Make applications remember their positions and sizes

2002-10-10 Thread Lacoste (Frisurf)

I am tired of having to redimension abiword Xemacs and the like each
time I run them. I know I can specify the applications to start
maximized using Window Maker but that is not enough flexible for me.
I used to modify the .XResources, but I was wondering if there was some
kind of easier way built-in Gnome, so that these settings get
automatically kept for each application.

Is there something like that available?

Troubleshooting Mozilla

2002-10-10 Thread Mark Seven Smith

I accidentally visited a website that gave a bunch of pop-ups (I typed in the
wrong URL), and blew Mozilla away. when I re-loaded, I wanted to delete any
cookies it left, but I cannot access the "Preferences" under the "Edit" menu.

Any suggestions?

I can access the mail client, and the "Mail & Newwsgroup Account Settings" but
if I try to access "Preferences" the browser window disappears! (Along with the
Mozilla mail as well). Mozilla just completely dies. I can re-load Mozilla,
but I cannot ever get into the Preferences now.

Help! :-) Thanks in advance,

Re: Can't access 1 IP address on Lan

2002-10-10 Thread Alvin Oga

hi ya curtis

do my silly question is.. where is the machine called 10.0.1.1
that does not reply to pings ??
- if you know where 10.0.1.1 is... do the same set of commands
again ( route -nv, ifconfig -v, ipchains -L, etc

- the 10.0.1.1 machine should be able to ping itself
and should be ble to ping the local LAN and outside world

i am not 100% sure... but you might wanna turn off "null ipchains" rules
or at least have it pass all up ..

am assuming this is NOT the firewall and if it is... you're missing
all of the fw rules

1) Are you sure you do not have a tape already in the drive?
2) Look at the drive manual, flashing lights usually signal something.
Possibly in this case, you need to run a tape cleaner through your tape
drive

yes, the name is in /etc/hosts. in addition to that when the system

Re: 2 NIC, 2 Gateway

2002-10-10 Thread david hong

what nate said is closest to what i am asking for.

my network is a bit tricky.

the linux box eth0 is connecting to internet.
the eth1 is connecting to one of the VLan.

what i am trying to achive is to do a portforwarding
for smtp to a different lan which is not
the 192.168.0.0 network.

i hv tried the 2 gateways setting, so far no luck.

postfix + cyrus-sasl2 smtpd auth failed!!!

2002-10-10 Thread asho

hi...every debian users

Some days ago , I set up my mail server with postfix + sasl2.

I can easily use them with the sasldb methond.

Yet now I want to use the other method such as the getpwent or shadow.

So I edited the /etc/default/saslauthd with the strings

START=yes
MECHANISMS=getpwent

and postfix with the setup strings

smtpd_sasl_auth_enable = yes
smtpd_sasl_security_options = noanonymous
smtpd_sasl_local_domain = $myhostname
broken_sasl_auth_clients = yes
smtpd_recipient_restrictions =
permit_sasl_authenticated,permit_mynetworks,check_relay_domains

then I restarted the saslauthd and postfix.

When I tried to send some mail through the mail server , It came out the
password dialog.

I did typed the correct password but the server said wrong...

I am confused...

So I rewrote the saslauthd with the option MECHANISMS=shadow.

However I still couldn't send any mails.

Can someone give me some advice to solve the problem.

My packages were listed below

ii postfix 1.1.11.0-3A
high-performance mail transport agent
ii postfix-pcre 1.1.11.0-3PCRE map
support for Postfix
ii postfix-tls 1.1.11.0-3TLS and
SASL support for Postfix snapshots
pi libsasl2 2.1.2-2
Authentication abstraction library.
ii libsasl2-digestmd5-plain 2.1.2-2
DIGEST-MD5 module for SASL
ii libsasl2-modules-plain2.1.2-2 Basic
Pluggable Authentication Modules for SASL
ii sasl2-bin 2.1.2-2 Programs
for manupulating the SASL users database

thanks for all

I agree. But I don't even know if this is what David was asking, as his
mail is very short and terse. If you want a dual gateway system (ie. two
DEFAULT routes) that your system balances between (like having two
ISP's), then have a read of the Advanced-Routing-HOWTO.

If however its just an internal lan (192.168.*.*) and the world at large
on the other interface, then the 192.168.*.* interface shouldn't have a
gateway entry at all.

More explanation of what your trying to achieve might be of aid here,
David.

You can setup ppp to setup the default route for you when the pppoe link
comes up. in /etc/ppp/options make sure the line "default" is not commented
out.

You can also put a script in /etc/ppp/ip-up.d/ that will be run whenever a
link comes up and the same for /etc/ppp/ip-down.d/ . You can use these for
adding extra routes if they're needed, or doing funky stuff as the link
changes.

I do not believe so, thats a different layer of networking(lower layer).

it *MIGHT* be possible if you setup a static ARP entry in your arp
cache, look at the manpage for "arp"

how does the ISP reccomend you manage the gateway? I can't imagine
an isp would do such a thing and not provide DHCP or something to
assign addresses. How do you determine what the IP address is when
you connect?

Ignore the error - it is about a malformed omf file in file-roller, and
is (AFAICT) completely harmless. Continue the upgrade as normal, even
though it spews garbage on your screen. There are already bugs about
this.

As for the Sources entry in your sources.list - I don't knwo what the
correct one for that site is - perhaps contact the person running it, or
google around?

it might go out eth1, I am not certain. but 192.168.0.11 is a locally
connected system which doesn't require a gateway to access. the
problem comes into play when your trying to route through the gateway
on the 2nd interface in my experience.

I'm trying to make the debian (sarg) imp packages to work, but as I've
found, there are a couple of very important bugs for imp as well as
php4-imap that just wont let me run imp.

Actually, on this ultrasparc box I'm running I can't even run apache after
installing php4-imap :(.

I'm still a little new to debian, so I'm still reading about the Policy, and
bug submit information, but I'll try to report/fix the problem ASAP.

Since we are using a distribution, probably the easyest way of building and
idiot proff documentation, is a. fixing the packages, and b. saying "just
apt-get install imp" :)

My adsl connection gets a different ip address each time it connects, this

Is there anyway to setup routes using MAC addresses or even eth1 instead of

Installing the kernel headers package will put the headers in something
like /usr/src/kernel-headers-2.4.18 or similar.

The NVidia Compiling script looks for them in the linux default
/usr/src/linux

Thus you should symlink one to the other...

ln -s /usr/src/kernel-headers-2.4.18 /usr/src/linux

Then the NVidia compile script should be able to find your modversions.h

So, if there is a host 192.168.0.11, and David attempts to ping it,
the packet may *not* go out eth1 (in this example)?

I hate to disagree with someone else on the list but my
experience would tell me that doing the above alone will
not be enough to have the box take advantage of 2 gateways.

I've worked for several hours trying such configurations to
no avail. one of my former co workers managed to get partial
functionality with dual gateways by using the 2.4.x kernel
and policy routing(none of my systems are 2.4.x and I have
never tried policy routing)

your free to try of course but I believe all packets will
go out the first gateway that is established. and don't
try changing the metrics on the routes, this has no effect
on them unfortunately.

you can search the list for my posts in the past(about a year
ago), probably has the word 'multihome' in it.

you'll also have to configure your system to re-write the source
address of outgoing packets from eth1, this can be done in
policy routing as well I believe. It's not easy, it wasn't
worth it for me.

It would be easier perhaps if you used a routing protocol
such as RIP or BGP and a software daemon to handle routing,
but that adds a whole new layer of complexity, my networks
use static routing.

Yes, your box will see that you are closer to certain networks and
route your packets out the closer interface.

Interestingly enough, neither is the case with TW's business lines (for
some obvious reasons, and some not so obvious). They *do* scan port 25,
but not necessarily for open relays (I was *ahem* running one for about
6 months before I figured out how to patch it up) -- in my case, I
simply started getting their service announcements sent directly to my
mail server admin account instead of my (unused) TW address... Felt a
bit invasive, but it was a smart move on their part, too, as that way I
was receiving their (usually after-the-fact) messages about the latest
worms, virii, etc. (The service announcements came both *before* and
*after* the open relay... they never bothered to let me know about it --
I found out when I started getting spam that originated on my own server
;-) )

I get the same error message. I realize now the reason I can mount a
data cdrom is that fstab has option of user for /dev/cdrom. When I
changed it to defaults I could not mount it.

I had woody on this machine before and had no problem, I copied fstab
from backup, so I must have had a problem mounting cdrom with the
previous install but had no problem with audio.

Am I wrong or should I be able to mount cdrom with defaults if I am in
group cdrom as long as /cdrom, /dev/cdrom, /dev/scd0, etc are group
cdrom.

Use ipchains to block those site to poke around you. They usually come
from few fixed IP. I block NNTP scan for ATTBI (Old @HOME cable)

For SMTP, use ISP smarthost for outbound.

For inbound, I get mail outside and use fetchmail to get them home.

on. Openoffice.org just wacked my system for no apparent reason.
Frustration isn't a good enough word in my opinion! The crashes still sound
like an alarming situation. Since the system crashed on both Mandrake and
Redhat, I would think there must be some kind of connection.

One thing that popped into my mind reading this paragraph is the ext3
filesystem. I have converted all my boxes to ext3 and it is wonderful! This
desktop computer doesn't die no matter what horrible things I subject it to.
My laptop on the other hand has locked up a number of times. It is nice not
having to endure the endless fsck's! It is very easy to convert your ext2 to
ext3 if you are interested (providing you didn't install it at install time).

No worries Chip. I see a few of these types of messages every now and again
on debian-user, and they are always a pleasure to read.

I am evaluating Mandrake 9.0 and Libranet 2.0 right now. I have old hardware
and a fried harddrive, so it is not the kindest box to play with. Libranet
(Debian based) installed after four harddisk time-outs that resulted in
system crashes. It is amazing how well that little distro runs on this
broken hardware! Mandrake never made it past the partitioning. The monitor
would blank right after trying to do a normal install or low-res install,
which left only a text install as the only option. So far, I'm not too
impressed with Mandrake .. Heehee. I hope to find another (not so dead)
harddisk to try it again with. Still, Libranet, with apt-get, was able to
endure the repeated crashes and still produce a working system--that's the
power of Debian I think!

I've only done it to stick in user manuals etc, but on my current (work)
machine I have to stick it in paint first anyway, because if I stick it
straight in word, it takes the last 5 or so RHS pixels and sticks them
on the LHS of the picture. Why? @#$% knows but I know if it was a linux
box I could work it out - in windows I just shrug and say "at least
there's a work around" :p
My new work around is to install the Gimp and use it to capture, at
least then I can save it to a small format like jpeg if I don't need too
much detail.

Barney

PS. God I wish I could use linux on my workstation here, if not for
cygwin/vim/gimp I'd go (completely) mad.

PPS. I just tried it and it doesn't have the problem any more... maybe
it was a different machine? bah! who cares.

Start with apt-get kernel-package. That will ensure you get all the
apps on which it depends. Read the kernel-package docs (in
/usr/share/doc/kernel-package). They're very straightforward.

Looking at your headers, you are sending from <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
but have reply-to set to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>. You need to make sure
you are sending the unsubscribe from the address that is subscribed, so
if you have <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> subscribed you will need to send from
that address, or you may be able to send a message from a different
address that explicitly asks to have <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
unsubscribed. I _think_ this can be done by sending a message like this:

To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: unsubscribe [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If this doesn't work there is also David's suggestion of using the web
interface.

HTH
Barney

PS. The other possibility is that you are subcribed to the digest, where
you get blocks of messages packaged into one instead of all of them
separately. If this is the case you need to send your unsubscribe
message to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Okay I installed kernel-package and did make-kpgk. The response I
recieved a message about not being in a top level directory ( I was at a
/) or make-kpgk was totally out of date. So I downloaded
kernel-headers-2.4.18-bf2.4. After that was installed I tried to make
install the nvidia driver and still got the error about modversions.h,
no file found or directory not existing.

New Debian User - Totally Impressed

2002-10-10 Thread Chip Rose

Greetings,

I just switched to deb3.0 from Mandrake8.0. I am beyond ecstatic with
it. The install was easy (used 7cds from Linux Central), user-friendly,
the defaults were acceptable even for a total beginner. I don't know a
whole lot about Linux even after my past several years of constant use -
the Redhat/Mandrake world has fogged my brain I guess. I've installed
and used Redhat 5.0, 5.1, 6.0, Mandrake 6.0 and 8.0 over the past few
years, and have been using Linux exclusively for that whole time.
Redhat crashed often, and was a mind-numbing puzzle to update RPM's and
figure out where things installed - nothing matched the Linux info I was
reading on the web. Mandrake was more graphical and easier - I tired of
puzzling over the thing - just wanted something stable, and I knew
(thought) that Linux was more stable and powerful than M$-Windows. But
despite its graphical ease, Mandrake crashed constantly! I thought it
was my flaky hardware (not!), and I despaired of using Linux. I had
often bragged to friends about how stable Linux was, how
resource-efficient, and how Linux users rarely had to turn their
computers off or reboot because of crashes. But it was practically a
lie! I was so embarrassed when my system would crash constantly, even
when no apps were running - yaaaghh!

I've been using Debian3.0 for 3 days now - fast and stable - tons of
packages that are easy to get and install. Already I've learned how to
start ppp from the console and how to do it via scripts
(chat/provider/pon/poff) - something I could never do in Mandrake/Redhat
- I normally just rely on kppp to do the job for me, and I never learned
anything in the process! Even rebooting my computer with Mandrake would
cause a kernel panic - I had to wait 5 minutes before turning my
computer back on or else Mandrake would freeze/kernel panic during the
boot. Doing a system halt would segfault under Mandrake! I couldn't
leave my computer on at the kdm logon screen - it would freeze the
entire system. Once I spent a long hour on the web creating an online
retirement plan with a lot of details, and then my computer just FROZE
UP and I lost everything! Yaaagh!! The list just goes on and on..
I could talk your ear off with it all.

Normally I wouldn't have dared to type such a long note without first
saving it, in case Mandrake would crash and I'd lose all my wonderful
typing. Sorry for abusing bandwidth and list etiquette with this long
email - I'm just on cloud nine because I'm finally using a REAL Linux,
and I can now truthfully say:
LINUX IS UNBELIEVABLY POWERFUL AND STABLE!
Debian Linux that is!

Thanks again for listening,

How do you send mail with Balsa? Do you use your MTA or any function
from within Balsa?

So the MTA is working at least locally.

My first guess is that you didn't set up your MTA correctly. I don't
use Exim, but I'd expect some question about local systems/domains and
a smart host or relay host. These would be things to look up in Exim's
documentation.

After boot up, before you 'ifdown eth0' what do you see with ifconfig?
Also, during the boot process you should see a line like "Configuring
network interfaces" followed by "done". Anything interesting in
between those two lines?

One more thing I'd try is 'ifdown -a' followed by 'ifup -a' to see if
that is any different (probably not, but heck, I'm just guessing)

This is in my sent box but I never saw it hit the list from this end.
One more try.

G

Installed amavis-ng and did the configs for exim.

Everything works fine (using ~/.procmailrc for final delivery) with the
 amavis stuff commented out.

Everything gets properly delivered to /var/mail/username if the user has
no ~/.procmailrc

However, when I uncomment my amavis sections in /etc/exim/exim.conf I
get the following error (and no mail delivery -- period):

 2002-10-09 17:08:02 Exim configuration error
director amavis: cannot find director driver "pipe" in line 278

The procmail stanza just above my amavis stanza uses "driver = pipe"
just fine (procmail stanza not listed here -- most of my config left out
because it's long and I haven't edited out any security related info. If
anyone needs the whole exim config file let me know and I will clean and
post it).

Here are the amavis sections from exim.conf

 ##
 # TRANSPORTS CONFIGURATION #

 Any ideas?

I use the stock 2.4.18 kernel.

I created a file called /etc/modutils/cdrw and in it I have

# First, get the ide-cd drive to not latch onto /dev/hdd
options ide-cd ignore=hdd
#
#
# Set up an alias for /dev/scd0 to load sr_mod
alias scd0 sr_mod
#
#
# Now get ide-cd followed by ide-scsi loaded before the SCSI drivers
pre-install sgmodprobe ide-scsi
pre-install sr_modmodprobe ide-scsi
pre-install ide-scsi modprobe ide-cd
#

and if you have not guessed it yet, /dev/hdd is my CD-RW drive. Run
update-modules to recreate the /etc/modules.conf file.

Noting in lilo or grub this way.

I tend to preload ide-cd and ide-scsi via /etc/modules because I turn
on DMA during my boot process.

BTW this is all just as the CD Writing HOWTO says to do things, but
for the Debian specific update-modules script.

Cheers!
Shyamal

I just installed it - it promptly segfaulted here. Xawtv and Zapping
work fine here, and while I'm running KDE due to a problem starting
Gnome sessions (even failsafe craps out while starting X/Gnome, which
has me suspecting that something is not well in my migration to Gnome
2,) I'm running zapping with great comfort on a desktop, channel hopping
just like any male :)

keep in mind there are several different ways to get time over the
network(not sure if they are all network time or not). On win32
I think I used to use an app called "atomachron" or something. it
was a free app, and worked well. but it was always a pain trying
to figure out what protocol to use(it had an option of 3-4-5 different
ones, I think all were different versions of NTP), then to decide
whether or not to use tcp or udp for the connection and then the
port. Eventually I learned to document what the specific configuration
was after having to do guesswork on half dozen different systems.

even on ntpdate, on some systems I have to do ntpdate -o 4
otherwise ntpdate spits back 'no suitable servers found for synchronization'

i think you can also synch against the 'time' service(called from
inetd/xinetd) instead of a specific time server(I did this for a long
time when I didn't feel like configuring ntpd), it works too but
requires a slightly different configuration(different port/protocol
version I think)

Mutt help, please

2002-10-10 Thread Lonnie Sutton

Although I have RTFM and looked at example .muttrc's, I am obviously
missing something since I can't get Mutt to send mail outside my
system. I am using woody, and as you can see from this mailing, I can
send mail from Balsa, no problem.

When I fetchmail, if comes in OK, and of course I can read it in Mutt.
I can send a mail to myself locally, and the from header looks OK, and
of course it is immediately there for Mutt to read.

When I try to send a mail through my ISP, the mail seems to go
somewhere, but never shows up when I fetch the e-mail from my ISP. Also,
when I look in the mailq it is empty, and when I check
/var/spool/exim/input it is empty as well.

So it would seem that Mutt is putting something in a header that causes
my sent mail to get rejected by my ISP, and it gets thrown
away.

Any suggestions, hints, or pointers to more reading would be
appreciated.

TIA

In 2.4.19 usb 2.0 is supported for cards using the NEC usb 2.0
chipset. This includes most of the cheap aftermarket cards. You need
to use the ehci driver (CONFIG_USB_EHCI_HCD). With my archos recorder
20 I get improved speed over usb 1.1, but nowhere near the specified
maximum. I suspect that this is due to a slow cpu (K6-350) rather than
the USB bus.

UPDATE: Relaying restrictions cont.

2002-10-10 Thread Curtis Vaughan

In addition to what I have written below:

It turns out I was wrong about those changes. In fact, it was still
relaying. Since then I made the following changes and now it seems to be
working more or less.

Changes:

smtpd_client_restrictions = check_relay_domains, reject_unknown_client
relay_domains = $mydestination, $virtual_domains
virtual_domains = domain1.com, domain2.com

So, now mail can be sent by anyone to either my domain or a virtual
domain, but to no other addresses. At least using a mail client and
telneting in, I always got a relay reject on any other addresses.

Nevertheless, can you believe this?

Leave that belief behind. You're using debian now! =)

A good backup strategy is always important, though, always. I think

Probably even simpler than you're imagining. Just grab your conf files
(they're listed in the packages' metadata); it's unlikely that you've
changed anything else.

perhaps back in the KDE 1.x days? I used to be a kwintv user
a couple years ago and remember reading on the website how the original
auther abandoned the project and it was not compadible with newer
QT or KDE(or both), so it went a long time w/o maintainence then someone
picked it up and started updating it again..

I don't know. My Windows System Admin says that Active Directory uses
ntp (and he questions whether Linux uses that or some other protocol),
but since my Debian box stopped working with it, I was just wondering if
Microsoft's ntp is just a tad tainted, like so many of their other
"industry standard" protocols.

At any rate, it's only an academic question, as I've pointed my Debian
box to a Solaris ntp server instead of the "official" campus
Windows-based server, and that satisfies my immediate need.

Thanks for the response!

Isaac,

I had this issue a week ago and a friend on irc kindly told me about xwd.
The easiest way of doing it is to run the command:

xwd > /path/filename.xwd

Then go and open that .xwd file with the gimp:

gimp /path/filename.xwd &

Edit as appropriate (canvas size etc)

then select file > save as and save it as a .jpeg (works best for me)

If a .jpeg file image is what I want all is fine. If not i'll use a program
called xnview (freely available from www.xnview.com) to convert the image.

Funny how some will use the absence of a package as a disadvantage of

That's right, I was forgetting to export the LANG variable so
everything was using the POSIX locale.

XF86 4.2.1 + Radeon == No valid mode found for this DFP/LCD

2002-10-10 Thread martin f krafft

[debian-x says it's about packaging... so I am posting here...]

I've been experiencing major problems with X ever since the 4.2.1
upgrade. This particular problem is on a laptop with a Radeon Mobility
M6 LY Video card running a custom 2.4.19+grsecurity kernel with the
'radeon' kernel module loaded. 'agpgart' is compiled into the kernel.

I am almost sure this has been discussed in the past, but I could not
find it in the archives. Thus I appreciate if you point me to a link
to prevent duplicate discussion.

The problem is here in the logs:

(WW) RADEON(0): Mode 1280x1024 is out of range.
Valid mode should be between 640x480-640x480
(EE) RADEON(0): No valid mode found for this DFP/LCD

X doesn't start until I enable the 640x480 mode (which is usually not
even included in XF86Config-4 -- no way I could work that way.
The configuration was not changed since X 4.1.0, where everything
worked.

The result is that I can start X at 640x480 (WOW, BIG LETTERS) but at
no other resolution, not even 800x600.

I can start into 1280x1024 when I use the "vesa" driver instead of the
native "radeon" driver, but then I loose a lot of performance, which
I don't want.

Do you have any idea on how this can be repaired?

Thanks!

Time Warner blocked 80 here but they are polite enough to scan 25 for
open relays. From the rejected messages in Exim it appears that if they
find one they will at least inform you before locking it down. (Messages
deleted so I can't copy the text. Appears to be roughly a monthly scan.)

using external VGA as separate display

2002-10-10 Thread martin f krafft

hi,

WinXP of all things allows you to control a laptop's external VGA
connector as a separate display, totally independent of the internal
LCD. Can this be done in XF86 (4.2.1 here, thanks Branden + XFTF!)?

The reason I ask is because I have an LCD that does 1400x1050 and any
lower resolution is just too fuzzy. And I also have an external
monitor that can do 1280x1024, but not 1400x1050. I prefer to work
with the external monitor as it's bigger and better in terms of
ergonomical placement. But I don't feel like restarting X to set a new
resolution every time I connect to the external monitor.
Alt-Ctrl-Numlock+ and Alt-Ctrl-Numlock- don't work (they produce crazy
patterns on the screen for all resolutions but the one I started out
with. Maybe that's a framebuffer issue.

It would rock if I could use the external VGA separately from the
internal one (it's a Radeon Mobility M6 LY driving this baby) because
then I could have a dual-headed setup, which would be incredible!

Any hints appreciated!

At worst your machine, and only your machine will collapse into a
nano-blackhole. At best it will suck the rest of the world in with
it. Better not take the chance.

As near as I can tell this was caused by the introduction of
privilege seperation in the new version of SSH. If I run with it on,
idled stops logging people off. If I turn it on, idled continues to
work.

Right. The drive should work with USB 1.1, although with
reduced performance. Any help on setting this up as a

USB2 definitely isn't in the stock 2.4 kernels (yet, if ever).
I think I saw, though, that it was in 2.4.20-ac??

Do you have /etc/securetty ?

It should contain your console devices (without /dev)
mine reads :

<>
console

# Standard consoles
tty1
tty2
tty3

# Same as above, but these only occur with devfs devices
vc/1
vc/2
vc/3

They go on to tty12,

Well, I was in Linux again today and I did a couple of things. Here is what
I did and the response I got, can anyone comment on this?

1) I installed "pump" upon the recommendation of a co-worker (using "apt-get
install pump", from the CD-ROM). But executing "pump -i eth0 --status"
yields the error message "Operation failed". So I must need to configure it
or something.

2) I changed the /etc/network/interfaces file to say

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

(without the indent) But then when I executed "/etc/init.d/networking
restart", it just hung for a while and said "Done". No IP address was
assigned, according to "/sbin/ifconfig".

3) I went back into Windows and tried the /release and /renew arguments to
"ipconfig". Here is the response I got:

H:\>ipconfig /release

Windows 2000 IP Configuration

Error: No adapters bound to TCP/IP are enabled for DHCP

H:\>ipconfig /renew

Windows 2000 IP Configuration

Error: No adapters bound to TCP/IP are enabled for DHCP

I'm pretty clueless at this point. Part (3) above suggests that DHCP isn't
even being used here, but I'm pretty certain that DHCP is indeed being used
by my company's network. What's the deal? Anyone have any advice? I
appreciate it.

Goodness, there was a thread on exactly this topic yesterday on debian-devel!
Someone wrote a nice howto that I won't give you because I forget the URL.

Essentially you write /etc/apt/sources.list as

deb http://mirror/debian unstable main contrib non-free
deb http://mirror/debian-non-US unstable/non-US main contrib non-free

deb http://mirror/debian testing main contrib non-free
deb http://mirror/debian-non-US testing/non-US main contrib non-free

deb http://mirror/debian stable main contrib non-free
deb http://mirror/debian-non-US stable/non-US main contrib non-free

Obviously the non-us and non-free are optional, and you may need to change the
paths slightly depending on your mirror.

The real magic happens in the (probably new) file /etc/apt/preferences

Package: *
Pin: release o=Debian,a=stable
Pin-Priority: 900

Package: *
Pin: release o=Debian,a=testing
Pin-Priority: 500

Package: *
Pin: release o=Debian,a=unstable
Pin-Priority: 300

Hopefully the person who wrote the howto will see this message and send you
the URL so you get a better description of why this is the way to do it.

Hi

I need the Dr. Scheme package for my teaching.

I run Woody, but notice that the only Dr. Scheme
package (the latest, 2.02) is in Unstable. Just
how unstable is DrScheme 2.02?

Can I safely install it from Sid's package into
my Woody, or am I asking for trouble? Should I
get the original source or Sid's source and compile?

Any words of encouragement or advice?

Just have a look at /usr/lib/menu/mplayer. Mine looks like this:

?package(mplayer):command=/usr/bin/gmplayer section="Apps/Viewers"

Then, try to re-run update-menus.

If that doesn't work or you really want to call mplayer (without the
gui) just drop on appropriate menu definition into /etc/menu (just read
the README in there) and re-run update-menus.

the best suggestion i can suggest is X -probeonly that will attempt
to auto detect everything. I suggest first creating /dev/mouse, if your
using a ps2 mouse something like:

cd /dev ; ln -s psaux mouse

I am not aware of some 'catchall' debian-specific utility. something
else that would help is if you told the list what video card you use.
if it's something like 810 or 815 or some other strange chipset it
may be more difficult then just X -probeonly or even xf86config. There
is a tool called anxious, which tries to do what you want, but last
time I tried it, it could only detect a few different cards. if your
using a nvidia card and want 3d acceleration you need to compile and
install the modules for it.

Me too, but MP2000s. Works like a dream, and kernel config was easy too.
The Tiger MP even came with a nice manual, though on the board itself some
of the capacitors got in my way when I was trying to clamp down the CPU
cooling fans, so I had to take care.

Trouble installing Xwindows on debian 3.0 (woody)

2002-10-10 Thread Srini Vasan
Title: Trouble installing Xwindows on debian 3.0 (woody)

Hi,

I am a debian newbie ( coming from the mandrake world)...
I am having trouble getting XFree86 to work correctly on my machine...When I run startx .. it crashes and xfree86config suggests running "SuperProbe" to get the right characteristics for my video card before re-running the config.

But I cant find SuperProbe on my system ( I did a search ) Is there a simple utility that I could run which will detect all the hardware and select the right options (like Mandrake does SO WELL)...

Thanks.

Never installed a mplayer - deb.But if you install it from source you
need to call it gmplayer to work with a gui. Just try that maybe it
works.

Prost,

Transparent access to DVD-RAM archives

Thanks very much, Nate - that's perfect. (-: I can now generate a good
exclude list with a simple Perl script.

A couple more questions for the list:

(a) Can I mount a compressed archive (e.g. from afio) as a read-only
filesystem somehow?

(b) Can I manipulate an ext2 FS on DVD-RAM on a low-spec machine? I know
that for actually burning DVD-Rs they sometimes want a faster machine.

then i'd use the 'text' feature of paint to type ontop of the graphic
and save it as a bmp(I did do this a lot, and still do to this day,
with gimp for example), see this tutorial i made for my mother about
the custom interface I setup for her laptop:
http://portal.aphroland.org/computer/

keeps the graphic as a graphic. now if theres a lot of stuff to type
about the screenshot thats fine, use a word doc. but most times I've
seen people do the above, was they just pasted it in, didn't type a word
and saved it, and emailed it off(they usually typed the words in
the email, if they typed anything at all)

Idled + SSH.

2002-10-10 Thread Petro

I've got 2 border machines running Debian Potato, and I recently (2
days ago) did a security update on it for the first time in 4 or 5
months.

On one of these machines, I also upgraded SSH.

Then Idled stopped working on that machine.

So I have 2 machines that are effectively identical except for the
existence of the new SSH.

One is running SSH Version OpenSSH-1.2.3, protocol version 1.5.

The other is running OpenSSH_3.4p1 Debian 1:3.4p1-0.0potato1, SSH
protocols 1.5/2.0, OpenSSL 0x0090603f

The latter one does not log out idle users.

Any clues about how to get Idled to work with the newer SSH?
Otherwise it's regression time.

What if the purpose of the screenshot was to illustrate a piece of text that
you're concurrently working on? That seems like a reasonable thing to do.

Thanks for the pointer. For others with the same problem, I changed
XF86Config-4 as follows, restarted my X session, and had my old settings
back:

- Option "XkbLayout" "us"
+ Option "XkbOptions" "altwin:meta_win"

You could try this:

apt-get install discover
apt-get install mdetect

XFree86 -configure

This will build a XF86Config file based on the autodetection of
hardware. It works nicely. You may have trouble with the mouse
detection, so if you have problems check that part of the config file
that's generated.
