settings or something!
I have tried all the XF86Config file sent to me again to no avail,
and messed with the HTotal value as well with out success. I doubt it is a
hardware problem this time as the lines are very software dependent
(i.e. hardware does not differentiate between graphics and text, it is just
pixels to it). So, does anyone have any more ideas? Thanks.

PS. If someone wants a screen shot to better see what I am
describing, let me know and I will send it to you via private email.

Correct, works like a charm and is simply GREAT :-)
I could recommend running POTATO and upgrading to 2.4 using above URI as I've
done it @home for my Gateway and it works without any problems including
iptables (that I needed to learn about them) :-)

Bear in mind that the early 2.0 releases of cyrus weren't officially

You're basically correct in your assumptions:) I'd be willing to bet
there aren't many people out there who could tell you exactly how IPSEC
works, but I can tell you the basics at least;) When you're using
IPSEC, all traffic destined for a particular network is encrypted and
tunnelled through a single TCP port (ESP). Any number of authentication
and encryption methods can be used, but most use 3DES and IKE or
Pre-shared keys. You can filter traffic on that port as you normally
would.

> b) what vpn solution or approach would you recommend

We've been using FreeS/WAN successfully at work for six months now.
Management could be a little bit easier, but that can be remedied with
scripts (If I ever get around to it:). As for actual performance
though, I definitely can't complain. I'm not sure about Potato, but
Woody has both the FreeS/WAN kernel modules and userland utils
available.

You can find more info here:

and here:

The connection is almost definitely secure, but the problem we struggle
with at work is whether or not the client machine is secure. We're very
reluctant (Indeed, we haven't) offered software-based VPN's to any of
our employees or clients. It seems to us that the only comfortably
secure solution is to give the client a hardware-based firewall/vpn
appliance. We're looking at some of the sweet embedded Linux devices
now, but up until this point we've been giving out low-end workstations
to our employees that act as a firewall/gateway/vpn.

now, am i right in saying

> databases and check their emails with the internal servers? can vpn be done
> using dial-up? what about dynamic ip addresses on the vpn server will it be
> ok?

Yep, it should work out for any application. Your clients sitting on a
VPN connection are, for all intents and purposes, on your LAN. There
are subtle differences (Such as their IP's being external,
Internet-routable, and they miss out of broadcast messages) but for the
most part you can think of them as being on a really-slow segment of
your network:) A VPN should be perfectly suited to support Notes-type
applications. We've run into problems running NFS over a VPN, but other
than that everything has worked out just fine.

> having said that what vpn solution is recommended for lotus notes clients?

Welp, I haven't actually done it or read about it, but like I said, I
suspect it would work out with little or no problems.
