installation problem on Dell OptiPlex

2003-06-18 Thread hetzel.devel
Hi,
I got a problem during installing debian on a Dell Optiplex L60.
I startet the installation with the disks (Kernel 2.2.20, version: comcat, woody), but
at the point of installing the networkdriver i stoped.
Where can I get a driver for the Intel 8255X 10/100/1000 Onboard-networkdevice?
How can I install the driver during my disk-installation ?

Thanks Haiko

You can refer to the following link for some preferences settings.
http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto/ch-apt-get.en.html
If you don't want *any* packages from unstable then comment out that
line from /etc/apt/sources.list

howto use defaults/preferences to keep to testing ???

2003-06-18 Thread Michael D. Schleif
What do I *not* understand about apt defaults and preferences? I was at
woody/stable for a year. Recently, I've taken the plunge and upgraded
to testing, and I think that I am configured to stay at testing:

# cat /etc/apt/apt.conf
APT::Cache-Limit12582912;
APT::Default-Release"testing";

# cat /etc/apt/preferences
Package: *
Pin: release a=stable
Pin-Priority: 1000

Package: *
Pin: release a=testing
Pin-Priority: 1000

Package: *
Pin: release a=unstable
Pin-Priority: 0

However, I just did this:

# sudo dselect update

And, I get this result:

# sudo apt-get upgrade
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
The following packages have been kept back
  aptitude kdeartwork synaptic w3m
13 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 4 not upgraded.

abiword-gtk was removed some time ago, in favour of the plain abiword
package (only in unstable at the moment for various reasons). Try
installing that instead.

xv video output is no good

2003-06-18 Thread Roberto Sanchez
All I get when I try to use xv output is a blue screen (I have tried the same
file in mplayer, xine, and ogle). XFree86 loads the xv extension on boot,
all the different utils say that its there and that it is supported, but I
always get the blue screen.

I have been able to solve the problem (somewhat) by playing the files in
mplayerusing direct graphics access to get good performance. The problem is
that I
have some media files from school (some courses are given by a professor that
is taped and then streamed on the net, which can also be downloaded as a single
file later on) that I need to be able to watch with good performance (i.e.,
not too jerky or too many frame drops) and still be able work on the computer.
That way I can take notes/whatever, which is impossible if I take over the
wholedisplay with DGA.

Can someone point me in the right direction on this?

Hallelujah! I just converted from RedHat to Debian, too. RedHat is
nice for beginners because you can get a system up and running for
experimentation quickly, but when it comes to actually tweaking things
into sanity, Debian does the job with style.

Thanks to everyone who helped me with *my* Debian issues!

Existing libraries not found

2003-06-18 Thread Patrick Wiseman
When I 'ldd' a particular executable, I get

libXt.so.6 => not found
libX11.so.6 => not found
libXpm.so.4 => not found
libm.so.5 => /lib/libm.so.5 (0x4000d000)
libc.so.5 => /lib/libc.so.5 (0x40016000)

followed by a bunch of unresolved symbols. The unfound libraries exist in
/usr/X11R6/lib, which is in /etc/ld.so.conf. The executable is almost
certainly an a.out (is there a way to tell?), while the libraries are
presumably ELF (I'm on a 'testing' box). Is there anything to be done?

Ring pattern based Dial in Server

I want to add dial in to my home Linux server, I only have one phone
line and an answering machine that picks up on the 4th ring. Can I set
my Debian laptop to dial up in a pattern lets "say ring, hungup ring
ring hangup, ring ring ring" then have my server say eureka thats for me
then answer be for the answering machine?

I have built dial in servers for office environments in the past with a
with pppd and adding lines like
"S2:2345:respawn:/sbin/mgetty ttyS2 -D /dev/ttyS2" to my inittab, But I
have not found any solutions to adapt this setup for my home use.

The server is running woody stable and the 2.4.19 kernel the laptop is
running sarge with kernel 2.5.69

gaim (libaspell15) conflicts with abiword-gtk (libspell4)

2003-06-18 Thread Benedict Verheyen
Hi,

it was a while ago that i upgraded and *poof*, a dependency problem
occured :) I run testing/unstable by the way.

I had upgraded without really noticing my abiword-gtk was removed
because of it's dependency to libpspell4 (0.12.2).
Gaim (0.64.2) depends on libaspell15 (>=0.50.3-1) while abiword-gtk
(1.0.2) depends on libpspell4 (0.12.2). libaspell15 and libpspell4
conflict.

How can i solve this and keep both programs working instead of just
gaim? I tried with aptitude but it resulted in a game of ping pong :)

Thanks for any suggestions or links

Yes: getting familiar with recompiling kernels etc.

You say that there's two features you need, and that the stock kernels
available to you only support one or the other. Sounds exactly like
the sort of situation in which one compiles a custom kernel. Especially
since the stock kernels have all sorts of hardware support that you
probably *don't* need.

See

http://newbiedoc.sourceforge.net/system/kernel-pkg.html

for a tutorial on compiling and installing kernels on Debian machines.

exim configuration for tmda

2003-06-18 Thread Jeff Penn
I'm having problems configuring tmda to run on Sarge with the default
exim install. I've followed instructions in the tmda manual except:

echo "|/path/to/bin/procmail -p" > ~/.forward

I left this file empty since procmail is specified in exim.conf by
default.

All mail ends up being passed to procmails $DEFAULT,

~/.tmda/logs/debug contains:
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/tmda-filter", line 53, in ?

  File "/usr/bin/tmda-rfilter", line 175, in ?
raise Errors.MissingEnvironmentVariable('SENDER')

Which appears to suggest exim is not passing procmail the required
environment variables. I have tried various changes including modifying
the procmail_pipe configuration in exim.conf without any success (such
as adding -p option to the command).

I've heard the same thing from other people, one had worked in a
graphics/printing company where they had lots of removable drives on
almost every machine because clients would send them stuff on syquest
cartridges, Zip disks, flopticals, and every other format known to man.
Once one of their Zip drives got the "click of death" they didn't stop
having problems until they replaced every single Zip drive and disk all
at once. After they made that connection they started throwing out
drives and disks at the first sign of trouble.

Iomega didn't go from being an also-ran in the removable storage
business to being the major player by making a great product. They did
it by making a cheap product and spending a lot of money on marketing
instead of good design or quality control.

Re: Kernel version 2.4

2003-06-18 Thread Nico Meijer
Hi Remon,

> Can anyone think of a solution? (I'm not familiar with recompiling
> kernels etc)

Learn how to compile and deploy your own kernel.

I've made a habit of making that the second thing I do on a newly
installed box. Configuring sudo being #1.

It's not hard and well documented. Plus, the machine becoming a
firewall, you don't really want the extra baggage a generic kernel
brings with it. A generic kernel, of course, has to support most regular
hardware as it's for general purpose. Most people don't run 'general
purpose' Linux boxen, I guess.

Why would you want USB, audio, SCSI and/or AGP support if it's just a
simple IDE machine with two NICs? [I'm not saying it is, just trying to
make a point; I don't have a clue about that RAID controller you're
talking about]

Plus, you learn. Again.

HTH and good luck... Nico

I found this in /var/lib/dpkg/info/xserver-xfree86.templates:

(I suppose you will get it if you run 'dpkg-reconfigure
xserver-xfree86').

Description: Select the XFree86 server modules that should be
loaded by default. It is possible to customize (or completely
omit) the list of modules that the X server loads by default.
This option is for advanced users. In most cases, all of these
modules except xtt should be enabled.
   .
The GLCore and glx modules enable software OpenGL rendering. The
dri module enables support in the X server for Direct Rendering
Infrastructure (DRI). Note that support for DRI must also exist
in the kernel, the video card, and the installed version of the
Mesa libraries for hardware-accelerated 3D operations using DRI
to work. Otherwise, the server falls back to software rendering.
.
The vbe and ddc modules enable support for VESA BIOS Extensions
and Data Display Channel, respectively. These modules are used
to query monitor capabilties via the video card. The int10
module is a real-mode x86 emulator that is used to softboot
secondary VGA cards. Note that the vbe module depends on the
int10 module, so if wish to enable vbe, enable int10 as well.
.
The dbe module enables the double-buffering extension in the
server, and is useful for animation and video operations.
.
The extmod module enables many traditional and commonly used
extensions, such as shaped windows, shared memory, video mode
switching, DGA, and Xv. The record module implements the RECORD
extension, commonly used in server testing.
.
The bitmap, freetype, speedo, type1, and xtt modules are all
font rasterizers. The freetype and xtt modules should not
be enabled at the same time, as they are incompatible. The
freetype module should be used for Western languages and
anti-aliased font support; the xtt module should be used for
East Asian character set support (specifically, for CID-keyed
   fonts).
   .
For further information about these modules, please consult the
   XFree86 documentation.
.
If you unsure what to do, leave all of the modules enabled
except xtt. Advanced users may wish to disable all modules --
in which case no Modules section will be written to the X server
configuration file -- and add their own Modules section to the
   file manually.

Gzip/gunzip question

2003-06-18 Thread Larry
I gziped a bunch of files in a few directories, in
order to more easily move them to a new computer.

gzip *

Now, when I unzip them with gunzip, I see about 512
bytes of binary stuff on the front of the files (on
both my ascii and binary files), and even more binary
bytes tacked onto the end of the files.

What happened???

Is there a way I can unzip them without this pre/post
padding??

Kernel version 2.4

2003-06-18 Thread Remon Vos

Hi, I just installed Debian
3.0 r1 (woody). Since I have a Mylex DAC960 Raid controller
I had to install the 2.2.20-compact version in order to get the controller
working.

In order to use iptables
(this machine has to be a firewall) I have to upgrade to a 2.4 kernel.

I tried kernel-image-2.4.18-686, but then my Mylex controller is not recognized anymore!

Can anyone think of a solution? (I’m not
familiar with recompiling kernels etc)

Depends on how the bridge to PCMCIA is implemented. On my laptop
(no apparent ISA bus), PCMCIA is implemented with a Intel i82365
ISA-to-PCMCIA bridge. Check /var/log/kern.log for similar message on
boot.

I was having this sort of problem on a 'testing' system, when someone
suggested compiling with gcc-2.95. It worked for me, at least for the
kernel. (It didn't work for the pcmcia modules, but I fixed that by
using the kernel version.) In the toplevel Makefile, replace references
to gcc with gcc-2.95 (assuming 'which gcc-2.95' reports
'/usr/bin/gcc-2.95').

XFree86 problems trying to load module 'sis'

2003-06-18 Thread Charles Roberts
Hello all:
I am trying to get Debian running. The sequence of events:
1. installed 'woody' from floppy disks with the bf2.4 (what ever that
stands for) images (I wanted to use reiserfs). The install when OK. Got
a basic 'cli' Debian system.
2. Did an 'apt-get dist-upgrade' to 'sarge'. All when OK.
3. Used aptitude to install X11. I configured XFree86 OK.
4. This same machine is also running Mandrake, so I know the video works.
5. Issued a 'startx' command. X came up but with the wrong resolution. I
looked in /var/log/XFree86 log and found that the driver 'sis' failed to
load.
6. From a cli I issued 'modprobe sis'. Got an error saying 'could not
find kernel the module was compiled for'.
7. Upgraded the kernel 'with dselect' to 2.4.20-1-k6.
8. Did another 'modprobe sis'. Got error
"/lib/modules/2.4.20-1-k6/kernel drivers/video/sis/sisfb.o: init_module:
no such device". Also got 'insmod sis failed'.

I am out of ideas of what to do next. Any help would be appricated.

Thanks

Does PCMCIA require ISA?

2003-06-18 Thread Patrick Wiseman
I've been messing around with my kernel, and compiled without ISA support,
since I'm on a PCI machine. On rebooting, PCMCIA gave a ResourceIRQ
conflict. When I recompiled the kernel with ISA support, PCMCIA
recognised my card as always.

It turns out my "discovery" is mentioned in the HOWTO, which says:

"In some cases, kernel misconfiguration can also produce an apparent
interrupt shortage. On later 2.4 and 2.5 kernels, if CONFIG_ISA is not
enabled, then the PCMCIA drivers will assume no ISA bus interrupts are
available."

Seems to me that the "misconfiguration" is in the PCMCIA drivers'
"assumption" that no interrupts are available, but so long as it's working
again.

What I recall is that it does crazy things behind your back. Basically,
if you tell it to do TLS, then if you specify port 25, it tries
STARTTLS. If you use any other port (i.e. 465) it does SMTP/SSL.

As per dman's suggestions, avoiding this craziness while testing is a
good idea. Probably testing with Mozilla Mail is a good bet.

I'm attaching an excerpt from my exim.conf (3.x).

Ctrl-home/Ctrl-end in terminal

2003-06-18 Thread Alex Malinovich
I had thought at first that this was just a problem with my emacs, but
I'm beginning to think it's an actual terminal issue. Using Ctrl-home or
Ctrl-end in a terminal only seems to send out a home or end
respectively. This is quite a nuisance as I'm quite fond of using those
shortcuts for beginning and end of buffer in emacs. When I run emacs in
graphical mode, it works just fine. But in a terminal the keys just seem
to die. Any suggestions?

Try metalog or syslog-ng instead of syslogd/klogd. Both have
that feature you want integrated (among other nice stuff of
course). I personally prefer metalog since it has great
performance & is easier to configure.

Sorted it - copied the config for bf2.4 from /boot to my .config, made the
change I needed, then the modules loaded ok - it sees the controller and
discs. Now why doesn't the Debian install see a disk? I've tried fdisk
/dev/sda, /dev/hda, /dev/ataraid/b0, no luck. I've emailed Promise -
hopefully they'll give me some help.

Are there portable ogg players available in the market? You bet ! But
major ones, do not play it. Creative Nomad (which I have) doesn't play
it. Same with Apple iPod. Same with the Sony media Juke box that I have
(It plays Audio CD, Video CD, and mp3). Same with nearly 90% of the
devices out there. Beleive me, I can easily find URL of portable audio
manufacturers that can not play ogg.

As much as I would like to see ogg succeed, I think it would never make
heavy inroads into the market. It will always perhaps remain something
like PNG, a niche for nerds.

To the OP, didn't I warn you that asking about favorite file format is a
good way to start a flame war? ;-)

Re: backporting Questions

2003-06-18 Thread Elliot Dray
Elliot Dray wrote:
1) when you issue the command "apt-get -b build-dep" what exactly does the
build-dep do, does it install dependencies from the branch your trying to
install the package from?

I think you have this command confused with another.

apt-get build-dep packagename
I got that command from an email on this list and when you run it, it does
work (or at least it doesn't error).

fakeroot apt-get -b source packagename

This command is not run as root. It downloads the package source. It
then builds the package. To build the package it needs root-like
privileges and so use fakeroot. But don't use real root.
Is it just because of good practice why you shouldn't use root? there is no
technical reason, is there?

1a) when it lists the files to be installed, what happens if they have
dependencies, do you have to keep drilling down?
>1b) is there a script out there to automate the drill down?

If there are build dependencies then the apt-get build-dep should
install them. If there is a dependency upon another package in
unstable which needs to be backported then you need to start again at
the beginning and to backport that package first.
So you have to find the root and work forwards, ok. Does anyone have a
script that can do this or is it a by hand job?

1c)do you end up with a system at testing or unstable by stealth, because
it has recursively installed so many products?

Yes, no, maybe. It depends upon what you are installing and how you
define things.
As a test I was thinking of evms (only as a test) or request-tracker3. I
suppose it depends on how many programs you have to backport in order to get
the one you want to backport successfully. I'm not sure what you mean by how
you define things?

2) will these dependency files overwrite existing files?
3) can you remove these dependant files after you've managed to install
your package, as one email I found indicated?

What are dependency files? I could not deduce to what you were refering.
I was basically refering to the files that get installed as part of the
build-dep, once you've managed to build your backport can you remove these
files that were pulled down in order to satisfy the dependencies so that
your package would build from source. Again this was what was said in
another post awhile back.

4) if a package is very easy to backport, why isn't this done as part of
the original build process?

Because it is an arbitrary line between packages that you want to have
in the backport and all packages. For example, why isn't glibc
backported? Pretty much at the point in time that you backport
everything you now have testing/unstable. So this is only viable when
you want to stay on stable but also want or need a few specific
targeted packages.
Ok, understand, but wouldn't it be viable for some packages which have few
dependencies (and backport easily) to be backported at the time of creation
by the developer? just a thought

5) In one email I saw this command " apt-get -b build-dep
packagename/testing", this format didn't work for me as apt tried to find
packagename/testing instead of packagename in the testing branch. Is this
suppose to work?

Hmm... Can't say. I don't know. I am not an expert on pinning. I
usually avoid pinning.
ok, no worries

Bob
Thanks for your answers, things are clearer now and I'll have a play with a

You have exim set up as an Internet Site, not a Smarthost Client.

To deliver the message, exim first determines (via DNS) that the
machine centrion.com.br is the one that handles mail for
centroin.com.br. It tries to connect there so it can deliver the
message, but the connection times out. Normally this is retried
periodically. However, since you are using dial-up I suspect that you
are not online nearly continuously.

| What is going wrong?

As David suggests, instead of trying to deliver mail directly to the
recipient, pass it off through your ISP's smarthost. The smarthost
will then handle connecting to the recipient's mail server and
retrying like it is supposed to.

No, but you are out of luck (AFAIK) for ready-made solutions.

What you can do is instruct exim to pass all messages through a pipe
as it delivers them. In your system filter put
unseen pipe "/usr/local/bin/gpg-key-retrieve"
(read the exim manual for setting up a system filter; it really is
quite trivial)

Then create the program "gpg-key-retrieve". It needs to parse enough
of the message to determine the key's id and then merely run the gpg
command to retrieve it.

On a reasonably fast machine (Pentium class, 300MHz), not more than
five or ten minutes. If you're not in a hurry and you're on a slow

might want to wait and see what others suggest; I'm often an idiot and

2003-06-18 Thread Bob Proulx
Whither logwatch?

In the past on RH systems I have used logwatch to summarize
interesting logfile events and mail them to the admin. Recently I
have not used anything. Just yesterday a friend, that I have
convinced to try Debian, asked about logwatch. I would like to give
him a good answer.

Of course I 'apt-cache search'ed for logwatch and logfile and found
several other examples of packages which do logfile analysis. But I
was surprised that logwatch itself was not among the list. Does
anyone have a .deb of it?

Since it is obviously not favored among Debian users or it would be
more readily available it leads me to ask what are the favored log
watch utilities? I can certainly walk through the list of available
ones. But here I would like to learn from your experiences and hear
your recommendations.

Thanks

I don't think that the walls are that big though, and the farest box
would be about 10 meters away from the access-point..

I think you have this command confused with another.

  apt-get build-dep packagename

That command installs all of the dependencies that are needed to build
the package. This must be done as root since it is making an
installation. This is only needed if you don't have something
installed that is needed to build the package. The 'help2man' is an
example that comes to mind from some packages.

  fakeroot apt-get -b source packagename

This command is not run as root. It downloads the package source. It
then builds the package. To build the package it needs root-like
privileges and so use fakeroot. But don't use real root.

If there are build dependencies then the apt-get build-dep should
install them. If there is a dependency upon another package in
unstable which needs to be backported then you need to start again at
the beginning and to backport that package first.

> 1c)do you end up with a system at testing or unstable by stealth, because

Yes, no, maybe. It depends upon what you are installing and how you
define things.

What are dependency files? I could not deduce to what you were refering.

> 4) if a package is very easy to backport, why isn't this done as part of

Because it is an arbitrary line between packages that you want to have
in the backport and all packages. For example, why isn't glibc
backported? Pretty much at the point in time that you backport
everything you now have testing/unstable. So this is only viable when
you want to stay on stable but also want or need a few specific
targeted packages.

Hmm... Can't say. I don't know. I am not an expert on pinning. I
usually avoid pinning.

If I understand you right, you get mail from several lists as well as
personal and work mail all through one account, and you want to have the
different categories to to different folders in Evolution.

I do this. I don't even use any other mail agent (fetchmail or such - I
probably will in the future). I entered my pop email account details
into Evolution, and all the mail comes into the Inbox.

Where I select one example of each mail type (I can select by sender,
recipients, mailing list!, or subject) and tell Evolution which folder I
want such mail to go to. I can create the new folder on the fly during
this process, if I want to.

The first time, I then use Ctrl-A to select all messages, then
right-click in the Inbox list to get a context menu and select "Apply
Filters". Evolution filters all the mail into the newly designated
folders, and then does it automatically from then on.

No fuss, no muss.

There's a recipe given in the man pages for this, but not in man
cdda2wav - it's in man cdrecord... You need the -B option, eg:

  cdda2wav -v255 -D2,0 -B -Owav

(adjust -D option to suit your system... cdrecord -scanbus to find
what you need)

> Could someone point me in the right direction here? Also, what does everyone

If you care about quality, wav.

If you also care about storage space, compress it with flac
(free *lossless* audio codec).

If you care about storage space more than quality, ogg.

If you care about storage space more than quality and you want to
share your audio files with Windoze lusers, mp3.

Ogg and mp3 are *lossy* compression formats, which means they throw
away data to help compress the file and therefore produce artefacts on
the output (cf. the fuzzy border around sharp edges in jpeg images).
Ogg produces higher quality than mp3, is faster, and is free.

These are all nonstandard high ports above 1024. Anytime your system
makes an outgoing TCP connection it will open an unused high port of

I installed another box and put it in the first box's place. I've run my
script that scans the ports every 30 seconds for about 10 hours so far, and
not a single strange port was listed, while the old box had several hundreds
of odd ports open in just 1 day of scans. Once I noticed the odd ports, I
could reproduce it by hand at will. These high ports have yet to show up in
a scan of the new box.

from the nmap man page it says:

Open means that the target machine will accept() connections on that port.

Does that include a port used to communicate with a remote webserver from
inside my network via NAT? I've tried scanning my box, while generating a
lot of webtraffic and I have not been able to see these ports via nmap, so I
don't think so. Wouldn't a packet that's not part of its connection, one
from a random communication attempt be dropped because its sequence, etc are
all wrong?

Lets just say the old box is not getting back on my network until after I

Yup. You want to enable WINS in the samba daemon (it's right there in
/etc/samba/smb.conf) and tell your other clients about the WINS
server. If you're using DHCP to configure your Windows hosts, you can
automate the task of telling them about the WINS server by telling
your DHCP server about it.

currently running. inetd doesn't like it when you define a given
service multiple times.

| Jun 16 18:07:09 a1700xp imapd[1161]: connect from a1700xp.ebeb.com
|
| I now see email inside netscape from IMAP.

Good.

| It is working sorf of except everything
| marked unread and all folders are gone.

With many imap clients you must "subscribe" to a folder or else you
won't see it in the list. Try that. Subscribe to the folders you
want to see listed.

| This could be a byproduct of doing a:
| user# fetchmail -p IMAP oldIMAPserver.localdomain

Yeah. Fetchmail grabs the mail from the specified server, then
delivers it to the local mail system. (by default it uses SMTP to
localhost:25, but doesn't have a terribly robust SMTP implementation)
The local mail system thus sees the messages as new (because it is
newly delivered through the mail system) and will all be delivered to
your inbox unless you have some sort of filtering/sorting set up.

| Also fetchmail only downloaded the 110 newest emails.

I don't know about this. Read the fetchmail manual and see if it says
something about it.

| Some one recommended moving the imap file from the old server
| to the same location of files of new server.
| Maybe this will give my folders back.
| I guess I will be
| updatedb ; locate imap
| on both servers to find that out.

The mail isn't stored in a file called "imap".

If you have a typical basic/default set up, your inbox is
/var/mail/$USER and any other folders are located in ~/Mail. In
addition, you are probably (but only you know how you configured
things) using the 'mbox' format which puts all messages into a single
file. Based on that assumption :

To move the mail spool from the old server to the new one, do the
following :
(on old server)
cd ; tar -zcvf My-Mail.tar.gz /var/mail/$USER Mail

Then copy "My-Mail.tar.gz" to the new server. (I often use scp
for that)0

(on new server)
mkdir /tmp/foo ; cd /tmp/foo ; tar -zxvf /path/to/My-Mail.tar.gz
cat ./var/mail/$USER >> /var/mail/$USER
for F in ./Mail/* ; do cat $F >> ~/Mail/`basename $F` ; done

Note: this little bit of shell doesn't handle the possibility of
having directories in ~/Mail with folders inside of them. If you have
that sort of arrangement, you should be able to extend these
instructions to handle that.

Well, you can set a symlink to a folder. Thus, when entering the
symlink, you will enter the symlinked folder.
Everything is a file ;)

May be not You may be right, my knowledge of C is not that great. I am hoping
here at having to make minor changes in the code.
I found the line

static char *WmStr[17] = {WmNoChange,NULL,NULL,NULL,NULL};

where the variable is defined. Now, it seems to me that the garbled output begun
before the 12th window manager, or even before the 13th (17-4=13, guessing the use of
NULLs), so I am not sure about what to do next.
Assuming the needed change is just to write, say, 100 instead of 17. Then what, should
I follow the instructions given in

http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto/ch-sourcehandling.en.html

??

Thanks to all, and special thanks to Noah.

Just a shoot in the dark:
Did you completely log out and then log in again after adding yourself
to the winusers group?
AFAIK changes in group memberships will only apply after the next
login...

In this case, what can I do in order Linux Mozilla and Windows Mozilla
to share address books and bookmarks? (I thought of symlinking them).

First of all: better try to use the same release on both platforms.

When using Mozilla I set symlinks from abook.mab, bookmarks.html,
cookies.txt and the Mail and News folders to the corresponding windows
targets.
Unfortunately there were some drawbacks:
Sometimes Mozilla doesn't follow the symlink when saving a file (ie. a
mailbox) but creates it anew thus thrashing the symlink. That's why I
set up some folder symlinks...
It worked for me for some time, but then I quit using Windows at all, so
I don't know how good / stable this solution is. YMMV...
HTH,
Flo

I am running sid with apt-get 0.5.5.1 on an ia32 box.

Is there any way I can fix this problem? Strange enough, on other

TIA.

Yeah, mii-tools lets you do that. If that doesn't work, then ethtool should.

Perhaps mii-diag might help you...

To set the speed automagically once the network starts up I personally use
this:

Any comments are appreciated...
