While not an ideally simple solution, you can probably define an Action
to run the message through the spell-checker of your choice. That is,
if the Woody version has Actions - I think they are a somewhat recent
addition to the main branch.

RE: Problem with video card when installing debian Gnu/Linux.

2003-08-21 Thread Johansson Mikael (mj)
Hello Mark.
Thank you for responding.
I have run lspci as root and found that my video-card is
described as an unknown device. The dpkg-reconfigure gives
an error message saying that something is not installed.
I think its time for Unstable/sid. When trying to download
this version of Debian-Linux I cant find the usual i386.
What version of the Unstable/sid should I use for my
AMD processor or can I use sarge?
If you have time and want to respond, its ok if you dont I
appericiate the help you already given, please put my email-
address in the Cc... I have trouble being part of the list
because of the huge amount of emails.
I want to send this to the list though. Maybe someone else
has the same problem.

Best Regards

You need to be root (or you can specify the full path for
the command, but it won't necessarily help you if you need
root permissions to read things anyway). Su to root, or
log in as root, and then run lspci and dpkg-reconfigure
and things will go as clockwork. Which means they'll go
well. :-)

This sounds like something everybody could easily do with procmail.
Everybody go for it, just make sure it's going to the postmaster at

Sylpheed doen't have spell checking -- use sylpheed-claws instead they call it
a bleeding edge version but I have always found it stable enough for day to
day use.

Re: Best way to upgrade a single app

2003-08-21 Thread Darik Horn
I do this with pinning.

1. Make this your /etc/apt/preferences file:

# /etc/apt/preferences -- The APT preferences configuration.
# Run 'man apt_preferences' for more information.
#
# This file tells APT to use packages from the stable distribution by
# default, but allows packages from other distributions to be used without
# complete distribution upgrade.
#
# The user may specifically request packages from a particular distribution
# with --target-release option of apt-get.
#
# WARNING: Empty lines have special meaning in this file.
#
Package: *
Pin: release a=stable
Pin-Priority: 900
Package: *
Pin: release a=testing
Pin-Priority: 800
Package: *
Pin: release a=unstable
Pin-Priority: 700
# eof
2. Add the appropriate lines to the /etc/apt/sources.list file:

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ testing main non-free contrib

3. Run `apt-get update`.

4. Run `apt-get upgrade`. (If nothing is downloaded, then the pin is
working properly.)

5. Run `apt-get install -t testing spamassassin`. (There might be
dependencies on a newer version of perl or libc.)

6. Be careful with dselect after installing the pin. There are many
'required' packages in testing that it will try to install, but that you
don't really need.

David Corbin wrote:

I have a production system, that I do NOT want to migrate to testing/unstable.
But, I would like to upgrade one particular package (spamassassin, in this
case) to a more recent version.

What is the recommended way of doing this? Should I just download and build
the upstream package? Can pinning help me?

Thanks
David
P.S. I realize that upgrading any package might require upgrades to several
other packages.

Re: Quick question regarding permissions and tar

2003-08-21 Thread Darik Horn
tar cvfPpj /home/mark/secure-server-woody.tar.bz2 /home/image/secure-server
Run `tar jtvvf secure-sever-woody.tar.bz2` and notice how every file in the tarball has the '/home/image/secure-server' prefix. This will make it difficult to unpack. (The 'Pp' switches are not doing what you think they're doing.)

You will get the desired result by doing this:

# cd /home/image/secure-server
# tar jcf /home/mark/secure-server-woody.tar.bz2 *
You can install the tarball to a new disk by doing this:

# mkdir /target
# mount /dev/MyDisk /target
# cd /target
# tar jxf /home/mark/secure-server-woody.tar.bz2
# [install a boot loader to the new disk]
If you really need the initial '/' in the tarball, then you'll need to do something like this:

# chroot /home/image/secure-secure
# tar --exclude /out.tar.bz2 -jcvPf out.tar.bz2 /
# exit
Mark C wrote:

Hi,

I've created a snapshot of a secure locked down server running woody that
was stetup on a secure non net connnected pc, I've got it setup to run
discover and a few other apps on boot to automatically detect hardware and
so forth, so I can then extract this to any new server and setup a few
basic things like fstab, lilo, partitioning and updates etc..
I've installed the harddrive to another pc that again is not net
connected, but running woody with Gnome, I've mounted the hardrive and
created a compressed image of the new system:
tar cvfPpj /home/mark/secure-server-woody.tar.bz2 /home/image/secure-server

Basically this will compress using bz2 compression, do not strip slashes
and keep the permissions of the files.
This is fine, I have a live cd (opps, running gentoo basic, as its only
66mb), which I have copied the image to and use to extract to a new pc.
The problem I'm getting is that its not keeping the correct permissions,
it looks like its taking the permissions from the host livecd.
This I can understand, but when I chroot into the new environment, all the
permissions are messed up, where as in /dev/ where is should say i.e.
cdrom it only says 18 for the group (yes cdrom is listed in /etc/groups).
I can cure this by copying the same version of group from the newly
extracted system into the live cd after boot up and then wipe the
extracted image and re extract the new image again.
Basically is there any way around this problem? apart from creating my own
livecd using debian as a base
(I know I could try knoppix, but I really want a small base live cd,so
there is space for the new image)
Thanks

Sylpheed spellchecking help

2003-08-21 Thread Russ Pitman
I tried for several times to sub to the sylpheed mail list to ask this but
no go so far, probably my error, however perhaps someone using sylpheed can
help.

Briefly I installed a debian woody system for a elderly friend to use as a
browser and email and 'learn about computers'.

He can manage both fine now using mozilla and sylpheed but has problems with
spelling.

I've been through both the FAQ and the sylpheed-doc manual and can't even
find a mention of spellchecking anywhere.

Using an external editor is not a satisfactory solution. My friends son uses
yahoo and his mailer has a spellchecking button.

So,failing a simple spellcheck for sylpheed, I suppose that my question
really becomes, can anyone suggest a Debian alternative to the Yahoo mailer.

I am about to setup a separate Woody box to use to test any suggestions

TIA.

Well, dubbed versions go for flow of speech instead of literal
translations, which subtitles tend to shoot for. It's pretty rare to
find a foreign film whose subtitles are the same as the English dub.
Mononoke Hime is a *rare* example of this.

Help parsing a fetchmail dumped mail file

2003-08-21 Thread Karsten M. Self
I've got a file which 'file' reports as "lostmail: ASCII mail text, with
very long lines".

As I posted here yesterday, fetchmail was choking on ill-formed headers,
which research suggested was actually exim puking and fetchmail handling
the situation...ungracefully (fetchmail should, and may? have the option
to simply delete or bounce such mails).

Research suggested a fix was to use procmail as an MDA directly, rather
than exim (the local MTA). This should reduce load on the local box
anyway as this bypasses a redundent Spamassassin pass. So I edited
/etc/fetchmailrc and added the line 'with mda "/usr/bin/procmail".

Of course, the problem is, that this procmail process runs as the user
fetchmail is running as. Though I'm somewhat relieved I didn't lose
1107 messages, totalling 34 MiB, I'm not quite sure what to do with the
resulting file.

(BTW, the fix, I suppose, is to run a user-mode fetchmail process, not a
system daemon).

Mutt doesn't recognize it as any known mbox format. I believe it's
largely what fetchmail receives. The format is:

A line reading "Status: U"
A "Return-Path:" header.
Subsequent RFC 822 headers.
Message body.

Sample:

Status: U

My question is: how can I wrangle this file into a format that's
further processable? I've tried with mutt, formail simply spits out a
single, somewhat large mail message (all 34 MiB ;-).

Suggestions welcomed.

Peace.

I have always understood that *any* open files would prevent a
partition from being unmounted, and I assume the same is true for
remounting the partition as read-only. Therefore, using this
assumption, *every* file listed via "lsof +D /usr" must be closed
before the kernel will permit the partition to be unmounted or
remounted.

But perhaps I'm wrong.

Anyone in the know care to set me straight?

LILO ! framebuffer

2003-08-21 Thread Paul M Foster
Installation: Debian 3.0r1, kernel 2.4.16tsc, very old video card, so no
weird nvidia drivers or anything. This is a machine I'm converting over
from Red Hat 6.2. I'll searched for "framebuffer" in the Debian User
archives for the last six months, and don't see the answer to this
question.

On boot, I'm getting the framebuffer, with the little colored Tux in the
upper lefthand corner of the screen. I don't want that, I want Linux to
talk directly to my video card. I've tried vga=ask and vga=0 in Lilo,
and neither works (vga=ask does indeed ask me, though). I thought I'd
fixed this on other machines with vga=0, but it does not work with this
one. Anyone know how to make the framebuffer and Tux go away?

What indication do you have that your parport isn't working?

All you need is to load the
parport
parport_pc
lp
modules and the parallel port will work.

To test it, dump some data to /dev/lp0 and you should see the printer
react. If the printer can handle ASCII input directly you should see
it print[1]. For example,
# echo -ne 'Hello World\n\f' >> /dev/lp0

HTH,

[1] All non-Apple laser printers I've seen and old "line" printers
can handle ASCII text directly. Apple Laserwriters can only handle
Postscript. Many (low-end) inkjets made in the past few years can
only handle propietary, binary, data streams.

There are a couple of ways. One is to use exim's built-in filtering
mechanism. An incomplete example can be found on exim.org. It is
incomplete becase not all encodings and variations on MIME headers can
be parsed with a single regular expression.

Another is to use the technique described in
http://dman13.dyndns.org/~dman/config_docs/exim-spamassassin/ and
simply replace the spamassassin-specific parts with whatever filter
mechanism you want.

Not too hard. I highly recommend upgrading to version 4. It is
greatly improved in a number of ways.

X 4.3 isn't a panacea:

I'm running X 4.3 and totem still doesn't work. I need to either
downgrade X or patch X 4.3, but I have the patience for neither and so I
use mplayer instead. (I tried downgrading just libXi, but that made X
crash.)

Oh this is very interesting: here is what I get with the policy command (didn't
know about it at all thanks)

I'm not sure I have a tuned kernel, I juste used a dirty patch to make it
ptrace-proof. But I'm sure I did this because apt-get wasn't offering me to upgrade
it so it was the case with the vanilla kernel.

I installed a kernel image once, but it seems it comes with different options
from the base kernel at least that is what I thought because the net connection
wasn't working anymore and I had a lot of modules errors at boot. I can't tell you
enough details so I know this is somewhat useless, but I thought that since
kernel image wasn't using the modules I need, I'd better to recompile a kernel
myself, grabbing it straight from ftp.kernel.org

This is not the solution I prefer though: since I'm glad and satisfied of my Debian
I'd love to stick with it's tools. I prefer to compile a kernel the Debian way for
instance. Unfortunately, the more documentation I read the more I understand that
there are many things you can do the debian way (which is cool) but I don't find
*the* documentation explaining what I need *in short* (which is rather understandable)
and don't have enough time for all the theory. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining:
the problem is only on my side and I realise this, but I'd love to find documentations
going deeper than the make kpkg stuff and explaining how to deal with the kernel
images , the sources, apt and so on to be able to upgrade right out of the box to the
most secured kernel in no time. I can do it manually, doing it the Debian way would
be a real improvment.

I

Backup mail server?

2003-08-21 Thread Bengt Thure'e
Hej,

I am thinking of creating my own mailserver, but I have
one problem which I would like to get some advice for how
to solve.
What I am planning:
---
Configure a mailserver which will have pop/imap as well as
web mail access. Users will be my family and some friends.
Problem - small
---
Can I configure a backup mail server somewhere, just in case
this one crashes? Or is it not needed, since mail will be resend?
Problem - Big
-
I will be without computers for a month or two, and consequently
no mail server for that time. Any suggestion for a solution?
Tentativ solution
-
My brother has a fixed IP address, but he is not a linux guy.
I am considering asking him to install a plain debian installation,
and then SSH to the box and configure it to be a backup mail
server, to forward mails to the main server every 2 hours or so.
And possible to activate pop/imap web access for the mails if
the main server have long term problems.
Any comments or suggestions?

Thanks in advance

/Bengt

Even if the BIOS setup screen does not show you more than 137GB,
a new enough kernel and EIDE controller will give you 160GB.

Of course, as John says, if your mobo is more than ~1 year old,
you may need to get a PCI controller.

Disks are more of a bios or kernel issue, most kernels by default are
setup to handle atapi drives. That said I like to have hwtools &
hdparm installed on IDE systems.

The only things that will stop Linux from recognising your hard drive in
full are:

1) The Bios
2) The IDE controller
3) Using older software versions
You should be able to flash your bios if it does not support large
drives, check the website for your motherboard. While you are there,
check that your IDE controllers will support large drives.

If your computer is over a year old, you may find that you can upgrade
your bios, but cannot do anything about your IDE controller. In that
case, upgrade your bios and use a seperate controller card that does
support large drives.

So long as you use a recent kernel (I suggest 2.4.20) then you should
not have any problems seeing the full disk once the hardware is sorted out.

Johnny.

There isn't really much to set up most of the time. Either it finds a
parallel port and it'll work, or it doesn't find one and it won't. All I
get in dmesg on my print server is:

  parport0: PC-style at 0x378 [SPP,PS2]
  lp0: using parport0 (polling).

The parport0 line says what kind of parallel port it found, and the lp0
line says that /dev/lp0 is using parport0.

Well, shoot. It had nothing to do with .Xauthority or PAM. I had .xsession
set to start icewm-gnome and the new install didn't have it installed. I
changed it to start icewm and it works just fine. The light went on after
I had been at work a little while today. For some reason I was just running

What's wrong with /etc/rcS.d ? Just put a script there, or a symlink to

Urm, actually I don't have a raidtab, because I used mdadm:

mdadm -C /dev/md7 -l 5 -n 3 /dev/hda9 /dev/hde1 /dev/hdg9
mkfs.ext3 /dev/md7

Possibly mdadm has other defaults than the raid-tools.
Generally I recommend to use mdadm, because it is more flexible and
actively maintained by Neil Brown, the Linux SoftwareRAID guy.

If they are isa then (informatical) you need 'isapnptools' and to
do a isapnp dump.
Then a config of /etc/isapnp.conf is needed. There you chose the irq and the io(s)
of your cards. (uncomment these lines)
The isapnptools must be started at boot of course.
The rest is a config of your cards as eth0 and eth1.

When that was posted on debianplanet, xfree86 was not part of of my
backport. After it was, I let people know via the list. I am not sure
what you are trying to accomplish here, but I have submitted another
article to debianplanet, and when it goes through, I will ask gnome.org
to update their link for getting gnome on debian.

No, as I said, I don't follow sid (and by extension fifth toe) from
release to release. With the backport you now have everything you need
to compile bleeding edge gnome2 and gtk2 applications all you want. I
try to keep the backport as stable as possible, and not introduce a
whole lot of new stuff. I did not backport all of fifth toe, nor do I
track for each new change-- it moves too quickly, as does sid.

The general idea for gnome-core is to use the packages found from
released gnome (gnome.org-- now at 2.2), and updating only the packages
with significant bugfixes. For gnome-fifth-toe and the other apps, you
get relatively new software that works. If you want more than that,
there is sid.

This is aptitude realizing that nothing is using these libraries, it has
nothing to do with evolution or the backport. KDE from woody can be
installed with the backport without problems.

I think there are some, but I don't have any familiarity with them.
The main issue with such tools is that probing certain ISA devices
will cause the system to lock up. That's just the way ISA works.
(and one good reason for PCI to have superseded it)

Did you read my other mail? With defaults I mean that what you get, if
you don't use any special commandline parameters. Though, if you are
concerned about performance, it would be wise to read e.g. the Software
RAID Howto (which talks a bit about chunk size, stride and so
on) and to experiment with these parameters.

It wouldn't increase the speed if the RAID1 is on the same disks, but if
you have a different disk set you should see an increase. For very high
performance stuff people put the journal on a battery backed solid state
disk - very expensive though.

Assuming that the fonts you have installed have all of the applicable
characters, that shouldn't be a problem. I believe that both Katakana
and Hiragana are supported in Unicode so you shouldn't have a problem on
that end. I believe that Kanji is supported as well, but that's a very
long story regarding Chinese-type characters and Unicode that I'll leave
to you to investigate if you're interested.

Assuming you're exchanging messages with friends who have French,
Japanese, and English fonts installed, and that their mailers support
Unicode, you'll obviously have no problem. Assuming that they speak and
write Japanese, French and English like you do, I would certainly hope
that they would have those fonts installed.

If their mailers don't support Unicode, I can't make any guarantees
other than for the standard ASCII characters. I know that in the case of
Cyrillic at least, there appears to be some overlap between Unicode and
ISO encodings so they show up alright most of the time. As far as
Japanese fonts go, I don't know. That much you'll have to discover on
your own.

Good luck. :)

Setting up the parport

Hi all

I've been setting up the important things for a while but now I'm getting to

need to do is to get printing to work. I've been battling to get cups working

 parport0: irq 7 detected
 parport0: faking semi-colon
 parport0: Printer, HEWLETT-PACKARD DESKJET 710C

Now for me dmesg shows

parport0: PC-style at 0x378 [PCSPP(,...)]

I've missed something I think, any ideas??

Hard Drive Crash Recovery

2003-08-21 Thread Curtis Spencer
I had a hard drive crash last night on one of my systems. Fortunately
only a near empty /home and the swap partition were on that drive so I
did not lose too much data.
However, I don't know how to go about remounting the /home directory and
the swap partition. Is there any way to mount the /home directory on
another drive that already has data on it, but is not full? I would
prefer not to buy a new drive if I don't have to. If I have to use
another drive what are the commands I must do to prepare it for mounting
/home and a new swap partition on it?

Thanks for all the help,

Interesting... Cynically, I would guess that both devices are using
the same kind of averaging-calibrated-to-read-RMS-with-sinewaves
method and so both give similar errors... OTOH, maybe you have a good
enough multimeter to do true RMS conversion, and if I was designing a
'Kill a Watt' type device I'd use a PIC microcontroller to sample the
voltage and current waveforms and do RMS conversion in software (cf.
your next para), which would keep the hardware very simple. So maybe
both are correct...

Agreed... and it wouldn't be too hard to knock up an isolating
interface to feed the voltage and current waveforms into a sound card,
and do this all in software.

> (Also, the current transformer includes a gizmo for separating the

Oh, very good. Radio Shack used to trade as Tandy in the UK and were
generally overpriced (especially for components) and of indifferent
quality. I was expecting them to leave their customers to either rip
their mains leads apart or to measure ground loop currents in blissful
ignorance... :-)

Ooo. I would not make that change a global change. Instead I would
make it a private change just for the application.

File myvericad:
  #!/bin/sh
  export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/libkde3
  exec vericad "$@"

Now in that case when you run vericad it gets the old libraries but
this does not affect anything else. Actually I would call it by the
same name and put it in /usr/local/bin which is ahead of /usr/bin in
PATH and have it do the rest. That way it behaves the same.

File /usr/local/bin/vericad:
  #!/bin/sh
  export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/libkde3
  exec /usr/bin/vericad "$@"

> start varicad - runs ok - no SEGV - cool.

> remove the lib path from ld.so.conf and ldconfig, konqueror runs ok now.

This proposal above should solve this problem.

Caveat: Since LD_LIBRARY_PATH is in the environment it will persist
into subshells launched by vericad. If you shell out of vericad into
a subshell and then launch konqueror you will get the old libs which
cause konqueror to core dump. So don't do that. :-) I don't even
know if you can do that with vericad but just in case.

Whatever version is in sarge, which is 3.3 at the moment. However, this
of course all depends on what happened to be on maintainers' machines
and build daemons when the most recent version of each package was
built.

> Is this question related to the delays in getting gnome2.2 and kde 3.1

Not really, no. That's more a question of complicated library
transitions at the moment: for example, pilot-link's library has changed
its package name, and both GNOME and KDE use it, so core bits of both
GNOME and KDE will have to be ready for testing at the same time in
order for either to be upgraded. Quite a lot of attention is being paid
to this sort of thing at the moment, though.

(Also, glibc 2.3.2 is currently holding up more or less everything, and
fixing it is a very high priority.)

Cheers,

This was the problem, I had compiled the kernel for the wrong
chipset. Now it's fixed, now I have DMA, and now I get about 170% of
the read performance of the previously fast system. Write
performance dropped to about 99.7%. Cool.

had completely reformated my linux partitions when i installed Debian.

Really Stuck (nvidia drivers, X11 problem ???)

2003-08-21 Thread Michael Bonert
I am really stuck on the nvidia drivers install and am starting to wonder
whether I need a kernel upgrade (which I don't know how to do).

No it doesnt. Worst case if you down load text files you have to convert
line endings. Binary downloads are binary. ;)

I can see if you didn't realize that *nix and dos have an incompatible
opinion on what the end of a line in a text file looks like, but its not
that the file is incomplete. Its that when you download in ascii mode
the line end conversion happens automagically (most times).

ISA network cards

2003-08-21 Thread jleclair

I'm trying to set up an old 486 as router/nat/firewall server for home network. The 2
nics are dlink 220 isa.
When I run modconf, I choose the NE net module with this parameter:
   io=0x300
This works and the module loads for eth0. How do I load the module now for the second
nic?
I dont know the io address of the 2nd nic and the module will only load once. I guess
I could do something like: io=0x240,0x300 when loading the module through modconf.
BTW, I guessed at the io address that DID respond and have since unloaded the module
and tried every other io address to make the second nic work. Are there tools to probe
for hardware responding on io addresses not listed
in /etc/proc?
I know this is all quite vague, but I am completely PCI plug-n-play spoiled.
Thanks for any assistance!

kernel patch resolved bug but can't find it

2003-08-21 Thread A. Loonstra
I was trying to patch my kernel 2.4.18(latest) using kernel-package but
it didn't work. According to this bug:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?archive=no&bug=143198

There should be a new version of grsecurity patch. But I can only get
version 1.9.4-1.

This is what it says when i try to run make-kpkg

Testing whether Greater Security for Linux 2.4.x patch for 2.4.18
applies (dry run):
1 out of 1 hunk FAILED -- saving rejects to file fs/proc/proc_tty.c.rej
1 out of 11 hunks FAILED -- saving rejects to file include/linux/sched.h.rej
Greater Security for Linux 2.4.x patch for 2.4.18 does not apply cleanly

Any clues what's going wrong?

Arnaud.

There is also a bug in xfree86 that apparently isn't fixed in sid yet.
See:

http://bugs.xfree86.org/show_bug.cgi?id=260

Patch attached. This patch (taken from the above link and adapted for
use with debian) works with xfree86 4.2.1-3 in my backport. Hopefully
this patch will be integrated into sid soon (I am not sure xfree86 4.3
has the fix yet either).

Why not just write a single script, /etc/init.d/local or something,

This is further offtopic. There's an excellent movie that's called death

Here are the instructions you posted earlier in this thread:

apt-get update && apt-get -u dist-upgrade
apt-get install gnome-core
and optionally:
apt-get install gnome gnome-fifth-toe gdm

Here are the instructions from your post that is linked to the announcement at debian
planet:

apt-get update
apt-get install gnome-core gdm gtk2-engines*
For the gnome2.2 development packages, you can do:
apt-get install gnome-core-devel
And to pull in various other pieces of gnome software, do:
apt-get install gnome
...You can optionally do an 'apt-get -u dist-upgrade' which will pull in
all the development support packages that were needed to compile these
(eg backported automake, debconf, etc).

Are those sets of instructions functionally the same?

> [Fifth Toe]is a collection of packages. I backport
> what is interesting to me (as maintainer, I have that right), and what

> is a bug fix.

Not being subscribed to either of these lists until the beginning of this
conversation, my education on the subject of Fifth Toe began when I saw the following
(optional) line in your instructions:

apt-get install gnome gnome-fifth-toe gdm

I didn't know what Fifth Toe was. I went to http://5toe.lyrical.net/ and saw:

"Fifth Toe is a selective collection of applications that use GNOME technologies. All
the applications in a Fifth Toe release are stable, maintained, and conform to the
GNOME Human Interface Guide ( HIG )...The Fifth Toe release is a periodic release of
the applications that have The Fifth Toe release team is attempting to move closer to
a monthly release cycle." (sic)

So, as a user of Woody who was becoming part of this via a backport (already somewhere
between stable and unstable in Debian terms), I was having trouble sorting out the
relationship between what I was capable of using on my system and what the Fifth Toe
project considers stable (in Gnome terms). Plus, if the Fifth Toe is going to have
monthly releases, did that then mean that with this Fifth Toe backport, I would be
able to download and use next month's Fifth Toe releases? Would they be cycled into
the Fifth Toe backport server? After some searching today, I found
http://lists.debian.org/debian-gtk-gnome/2003/debian-gtk-gnome-200304/msg00170.html
which clarified things somewhat, though it doesn't completely clarify the issue. Of
course it's at your discretion which packages you want to backport; I just want to be
clear on what the backport can do and what it can't do.

Autodetection and configuring of devices! Need advice

2003-08-21 Thread Joakim Nordberg
Hi ppl,

I'm currently runnig a small distribution meant for terminal services, like,
X, Citrix, RDP and VNC. Which is installable on a disc with just dd, which
makes it very easy to deploy on hundreds of machines during a day.

For the moment i'm running on Sarge together with tools from Knoppix like
hwsetup and mkxf86config which are really nice. And it works like a dream!

But I would like to run it on Woody since Sarge updates too often, -but the
Knoppix tools runs only on Sarge or Sid. Got the picture?

Are there other tools I could use?
Discover for all hardware, -but
What should I use for X
What should I use for Mouse?

ppp demand dial

2003-08-21 Thread Andrew Bulmer
I'm having trouble getting demand dial to work on debian testing. I
compiled my own kernel (2.4.21) and set up NAT. I uncommented the demand
and and idle 300 in /etc/ppp/options. I've tried it with and without the
persist option. Here's a little more info:

/etc/init.d/ppp start
Starting up PPP link: pppd.

ps aux
...
root 5271 0.0 0.3 1936 892 ?S12:16 0:00 pppd call
provider
...

route -n

Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric RefUse
Iface
10.112.112.112 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 UH0 00
ppp0
192.168.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 00
eth1
0.0.0.0 10.112.112.112 0.0.0.0 UG0 00
ppp0

I use the /etc/init.d/ipmasq to enable NAT and it works fine. I don't
think the NAT has anything to do with it since I can try pinging outside
hosts while logged in locally to the server and it still doesn't
connect.

Is there some option that I missed when configuring the kernel?

Thanks,
Andrew Bulmer

This is a little difficult to grasp. How does your team handle versions
of it's work now? And what language/environment are you coding for?

The idea that management won't let an existing team use tools makes me
think there's some other background here, and we need to know that in
order to give sensible answers. Is it rather that there is an existing
tool set in place already that isn't useful for your group?

A manager too dumb to allow a programming team to organize their work
defies sense.

I backported sawfish-- it works fine with gnome2.2. As for gnome1.4
packages, they should be fine since the libraries they depend on can be
installed in parallel. In practice, two rather large gnome1.4 apps--
gnucash 1.8 and evolution 1.2 worked fine under the backport.

The only apps that really have trouble in gnome2.2 are applets from
gnome1.4, since the panel changed so much.

See the webpage at

http://irg.cs.ohiou.edu/~eblanton/i18n/russkb.html

It's for russian/qwerty layout, but it should work for everything.

Just keep in mind there is an error in it, down the page:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Keyboard0"
Driver "keyboard"
Option "XkbLayout" "ru"
Option "XkbOptions" "ctrl:nocaps,grp:shift_toggle"
EndSection

The line

Option "XkbLayout" "ru"

should be replaced by

Option "XkbLayout" "us,ru"

of course replace "us,ru" with the two layouts you want. Then just shift
with shift+shift.

Gaspard

They do (IRC, anyway), but it's just not as effective. Face-to-face
communication and the ability to look over at somebody's screen in real
time and say "oh, *that's* what's wrong" are underrated sometimes.

If you're suggesting that this release might have boot-floppies still,
no, I'm pretty sure that's not going to happen.

Please don't CC me, I'm reading the list.

You're using inofficial packages, so the quality might be worse than
Debian's packaging. (Theoretically of course, it could be better, too.)

By using command names like gcc-3.2, cpp-3.2, g++-3.2

I have a hard time believing this, but who knows...

The mount-point doesn't disappear just because you removed a line from
/etc/fstab. Removing the line makes sure that the partition doesn't get
mounted the next time the system is rebooted.

If you want to unmount it without rebooting (which seems likely), use the
"umount" command.

Afterwards there is an empty directory (the so-called mount point) in your
/mnt tree. You can remove it safely, if you don't plan to use it anymore.

No, you don't have to reinstall. Reinstalling hardly ever fixes anything.

If the question is, what do people think of having a projected release
date, I for one quite like it. Gives me something to look forward.

A couple of technical questions about the release:

- first of all, is it possible to get one's hands on debian-installer
-- and does it largely work at this point? I'd love to try it out.

- and second: has a decision been made regarding the version of gcc
that sarge will be compiled with? Is this question related to the
delays in getting gnome2.2 and kde 3.1 in sarge (referred to earlier
by Colin, whose mail I accidentally deleted)?

best,
matt

Try running it from a terminal, any error messages? If not, try running
it with strace and post the last 20 or so lines of output.

Re: mbox--> maildir with getmail, procmail, mutt

2003-08-21 Thread Matt Price
> So, I converted everything over and it seems to have mostly gone
well, except that mutt seems to be poorly configured now. I can't
seem to get mutt to naviagete from one maildir to another -- it keeps
dumping me out in message files, and not seeing the .foldername ifles
that mb2mh generated. On the other hand, if I start with mutt -f
=Maildir/.IN.debian (for instance) I can get my mail. Any
suggestions?

-

sorry about the unwrapped line.

I think the problem may actually be more with procmail than with mutt
-- I'm not sure it was sending messages to the right mailboxes. For
the moment I've gone back to mbox, will return to this problem when I
have more time.

thanks again,

matt
