Magic for OpenOffice (file)

2004-05-24 Thread Magnus Therning
A quick search in Google didn't reveal any solution (only found one
reference, in Japanese).

 $ file -i file.sxw
 file.sxw: application/x-zip

It would be really nice if 'file' could give proper the correct type for
OpenOffice documents. Anyone who has an entry for /etc/magic that make
sit happen?

If you don't like the name your ISP gives you, you might even be given a
different name every time you re-connect, you might be interested in the
ez-ipupdate package. It will automate the updating of your IP with
several free DNS services.

Register a nice name with one of these services, install ez-ipupdate,
and then make sure that your FQDN is proper (/etc/hosts is the file to
modify).

Removing gForge --- can I overcome 'permanent corruption of your debconf and package databases'?

2004-05-24 Thread Lucas Barbuto
Hi Debian Users,

I've recently got into some trouble with the gforge package. Namely, it
didn't install properly, now I can't remove it. Specifically, the
packages gforge-shell-ldap and gforge-ldap-openldap can't be
uninstalled, leaving apt in an unusable state. I have submitted a bug
report for gforge-shell-ldap to which the maintainer hasn't replied,
however, he has replied to a similar bug (relating to the installation
of gforge-ldap-openldap) in which he's referred to my problem as
"permanent corruption of your debconf and package databases".

I'm hoping someone can help me find a hack/work-around for this problem,
or at least give me some idea of how I might be able to work through it
because I'm lost.

Here's the relevant bug reports:

Bug #241389: Pre-removal script returns error exit status 5
Bug #237229: gforge-ldap-openldap: LDAP Configuration Failed

I'm running Sid. If anyone could give me an idea about this that would
be great. Or even just tell me if I'm going to have to wait for the
package maintainer to fix it. Or if it's un-fixable.

Thanks,

kernel compilation error

2004-05-24 Thread Rodney D. Myers
I'm attempting to compile a new kernel, using the HOWTO located here;

http://newbiedoc.sourceforge.net/system/kernel-pkg.html

I can get everything compiled, and installed according to the docs, with
one exception.

I cannot get the initrd file built/made/etc. Without that file, my
computer refuses to boot using the new kernel

I used these examples to build the deb package;
sudo make-kpkg --append-to-version=.052004 kernel_image
sudo make-kpkg --initrd --append-to-version=.052004 kernel_image

Thanks for the help

The problem isn't that "desired states" are kept in the status file, the
problem is that aptitude ignores the status file. The statuses are THERE,
saying that they shouldn't be doesn't make them go away.

Or are you saying that dpkg is what's broken? Let's see... dpkg is
base/required, aptitude is admin/optional. If aptitude's behavior were the
correct one, wouldn't those be reversed? The package description for dpkg
says:

Description: Package maintenance system for Debian
This package contains the programs which handle the installation and
removal of packages on your system.

That's not what aptitude's says. Aptitude's says "apt frontend". Sounds
even more like dpkg is the standard, and aptitude is just supposed to be a
front-end to that standard.

Aptitude's description also says, in part: "...dselect-like persistence of
user actions..." except it doesn't follow what dselect does. Dselect, of
course, is also base/required. Is there any other management tool in
base/required? Synaptic isn't. Gnome-apt isn't. Are there others? Those
are the ones that depend on libapt-pkg-libc6.

Aptitude's brokenness would *almost* be tolerable if it at least behaved
consistently betweeen the two interfaces it supports. I'd love to hear an
explanation of why the same tool behaves differently on such a fundamental
point depending on whether you're using the command-line vs the menu-driven
interface. It's certainly been the subject of several bug reports without
any concrete resolution other than "gee, it's too hard".

Finally... what aptitude does or doesn't do would be a non-issue if
everyone didn't try so hard to sell it as the replacement for every other
package management tool out there. All of us Debianites love to tell
people that apt-get is just something that was coded as a demonstration
tool... but that's what everyone sees and that's what we're known for. The
inconsistency between the tools is more than a little absurd.

Postfix question....

2004-05-24 Thread Steven Sheeley
I am running Debian 3.0 stable (woody) and have Postfix installed.

My Debain machine resides at 63.231.57.180

My personal machine resides at 63.231.57.177

I'm running a subnetted set of Static IP Addresses from my ISP on a DSL line.

Mail is flowing to and from the Debian box and the internet just perfectly fine.

I can reach the debian box with Outlook from my personal machine and pick up my email
just fine I can not, however, send it.
When I write an email and click on send, it times out.

Can anyone help me get Postfix configured right? I've been over the FAQ's and HOWTO's
but ain;t figuring it out.

you should have a FQDN hostname (fully-qualified domain name)
the remote SMTP server rejects you connection, because your machine
identifies itslef as "debian" which is not an existent hostname

change your hostname so as to have an FQDN hostname (host.domain.tld)

Yes and no. On hardware with built-in multi-stream playback (like in
your home PC), nothing special needs to be done.

For hardware without built-in multi-stream playback, ALSA provides a
software emulation (sort of), but it requires you to configure
/etc/asoundrc.

Here's what mine looks like (see below). The "pcm.!default" directive
should cause ALSA-aware applications to use the dmixer plugin that
provides the software mixing. Applications which supports only OSS
can participate also through the "aoss" application. "aoss "
should redirect the OSS-output BUT only if the application uses the
standard "open()" calls instead of "fopen()". For example, bzflag
version 1.10.4 does not work with aoss.

Hope that helps.

PostgreSQL doesn't care about /etc/passwd. The default client

Gee I must have missed something in the pg_hba configuration files.
IDENT is clearly the only authentication model used and sockets are not
used at all.

In the default configuration Debian's PostgreSQL doesn't listen on TCP/IP
sockets at all; it is only accessible locally through a Unix socket.

So the "tcpip_socket=yes" statement has nothing to do with TCP/IP
connection? While tcpip_sockets=no is the default from postgres, the
configuration file in Debian shows otherwise.

However, it is not accessible from any other network address (sockets
and localhost only).

And others have mentioned that the IDENT process usees the /etc/passwd
files for the authentication.

The "ident" authentication method does not imply the use of an ident server
process.
For local connections (the only connections available with the default
configuration), the "ident" authentication method uses getsockopt(...
SO_PEERCRED ...) and getpwuid(). Typically but not necessarily getpwuid()
consults /etc/passwd.
For TCP/IP connections (when enabled), the response given by the remote
ident server is used.
All of this that you say here regarding the access of IDENT servers
versus ident-ish calls to /etc/passwd is probably true (I don't have
enough information on the specifics to doubt you). As it appears in the
configuration files, both sockets and tcp/ip (localhost only) are
enabled, so it could be either one or both. All of which still denies
network access.

However, from postgres' own documentation, they clearly warn against the
use of IDENT servers as a means of authentication when accessing the
database over anything other than sockets or possibly localhost.

This kind of falls under the category of Monty Pythons the Chocolate
shop skit where you have the warning: "Danger: real live unboned crunchy
dead frog"

I fully understand that postgresql as configured is pretty much secure,
but the implication that this method of authentication can be applied to
non-localhost network connections might do better to carry a warning in
the configuration somewhere, even a README.Debian would be at least
something. It would be very easy for someone to just copy/paste/edit
and end up with a problem.

Re: kernel update

2004-05-24 Thread Luis Finotti
Thanks Juan, Clive and Alistair!

I successfully updated my kernel. I took the most
immediate way (with just apt-get and updating
lilo: "apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.18-386") and
everything seems to working.

(Now the Alsa drivers are another story...) :-)

I noticed that I do not have a source directory
"/usr/src/linux4.18-386" -- I do have the previous
"/usr/src/linux4.3". I could not find
anything similar anywhere. Was it erased? Do I need
it?

Thanks again!

Luis

Dear Debian user's.
My names is Emanuele, from Italy.
My system is:

Today I hane tried to install with synaptic, transcode package, required
for DVD-Rip software.

But there is an error in the install process.
Transcode required libmagik5.5.5 and witout it don't want install.
I have found libmagik with synaptic, but it is the 6.x version, and not
5.5.5.

Transcode package isn't compatible with 6.x library version and 5.5.5
don't exist any more.

I have contacted the author of libmagik / transcode packages without
reply for weeks.

Please help me.
I need to use transcode package on my system.

Not that I'm aware of. libesd0, esound, esound-clients, are installed, but I
don't think I'm using them. I don't use sounds in Gnome, and I don't see
anything related to esd with 'ps aux'. xmms is configured to use the OSS

All of it was *supposed* to be a commons. And at at least one stage,
it was. Dominant interests displaced the mechanism of the commons so
that the vast majority of the common administrators had no vote in
proceedings. Corporate greed, ably assisted by misinformed and
corrupt political entities, misappropriated the commons from the
majority of its rightful community owners, allowing only one factor
of the community to usurp the common ground. This is not a failure of
the commons, how can it be? The environment of the commons was not
permitted to operate, it answers more to the definition of grand
larceny on a national and international scale. All rationalised at
the time, by economics.

I should save this bit for posterity as an example of completely
blinkered thinking. This problem goes way back in time. The Mammoths
were driven to extinction this way, as were North American prairie
horses (until re-introduced by the Spanish) and no doubt other species
all over the globe. But hey, I guess it was corporate greed and
dominant interests that did them all in.

Corporate greed or dominant interests.
The concept of the fiscally based corporate entity didn't exist in the
time of the mammoth.
Horses didn't exist in North America before the European arrived either:-

In general, depending on the kernel configuration, you can do without
an initrd. However since the configuration of the new kernel doesn't
differ much from the old one, it could be that you must have an initrd
because essential components are compiled as modules. Another option is
that for your hardware the difference in the configuration of the old
and new kernels is important.
The new boot loader menu items didn't have the initrd lines because it
identified the new kernel as not requiring an initrd. Which is correct
since you didn't make-kpkg --initrd.

To quote Steve Langasek:

"As some of you appear to have already correctly deduced, there is a
compatibility problem with the version of the CUPS libs currently in
unstable. The libcupsys library is linked against an old version of
libgnutls, which causes two incompatible versions of this library to be
pulled in, leading to these crashes.

There were already bug reports about this problem with Samba 3.0.2a, but
it has become much more severe of an issue with 3.0.4. It is actually a
CUPS/libgcrypt bug, not a Samba bug, but I plan to keep these bugs open
and assigned to the samba package for the time being until those
problems can be sorted out. Fortunately, that should happen soon, as
the GNOME 2.6 packages include a libcupsys that's linked against the new
version of gnutls, and it's expected that the GNOME 2.6 packages will
begin moving into unstable (along with an updated samba package) any day
now.

In the meantime, one workaround may be to disable the use of cups for
printing. The other would be to downgrade to 3.0.2a until this can be
resolved."

I commented out the [printers] section because I'm not using it and
that worked as a temporary fix.

My only question is this: is this key documented somewhere, and how
would one ordinarially go about getting documentation on a registry key?
Probably not documented. I doubt MS would want people to know too much
about the registry.
[...]
That is one of the reasons I laugh at people who complain about the lack
of documentation for free software.
As with most documentation, free and proprietary, it's easy to find if
you know in advance what you're looking for. Going to www.microsoft.com
and entering "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Policies LocalProfile" into the search
box on the front page returns two hits, different pages with the same
content.
[snip]
In the Free Software world, the answer would be a manpage that documents
either the entire file structure, or the relevant subtree of a shared
structure. Of course, with GNOME rushing madly into fatal embrace of
the Registry, *and* abhorring manpages, all bets are off. But we'll
file our bugreports here in Debian land.
[1]
But, say, for an application or suite which owned a particular subkey,
I'd expect to see:
[2]
  - A full listing of keys.
  - Values.
  - Behaviors.
Anything less would be a documentation bug.
But you still need to know what you're looking for. In this case, using
the Microsoft reg key as an example, and assuming wonderful Free
Software documentation as you describe, you'd still need to know that
the relevant subkey is owned by "policies" rather than "login" or
"profile" or "active directory" or whatever, and that the setting you're
looking for is a local profile setting, even though the problem
manifests itself as a failure in roaming profiles.

Hmmm... Not sure where I'm going with this. I guess I'm just trying to
defend Microsoft from Roberto's implications that they would
intentionally leave things undocumented[3], and that free software
documentation is better than Microsoft's. As an often frustrated user
of both Microsoft and open software, I feel qualified to say that all
documentation sucks, and Microsoft in this particular instance doesn't
suck any worse than any other.

Randy
[1] This is why I'm moving as much as possible and practical from
Windows to OSS, because OSS is so much more ... open!

[2] I'm not so confident that I'd say I expected to see it, but I'd
certainly _like_ to see it. What I'd expect would be to be able to file
a bug report, and be able to dig through the source to figure it out,
and submit a contribution that would likely be accepted with thanks.
(See [1])

[3] Yes, I know -- they have and they do. But not in this case, and not
about in the registry in general. I've found that most every registry
key I've been curious about I've been able to find either from google
(there are many third-party registry documentation sites) or
microsoft.com. Of course, you need to know what the key is first, to
find it.

ALSA strangeness

2004-05-24 Thread Alex Malinovich
I'm getting some strange results with ALSA on my work machine. Running
kernel 2.6.6, (snd_intel8x0 module) ALSA works just fine. Unfortunately,
the ALSA device seems to have decided to become a FIFO. I can send 10
audio clips to it simultaneously, but they get played back in the order
they were received. This has the unfortunate side effect that if I'm
listening to a song on XMMS, I won't hear any sounds until after the
current song ends.

I had thought that all ALSA drivers had support for multiple audio
streams. Is this not the case? On my home PC, using kernel 2.6.4 and
ALSA (emu10k1 module) I can play multiple streams at once with no
problems. Any ideas? TIA.

Sorry, I took it for granted that I was reinstalling the Belkin Bulldog
software for linux which came with the UPS. It is the internal
programming in the Belkin UPS that is probably fried. The computer and
the Debian kernel and software were unscathed.

Hello Jake,

I had not specifically checked the old kernel with the apt-get upgrade
updates, so I just rebooted and did some more playing.

Sound does still work great, using the 2.4.20 kernel, i810_audio module,
esd & xmms. (Though using esd through artsdsp makes it very choppy.)

In the process I found 2.4.23 seems to give me the same problem as
2.4.25 and 2.4.26; xmms plays, but does it very, very slow. Something
must have been changed with the audio system in the kernel between
2.4.20 and 2.4.23. (Maybe the soundcore module, since both the oss
drivers and the alsa drivers do it.)

Thanks,
Jacob

Luis Finotti wrote:

nope...
the kernel is the "heart" of Linux, so you have to explicitly update it
since it's the most sensible part of the system

So, how does one update the kernel. Although my
computer is running fine, I wanted to install the alsa
drivers, and I think I'd need something like
"alsa-modules-2.4.16-386" or "kernel-headers-2.4.16".
(I can't find "kernel-headers-2.4.3".)
you can install an already compiled kernel with "apt-get install
kernel-image"

there you'll see a list of the available images, and then you do
"apt-get install kernel-image-"

but it's likely that this image does not have all the options you
like/need compiled ni by default

so it's better to download the kernel-source, and compile it yourself
with the options you like/need/want

you can compile the kernel in the traditional way or in the "debian way"
search for "debian kernel compile" in google and you''' find lots of
links on how to compile your kernel

Are there any risks in updating the kernel?
not if you know what you're doing :)

HD Regrets

2004-05-24 Thread
I spent all of Sunday engaged in the venture of cleaning
my /etc/fstab file.

I have two hard drives in my Linux box, /dev/hda1 and /dev/hdb2.
When I installed Knoppix, I learned that the installer will only
copy files to one disk. Modification of the .kconfig file is
possible to enable installation to two drives but ...
"a dollar short, a day late".

The operation consisted of changing /etc/fstab and my
disk structure so that the /home/$USER directories were located
on /dev/hdb1, not /dev/hda1. I created mkdir'ed the directories
/home-copy/$USER on hdb1 and cp'ed all dirs/files to
/home-copy/*. Then the original /home dir was rm -rf'ed,
"/home-copy" was mv'ed into "/home", /etc/fstab was edited
to reflect the new directory structure. I thought everything was OK.

I rebooted the box and when I logged in, /hdb1 did not exist.
To summarize, F'ing with the box for an inordinate amount of time
revealed that /dev/hdb1 was not being auto-mounted on bootup, only
/dev/hda1. I must manually "mount /dev/hdb1" to access the /home

My question is two-fold: 1) How do I cause /dev/hdb1 to automount

  2) Is there a shorter solution to copying

libhtml-mason-perl + perl 5.8.4 : Missing File::Glob.pm?

2004-05-24 Thread James Keasley
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi,
I'm playing with Perl's HTML-Mason module at the moment on my unstable box.

Right now, however, the config appears to be failing to work for some
reason. I have checked the bug reports, and there doesn't seem to be
anything related there at present.

In my apache/error.log it is complaining about being unable to access
the File::Glob.pm module. This is installed in /usr/lib/perl/5.8.4/File/
Glob.pm, so I am unsure why it is complaining. making a symlink in the
relevant /usr/share/perl directory has no effect either.

Can anyone help me solve this problem, or at least point me in the right
direction? Could it be a problem with Perl's @INC paths?

kernel update

2004-05-24 Thread Luis Finotti
Dear all,

It seems that my kernel is a rather old version:
-
% uname -a
Linux debian 2.4.3 #2 Sat Mar 31 11:29:19 CST 2001
i686 unknown
-

It seems that the newer versions are 2.4.16 or later.
I thought "apt-get update/upgrade" would upgrade the
kernel, but it seems that that's not the case. (I
don't have any updates there.)

So, how does one update the kernel. Although my
computer is running fine, I wanted to install the alsa
drivers, and I think I'd need something like
"alsa-modules-2.4.16-386" or "kernel-headers-2.4.16".
(I can't find "kernel-headers-2.4.3".)

Are there any risks in updating the kernel?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Best to all,

Luis

many people do you have? 'One thousand people, 3 hundred people, and
46 people'. Factor out people so that you only say it once and you
have 'One thousand, 3 hundred, and 46 people'.

Hmm. I never thought of it as a list, but you might have something
there.
To me (USA), "223,456" to me would be "two hundred twenty three
thousand four hundred and fifty six"; "123,000" would be
"one hundred and twenty three thousand" (or "a hundred and
twenty three thousand"); for a check for $123.45, I'd write it out
as "one hundred twenty three and 45/100 dollars."

Well, this kind of proves the point, does it not?
Which point?
It certainly does NOT prove a claim that "one hundred and twenty three"
means 100.23 and doesn't mean 123.
It does support the claim that it's like a list.
> You write out "one
hundred twenty three *and* 45/100 dollars". That is because you do not
want *any* confusion on the amount that will be drafted from your
account.
I think you are completely confused.
1. One reason I write that "and" is because "one hundred twenty
three 45/100 dollars" would make no sense.
2. One reason I didn't write the "and" in "one hundred and twenty
three" is because there was an "and" following it, and we write
"A, B, and C" and not (usually) "A and B and C."
(The reason is not because "one hundred and twenty three" would
mean anything other than 123.)
3. The fact that "one hundred and 45/100" or "one hundred and forty
five hundredths" means 100.45 can NOT be used to argue that "one
hundred and forty-five" doesn't mean 145 and means 100.45 instead.
There is a big difference between "forty five" and "forty
five hundredths."

(Actually, I think there official supposed to be hyphens in places
like "twenty-three thousand.")

FWIW I think you are right about hyphens.
I just wish I remembered better where they go and where they don't.

But, say, for an application or suite which owned a particular subkey,
I'd expect to see:

  - A full listing of keys.
  - Values.
  - Behaviors.

Anything less would be a documentation bug.

This would be stored someplace reasonable. Possibly cross-referencable
under "Registry Keys" or something in a documentation system (e.g.:
dwww, possibly a new manual section).

OK, having loaded the page here, it looks as if MSFT _are_ finally
headed in this direction. But it's interesting to note how little-known
or referenced this particular help subsystem is. My own search for
various keys didn't turn up anything remotely resembling this. Instead
we've got a mass of " tips", a few O'Reilly hacks &
annoyances books, and the like. Scattered suggestions, but no apparent
awareness of a canonical references.

There's also the slight issue that that's a W2K+3 ref and I'm working
XP, but I'll hunt for the other.

Peace.

Where do the various tools (dpkg, dselect, aptitude) stash their status
collections?

Seems there are two possible solutions, either of which might work,
neither jumps out at me as "right" or less klugy:

  1. Create a single standardized package status repository and have all
utilities modified to use / query / update it.

  2. Leave the current status file balkanization in place, but have each
of the major (or would all be better) package tools check to see if
there is a status file in place elsewhere, and either incorporate
its preferences, or warn the user. In the latter case, a way to
merge or apply changes from one format to the other would be
helpful. I'd be surprised if this didn't already exist.

Hrm. 1 would probably be less klugy, come to think. Though politically
rife.

The ps side is actually simplified from the command I've been using. I
wanted to illustrate the sleep pipe rather than the expressions used to
limit the process list. In practice, I filter out a few patterns which
*will* match (parents of the actual whois process), and I run the
command as a nonprivileged user (so the 'a' is unnecessary). So at best
I can shoot myself in my own foot.

The sleep actually provides additional insurance. The idea is to kill
long-lived processes. Most of the potential collateral damange will
have terminated from other causes before the kill is issued.

That is pretty cool, yeah ;-)

Again: sleep pretty much assures that this either won't happen, or
wouldn't be a bad thing.

Remember: the whole idea of running this is to clear out any processes
which are too long lived. A decent WHOIS query should return in 1-20
seconds, unless something's wrong. My 30 second sleep is a little on
the short side, but will be pretty safe in practice. Doubling that
would almost certainly avoid unintentional damage.

No. We practice the principle of least privilege here.

Thank you for your reply.

After I make do the following things, the nvidia-installer can run, but
I cannot still install the nvidia driver.

cd /usr/src/linux
make include/version.h

I do not know how to solve this problem, although someone say that the
solution is in the README file...

RROR: Unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.ko'. This is most likely
because the kernel module was built using the wrong kernel source files.
Please make sure you have installed the kernel source files for your
kernel; on Red Hat Linux systems, for example, be sure you have the
'kernel-source' rpm installed. If you know the correct kernel source
files are installed, you may specify the kernel source path with the
'--kernel-source-path' commandline option.
-> Kernel module load error: insmod: QM_MODULES: Function not implemented

insmod: cannot open /proc/ksyms No such file or directory
ERROR: Installation has failed. Please see the file
'/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for details. You may find suggestions
on fixing installation problems in the README available on the Linux
driver download page at www.nvidia.com.

Any suggestion?

I don't get it. Why would I use reiserfschk on this? The filesystem I
had before was ext3. And I have tried fsck.ext3 as well, but since the
inode table is overwritten by mkfs.reiserfs and the current filesystem
is reiserfs, it doesn't work. It's the ext3 filesystem I want to
recover.

I have no backup of this partition. This is because the partition is 100
GB of size, and it is not a critical disk, so I don't bother paying $150
for a backup device for this one.

However, it would still be worth some hours of research to try to
retrieve the old files. So please give me some advice of what to do.

and dont worry ... reiserfschk-3.6.14 doesn't always fix itself(reiserfs)

we use are barebones from supermicro (dual xeon, managment

we buy this stuff at our local pc supplier.

Considering that the 2.0 and 2.2 kernel trees are still being
maintained, and that there are servers out there running both,
I don't think you need to hurry to adopt 2.6 for fear of 2.4
being abandoned. That eventuality is probably a long way off.
So your transition should be driven by what you can get out
of it, and whether it's worth it to you.

I haven't tried it yet, because I keep seeing people (here and
on other lists) complaining about various problems; I wanna wait
until the rate of complaints drops enough, especially with regard
to latency issues. But when that happens, I'll switch promptly
because of various enhancements that are advertised to speed up
the desktop tremendously.

I personally don't anticipate upgrading any of my production kernels for
6 months to a year, or even longer. From a security perspective, the
2.4 kernels will continue to be actively maintained, so the only reason
to switch is if you need something in the 2.6 kernel that the 2.4 kernel
doesn't provide.

What software are you talking about here? Belkin UPS monitoring
software? From Debian or from elsewhere?

I usually use 'ssh -l root -X localhost' to log into the machine as
root and tunnel the display back. But other suggest other options.

It reminds me of the MS Exchange server at work. My lab is all unix
mail. It is always very humorous to get the exchange message "user X
would like to recall message Y" from a user who thinks that will work.
I and others usually go, "okay, here is your message Y back" and send
it back to them. :-) Recall messages don't work either.

It is in some way not in agreement with debian distributions idea, but you could, in
the source,
change dependencies (in the control file) and rebuild, then install the deb w dpkg,
and have both versions.

Please word wrap your lines at something like 72 columns. Your
message is all on one line and goes out to 252 columns! That makes it
very hard to read.

Please say *exactly* what kernel you have installed. There are
several possibilities and the differences are important.

> They are:
> One Intel® PRO/100+ Server Network Connection (Intel 82562ET Controller) and one
> Intel PRO/1000 XT Server Network Connection (Intel 82547EI Controller)

The 'woody' release includes the eepro100 driver which should work for
the first interface. But it does not include anything appropriate for
the second interface. You will need a newer kernel. At least 2.4.19
or later is required.

Add 'eepro100' to /etc/modules to instruct the kernel to load that
module at boot time.

  modprobe eepro100

If taht works then the following:

  echo eepro100 >> /etc/modules

Alternatively you can use the 'modconf' program to help you do this
for you.

It is usually about here where I suggest getting the kernel from the
woody-proposed-updates area. A not quite official update area and
very useful.

  deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ woody-proposed-updates main contrib

I would not upgrade from there. Just install the kernel that you
want, then comment that line out for the future. I always install the
kernel tuned for my architecture, k7 for an athlon, and so forth.

After you have installed the newer kernel then install the e1000
driver using the same proceedure as above. After that works then
switch out the eepro100 for the better e100 driver. The eepro100 is
the older driver and has some issues which are corrected by the e100
driver. Edit /etc/modules and replace eepro100 with e100. Either
unload the old driver and load the new one or simply reboot.

In that case does a newer version of dpkg corrected this oversight?
And if not shouldn't there be one? Then in a future version of the

How to recover files from corrupted file system?

2004-05-24 Thread tiresias
Hi!

Some weeks ago, being very tired, I ran mkfs.reiserfs on the wrong
partition. This had an ext3 filesystem before I ruined the filesystem
with my mkfs-command. The result was loss of many, many files. The
partition is now unmounted and not touched since my blow up. I have
tried to find tools that may help me recover my files.

How can I retrieve files from a disk whose inode-table is overwritten?
Are there any tools available for this?

Thanks a bunch for any help on this!

Best regards,

Display Catch-22

2004-05-24 Thread Thomas H. George
If this is a re-posting, my apologies. The original was reported "Mail
Delivery Failed" and did not appear in the list I downloaded. In
another case I re-posted a message after receiving the "Mail Delivery
Failed" notice, the re-posting did appear when I downloaded the list and
there was a response to the re-posting telling me that the original
was posted to the list. I have reconfigured exim and hope this solves
the problem.

My Belkin UPS probably saved my computer from the power surge but its
internal programming is probably fried. I reinstalled the software from
the Linux tarball changing all the ownerships to root:tom and all the
permissions to 770. This allows me to display the monitor but I cannot
change the setup. When I originally installed the UPS I did all this as
root and was able to change the setup. This is no longer possible as
security changes do not allow me to open a display as root.

The only thing to change is the com port which I was certain I had right
in the first place. To be sure I uninstalled the programs and
reinstalled them changing from /dev/ttyS0 to /dev/ttyS1. Neither works
though /dev/ttyS0 retrieved some information but in either case the
installed software generates periodic messages that the UPS device is
unreachable. This is what makes me believe the UPS internal software is
fried.

Before replacing it I would like to be sure that the display problem is
resolved. I have searched the X11, xdm and icewm setup files trying to
remove the restriction preventing opening a display as root. My plan
would be to take the computer offline (The connection is wireless so
ifdown wlan0 does this) during the time the root prohibition is overwridden.

Any suggestions?

Not exactly what you asked for, but I suggest you antiword.

# apt-get install antiword

The package installs a mailcap entry for application/msword so you don't
have to do anything to view word docs. You can even autoview word docs
if you put this line on your ~/.muttrc:

auto_view application/msword

How long can we avoid using kernel 2.6.x ?

I've tried kernel 2.6.6 and encounter various problems: one is that
magicfilter no longer works properly and another is that I don't find a
config entry for my usb Epson scanner. Others will probably emerge later.

No doubt I can find solutions to all such problems with a lot of work
but why should I bother, considering that 2.4.26 is working perfectly

desirable to shift to the new kernels in the near future?
