intel scsi controller srczcr

2004-05-15 Thread John Hitzfelder

> > Pretty new to linux here, so bear with me.

Ok. I have to get debian on this machine with this raid controller - no
other drives in the box. It will be the first linux box for this company
and I've been the linux evangelist here... and I'm needing help.

I've pretty much given up on getting drivers/modules for this controller for
current kernels, but if anyone has any, that would be great.

This email is instead to pursue the other line of action: using the disks
provided by intel to get a base system up and running and then upgrade the
kernel from there.

That still has problems.
The intel controller comes with a cd that makes a set of install floppies:
rescue, root and driver modules for the controller. They are at kernel
2.2.19-compact.

I boot with the rescue disk, partition the drive, install root, swap and
lilo on a boot partition.

The problem comes with installing a base system from that.

I've tried to find the base system for that kernel online - but
archive.debian.org is down and I'm not finding others.
I did find an iso of potato that I burned to CD but it was the wrong kernel
apparently - 2.2.26

I also tried to apt upgrade with a sources.list I created, but apt isn't
installed yet.

Any help getting a base system on that? Or how to upgrade with the little
bit that is loaded?

Yeah, me too. Usually the safest thing is to wait a week or two and try
again, but I usually end up with some kind of dependency tangle right when I
need to install some new package or other. So I have to hack through it to
get things working again. (I should figure out how to de-update and just
step back a notch, but I'm too lazy.)

Broken ALSA packages a bit back, for example. I had to get the source and
hack one of the scripts just to finish doing an install. Annoying.

But it does happen. That's why they call it "Unstable" or "Testing" after
all.

I just take comfort from remembering how much worse this was with an RPM-based
distro. "In order to satisfy dependencies, you must remove: kernel,
XFree86, your spleen, your CPU, and your neighbor's dog."

Problems remain using Java apps

2004-05-15 Thread David Baron
I now have java on path, JAVA_HOME, CLASSPATH. Problems remain.

Netbeans, which one worked, then kicked me off X, now get the following:
Error occurred during initialization of VM
java/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: java/lang/Object

Another swing app does what Netbeans used to: Cannot convert some string ...
and then kicks me off X. I cannot save the whole message because I am kicked
out.

Here are env entries:
PATH=/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/games:/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_04/bin
JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_04/jre
CLASSPATH=/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_04/jre/lib/rt.jar

Would those "dummy" packages for Sun Java make an diffrence?
I am running Debian, 2.6.5-4 kernel, KDE. Jave is from Sun, RPM converted to
DEB and installed.

Welcome to the [EMAIL PROTECTED] [1] mailing list. This is a
public, non-moderated list for the discussion of use and support of the
Debian operating system [2].

"apt" is a package within the Debian operating system. It contains tools
which facilitate the installation, removal, and manipulation of other
software applications within a Debian system.

To remove apt [3] from your Debian system, from a root prompt execute:
# apt-get --purge remove apt
You will see a warning message indicating that the operation you are
about to perform is dangerous and could leave your Debian system
inoperable. You should not proceed unless you are certain you understand
what you are doing.

To remove an extraneous Filesystems from your computer I recommend you
install the parted [4] package. For a thorough discussion of the use and
limitations of parted, see also the parted-doc [5] package.

As an interim solution you may wish to consult the manual for the "dd"
command. To destroy an extraneous Filesystem and its contents, I believe
from a root prompt you might execute:
# dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hd[a][n]

Where for [a][n] is substituted the alphanumeric-numeric pair denoting
the hard disk partition on which the extraneous Filesystem resides.

**Warning** This will destroy all data in and including the Filesystem
residing on the specified partition.

Please note that executing either of these commands against the
Filesystem containing your Debian system may leave your Debian system
unbootable or otherwise inoperable. It is seriously recommended that you
not do this unless you are certain you understand what you doing.

I sadly didn't keep a record of what I did, but I had similar trouble with
that package. I wound up removing console-common and a couple of other
things, upgrading, and then re-installing them afterwards. Something like
that. It eventually worked. Not a corrupt download but a subtly broken
package I think.

Just a guess. I've noticed symlinks ftping manually into mirrors. Try
symlinking so that stable --> woody and see if that fixes it.

apt-get on a local mirror

2004-05-15 Thread krf
Finally got apt-mirror to work.   I got the entire i386 site at
ftp.fi.debian.org mirrored on a USB drive.  Now I am trying to do a simple
local apt-get on a test machine.

My mirror is located at /mnt/debmirror/ which has the mirror, skel, and var
subdirs in it.

I made a very simple sources.list file just for test, copied from the Man page
and changed to match my path. like so...
       deb file:/mnt/debmirror/mirror/ftp.fi.debian.org/debian stable main
contrib non-free
       deb file:/mnt/debmirror/mirror/ftp.fi.debian.org/debian unstable main
contrib non-free
       deb-src file:/mnt/debmirror/mirror/ftp.fi.debian.org/debian unstable
main contrib non-free

When I run apt-get update to build my indexes I get the following errors in
part...

What it appears to be looking for is this...

The actual path is this...
/mnt/debmirror/mirror/ftp.fi.debian.org/debian/dists/woody/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz

It looks like something isn't translating "stable" into "woody"

I assume that my sources.list file is wrong but so far haven't managed to fix

dd bs=2x80x18b of=/dev/fd0 if=/tmp/floppy.image
If I try to write floppy.image back to /dev/fd0 with a blank
but formatted disk in it, the resulting disk appears to have the same
data on it but it won't boot and the Linux mount command complains
about bogus FAT's.
Is there any sort of Linux analysis tool that works in the
command mode that might tell me what is wrong with the copies I am
making?
These disks are not copy-protected at all and one can use the
comm server to make new copies but this is not as convenient as using
a computer to manage backups.
It would be nice to be able to mount the disks, but being able
to make a binary copy to and from an image would be fine, also.
Also, the problem may lie in the way I use superformat to
format a totally blank diskette. I do:
  superformat /dev/fd0 --verify_later sect=18 cyl=80
I think what I need is to format all the tracks with no FAT.
The PDP-11 disk has a different FAT structure, at least that is what I
think is happening.

There may be nothing wrong with the copiewd image, or with the disk once
you copy the image onto it. Formatting (with, or without the FAT) is
irrelavant since copying back the image with dd will overwrite the
formatting. The question is: Why do you think that you should be able
to boot a PC with software written for a PDP-11? I don't even know if
what you have is a bootable disk, but even if it is it would only boot
on a PDP-11.

BTW the last time I worked with a PDP-11 wan an 11/15 and that was back
when I was in college in the late 1970's. I can't even find a PDP-11
for sale on E-Bay.

None of the lines in my /etc/passwd start with +, but in in a file thus
so I get identical output with "sed '/^+/Q'".

That one seems useful, because "sed '0,/^+/d'" does not include the line
starting with +, and I can see no way to express the address
start,up-to-but-not-including-regex.

I think I can see how -n would be useful once you start using hold
space, but at that point I usually just move to perl.

Try this:

  sed -n '/PATH/p' /etc/profile

Compare that to the version without -n. There are many times where I
don't want the default action to be print. If I were to think of it a
little more I could come up with real examples of using it.

  sed -n '/^+/q;p' /etc/passwd
  sed -n '/^+/,$p' /etc/passwd

[NIS/YP uses a line with a '+' to denote pulling in the mapfile right
there in the middle of the file.]

No, but when I installed KNOPPMYTH, based upon KNOPPIX, the other day
I saw that directory tree there. The system was a strange mix of
distro components. I can see why people who install KNOPPIX have
trouble maintaining or upgrading it. It is a really sweet live cd

Always use the bf24 image. If the bf24 is old by today's standards
then the bf22 image is extremely ancient.

What exactly does this mean? By default Debian has no automatic
detection. None whatsoever. No devices are ever recognized. So your
statement confuses me. You might have installed the discover or
discover2 packages. Those implement automatic hardware detection.
But the boot disk is too early for that.

I am not familiar with the srczcr device. Perhaps someone else will
know something about it. Google found it here for me. Looks spiffy.

  http://www.intel.com/design/servers/buildingblocks/srczcr/

It says "Debian* Linux 2.2r6" specifically in the supported list which
looks good.

How is a floppy involved in whatever proceedure you are trying to do?
Are you installing from floppies? Can you install from a cdrom
instead? Installing from a cdrom is much easier.

I can't deduce what you are trying to do here.

I think you may have been lucky that the kernel on your sid and sarge
boxes were the same. Because the initial ram disk (initrd) contains
kernel modules which the kernel will load at boot time. If the
modules are for a different kernel then they won't work. So copying
an initrd around from machine to machine that has different kernels
won't normally work as far as I know.

Why would that be too simple? I think it very likely the

Those seem strange to me. Did you add them yourself? If so I would
back out your changes. I do not believe they are needed.

> but they seem to be having no effect. For example,
>
> $ modprobe eth0
> FATAL: Module eth0 not found.

You are mistaken about what is a kernel module and what is a kernel
device. The eth0 name is a kernel device. It is a networking device
name the kernel uses identify the first network interface card (nic).
It is not a module name.

Kernel module names identify software drivers for particular types of
devices. Such as e100 for an Intel or 8139too for a realtek. Kernel
modules can be loaded with 'modprobe', not devices.

What are you trying to get working? Both networking and sound? What
is the output of 'lspci'.

  lspci

That is the critical information to determine what you need to do
here. If I assume right from your notes above you need to load the
following into /etc/modules.

  modprobe i810_audio && echo i810_audio >> /etc/modules
  modprobe 3c59x  && echo 3c59x  >> /etc/modules

The above should do it. Or use the 'modconf' command to do basically
the above inside of a guided environment.

  modconf

Linux 2.2 won't have the e100 driver. You need 2.4.20 at least for
that. Get one of the more recent kernels from woody-proposed-updates.

I think he is using a kernel older than 2.4.19. Probably 2.4.18? I
guess that because 2.4.18 does not include an e1000 driver. The e1000
driver was introduced into the 2.4.19 kernel.

> It sounds like you may be using a kernel that was configured without

I believe the e1000 driver was introduced in the 2.4.19 kernel. So
the 2.4.18 from woody would not have it by default. Of course it
could be compiled for 2.4.18 as a module. But using a newer kernel
which included it already would be easiest to recommend. It is
usually about here where I suggest getting the kernel from the
woody-proposed-updates area. A not quite official update area and
very useful.

  deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ woody-proposed-updates main contrib

I would not upgrade from there. Just install the kernel that you
want, then comment that line out for the future. I always install the
kernel tuned for my architecture, k7 for an athlon, and so forth.

I guess it depends how you track unstable. If you use aptitude (and
possibly apt-get upgrade as well) you can configure to ensure you are
given the opportunity to abort the upgrade if there are grave bugs in
any packages. You can then limit the upgrade to the unaffected
packages.

I don't regard myself as any sort of expert but have been
tracking unstable since December; apart from one calamity born of my
ignorance, I've had a fully functioning system ever since. If things
are broken in unstable you only need to carry on with your working
version of any package until the upgraded one is fixed. Fixes in sarge
generally take a lot longer than in sid.

Clive

Apparently only p and P print *anything* if -n is in effect; which means
no other command has any visible side effects; you can only store the
result in hold space, until you print it with p.

Is that the basic approach? And isn't perl better for program-y things
anyway?

to print the current pattern space? You can write a sed script that only

sed -n seems to make all the other commands sed can do besides 'p' have

If you are going to do that, make sure that the rule is
KERNEL="mixer*", SYMLINK="%k"

That is, you remove the NAME statement, since udev will only use one
NAME statement pr node.
Also, there is a bug current udev (024) where the udev rule parser will
stop at the first rule with NAME, so you have to make sure your rules
comes up before the rule with the NAME statement (although, this might
have been fixed in the debian version of udev... I really should convert
over one of these days).

emacs and xresources

2004-05-15 Thread John L Fjellstad
I'm trying to set up the font size with emacs (latest in testing).
I put this in my ~/.xresources file:
emacs*font: -ETL-Fixed-Medium-R-Normal--14-140-72-72-C-70-ISO8859-1

This works fine, when I'm running gnus, but not when I'm running normal
emacs. That is, I created a menu for gnus, which has this command line:
/usr/bin/emacs -f gnus-no-server

I noticed that for emacs, it is started with this command line:
/usr/bin/emacs21

Both links to /usr/bin/emacs21-w, so I'm not sure why only the first
instance picks up the new xresource, and not the second instance.
(there is a problem with my ISP at the moment, so I can't access
bugs.debian.org, so if the solution is mentioned there, please copy it
here. Thanks).

apt-get update failing -- sites down?

2004-05-15 Thread David Baron
For several days now, update fails. Gets to the 37% mark and then waits for
headers, starting around ftp://ftp.gwdg.de. Many of these yield their
precious headers but then it stops. After this, site after site times out.
German Debian sites also fail after this.

:
How can you DELETE OLD MESSAGES IN MUTT? You can have your
.muttrc set up to automatically do this. I have my debian
mailing list messages delete after a period of time by adding
the following to my .muttrc file. I also have read debian list
messages move after I read them... This only means I have to
manually enter the old folder for mutt to manage the deletions
for me.
mbox-hook =spam /home/mperry/oldmail/spamread
mbox-hook =debianstuff /home/mperry/oldmail/debianread
That moves the read mail to another folder... and then
folder-hook /home/mperry/mail/spam 'push D~r>10d!~F\n'
folder-hook /home/mperry/oldmail/debianread 'push D~r>30d!~F\n'
Here it automatically deletes messages older than 30 days. See
the manual (/usr/share/doc/mutt/html) for more info.

dist-upgrade -- now can't log in via X?

2004-05-15 Thread Will Trillich
i'd love to have some suggestions on how i borked my wdm

get a black screen for a few seconds, and then i'm back at the

very odd. i changed sources.list to point to "sarge" and then
did

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

and after several iterations (coupla dependency issues arose and
were flattened via "apt-get -f install" and several more
dist-upgrades) all seemed well. (still need to upgrade
postgresql databases by hand, but that's complicated enough i
expect intervention necessary, there.)

i've got only two packages held back now (docbook-to-man and mc)
and most everything is working... except i can't log in at the X
window "display manager" prompt.

i've tried "/etc/init.d/wdm restart" and i get the login dialog;
i can choose options on the menus and when i enter a password,
the screen goes black for a few seconds and then -- poof, right
back to the login screen again.

the logs mention font trouble such as

Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/, removing from list!
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/, removing from

is that pertinent?

That has nothing to do with the original poster's problem. The original
poster mentioned some locale-related warnings which weren't fatal; your
problems are fatal but entirely different.
It looks rather as if locale-gen is running out of memory and being
killed by the kernel? Check your syslog.
This is true. Because I could not generate locales I had the OP's
problems *also*, but, in my case, the _cause_ was a memory problem.
Especially generating UTF-8 locales seems to require an inordinate
amount of memory. On the little (32 M) machine I ran it on I could get
it to work after creating a 100 M swap file (smaller sizes did not work).

I do not know what locale-gen (or more exactly localedef) actually
generates, but the only thing I could find was a file called
/usr/lib/locale-archive, which is only 1.5 M. Couldn't localedef be
programmed in such a way that the generating process uses less memory,
warns in advance in case of insufficient memory, or something like that?
  Does it use recursion, perhaps?

gdb says gd2lib currupt in debian stable woody

I get the following any time I try to run a php script either from

debian stable (woody)

Everything else in gd2 works but for some reason the ImageCopy()
function in the php lib does not work at all, so I got out gdb and
ran some tests.

I apt-get removed the gd2 lib and installed the noxpm version, then
reinstalled php4-gd2 and the rest , they said they had to have the

And so I ran the test again after it failed, and I get the exact same
thing. Is anyone else getting these errors? Everything else in gdlib
is working fine but its this one function that seems to be bad, using
the most updated and official libs available.

If anyone has any ideas or has a way to fix this please let me know,
I am using only official packages.

Very close. Just invert that command.

You can combine the grep and the sed and then only process the file
once.

  sed -n "/1083300070/,$p" updatelog.sql > updatelog2.sql

That also removes the arbitrary 9 marker, which is pleasing.

Ah, geez. A day doesn't go by lately that someone isn't declaring war

I have Applix on my machine. It installed off their CD in rpm format.
It works fine in Woody. It worked fine on SuSE when I was running

Besides, we've already got enough top-posters to be consigned to Hell

system.kdeglobals - which package?

2004-05-15 Thread Jake Maul
Howdy,
I've wound up in a situation where I don't have the file
/etc/kde3/system.kdeglobals for some reason (likely I lost it in that
recent snafu with kdelibs4 postinst deleting it).

The problem is I can't figure out how to get it back. It's not owned by
anything (which one would expect of a conffile), but it also doesn't
appear to be listed as a conffile for anything. Apparently it used to be
a conffile from one of the kdelibs packages (kdelibs, kdelibs4,
kdelibs-data, etc... don't remember which). So where does it come
from, and more importantly, how do I get it back?

(BTW, running Debian-unstable, originally installed from a testing
mini-cd using d-i from 4/13/2004).

Thanks,
Jake

As other people have written doing this is not a good thing. Put
yourself in the other position. I have a .deb file from Debian. I
want to install it on a RH system. Should I insist that you must use
dpkg to install it there? That would be just as silly as insisting
the reverse. A native packaging is always best.

A real example might help. On Debian only one MTA (mail transport
agents) can be installed at the same time. Installing a different one
pushes out the previous one. This makes it easy to switch between
MTAs. Just install a different one. Have sendmail installed?
Install postfix. Sendmail is removed as Postfix is added leaving
Postfix as the active MTA. Want to go back? Install the previous MTA
of choice. Everything works. It is very nice.

On later RH they use the alternatives for /usr/sbin/mta making it a
symlink to the currently active MTA such as one of sendmail or
postfix. It is possible to have multiple MTAs installed but only one
of them active[1]. This is a completely different method of managing the
current MTA. And after installation you must adjust the alternatives
and other things or your desired selected MTA is not configured. On
RH 7.3 (don't know about later versions) postfix has a lower priority
than sendmail for example.

Installing a package from a different system will not be written to
handle the other system's management methods. This is completely
outside the scope of just a package installation tool like dpkg or rpm
or even a dependency aware tool like apt or yum but encompasses the
larger problem of system policy. There are issues of naming
conventions and other such things to be taken into consideration.

I feel that the system policy which describes how packages
interoperate is where Debian is clearly ahead of the competition.

Bob

[1] Why have multiple MTAs installed? Only one can really be active.
It just causes problems. But this is legacy from RH usage. On RH at
bare metal install time is the only time you can guarantee the
dependencies are all resolvable. So RH users have been encouraged to
install everything from the CD at installation time regardless of the
sensibility of that because later they won't be able to do so. This
required RH to facilitate this using the Debian alternatives as a way
to have multiple MTAs installed at the same time but only one
operating. I see that as a hack on a hack.

I'm not sure but you either don't have the framebuffer support enabled
in the kernel or the wrong one or the driver isn't loaded. Check once

your "/dev/fb0" isn't a framebuffer device.

I would propose that as the first step: If this fails, then you can try

From you description it doesn't look like a bug directly in the
forcedeth driver: Perhaps a problem with a shared interrupt, or the vesa

of the vesa registers.

Could you post lspci -vxx from both before and after loading forcedeth.
Or try bios settings that sound like Plug-N-Play aware OS. Or try ACPI

which one do you use? Try to boot with "acpi=off", "pci=noacpi", etc.)

We have a rack of I forget which part number of HP Netserver 2000
machines and they run the stock Debian woody kernels fine. However,
we have upgraded them to later kernels in order to generally upgrade
and simplify networking.

There is a choice of networking available, either Intel or Broadcom,
and depending upon what you have you may want to make modifications.
If Intel then you want to use the e100 driver if possible. It is an
add-on module in the 2.4.18 kernel. In later kernels it is in the
stock linux distribution. The eepro100 is available in 2.4.18. But
the eepro100 driver has some known issues under heavy load which can
drop it offline. Restarting networking with the eepro100 puts it back
online but best to use the e100 and avoid the problem. The Broadcom
in the 2.4.18 kernel needs the bcm5700 driver compiled as an add-on
module. In later kernels it is available in the stock linux kernel as
the tg3 module.

Pretty much a good test, yes.

I have Debian Sarge on a cheapass POS VIA (I didn't even know VIA made
CPUs...) with a cheapass POS Syntax mobo with on-board VIA everything. Total
garbage. It works fine.

I have it on a P4-2.0 GHz with a cheapass POS PC Chips mobo with on-board
Intel everything. More garbage. It works fine too. For this one I had
trouble with i845 video because Debian's XFree86 wasn't the latest bleeding
edge version a few months ago. Now it's no problem.

Knoppix worked on this board before Debian did, so I'd say Knoppix is a pretty
fair test of what's possible.

Well, that's all rather misleading, I think. Nothing ever makes it "into
stable." When stable is stable, stable stays stable. When was the last time
a package made it from Sid into Woody?

The descriptions of the Debian Way make it sound like that happens, but it
doesn't. Packages "make it into stable" all at once, and after they're
there, they're frozen in time forever. Security and bug fixes, yes, but the
version of libflummy is chiseled in stone pretty much for eternity
thereafter. The way this is usually described just doesn't reflect the
reality of it.

Yes. Although if it doesn't work straight away, it may not mean

Modules look OK.

Test 1, is aplay -l

Does it show anything?

Test 2 is to try as root. Look at who owns /dev/snd/ and company. It
*should* be root:audio, and your user *should* be in the audio group.

Test 3, make sure artsd or jackd aren't running if you're trying to play with
something that can't work through one or the other of those sound daemons.

Finally, ever since a couple upgrades ago, my mixer has been completely
fubared. I have to get PCM audio working by turning up some kind of 3D
Surround thing, my master volume doesn't work, and I can no longer pick which
channel I want to be the record source. I don't know if my soundcard is
failing, or if someone at ALSA is smoking too much weed. It's a real pain in
the ass. If something like this is biting you, try turning up every obscure,
bizarre little slider and see if you get noise that way.

Re: Cron fails to run

2004-05-15 Thread David
I have decided that the problem must be caused by a problem between cron
and postfix. I have postfix installed on this machine and the stalled
processes include a pipe between cron and postfix (sendmail).

Two questions. Has anyone else experienced this and come up with a fix?
or, does anyone know how to change the mail settings for cron?

I am getting the cron emails, so the problem is not complete
incompatiblility, but the processes aren't ending cleanly and exiting.
What I can't figure out is how to change the cron mailer settings that
result in the following command:

/usr/sbin/sendmail -i -FCronDaemon -odi -oem root

Any help greatly appreciated!

David

ALSA ok, but no sound

2004-05-15 Thread Joost De Cock
Hi list,

I'm trying to set up alsa on my Dell latitude d800 laptop. I'm running a custom
kernel, since I couldn't get the NVIDIA module working with any stock debian
kernel, and I need them for my WXGA screen.

Anyway, I managed to compile the needed modules and load them, here's an lsmod
snippet:
Module Size Used byTainted: P
snd-seq39984 0 (autoclean)
prism2_cs 69776 2

And /proc/asound seems fine to:
random:/usr/share/sounds# cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [I82801DBICH4 ]: ICH - Intel 82801DB-ICH4
 Intel 82801DB-ICH4 at 0xf4fff800, irq 11
random:/usr/share/sounds# cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.3.
Compiled on May 14 2004 for kernel 2.4.21-rc2-ac2 (SMP) with versioned symbols.

Unfortunately, no sound is produced at all. I've double checked that the sound
isn't muted (with alsamixer) but it's ok. PLaying a sound doesn't give any
errors either.

Any idea how I can make sure the thing actually works?

TIA

joost

I started kde yesterday in order to try to resolve a similar issue - I thought
I'd then be able to read the config files kde had written, but I can't find
them. However, I have got an arrangement I can live with now, inasmuch as
the keyboard has the same characters on it that show up on the screen. I
failed to get the euro symbol so far...

On my system, locale now shows
LANG=en_GB
LC_CTYPE="en_GB"
...etc...
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_GB"
LC_ALL=

>

I have no file called i18n anywhere on the system - plenty of directories and
filenames including 'i18n', but all in /usr/share, var/lib and var/cache.
Nothing in /etc and nothing in /home -- so whatever kde configured is not
that.

This particular laptop was a mepis rather than a knoppix install. I have a
desktop that originally came from knoppix, and it does have
the /etc/sysconfig/i18n file. I'll fiddle with that and see if I learn
anything. BTW do you know how to read in a newly edited version without
rebooting the whole system?

No, there is no change in root argument.
Of course you can define your partitions on different ways.

Wrong options.

You should not need it.
mkinitrd -o /boot/initrd.img-2.6.5custom 2.6.5-1-686

Keyboard and locale problems

2004-05-15 Thread David W.E. Roberts
Hi,

I have just done a hard disc install of Knoppix 3.3 which gives me Debian
2.4.24-xfs.

I am having problems with my graphics card (Matrox MGA Millenium) and so
cannot run a GUI on the box itself.

This means that I miss out on all the graphical configuration tools which
come with the KDE desktop, and I have to manage the system remotely using an
X-Server on my Windows PC.

First problem - can't find any obvious X (or even non-X) configuration tool
widgets to automate configuration (such as found under KDE or like
'linuxconf' under RedHat).

Second problem - I am stuck with a US keyboard layout and a UK keyboard.

I am trying to change the default 'locale' settings in /etc/sysconfig, but I
can't seem to get the settings right.

[BTW why is the configuration file named 'i18n'?]

>From browsing man pages I think it should be 'en_uk' or 'en_UK'; however if
I fire up a new xterm 'locale returns:

g# locale
locale: Cannot set LC_CTYPE to default locale: No such file or directory
locale: Cannot set LC_MESSAGES to default locale: No such file or directory

LC_NAME="en_UK"
LC_ADDRESS="en_UK"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_UK"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_UK"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_UK"

My i18n configuration file contains:

:/etc/sysconfig# cat i18n
LANG="en_UK"
COUNTRY="uk"
LANGUAGE="uk"
CHARSET="iso8859-1"

The original was:

:/etc/sysconfig# cat i18n.old
LANG="C"
COUNTRY="us"
LANGUAGE="us"
CHARSET="iso8859-1"
XMODIFIERS=""

Any assistance gratefully received; I have been spoiled by automated
configuration tools and going back to editing text configuration files is
causing me some pain :-)

That's what I thought most likely, just that Googling for "chipster

a virus using those fake user names, so I was wondering if anyone else

Do you get a blank screen straight away, or do you get some text bootup

No, but you I think you could use Postfix with MySQL, then use any
IMAP-compatible email client to interact with it. I know it's not quite
as direct as you might like, but I guess you'll still get most of the
advantages of using a database.
Otherwise, you'll probably have to hack an email client to talk SQL...

No, cdrecord works fine with ide-cdrom. Check the list archives - this has

I ran into the problem that later 2.6 kernels have been causing hangs
on the bus and/or the machine when I try to scan or burn with cdrecord.
The solution is to disable DMA on your CD burner.

Files burned on CDRW on FreeBSD box can't be copied to Debien box

2004-05-15 Thread Stephen Liu
Hi all folks,

Debian unstable
FreeBSD 5.2

I used "burncd" burning data files on a CDRW as root on a FreeBSD box. After
burning, files can be copied from CDRW to any directory on the FreeBSD box.
But they can't be copied to Debian box, saying that I have no permission to
copy files. However in fact the files are copied to Debian box. On the
Debian box I tried to mount the CDRW as root as well as user with the same
result. Kindly advise how to rectify this problem

TIA

intel scsi controller srczcr

2004-05-15 Thread John Hitzfelder

Hello,

Posted this yesterday but can’t find it or any
response – sorry if I missed it or the spam filter ate it.

Pretty new to linux here, so bear with me.

Trying to install on a server with intel scsi controller
srczcr.  I’m using woody/debian3.0r1 cd image to get started.

I try this with no boot arguments or by specifying kernel
2.4 using bf24 – same result.

The bios recognizes the scsi and I have the raid configured
as required.  Of course it is not recognized.

I try to load the module for the driver using either a cd
built from the intel scsi cd or downloaded from intel support (link below) but
on either case, the install routine says ‘can’t load the
floppy’.

The message from dbootstrap says ‘unable to mount the
floppy, can’t continue’.

The floppy is accessed.  Using the little shell on
alt-f2, I can cd to the floppy, but it appears empty (might be my ignorance
here, all that is listed is root created today when I ls –al).

Thanks – any help is appreciated.

John

Hi,

I found some information on getting the tablet to work in the console
via gpm[1], however most of the links are broken. This includes
information on setting the correct repeater, allowing you to use the gpm
repeater device under X.

There is further information about the correct GPM types at[2]. This
seems to suggest that `mainstream' gpm has the correct driver built-in,
although it mentions that a modified X driver is needed to make sense of
the repeater.

If you cannot obtain a pre-built, modified X driver for your
computer architecture that you are willing to trust, you will need the
source for the driver and the X source in order to build it.

I doubt that versions 2.6.x (x > 3) provide any more support for the
tablet than 2.6.3 does, but I have not checked this myself. You need to
scour the changelogs at a mirror of www.kernel.org to be sure.

Drive letters are a really bad idea; Unix doesn't have them. You can use
'mount --bind' with Linux 2.4 and above to pretend that bits of the
filesystem are the same as other bits, if you like.

Perhaps you forgot to make the script executable?

Much simpler just to add a link in rc2.d for ssh, though; you could even
use 'dpkg-reconfigure ssh'.

'*' is a metacharacter to the shell: if you'd happened to have any files
in the current directory whose names started with '^ii.' for whatever
reason, or if you had the shell option 'nullglob' set, then "grep ^ii.*"
would have gone wrong. You may feel this is unlikely, but it's good
style to quote metacharacters nonetheless.

There are no metacharacters in ^ii alone, so quoting there is
unnecessary.

That applies to Debian packages, but not to third-party products being
ported to Debian. The usual approach for those is to build for stable
and deal with other problems if and when they arise.

That has nothing to do with the original poster's problem. The original
poster mentioned some locale-related warnings which weren't fatal; your
problems are fatal but entirely different.

It looks rather as if locale-gen is running out of memory and being
killed by the kernel? Check your syslog.

BTW, why "grep '^ii.*'". WHat does the ".*" usefully add? and the single
quotes? I expected, and got, the same response with either or both omitted.

Root: mkinitrd ... Permission denied. (?)

2004-05-15 Thread Adam Felix Bogacki

Hi, at the risk of being
tiresome (to myself if no one else) ...

I apt-graded to kernel-image-2.6.5-1-686 successfully, but after the
next dist-upgrade - which 'upgraded' the kernel-image - I found reboot
gave me a kernel panic

"VFS: Cannot open root device "hdb5" or unknown-block (0,0)

Please append a correct "root= " boot option

Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown block (0,0)"

Googling around has suggested that 2.6.5 has changed the parsing of the
"root= " boot  argument.

I rebooted with the rescue disk (2.4.8-bf2.4), which is missing its
modules dependency file (modules.dep), but now find

"Tux:~# /usr/sbin/mkinitrd -m /boot/initrd.img-2.6.5-1-686 -o
2.6.5custom

/usr/sbin/mkinitrd line 1: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.5-1-686: Permission
denied"

What am I missing here ?
