Taking an image from a joliet+rock ridge cd.
I originally thought that I could use dd to take an image of anything. I'm easily making joliet+rock ridge cds with cdrecord. Now, afterwards I'm only able to view those joliet+rock ridge cds on windows machines and dd is unable to take images of those cds. I have joliet compiled into kernel. Why can't I even mount those cds ?

problem installing dhelp
When trying to install dhelp, I get the following weird message: dhelp_parse: can't open /var/lib/dhelp/titles Even if I purge dhelp and then reinstall (so that /var/lib/dhelp is deleted) it still happens. Yes, I'm running as root; no, the immutable bit is not set; and no, I'm not currently running any sort of advanced security software like LIDS. Anybody have ANY idea why this could be happening? I'm at a loss. Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated, as I really like the services dhelp provides. Thanks in advance. -- John Patton [EMAIL PROTECTED] "Never mistake knowledge for wisdom. Segfaults while copying files on IDE
Hi all, I'm getting some wierd issue with my linux box, I simply can't copy big files between fs without getting a segfault. And I really don't know if it is an hardware or software bug. I'm running Sid, with a 2.4.10 kernel, on a Abit KT7 with an Tbird 1Ghz, there is two hard disk : hda: IBM-DTLA-305040, ATA DISK drive hdb: IBM-DTLA-307015, ATA DISK drive I highly suspect the second one to be the source of all my troubles (as it has proven multiple time in the past to be unrealiable) but the system won't recognize the first one at boot time if the second one is not there (not a jumper mis-configuration, I checked). here is for example the output of a strace cp (bigfile) (otherfs) [*snip*] write(4, "\235\206\24\17\334RL\313\245\242\330\331e\212\223\210\221"..., 4096) = 4096 read(3, +++ killed by SIGSEGV +++ [end] I'll try to change hardware element one by one to see which element is faulty, In the next few days, I'm going to buy a new hard disk and copy my system on it (if I can copy it without getting segfaults...). So, does anyone of you got any idea of what's going on or can help me to figure it ? Thanks in advance Fabien Piuzzi [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.demenzia.net

Sorry about the newbieness... It's sensible to suppose that if you're a newbie you're using one of those "pre-packaged" kernels. With some notable exceptions, the pre-packaged kernels have everything you'll need (and more) to get your hardware working. You'll probably only need to enable scsi emulation. You need to just add a line to your /etc/lilo.conf like: append "hdd=ide-scsi" The hdd varies with the actual drive designation of your CD writer (the most popular use of the scsi emulation stuff). Then you add the corresponding module to your /etc/modules file: a line for (surprise!) ide-scsi

Have either of you checked to make sure you don't have gpm running. This is a common symptom of X and gpm conflicting. plip, no IRQ? - debian on my laptop
Hey Yo Hoh, everybody! after "modprobe plip" (on woody,2.4.9,with modules parport, parport_pc and plip) i get the following: plip0: parport0 has no IRQ. using IRQ-less mode, which is fairly inefficient! plip0: parallel port at 0x378, not using IRQ. but while booting i read something like: parport0 using IRQ7 (which would fit nicely with 0x378, wouldnt it?) BTW, i want to use plip to set my baby laptop up with debian (no CD only 4megs of ram (no bootdisk) but the disk is huge - well, kind of (1GB)). (or is there a way of directly installing from my "big" pc via plip onto my laptop? i tried this of course, but i cannot load the modules before giving a root-partition (which is supposed to be on the laptop... also "alt-f2"ing to a console i couldnt get plip to working) so (on bigdebby, the "real" PC) "ifconfig plip0 bigdebby pointopoint babylap" - works (at least doesnt complain - no news is) "ifconfig plip0" shows: plip0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr FC:FC:7F:00:00:01 inet addr:127.0.0.1 P-t-P:192.168.0.12 Mask:255.255.255.255 UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:10 RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b) Interrupt:255 Base address:0x378 2nd line: P-t-P "my.baby.laptop.computer"; the Mask: on my baby laptop i use mask 255.255.255.0 (could this turn out to cause problems? how do i change it on debian (not having an /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 - file)) last line: Interrupt: 255 ,why that? why does it choose an IRQ? or is 255 not a "real" IRQ? how do i change the devices IRQ? now, i can "route add plip0 baby well, many questions and i havent got a clue of what to do here - if you are any wiser, _please_ let me know. oh, yes: on the laptop i can use plip - i already have "monkeylinux" running which intalls onto an existing DOS-FAT (you have to start it from dos using loadlin) but i dont get any apps to work under X (yes i intend to use X - did work with "2diskX", but again no apps for me - i need a small wordprocessor (i had abiword in mind) any suggestions on alternatives on that are appreciated, too) if you know a fine non-X wordpro (like the good old "word" ;) ) please also inform me on that. that would solve all my prob easiest - i dont need X, but so far nobody was able to tell me a non-X wordpro for linux :( im counting on all of you out there thank you very much cu kamome -- GMX - Die Kommunikationsplattform im Internet. http://www.gmx.net " Description: Binary data

Hi, I am running Debian Unstable and I am having some problems. The problem is that after a minute or less, the cursor freezes. Sometimes it starts with just acting 'weird & jumpy' and then it freezes. Other times it just freezes at without any prior weirdness in movement. Every package on the system should be the newest available, according to apt-get. Hope I can find help here, because I would really like to make the switch and start using Linux as my desktop OS and not just at the server OS. Blackbox is my Windowmanager, but the problem also occurs under Windowmaker (although it seems to happens much faster than under Blackbox). Regards, Troels

A filesystem error detected by the kernel will still force an fsck on the next reboot, but it may already be too late to prevent data loss at that point. -- Alan Shutko <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> - In a variety of flavors! Starting X early
Hello, I'm looking for a way to start X (kdm to be exact) before my system is done booting. On a stock debian system KDM is started at the end of runlevel 2, S99kdm . However it takes a few seconds before X is started. My idea was to start kdm a bit earlier so X would start parallel with the last few items of the runlevel, instead of when it's all done (saving me some time waiting). So I changed S99kdm into S20kdm. Now X seems to wait until the rest of the system is done booting before actually starting, which leaves me staring at a black screen. I can't find why X is waiting (I assume it's X itself that does the waiting as my screen flickers and changes to black) or how to change it. I know it's not a very good idea as I might miss some bootmessages, but I can handle that. Any ideas how to start X without waiting until the system is completly done booting? -- Casper Gielen [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- [..] and 2000 only pissed me off with it's vague,"You have a hardware error, contact your hardware vendor." errors. The strange thing is that traceroute says the connect fails far away, not here - 1 gw-081-147.chi1.dsl.speakeasy.net (64.81.147.1) 2 border5.f5-1.speakeasy-15.chg.pnap.net (64.94.35.219) 3 core4.fe0-0-bbnet1.chg.pnap.net (64.94.32.6) 4 so-0-3-1.ar3.CHI1.gblx.net (64.211.207.5) 5 pos1-3-622M.cr1.CHI1.gblx.net (208.49.59.213) 6 so0-0-0-2488M.br2.CHI1.gblx.net (208.49.59.206) 7 208.51.6.30 (208.51.6.30) 8 sl-bb22-chi-14-0.sprintlink.net (144.232.26.6) 9 sl-bb20-nyc-11-0.sprintlink.net (144.232.18.54) 10 sl-bb20-pen-10-0.sprintlink.net (144.232.18.37) 11 sl-bb25-pen-8-0.sprintlink.net (144.232.5.174) 12 sl-gw26-pen-0-0-0.sprintlink.net (144.232.5.186) 13 sl-internap-22-0.sprintlink.net (144.232.190.214) 14 border6.ge2-0-bbnet1.phi.pnap.net (216.52.64.10) 15 halfcom-1-gw.s7-2.border6.phi.pnap.net (216.52.64.218) 16 * * * 17 * * * Something similar happens with the 2600 MX and my bank. Help with a large disk parition
I have a 18GB SCSI HDD. I have created a first partition (around 6GB) which is labeled /dev/sdb1. It's in use and works great (a Squid cache). Now I would like to create a Debian rsync mirror on the last 12GB ... created the partition with fdisk. here is the pic: lori-renato:/home# fdisk -l /dev/sdb Disk /dev/sdb: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 2212 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes Device BootStart EndBlocks Id System /dev/sdb1 1 765 6144831 83 Linux /dev/sdb2 766 2212 11623027+ 83 Linux but this is what I get when I issue the mke2fs command. I'm not sure what 'auto eth0' does, I atleast don't have it with my DSL connection. An example: iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.0.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 192.168.0.0 gateway 192.168.0.122 DNS entries you put to /etc/resolv.conf if they aren't put there already during installation. On the otherhand, if that DSL router has DHCP server, you can just install dhcp client and get addresseses from there too. Provided of course router has such functionality and it is configured right. I then tried the option '--nocheck' > to no avail. Please point out what I'm missing. I suggest looking at the debian packaging manual and/or the new maintainers guide (debian packages of both are available). Briefly, steps are as follows. You want a package, for example gsl. I am assuming there are no dependency problems here. In this case, just issue the following command as root in a appropriate directory (/usr/local/src/gsl is good). "apt-get -b source gsl". If you already have the sources (gsl_0.9.3-1.diff.gz, gsl_0.9.3-1.dsc, gsl_0.9.3.orig.tar.gz) in /usr/local/src/gsl and want to build the package go to the unpacked directory, for example /usr/local/src/gsl/gsl-0.9.3. (If the directory has not been unpacked you can do so by issuing dpkg-source -x gsl_0.9.3-1.dsc in /usr/local/src/gsl.) Then (in /usr/local/src/gsl/gsl-0.9.3) issue "dpkg-buildpackage -b -uc -rfakeroot". You will need to do all this as root. Doing this as user is preferable but a little more complex. If you have unsatisfied dependencies, things get even more complex. Email me if you need further help. Oh yes, and don't post to linux.debian.user as few people will see your post. Mail to debian user instead (see list.debian.org). Sincerely, Faheem Mitha.
Mysql-Php error
Title: Message Not sure if this is the right place to be asking this question but I just recently installed Mysql - client and server and PHP 4 and also PHP4-Mysql. I am trying to configure PHPNuke but when I load the default index.php page it returns this error Call to undefined function: mysql_connect() in /var/www/html/mainfile.php on line 42 I can connect to the database locally but the error seems to be in remote connections. Any ideas would be appreciated. I have read this is a common error and seems to be related to PHP not being configured with Mysql. I installed my packages with apt-get. Read a xfs partition from windows.
Hi, Are there any software to windows which can read more filesystems than vfat. I would be intrested if there was anything that could read xfs ext2,3 and reiserfs. If not, will it be very difficult to write such program ? Thanks Bo Karlsson - bkw [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I suggest using pine 4.33. This is the version in testing/unstable and I was able to sucessfully compile it on potato from deb sources from testing/unstable. You don't say whether you are running stable, testing or unstable. If you want instructions on how to do this, email me. OK, I don't know much about this, but do I understand you correctly as saying you changed your bios preferences so that it should boot from the CDROM but doesn't? And that it did this Ok before the reformatting? In this case, you could 1) Boot from floppies and *then* use the CDROM. 2) Reinstall the bios. I personally would consider 2 since if I understand you correctly, your bios is messed up (don't ask me why) and you might have other problems later. According to a hardware book I was reading, "PC Hardware in a Nutshell", this is a relatively straightforward business. They suggest contacting the manufacturer (website or whatever) and also possibly taking a look at http://www.ping.be/bios/ Debian user is probably not the right place if you want to pursue this line of enquiry (reinstalling bios) further, since this has nothing to do with operating systems. You might try alt.comp.hardware. Disclaimer: the above is far outside my field of expertise, so please don't treat these suggestions as anything more than suggestions. Sincerely, Faheem Mitha

RE: Takin' the plunge...
I'm was in a similar position a year or so back. I used Red Hat for a while and I must say the install for Red Hat 7.1 is lovely! Now I'm using Debian Woody and am unlikely to go back. I think the Debian "philosophy" (for want of a better word) suits me better. As a new user I feel that there is more of an emphasis on getting a good basic understanding the OS without having to go into really esoteric minutia with Debian. apt-get is outstanding and the help on the mailing list has been in my experience the fastest and most accurate of any I've used. FWIW a friend of mine really likes Mandrake. Install and use, no sweat. If you've got the bucks or the bandwidth then you might want to get a few sets of CD's and have a little install party once a month or so. Use a distro for a while, talk to the people on each mailing list, then a month later blow it away and start over with a new one. See which one you really like. Good luck and have fun! I'm about to take the plunge into Linux, but my experience with dumb terminal-based Unix is over 20 years old. In the interim, I've been on Windows; a sometimes happy, but always frustrating and infuriating marriage of convenience and productivity-enslavement. Debian Linux was recommended to me by a friend, but (this is embarrassing to admit, as I feel like a newbie all over again) quite frankly, I'm confusingly overwhelmed at the different products now available. Debian, RedHat, etc. Everybody says theirs is the best, but they cannot all be correct. I don't particularly want to go back to the command line, but I do appreciate the minimalist approach of Unix, especially from a security standpoint. The best distro is the one where you can get help quickly. If you are comfortable with mailing lists, Debian is brilliant. If you like a good thick book, SuSE is hard to beat. If you can get the sysadmin at work to help out, chances are Red Hat will be your choice. In my case, I used a few distros, found that I was nowhere near the level of expertise where any distro would be a limitation and chose Debian because I like the idea of a volunteer community with its free software commitment and its constitution. I hope you like it too. Patrick
