mlterm problem

2002-09-01 Thread Cristi Banciu

Hi,

I installed the latest mlterm.deb from unstable and when I tried to
execute it it says: mlterm: relocation error: mlterm: undefined symbol:
fribidi_get_type... I tried to downgrade from unstable to testing or
stable, but I still get the same error. Any idea where is the error ?

Sorry if I am mailing to the wrong list!

swap confusion

2002-09-01 Thread Joerg Johannes

Hi list

I have just watched my system booting and noticed that my two
swap-partitions have different priorities:

Sep 1 18:30:12 blaubaer kernel: Adding Swap: 530104k swap-space (priority -1)
Sep 1 18:30:12 blaubaer kernel: Adding Swap: 530136k swap-space (priority -2)

As they reside on two different hard drives, it might be smarter to have
them both at the same priority, as they will be used "on a round-robin
basis" (from swapon(2) ). So let's go ahead and set the priority in
/etc/fstab with pri=PRIORITY, but wait... the man page tells me that
swap priority can have any non-negative value, but the above kern.log
tells me both partitions have a negative value. Could someone please
enlighten me what this is all about?

thanks
joerg

I used to need to put "ext3" before "ext2" in /etc/mkinitrd/modules.

Xfree86 problems with woody

I have recently installed Debian

tried going back
and using various different settings, like lower resolutions

and such, but
with no luck. Though I have enough experience with

FreeBSD and Linux
to get around, I am a newbie, and have no idea where

to go from here to
get it running.  I have been
searching various site for info,

but with no
luck.

Here are some system specs, in case it helps:

Pentium 4 1.4GHz

Intel D850GB board

Nvdia geForce 2 MX 400 64MB

I’ve also attached my XFree86.0.log with this

point

me in the right

script to search ebay?

2002-09-01 Thread Lance Hoffmeyer

Anyone have any idea how I can create a script that will search
ebay and put the results in a text file?

I thought of starting with links

links http://search.ebay.de/search/search.dll?MfcISAPI
Command=GetResult&query=Fernandez

but for some reason this puts links in the background and does not search.
It just goes to the search page?

No conditions have been imposed on Debian. Until a registered letter

Except that GPL'ed programs must not have such problematic patents problem.
The general discussion of GPL says this:

Finally, any free program is threatened constantly by software patents.
We wish to avoid the danger that redistributors of a free program will
individually obtain patent licenses, in effect making the program
proprietary. To prevent this, we have made it clear that any patent must
be licensed for everyone's free use or not licensed at all.

and in the terms and condition, it says:

  7. If, as a consequence of a court judgment or allegation of patent
infringement or for any other reason (not limited to patent issues),
conditions are imposed on you (whether by court order, agreement or
otherwise) that contradict the conditions of this License, they do not
excuse you from the conditions of this License. If you cannot distribute
so as to satisfy simultaneously your obligations under this License and
any other pertinent obligations, then as a consequence you may not
distribute the Program at all. For example, if a patent license would not
permit royalty-free redistribution of the Program by all those who receive
copies directly or indirectly through you, then the only way you could
satisfy both it and this License would be to refrain entirely from
  distribution of the Program.

So basically, because of the clarification of Thomson, the authors of mpg321
(or any other GPL mp3 players) or any distributors (Debian included) can no
longer grant you a license saying "you are free to use, copy, modify and
distribute your programs with or without a charge as long as the result
remains GPL", it is the obligation of the authors and distributors to
"refrain entirely from distribution of the Program". Well, perhaps Thomson
didn't have made the "allegation" yet, but that's the idea.

Regards,
Isaac.

dpkg -l xlibs-dev gives it "un" flag, on trying to install, there are
dependecy problems with xlibs X client library.
I could not find it in debian pototo cd 2.2 r5 1 & 3; so I have to
download it. Why it is not there is a mystery.

If it is not installed, how do you explain the following -

ldconfig -p |grep *Xext* gives follwoing-

lrwxrwxrwx1 root root 14 Apr 10 19:49
libXext.so.6 -> libXext.so.6.3

Re: XMMS and the new MP3 patent terms

2002-09-01 Thread David Wright

The XMMS people are probably right that they don't need to change
anything, because they are not selling XMMS.

Red Hat was right to remove MP3 players, because Red Hat is selling its
distribution.

Technically, Debian doesn't sell its distribution, so in theory Debian
shouldn't have to change anything.

But Debian does encourgage people to sell CD-ROMs of whatever is not in
non-free. If someone were to include an MP3 player on a Debian CD-ROM
and sell it, that person would be violating the MP3 licensing terms. As
a courtesy to those who sell Debian CD's, and to avoid any possibility
of being charged as an accessory to patent infringement, Debian should
put MP3 players into non-free and remind people not to sell CD-ROMs of
that archive.

D-Link has a bad habit of putting out cards with similar model numbers,
but using widely differing chipsets. Here is a list of the various
models in this area with their respective driver modules:

DE-530TX---> tulip.o (I would bet this is the one you want)
DFE-530TX   ---> via-rhine.o
DFE-530TX+  ---> rtl8139.o or 8139too.o

Check your NIC's chipset and select one of the above modules according
to the actual chipset you have. Insert this module into the kernel
using "modprobe X.o" command as root (where .o = driver module
being tried). If this works, then just add this module to the
/etc/modules file. It should be automatilly detected next time you
boot, AND it will work after the "modprobe" command.

Depending on your kernel version, you might find several different
"brands" of the tulip.o driver. On my 2.2.20 kernel here, there is a
"ng_tulip.o", a "old_tulip.o", a "tulip.o", and a "tulip_scyld.o"
located in /lib/modules/2.2.20/net/. You might want to try each of
these with the "modprobe" command until you get one that installs OK.

Cheers,
-Don Spoon-

So what? The xmms and mpg321 packages still cannot continue to stay where
it is now, and Redhat is 100% right in removing the xmms mpg123 module and
the mpg321 out of its archive.

Thomson: MP3 Licensing Same As It Ever Was
NewsPosted by timothy on Thursday August 29, @10:55AM
from the gosh-all-we-changed-was-some-words-and-stuff dept.
Thomson Multimedia is downplaying the recently reported change in the
licensing of patented MP3 technology as nothing more than a trivial,
semantic change. In a NewsForge report today, Robin ("roblimo") Miller
quotes a spokesman who denies that any change in the licensing terms
has taken place, "that Thomson laid down its licensing terms long ago,
and that if Thomson's terms are not compatible with the GPL today,
then they never were." The patent encumbrance of MP3 codecs has
worried Free software enthusiasts for a long time; if the recent
wording change represents no change in policy, it seems that they
really have been right all along. (NewsForge, like Slashdot, is part
of the sinister OSDN keiretsu.)

NIC card.

Would you give me any suggestion on how to find the NIC driver?
Thanks :)

USBDNET driver (for Sharp Zaurus SL-5500 sync)

2002-09-01 Thread Carl Fink

I've purchased a Zaurus. It's neat and all, but I can't sync it at work
(because their proxy software conflicts with Qtopia) and I can't sync it at
home, because apparently the stock Debian kernel (kernel-image-2.4.18-k7)
doesn't support the usbdnet extension. Is anyone syncing with a Zaurus on
Linux? Any advice?

No, I won't buy a wireless network just to sync.

executing command after dial-in

2002-09-01 Thread Jochen Kächelin

I put the following in /etc/ppp/ip-up.d/homeip:

lynx -dump http://homeip.php

It will execute a small php-Script which stores my dynamic IP
from my provider in a MySQL-Database so that I know my homeip.

But the script does not execute.

When I execute it from the shell with ./homeip everything works
fine!! I connect to the internet with pon dsl.provider (German DSL).

Any suggestions?

Basically, the admin password of the unit is available in plain-text if you

Supposedly you can only fiddle from the ethernet side of the device, but I

Yes, and it works well. I have one. The problem is that you have to be
able to FIND the unit in order to configure it, and it comes up using DHCP
to get its IP address. I usually arp for it... I know its MAC prefix so
it's not hard to find. It also doesn't switch IP's unless it loses power,
so I just have it bookmarked. :)

I don't remember whether or not it can be configured to use a static IP or
not... I no longer have a Windows box with which to run its utilities, and
the manual is for the "stupid" firmware it came with, rather than the
web-enabled that's in it now. The web interface provides no way to define
a single IP for it to use. I do note that there's a later firmware
(3.2.31) on D-Link's website replacing what I have in mine now (3.2.28)...
I have no idea if it provides anything new since D-Link of course doesn't
publish changelogs.

D-Link provides a "kickstart" utility that goes out and does discovery to
find the unit, but of course, that's another Windows utility.

> Of course, you have to use a windows computer to load the firmware...

Well, it's tftp to the AP that loads the firmware... I watched it with a
sniffer when it uploaded the new firmware last time and figured that much
out. I suppose it wouldn't be all that hard to decipher exactly how to
talk to it... if it weren't the only one I had at the moment, maybe I'd
risk killing it.

Enough Windows machines running around in the world that it's really not an

Russell <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> [2002-09-01 15:40:58 +1000]:
> I might have gotten somewhere initially if i hadn't have
> used those square [] brackets.

A couple of gratuitous comments concerning the scripting plus the
helpful comments which were posted. I can't help but to say
something. I know, I know, I need therapy.

1. Using `` is the same as $() except that the $() are prefered since
you can nest them without needing to do crazy quoting. The quoting
in general inside of $() is slightly better. All modern shells
support $(). The old Bourne shell does not.

2. The 'if' executes a command. The '[' is a command. Therefore if
you can use the return code of a command directly it is ever so
slightly more efficient since you have one less command.

if grep -q foo /path/to/file; then

   is better than

 if [ -n "$(grep foo /path/to/file)" ]; then

3. You can negate the return code easily using '!'.

 if ! grep -q foo /path/to/file; then

   is better than

 if [ -z "$(grep foo /path/to/file)" ]; then

4. When using test you should always quote your test case. This
following case is bad since if the grep does not produce something
then you get a syntax error from test. But if it does produce
something then you don't. Coding with data dependent failures is
   always to be avoided.

 if [ -n $(grep foo /path/to/file) ]; then # poor syntax, unreliable

5. Different shells treat pipelines differently. IIRC it used to be
with the old Bourne shell the return code is the return code of the
last command to exit and not the last command in the pipeline.
Which can make for subtle errors that are hard to debug. I don't
know if this is a concern with modern shells but I have been
avoiding those cases for ten years.

Concerning ppp: In both idepci and compact there is a very nice
ppp configure program that leads you through the setup of ppp.
For almost all ISPs, choose PAP authorization, and it will set it
up. It sounds to me as if you have it setup to try two way passwords.
This is a special paranoid authorization mode which you use if you
are worried that someone will tap you phone line and pretend to be
your ISP and fake you into giving your password. Review carefully
your answers to questions to see if you have mistakenly choosen
this. Of course, if you did mean to choose this, you have to do
some extra negotiation with your ISP about the 'wrong way' password.
Look for pppconfig.

Also, during install look for an alternative set that is something
like 'set kernel boot parameters' and insert 'hd?=ide-scsi', where
? is a letter a,b,c, or d, depending which /dev/ is your CDwriter.
For writing you don't need an entry in fstab for your writer, but
you do need cdrecord and mkisofs, both are debian packages. If you
use your writer as a reader of CDs, you will have to configure fstab
and as if you CD device were a SCSI device. You will have no
problem with cd-rw, if you are lucky enough to do it right the first
time.

It is a system for registering information about documents installed on
the system and allowing programs like the GNOME help browser to access
them.

> Why does it burp noise every month?

scrollkeeper changed upstream to output more information by default and
to provide a -q option to disable this verbosity. I think the maintainer
forgot to add -q to the cron job to go along with this change.

I had to "go for it" with less certainty than would have been

And I can't remove it or it will also want to remove galeon-common and
therefore galeon-common. But interestingly not mozilla. I would be
happy it if removed everything else since I use fvwm and not gnome.

I will manually disable it unless there is an overwhelming reason not
to do so. I hate gratuitously noise cron jobs like this package.
Multiply this across many machines and it equates to a mail bomb

The main problem here is that the "auth" config command is somewhere in
your pppd configuration files. See "man pppd" for more info. In the
default Debian install there will be a "auth" command in
/etc/ppp/options, which is OK. This is there so your box can act as a
"dial-in" ppp server. If you used the "pppconfig" program to configure
your dial-out, then another config file is created that will overide
this command. It is usually located in the /etc/ppp/peers/provider file
(IF you used the default "provider" name for it when running pppconfig).

I would recommend you NOT change anything in the /etc/ppp/options file,
but instead look for an "auth" command in /etc/ppp/peers/provider and
change it to "noauth". Alternatively, you can re-run the "pppconfig"
command and it will create the proper file for you. I haven't had any
problems here using it this way. YMMV

Generally speaking, and IMHO, any of the install "flavors" such as the
"compact" kernel "flavor" are somewhat crippled. This is done to allow
the kernel to fit on a boot-floppy for the boot-floppy install, and many
of the modules have been left out to save space on the disk. These
kernel "flavors" are tailored for specific install situations. You have
two options in this case...compile your own kernel, or get one of the
precompiled kernel-images as soon as practical. The pre-compiled
kernel-images tend to be a LOT more "generic". IF you get your PPP
link working, then it is probably easier and faster to just obtain a
pre-compiled kernel-image from one of the Debian sites.

It is hard to determine from your info exactly what the problem is with
your DVD drive. Can you "mount" the DVD drive and browse through the
file system there. If so, then dselect "should" be able to see it. You
will probably have to manually mount the DVD drive before using dselect.
If this still doesn't work, I don't have a clue

You are correct about needing the scsi "drivers" for your CD-writer.
This is an entire subject in itself, and I would recommend you
concentrate on getting your PPP link up first and address this later, as
you indicated... Some more info on your hardware setup would be quite
helpful.

Cheers & Good Luck!

- donno why it wont "stick" -- maybe something
wrong with /etc/raidtab or wrong partition type
for /dev/hdg ??? ( should be fd ( raid autodetect )
or something like it ( fdisk, cfdsisk, ... )

- if its based on bios, hw raid ignore everything

need any of these commands/files

You need to edit your /etc/ppp/options file an have the option noauth (i think
it is commented out by default). Also make sure there is no 'auth' option
somewhere else in the file.

PPP asks my ISP for password

2002-09-01 Thread Anna Lawless

Having finally got what I thought was a working box, I can't dial
out. Whichever method I use, I either can't connect to my ISP or
the connection is refused by my box.
I type 'pon', having set up ppp in the normal Debian way. Nothing
happens. I'll go back into it to try to find the log message.
I can dial out with kppp, but as soon as I'm connected pppd dies,
with the message 'cannot obtain a password for this IP address'.
Obviously I can't get a password from my ISP and I've searched
everywhere to try to find out which file it's in.

I attempted to add a pppuser account, in the hope that would solve
the problem. But I got a segmentation fault so that didn't work.

Finally, I have Woody with the vanilla kernel. I installed from
DVD, seemed easier than seven cds. But when I try to add packages
using dselect it exits with a 'unknown fs type' error. IsO is
supported, I can read from the drive.

Would the compact kernel provide better support for a cd-writer
and a dvd drive? The DVD was recognised and added to fstab
automatically, although I did have to specify it was on /dev/hdd
first, but the cd-rw drive I had to manually enter in fstab. As
cd-writers use scsi emulation, could I have problems there.

I apologise for showering this list with questions. I'm not coming
straight from a microsoft environment, but I have become
accustomed to Mandrake, which does most configurations
automatically and normally detects hardware and adds kernel
modules with no problems. I haven't had a linux box that didn't
'run out of the box' since Mandrake 7.0 which had so many problems
with my then graphics card I became an x windows set-up expert.

Oh well, solving problems is the best way to learn. I've only
installed Woody three times so far, and didn't get it to run until
the last installation. But without being able to reach my ISP
(plain modem dial-up, nothing else available) it's not much use.

Your suggestion

> /usr/sbin/gpm -m /dev/psaux -t autops2 -Rps2 -M -m /dev/input/mice -t
> imps2 -Rps2

was close but it got me on the correct track. The /dev/gpmdata has to be
written to in a format compatable to both mice so that it can be read by
both mice, however an XF86Config-X protocol has to be identified that
will work for both mice. The -Rps2 wouldn't work for both mice but -Rraw
and the -t ps2 was compatable so

 /usr/sbin/gpm -m /dev/psaux -t ps2 -Rraw -M -m /dev/input/mice -t
  ps2 -Rraw

with, in XF86Config-4

Option "Protocol" "PS/2"

works fine with your suggested GPM_MOUSE

Thanks very much!

This discussion was on the list before. Search the archives for "A Note
from the LILO Developer on Warnings" (date is 2002-05-27). To make it
short, you can suppress it with -w and it shouldn't be harmful.

unimportant stuff and forget everything I need for exams?

mailman and courier-mta

Has anyone been able to get mailman to work with courier-mta?

I have been trying for the past couple of days to get them to work, but
I am having trouble getting courier to see the aliases. The error I am

My alias file looks like:

test-admin: "|/usr/lib/mailman/mail/wrapper mailowner test"

Any idea?

Please read previous mail in the thread.

This is not a US patent. This is a European patent. For MP3, the US/EU
distinction is a red herring -- Frauenhofer has the same rights in both.

this second setup is good to start from, as it already works in console
imho, the way you want to use gpmdata is wrong. it is one fifo, and you
repeat two different signals through it. my guess would be to repeat both
mice through gpmdata, but in the same protocol. X won't even notice the
actions come from two different mice, so you'll only need one
"inputdevice" section. you might try a config like this:

/usr/sbin/gpm -m /dev/psaux -t autops2 -Rps2 -M -m /dev/input/mice -t
 imps2 -Rps2

Section "InputDevice"
 Identifier "GPM Mouse"
 Driver "mouse"
 Option "CorePointer"
 Option "Device""/dev/gpmdata"
 Option "Protocol" "PS/2"
 Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true"
 Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

Section "ServerLayout"
 Identifier "Default Layout"
 Screen "Default Screen"
 InputDevice "Generic Keyboard"
 InputDevice "GPM Mouse"
EndSection

just guessing, but you might give it a try
good luck,

I found this doing a google search on the error message, from a Suse
list:

"The first warning(0X13) is that Lilo is checking your BIOS for large
disk support. It should work anyway. You can check if your BIOS is ready
for an upgrade.

The second(empty map) can be that there is a 0-byte file that messes up
Lilo's mapping, for example a 0-byte /boot/message file.

It could also be that you have an empty initrd RAM disk. If you have
deleted
what is in initrd, you should run the command 'mk_initrd' to correct
this.

Check with the command: lilo -t -v -v -v -v -v for more verbose output,
and also check in /boot to find the 0-byte file.

Regards,

Jostein "

I'd like to have both mice working with gpm and X. My gpm and X relevant

Using a laptop (Gateway9550) with its builtin mouse, and a USB mouse

Sound card driver for CM87389(rev 10)

2002-09-01 Thread Paul E Condon

I am working on getting sound set up on this Woody computer.
I got a sound card from Frys and plugged it in.
lspci says it is C-Media Electronics CM8738(rev 10).
I suspect that I need the cmpci.o modules, that appeared
when I was installing the vanilla Woody. But I couldn't
get vanilla to handle my CD reader in a way that I understood,
and I have installed the compact version of Woody, which
I can make work for both my CD reader and writer (separate
devices hdc and hdd, respectively).

But compact doesn't include cmpci.o

Where can I find it? What package must I load to get it to
show up in /lib/modules/... ?

Or am I totally misunderstanding? I have never done sound,
so am ignorant of even the most basic sound info. I read
various howto and think I understand, but then when I try,
it doesn't work.

TIA

I'd be curious to hear the answer to both questions, although having
seen the warning several times myself, I don't think it's serious -
doesn't seem to have affected my system anyway...(FLW)

Hope this is not serious. I have plenty of problems without clobbered
data on disk.

Even so, the unsubscribe address is also in the header. In fact, with
a graphical reader, such as KMail, just clicking View -> Show full
headers, and then clicking on that mailto address will generate the
message with Unsubscribe in the subject and all you have to do is click
Send and it's done

I understand from the linux-ntfs list that RedHat is not shipped with
ntfs support in the kernel (or maybe its broken). So you probably
could use RedHat, if you were willing to rebuild the kernel. Of
course, I like debian fine.

Also, I'm not sure if all XP disk formats are supported by linux,
particularly the server variants.

Same thing happened to me. I just uninstalled and re-installed logcheck,

apt-get remove --purge logcheck logtail
apt-get install logcheck

Worked beautifully for me.

Need help package ownership problem

2002-09-01 Thread Ross Boylan

I am unable to apt-get dist-upgrade because logtail and logcheck are
fighting over the same file. The package owner suggested using

dpkg-divert --package logtail --add --rename /usr/share/man/man8/logtail.8.gz

but as you can see below, it gets removed before it can help. Can
anyone suggest how to proceed?

Preconfiguring packages ...
(Reading database ... 165764 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace logtail 1.1.9.3 (using .../logtail_1.1.9.4_all.deb) ...
Removing `diversion of /usr/share/man/man8/logtail.8.gz to
/usr/share/man/man8/logtail.8.gz.distrib by logtail'
Unpacking replacement logtail ...
dpkg: error processing /usr/var/cache/apt/archives/logtail_1.1.9.4_all.deb (--unpack):
trying to overwrite `/usr/share/man/man8/logtail.8.gz', which is also in package
logcheck
Errors were encountered while processing:
 /usr/var/cache/apt/archives/logtail_1.1.9.4_all.deb

I am basically running testing, but installed logtail 1.1.9.3 from unstable
because of similar ownership issues.

Thanks.

Have a look at /usr/share/doc/raidtools2/ "The Software-RAID HOWTO
6.1 Recovery from a multiple disk failure". Yesterday I repaired
one of my raid devices succesfull. This should help! Make a backup
of your partition before! I don't have that much experience to know
wether it works in every case. I made one but didn't need. Better as
the other way round!

/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lXext

2002-09-01 Thread Dr. Sachin Kale

Hello

I am trying to compile examples given in qt2-doc package, even though
the directory containg libs is specified as -L/usr/X11R6/lib while
linking I get the above error.

ldconfig -p |grep *Xext* gives follwoing-

lrwxrwxrwx1 root root 14 Apr 10 19:49
libXext.so.6 -> libXext.so.6.3

In the /usr/X11R6/lib ls -lF *Xext* gives -

lrwxrwxrwx1 root root 14 Apr 10 19:49
libXext.so.6 -> libXext.so.6.3
-rw-r--r--1 root root44456 Feb 12 2001 libXext.so.6.3

I am stuck here ; if those libs are there & they are recognised by
ldconfig why I am getting that error. I had also specified the path by
using -L/usr/X11R6/lib. Still this problem is there.

Pls help me with this one.

And kindly cc me the replys.

Thanks.

Re: XMMS and the new MP3 patent terms

2002-09-01 Thread Balazs Javor

Hi,

I've missed a couple of messages in this discussion, so sorry
if this was already mentioned before...

I'm not sure whether the administrative overhead makes this worth it,
but did it occure to someone, that somebody could sell the mp3 plugin
for XMMS or other players for a nominal fee of say USD 1, and then
pay the 75 cents to Thompson?

I know we all prefer free software, but if somebody has a larger
harddrive worth of mp3 collection then I'm sure the USD 1 is worth it.

Or otherwise agree with Thompson on a licence that would state that if
someone wants to use the player, then he needs to send a check about
USD 0.75 to Thompson :)

cheers,
Balazs

I think that's exactly what the XRender extension is supposed to do. It
works fairly well, but it does apparently still work with a snapshot to
create transparency. I don't know enough about the X11 protocol to say
anything definitive, but I think, part of the problem is that hidden
parts of the desktop are just not transmitted for a redraw which would
be necessary for true transparency to work.

Another problem that's rather serious is the question "what for". IMHO,
that's the real problem hampering the development of such gimmicks.

The "-A ACCLIST" option might help, it accepts shell wildcards.

If you need regular expressions, have a look at pavuk.
This is a tool similar to wget and has lots of options.
If they still don't meed your needs, you can even plug in your own
scripts to decide for each URL seperately whether it should be
downloaded or used for recursion.
Also, it offers flexible renaming without breaking links (-fnrules
option). You can use the MIME type to set the file extension, although
this feature seems to be somewhat experimental.
I haven't tried the advanced options myself yet, I learned about them
from reading the manpage.

Cheers,
Mirko

True transparency (like that in OSX) has nothing to do with the WM itself,
it's an X11 issue. i don't know where it stands as of now, but i know it's

My guess to the real transparency is example, take a sound player and
play music so that there is as counter counting down. Move to so that it
is just above your 'K' or gnome foot, and then open the menu. You will
probably notice the time stopped ticking...

Real transparency is when they dont take a snapshot of the area on
screen that will be used when a menu opens and fade it with the menu to
be shown.

Hi Alvin,

I've never heard of "hotswapadd", did you mean "raidhotadd" ?

I also have raid-1 problems. raid-0 gets started fine, but raid-1
starts in degraded mode, using only hde. (started after I had to
rebuild the partition table on hdg)
I can manually raidhotadd /dev/md? /dev/hdg?
which restores the arrays fine, but it doesn't 'stick'. I have to
raidhotadd after every boot.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Patrick.

I thought that Rasterman was working on this, and that the latest version

I downloaded and burned a KNOPPIX CD this past week (it is way cool, btw
- higly recommended for demo-ing Linux and for emergency OS needs, like
for testing Windows-based PCs if you can't get hardware/network working
or you need to save files to the network on a hosed Windows system,
etc); I noticed that the KDE3 "K" menu had what I understand to be true
transparency; at least it was the same type of transparency I've seen on
Macintosh OS/X.

FYI.

hey tom...here's a partial solution to your problem - i've used it quite
extensively and actually, it's saved me from using an 'f2' type command:

http://packages.debian.org/stable/x11/wmbutton.html

it's a really sweet dock-app that let's you configure 9 click-able buttons -
each with left/right/middle click configs so you actually have 27 choices
built into a little customizable dock-app.

good luck in your quest!

Someone has to design how this fits in with the existing X11
protocol, probably develop an extension, then write the code,
and invent and document an API for this.

Then all applications that want real transparency probably need to
be rewritten to take advantage of this.

That's not something you do in a day. In fact, it's probably
not something you can do in a year.

Usually indicative of a bad protocol setting in either
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 or /etc/gpm.conf, or both.

The protocol you probably want is "imps2" in /etc/gpm.conf, and "ImPS/2"
in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.
NOTE: You may not be running gpm, in which case you can ignore the info
about /etc/gpm.conf..

No; XF86Config-4 provides for two mouse settings, I suppose to account
for those times when you might switch mice, like from a built-in on a
laptop to an external. This shouldn't cause any problems.

How can I use RPM in debian - 3.0

2002-09-01 Thread damar thapa

Hi,

I am trying to install hpbuilder-4.0-1.i386.rpm (trial
version) in debian 3.0.

When I did 'rpm -ivh hpbuilder-4.0-1.i386.rpm', I get
the following message:

error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - No such
file or directory(2)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

Seems, db3 package has to be installed? When checked
in the debian site, there is only db3-doc package, but
not db3. Where can I find it, if necessary, of course?

What about /var/lib/rpm? what does it mean?

Any pointers would be highly appreciated.

And, is there any kit/kits that can convert .rpm file
to .deb. I saw one in RPM howto from .deb to .rpm.

Thanks.

Damar

Ah... just forgot that the mpg321 package, etc., must be relicensed because
GPL states that in case of patent problem any distribution must be ceased.

Mutt adds Bcc: lines by default to the headers, and exim doesn't
strip them off by default .. so in that case, you'll end up with
Bcc: lines in the message.

Add this to your .muttrc:

set write_bcc=no

That should have been the default, oh well ..

Are you using gpm? (Have you use of the mouse in a tty?)
If so then you need to make your mouse device in XF86Config-4
/dev/gpmdata, and in /etc/gpm.conf make sure that repeat_type=raw

If that gives no joy post up your XF86Config-4 file.

As for editors - dangerous question! - doesn't emacs21 come with Debian
Junior?

But whatever you do DON'T abandon Debian again - this is curable!

Yup, this is fine. If you want to put your source somewhere besides
/usr/src, that's fine too. :-)

> 2. There's no .config file that I can find with my current kernel
> configuration - I don't want to do this from scratch if I can help
> it

The config file for your current kernel is probably in /boot/config-*;
you can copy it to .config in your kernel source tree and work from there.

> make xconfig

(Or 'make menuconfig', or even 'make config', any is fine though they
have different dependencies.)

> make -kpkg clean
> make -kpkg kernel_image modules_image

'make-kpkg', no space. When you do 'make-kpkg kernel-image', you'll
probably need to run it with the 'fakeroot' command, and provide a
--revision, like so:

  make-kpkg clean
  fakeroot make-kpkg --revision=custom.1 kernel-image
  fakeroot make-kpkg modules-image

Also, 'make-kpkg modules-image' doesn't do anything unless you have
module source packages (e.g. lm-sensors, ALSA, openafs, ...) installed
under /usr/src/modules (or $MODULE_LOC). It's safe to skip this step
if you don't need to run it; 'make-kpkg kernel-image' will build the
modules you've selected in the main kernel configuration.

> dpkg -i kernel_image modules_image
>
> to build and install the kernel???

Yup, sounds good.

> But like I said, I'm confused...(and scared!!! lol) As a newbie to
> Debian, should I just use the standard patch method until I'm more
> comfortable with the new stuff, or is it quite easy to get into it and
> do it the 'right' way??

IMHO building kernels with make-kpkg is easier (and saner) than using
the instructions that come with the kernel. One big advantage: if you
screw it up and really really want the new kernel off of the system,
you can just 'dpkg --remove' it. (And similarly, if you're building
up a nice collection of a half-dozen old kernels you never use, it's
easy to get rid of them.) If you do want to install kernel modules
distributed in other Debian packages, make-kpkg is the best-supported
way to do this.

Not necessarily. If it is not legal to distribute the package at all

SSL chat site?

2002-09-01 Thread Michael D. Crawford

Friends,

I would like to explain to someone who is unable to browse certain web sites how
he can do so by using some software which is currently under beta test by a
certain group of people who have a fondness for deceased bovines.

I'm not sure my friend has access to any software that will enable us to discuss
this privately, which we will need to be able to do so I can get him set up
without anyone objecting.

But very likely he has an SSL-enabled web browser. If there are a site where we
could chat back and forth by pasting text or HTML into a form that was encrypted
to and from the server with HTTPS, we could talk privately.

Likely he'd later be able to help out other people who are having trouble
viewing these same web sites.

Are there any sites like provide SSL-protected chat? It would also be best for
the server to forget our text when we're done.

I'm afraid I'm not (yet) in a position to set up a server of my own, or I'd do
it myself.

I could pay a reasonable amount to do this with a commercial site.

One can chat in the forums at sourceforge in SSL mode. The conversation would
be made public even though the transmission of the text would be private, but
likely that would be OK, if neither of us identified who he was. Unfortunately,
sourceforge is one of the sites he is unable to access. I cannot fathom why.

Yours,

Mike

Re: XMMS and the new MP3 patent terms

2002-09-01 Thread Sami Dalouche

Why not just do as linus said : "let's not care about patents until they
bring problems."
You host everything in europe (still no patents..), and let's think about
that again
when europe enforces patents.

Sam
PS: I don't want to start a troll, I just feel that free software gets
threatened by US
patents and the only way to get rid of this problem is by ignoring it...

you don't need the device3dfx-source package with xfree4. your
xfree86config-4 should contain something like that:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Voodoo3"
Driver "tdfx"
EndSection

Section "Module"
Load"dri"
Load"glx"
[...]
EndSection

Section "DRI"
Mode0666
EndSection

when you start x, the log should show some tdfx-infos.

you need to have libglide3 and xlibmesa3 installed. if you do a
glxinfo it's output should look like that:

name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.2
server glx extensions:
GLX_EXT_visual_info, GLX_EXT_visual_rating, GLX_EXT_import_context
client glx vendor string: SGI
client glx version string: 1.2
client glx extensions:
GLX_EXT_visual_info, GLX_EXT_visual_rating, GLX_EXT_import_context
GLX extensions:
GLX_EXT_visual_info, GLX_EXT_visual_rating, GLX_EXT_import_context
OpenGL vendor string: VA Linux Systems, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Voodoo3 20010501 x86/MMX
OpenGL version string: 1.2 Mesa 3.4.2
OpenGL extensions:
[...]

everything should work now (hopefully).

hope that helps.

I'm trying to export a variable so that i can see what it was
set to at that point in the script. What would be an easy way
to do this, without using "source ./script" ? I don't want to
use 'source', because i'd have to remove numerous exit statements,
to prevent killing the current shell.

you might be right. have a look at the config. it is mostly
self-explanatory, if not do a man XF86Config-4.

perhabs posting your xf86config-4 and the logfile might help others to
help you.
