Help!!!! If I'm to get debian up, I need help solving this...

2004-09-02 Thread Chris Stockwell
dear debian users,
OK, here's the problem: I for the life of me can't connect to the online
apt sources. dhcp IS finding the cards...and I CAN ping the net. I really
WANT to use debianbut things are beginning to look doubtful. I've
configured apt sources in all the ways I can think, ftp, http,
manually. Are the servers not responding to apt requests? I can point my
browser (in windows or knoppix ) there. I'm just frustrated as heck

This is what is returned after all the timeouts:
"Apt Configuration
Cannot access security updates.
I cannot access the security updates on security.debian.org, so those
updates will not be made available to you at this time. You may want to
investigate this later.. Commented out entries for security.debian.org have
been added to the bottom of /etc/apt/sources.list . The error message I
received from apt was:

Failed to fetch
http://security.debian.org/dists/stable/updates/main/binary-i386/packages
Could not connect to security.debian.org:80 (1.0.0.0), connection timed out
Failed to fetch

http://security.debian.org/dists/stable/updates/main/binary-i386/Release
Could not connect to security.debian.org:80 (1.0.0.0), connection

timed out : Couldn't stat source package list"
My hardware is: pentium 200, AND P3 800 (neither have worked). I've tried
both stable and un-stable. Network cards are tulip based: linksys
LNE100tx, and also tried the belkin desktop pci card. I use dsl, a
router. Can't think of what else I can tell you.

If you can help me I'd really appreciate it.
Thank you.
Chris

Tasksel not supporting Desktop selection

2004-09-02 Thread Pradeeper
Hi All

I install a Sarge box using 1st CD. After that I edit my
/etc/apt/source.list to reflect my closest Debian mirror and did apt-get
update and upgrade without any problem.

I wanted a Debian desktop and I ran tasksel and found out there's no
selection for "Debian Desktop" which was there last time.

I did,
apt-get install desktop-base

But it only install Xfree86 and some other packages and not KDE or GNOME
which I want.
What is the minimal package list for have a GNOME and KDE?

Thanks!

work well. Any suggestions about that?

But the lock on device will still persist. It might be better to check
which processes are responsible for the lock via "fuser -amv" and then
kill all the locking processes, if appropriate, with "fuser -km".

If you have a look, (maybe ps aux|grep slave) you'll probably find some kind
of ioslave process still running, keeping it busy. Killing it might free it
up.

Just a guess, really. I've noticed KDE has problems with ioslaves of various
flavors getting stuck like this. Usually no real harm comes of it, but it
can be annoying.

I have tried burning a dvd+rw on my dvd+/- unit. But I've used
"dvd+rw-format -blank" on a dvd-rw. This "minimally" blanks the
dvd (there's also an option for -blank=full). I don't know if
such a procedure shortens the life of the dvd or if it's even
necessary. Maybe you can also force DAO using -dvd-compat
-dvd-compat (the 2x is not a typo).

I have an NTFS drive that I mount as ReadOnly. I have found that when I use
Konqueor to browse the drive and then exit Konqueor, I am not allowed to

I close all apps, but I can't find a way to be allowed to unmount the drive.

Does Konqueor keep a lock on the drives it browses? Is there anyway to free
this up?

I never tried the whole Courier solution, I just use Courier-imap. My
problems with it were mainly that the bits I needed to read were dispersed
throughout the massive, scary-looking documentation provided. But it's all
there. I went through this nearly two years ago, the documentation could

If you have some sort of printing script, you might do:

rtf-to-postscript-program < file.rtf | ps2pdf13 /dev/fd/0 /dev/fd/1 | pdftotext >
file.txt

As for correctly-displaying rtf processors, you'll probably need an
Xserver. (How much RAM do the XFree 3 packages (e.g. xserver-vga16)
use? Xfree 3 is very obsolete, but you can still get it in woody.)

Dired mode? C-x C-f .

The Linux console can only display one font and a maximum of 16 colors
at one time. (Even with fbcon.) And it has to be a monospaced font.

It might be able to load rtf, but that doesn't make the rtf file Human

{\s5\cf0{\*\hyphen2\hyphlead2\hyphtrail2\hyphmax0}

Also, not being able to browse to the files I want to open is going to
disqualify emacs for me.

Any other console-based editors that can read rtf and either display
them properly or hide the markup code?

I have a strong reason - I only want one application to read all these
discussion on. I run kde, and kmail is ergonomically far far easier to read
mailing lists fast (and all the messages are properly threaded) than any of
the news reading programs I've tried (knode and pan to name but two).

In fact, I prefer that so much so, that I run my own mailman mailing list
gated to a newsgroup that I wish to read with just me subscribed so that I
can read it in the same application.

It looks like it has potential. However, the only menu items that work
are Change Play Mode and Quit. How do I get it to actually recognize
either of my cd-rom drives?

I've got the CD-RW drive as /dev/sr0 and the DVD drive as /dev/sr1, and

Then someone has to clear unwanted messages from the IMAP server. And once
cleared, they're gone for good. Whereas with NNTP, no explicit deletion
needed: You just don't download the message and that's all. Also,
non-downloaded messages are still waiting there on the server, ready to be
read anytime until they're expired from the NNTP server.

Oh, BTW I completely forgot another important issue with mail lists: All
those wasted internet bandwith, list-server cycles, and overloaded
mailboxes (at ISP and local PC). Which translate into additional costs, to
be paid by someone(s).

Agreed. I was referring to "threaded discussions" for the sake of
completeness of the definition, not to particularly emphasize on threading

My system was complaining that one of the README files was provided by

A dpkg -i --force-all on the gcc packages worked to get them all
installed after I carefully checked that this was the only thing apt

Is there a problem with gcc and friends?

The package alsa-base comes with the file
/etc/hotplug/blacklist.d/alsa-base I guess that if that file doesn't
take care of your problems with getting hotplug to leave out OSS modules
then you should bug report.

>The second is /etc/discover.conf add a skip line for your OSS module

Ah, cool. I removed the discover package to get my ALSA working. This
would have been a cleaner solution.

>This should prevent the system from discovering it as well as prevent

These two packages seem to overlap, don't they? Hotplug is pulled in due
to udev and seems to do a bit of discovery, what is left for discover to
do? (My system seems to work just fine with only hotplug + udev.) Will
there be more magic is both are installed?

One other note. I recently had a problem with hotplug and ALSA, this was
due to hotplug thinking that I needed the snd_usb_audio module inserted.
I haven't got a clue why it all of a sudden started thinking that!
Adding it to the blacklist took care of the problem.

Console-Based Appd Recommendations

2004-09-02 Thread Scarletdown
I'm in the process of tinkering around with my old TI Extensa 450 Laptop
and getting Damn Dmall Linux installed on her, since she only has 12MB
RAM and a 540MB hard drive.

Due to memory limitations (until I can get a pair of 72 pin 16MB laptop
DIMMs), I am running without X. Therefore, I am looking for a few
tools and apps that work in console mode.

First, there is the CD player. I tried out cdcd, and it seems like it
will be suitable for my needs. However, I need some sort of front end
for it, sorta like a XMMS, but in console mode, and works with gpm.

Second, since this laptop doesn't have a sound card, I am looking for a
speaker driver. I have one over on the Windows 3.x side, which works
quite well and lets me play wav files through the PC speaker. Is there
a similar driver (preferably one that can be loaded via insmod)
available in the Debian archives? And even better, perhaps something
that can handle mp3 and ogg files.

Another thing I am hoping is out there is a word processor that can
handle rtf files. At the very least, it needs to at least be able to
load an rtf file and hide the markups, and then save back to rtf.

Email: What text based client do you folk recommend? I'm leaning
towards PINE, but I can't remember if PINE supports POP3 or not.

News Reader

IRC Client

That's all I can think of at the moment. Any suggestions for any of the
above?

gui sftp client (using rssh on server)

2004-09-02 Thread Carl Devos
Hello,

I've installed rssh on my server so users can only use scp and sftp.

Works fine with sftp in CLI, but I can't find a Linux graphical client
which works in sarge (I found FileZilla for Windows).

I've tried gFTP, but when I tick "Use SSH2 SFTP subsys" in
FTP/Options/SSH, I get the following error:

Opening SSH connection to www.genappe.be
Running program ssh -e none -l genappe -p 22 -s sftp
3: Protocol Initialization
There was an error initializing a SSH connection with the remote server.
The error message from the remote server follows: ssh_askpass:
exec(/usr/bin/ssh-askpass): No such file or directory Disconnecting from
site

SSH2 sftp-server path is set to /usr/lib and I didn't tick "Use
ssh-askpass utility".

So, I installed kbear (sarge again), but there I get only the following
protocols: ftp or fonts.
Is there any other kde package I should install to get sftp?

Lastly, I tried konqueror with fish:// but it didn't work.
I guess it's because it's not using true sftp (probably ssh).

Anybody got another gui client working with rssh on the server?

Thanks for your time,

Carl

If it's the same book I looked at not long back, it comes with Debian Potato
on the back cover. That's about 17.6 million years old in Linux terms. So
no, that's probably not a good way to go.

Sure you can. I don't actually know how to do it, come to think of it, but
it's certainly possible. That's how KNOPPIX does it after all. One thing
about Debian (and Linux more generally) is that we have tools out the wazoo
to do things that Windows users have to pay a lot of money for. They're not
always the most intuitive or easy to use tools, but they're bristling with
useful gadgets.

Maybe. Debian rotates logs by default, and klogd can't do much during
the rotation. But logging should only stop for less than a second - how
long does it stop?

Pure nonsense. Vim is the best. It is unquestionably a matter of taste. Vim

Interesting :) I see so much from people on mailing lists and see
other Debian folk in Real Life so rarely that I'd kind of forgotten
that any of us could still speak - even though I read hundreds of emails

Should we produce audio guides to Debian as a matter of course ?

Your PC would carry the whole NG instead of the messages you're interested
in. In the long run you would have two choices: Either set up a rather
short expiry period (which would clear away the messages you might like to
keep longer), or have a rather bloated inbox (or appropriate folders)
which would stretch access time to disk, perhaps to the point it would
take downloading it from the net. A third option could be setting up
separate expirations and filters for each folder (list), separately
marking each message you like to keep longer, and generally putting up
with a galore of unnecessary toil.

OTOH, with an offline news reader you can download all the headers, mark
the ones you would like to read offline, get online and download the
marked messages, then read and reply to them offline. Quite efficient.
Additionally you would have cached only the messages you have deliberately
downloaded. So you could set a really long expiration period, and still
you would have quite a light and fast message cache.

Right. Also I would prefer to use the right method in the first place,
rather than try to circumvent shortcoming of a wrong method.

This is so with online news readers (like KNode). But with an offline
reader (like Mozilla or Pan) you don't have to prefetch all the bodies.

Is it possible to work offline with IMAP? I.e. download headers, mark
some, than get the ones marked for download.

This may be a clever solution. But it is awkward to employ a server just
to be able to circumvent limitations imposed by using wrong tools for the
task at hand. NNTP is specifically designed for threaded discussions, and
it has all the bells and whistles inherently needed for the task. Whereas
with mail one has to twist and bend to get somewhere near.

In a nutshell I see this whole "mail lists for public discussions" thing
like this: A teaspoon can be used as a screw-driver, and a screw-driver
can be used to mix a cup of tea. But what is the point?

ALSA

2004-09-02 Thread Rod MacPherson
I've seen a number of people complaining about also not loading properly
recently.

I too had that problem. OSS worked, but ALSA didn't.

After much searching and experimentation here is the solution:

ALSA will not load if OSS is alrady loaded.

If you are using a stock 2.6 kernel OSS and ALSA are both enabled, and OSS
will try to load first.

There are two places to try to prevent this behavior without having to
recompile your kernel with OSS disabled.

The first is /etc/hotplug/blacklist
add a line with just the name of the OSS version of the sound driver
module for your soundcard/chipset. (in my case, since mine is an AC97
compatible chipset it was "i810_audio")

The second is /etc/discover.conf
add a skip line for your OSS module
(in my case it was "skip i810_audio")

This should prevent the system from discovering it as well as prevent
hotplug from loading it later in the bootup process.

Best of luck to all those who were having ALSA troubles.

2004-09-02 Thread Richard Weil
Can e2fsck repair/cope with physical problems with a disk?

smartmontools found a number of bad blocks on my hard drive. I don't
remember the exact wording. Other disk parameters seemed fine, i.e.,
the disk as a whole was not in imminent danger of failure.

Can e2fsck, or some other program, permanently cordon-off these bad
blocks so that I can continue to use (the rest) of the drive? I would
rather lose parts of the current drive than have to get a new one.

Jigdo Sarge templates outdated?

2004-09-02 Thread hugo vanwoerkom
Hi!
Trying to generate the Sarge CD#1 with jigdo-lite I get 91 files that
are missing. I use
http://cdimage.debian.org/pub/cdimage-testing/cd/jigdo-area/i386[...]
for the jigdo files and templates.
When I take a random check on what is missing, I get. e.g. that he
cannot find ntp-server_4.2.0a-10. When you look on
ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/n/ntp/ you find that that has
version -11.
Now the templates et al. are dated almost a month back. Does that mean
that Sarge cdimage work has been suspended?
Did I miss an announcement?

Anybody else have this problem?

I'm still freezing too. Latest pre-compiled 2.6.8 kernel on Sid, ThinkPad T22.

It's not just the usb mouse-- it also freezes with a PS2 mouse and even with no
external mouse (just the trackpointer). Usually the machine seems to be warm or
under a heavy load.

I had a theory it was ACPI, but Hasan was probably using APM on his 2.4 kernel,
so it must be something else.

A remount is what you get when you change things like that while the
system is running. Add data=journal to /etc/fstab, and run:

   sudo shutdown -r now

   OR,

   sudo init 6

Yes there are still a few settings that only take effect when you

Moving_Installed_Files

2004-09-02 Thread Cousin Stanley
Greetings

If I move installed files from their original
apt-get install target locations, is there a
a simple way to redirect the package managers
to cope with these path changes for future
  updates/upgrades of a particular package ?

For example, I've installed the python2.3-qt3 package
under Debian/Sarge and moved all of the associated files
into a NEW dir within the /usr/lib/python2.3/site-packages dir
and added a necessary .pth file to compliment the python
  search rules

So far, this seems to function as expected in the python/qt zone,
e.g., all of the python/qt demos still work, but I'm wondering
how to deal with future updates/upgrades

I think that you'd have to use the FORWARD chain instead of INPUT
/sbin/iptables -A FORWARD -p tcp -I eth0 -s 0/0 -d ! 10.0.0.0/8 --dport 25  -j REJECT

EXT3 and data=journal

2004-09-02 Thread Mason Loring Bliss
How can I use data=journal mode in Sarge, stock kernel 2.4.26-1-i386? If
I include data=journal in /etc/fstab, I'm told that I can't change the
journal mode during a remount. Using tune2fs to set journal=data doesn't
seem to help.

Thanks in advance for assistance!

Debian install program unable to mount CD-ROM

2004-09-02 Thread ERIC MICHAEL HIELSCHER
Hi,

My name is Eric Hielscher, and I am having trouble installing Debian on my brand new
computer (which I really want to use). First things first, here is a hardware list:

MSI 865PE Neo2 Motherboard
Intel P4 3.2GHz w/ HT
512MB DDR
Sony 16x DVD-ROM
LITEON CDRW
2 80GB Seagate SATA HDDs
NVidia GeForce FX 5900

Notably absent is a floppy drive. :)

First when I was trying to install Debian, it was unable to find my HDDs. I poked
around the net and found that SATA support is, well, interesting, so I set my BIOS to
Legacy ATA mode. This allowed me to have the Debian install program find my HDDs, and
I was able to partition them and initialize the file systems. Now when I try to move
to the next step in the install process, Install kernel and modules, Debian is unable
to mount either of my CD drives. My BIOS was able to find them, as I booted off the
CD. I have been told to check the fstab file, but I don’t think that is available to
me at this stage (I am kind of a newb). I also tried to boot the install program with
the flag ide=nodma as someone told me that might help but no luck.

Any ideas at all as to what I should try?

Thanks,

Eric

Xwrapper.config is missing?

Mine is:
### BEGIN DEBCONF SECTION
# Do not edit within this region if you want your changes to be preserved by
# debconf. Instead, make changes after the "### END DEBCONF SECTION" line.
allowed_users=console
nice_value=-10
### END DEBCONF SECTION

Maybe if you create Xwrapper.config with that content it will work. It
should have been created by the X install (is X configured?).

In your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file, you will find something like this:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Generic Video Card"
Driver "vesa"
# BusID "PCI:1:0:0"

EndSection

Try changing the word after Driver to "vesa".

I think there was a problem with kdelibs4: lots of kde pakages were affected
because they were kept back when you tried to do an upgrade. Now the problem
is fixed in sid so if you do an upgrade (after an update, of course) all the
kde programs should work.

The magic line for saving your raid config was so

If you have a cheap connection to the internet, there's really no
reason to even go as far as downloading more than the 110MB
net-install image...

But SPAM (the Hormel product is always capitalized) is good. Instead,
get that Flavorite Potted Beef Byproduct they sell for 30 cents for

You can't. PS/2 devices are detected at boot by the system and no
other time. If you want a PS/2 keyboard or mouse, you need to have it
attached at power-on.

USB problems

2004-09-02 Thread Freddy Freeloader
Hi All,
I've been running into problems trying to set up my HP 895 printer via a
usb cable. I'm running sarge with a 2.6.8 kernel, and have installed
hpij and hpoj. When I ran hpoj setup it told me I needed to place the
line " none /proc/bus/usb usbfs defaults 0 0" in my /etc/fstab file. I
did that and then ran the hpoj setup again. It probed all usb ports and
found nothing.

I also found no /usb in /proc/bus either. However, when the usb cable
from the printer is plugged in at boot I find khubd is running. (If the
usb cable is not plugged in boot time khubd does not start.) And when I
attempt to expand /proc with the gnome file browser it says loading and
the file browser hangs at that point. I have to close the file browser
and reboot it to be able to use it after that. Also, if I kill khubd at
that point my file browser or bash terminal will no longer open.

Anyone have any idea as to what is going on here? I'm pretty new to
Debian and Linux so I'm kind of at a loss. I've done some Googling and
from what I've been able to glean khubd is not a driver I want to be
using. How do I get rid of it, and what do I replace it with? I've
gone through modconf and find nothing obvious in there.

gnucash compatibility

2004-09-02 Thread Hendrik Boom
I have machines running different versions of debian -- woody and sarge,
to be specific. Can I use thg gnucashes in woody and sarge interchangably
on the same data files (which are on an NFS-mounted volume).

The question is really about file-format compatibility. Will gnucash 1.8.9-2
read and write its database in a way that 1.6.6-1 can understand?

Perhaps it will work if I avoid features unique to 1.8.9-1. But If I
inadvertently use one of the new features in 1.8.9-2, will 1.6.6-1
crash, barf, or ignore?

Does anyone have any experience with this? It would be convenient to be
able to use any system that happens to be available, but not if it renders
my entire personal financial database unreadable.

That's because you removed the file, but package management knows that it's
supposed to be there, so it won't overwrite it. If you really want to
overwrite it, look into the force options.

You need to track dependencies back and figure out what to do. If you force
kontact-plugins to be installed, you should be fine. If you decide you
don't want kontact-plugins, then remove it from the list of packages to be
installed. Oh, but kdeaddons depends on kontact-plugins. Well, don't
install kdeaddons, but rather the individual packages that it depends on,
minus kontact-plugins, of course. Oh, but kde depends on kdeaddons. Same
solution. With aptitude, this is pretty simple. Open up the kde package,
and instead of selecting it to install, select the individual depends lines
to be installed. Open up kdeaddons, and do the same.

If that's too hard, just wait until kontact-plugins is fixed.

Hope that helps.

Using mozilla-firefox Ver 0.8
I _can_ execute a php program with
http://my.domain/pipinfo.php
or from a console
php ./phpinfo.php

I _can_not_ load that phpinfo.php file, and get it to run with
File -> Load File. Should the Load File, in firefox, or any browser,
be able to run the php file? Others were trying that and firefox was
offering to 'save' the file. Mine does not do that. Mine brings up a
blank window and hangs the browser.

I seem to recall being able to load/run php files from the File->Load
File when I was using php3.

Thanks

Wayne

You are not alone. Check out the bug tracking system at bugs.debian.org.
Specifically, check out

apt-get - unmet dependencies

2004-09-02 Thread Anders Breindahl
Hello list.

I was wondering if there is any way to correct this fault in apt-get:
# apt-get upgrade
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
kdeaddons: Depends: kontact-plugins (>= 4:3.2.3-2) but it is not installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try using -f.

The problem is, that I cannot use apt at anything as this fault stops it
from going anywhere. I have tried the -f switch:

# apt-get -f install
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Correcting dependencies... Done
The following extra packages will be installed:
  kontact-plugins
Suggested packages:
  kdeaddons-doc-html
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  kontact-plugins
0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 3 not upgraded.
307 not fully installed or removed.
Need to get 0B/52,4kB of archives.
After unpacking 188kB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]
(Reading database ... 81569 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking kontact-plugins
(from .../kontact-plugins_4%3a3.2.3-2_i386.deb) ...
dpkg: error
processing /var/cache/apt/archives/kontact-plugins_4%3a3.2.3-2_i386.deb
(--unpack):
trying to overwrite `/usr/lib/kde3/kcm_kontactknt.so', which is also in
package kontact
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)
Errors were encountered while processing:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/kontact-plugins_4%3a3.2.3-2_i386.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I've also tried `apt-get autoclean'. I've even tried
removing /usr/lib/kde3/kcm_kontactknt.so, with no result.

So I'm asking the list. Any help is appreciated.
