I don't recall if Debian defaults to use PAM with sasl, anyway, seems
you're missing the authentication backend, i mean, if sasl needs to
use the sasldb or PAM or other to store/check username and password. I
think you need to add a "auxprop_plugin:
the_plugin_name_you_intend_to_use" line in your
/etc/postfix/sasl/smtpd.conf.

It can break some programs, in the package description is mentioned
the IBM JDK and probably others. IMHO you'll see a benefit using the
new NPTL only if you have a very loaded big server. You can try it and
if something broke you can purge it. =)

This is a reply to a similar post I made on the KDE list. I assume there may
be something quite similar around gnome:

> How does one execute some scripts on logging out of a kde session?

If you want them run as root, have:

$KDEDIR/share/config/kdm/Xreset

script source them.

If you want them run as USER, have them sourced at the end of the:

$KDEDIR/bin/startkde

script.

initrd.img and booting

2004-10-21 Thread john gennard
I have a Sid installation with the 2.6.7-1 kernel, and have
just compiled 2.6.8 (after weeks of trying, I cannot
configure my USB network adaptor and hoped this might give
me some clue to the problem).

After creating the kernel-image.deb, I got the following
message and selected b. (not wishing to find I couldn't
boot at all):-
--
Unpacking kernel-image-2.6.8.1910 (from
kernel-image-2.6.8.1910_10.00.Custom_i386.deb) ...
Setting up kernel-image-2.6.8.1910 (10.00.Custom) ...
/initrd.img does not exist. Installing from scratch, eh?
Or maybe you don't want a symbolic link here. Hmm? Lets See.

I note that you have an old initrd symbolic link in place. The name of
the symbolic link is being changed to initrd.img I have two options
here. I can: (A) delete the old symbolic link (default). You shall
need to update the boot loader (b) Igore it and do nothing

Please select one of a, or b:

Please note that initrd points to the wrong image now
Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub .
Testing for an existing GRUB menu.list file... found: /boot/grub/menu.lst .
Searching for splash image... none found, skipping...
Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.8.1910
Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.7-1-386
Updating /boot/grub/menu.lst ... done

/boot/grub/menu.lst includes the following (ignoring the recovery
mode entries):-
-
title Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.8.1910
root(hd0,8)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.8.1910 root=/dev/hda9 ro
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.8.1910
savedefault
boot

title Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.7-1-386
root(hd0,8)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.7-1-386 root=/dev/hda9 ro
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.7-1-386
savedefault
boot

2.6.7 still boots, but 2.6.8 does not - I expected this,
but I'm confused. For example, why are the entries for vmlinuz
required? If they were used wouldn't the booting of 2.6.7 fail?

/initrd is a link to boot/intrd.img-2.6.7-1
/initrd.img is a link to boot/initrd.img-2.6.8
/vmlinuzis a link to boot/vmlinuz-2.6.8
/vmlinuz.oldis a link to boot/vmlinuz-2.6.7-1

What I would like to know (I don't want to experiment myself),
is how do I arrange things so that grub will boot whichever
kernel I select? Also, is there a URL or reference listing
what should be compiled directly into a kernel to avoid the
need to create an intrd.img?

Can anyone give me an explanation please?

John

AFAIK it's not. But you can just grab a copy from an eclipse.org mirror
and unzip it anywhere you like (preserved, your $JAVA_HOME is set). As
it contains an Update Manager itself, it's not difficult to stay

This has been posted many, many times. You couldn't do a five-minute web
search?

You can't count on it going perfectly, although it probably will, and Sarge
isn't (quite) Stable yet, so this might not be the best possible time. In
fact, Sarge is still mutating at a rate of over five packages per day.

Method:  change sources.list.  Run "apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade".
Run "apt-get dist-upgrade" again. Repeat that last step until it doesn't
upgrade anything. (In the Potato-->Woody upgrade, you had to dist-upgrade
many times. I'm told that the algorithm has been improved, so once might be
enough.)

You're vanishingly unlikely to get lost data per se, but a broken system is
not impossible. Of course, you do regular backups, right?

New install with HDD from MAXTOR SATA/150 controller

2004-10-21 Thread Philippe Dhont (Sea-ro)

Hello,

I have an older computer (PII) but with enough RAM and a HDD from 120 GB
connected via an addon MAXTOR SATA/150 card.
When i boot, the computer sees the sata pci card AND the hdd.
Then i install debian and he also sees the promise chipset from the card
but the modules or whatever or not available at that time of the
installation.
When i have to partition my hdd, i get the error that no partition media
can be found so debian is not seeing the HDD via the controller.

How can i change this ? Or is it not possible ?

Cheers,

I guess not, because it is specific to your system. In general, all
drivers needed to mount your root filesystem.

For a standard PC, that would be the drivers for the ide controller, for
the ide disk, and for the / filesystem (probably ext3, but it might be a
different one).

For other systems, it might be scsi, network and nfs (nfs-root systems),
usb (your system on a usb drive, why not ?),...

Michael,

I might be reading your email wrong. The /var/chroot/apache/etc/passwd is
not what matters. What does matter is the standard /etc/passwd.

So, try adding something like this:

If you want to get the output from a compile or any other command that

The problem turned out to be the lack of module-init-tools on my
system. An additional problem was that module-init-tools conflicted
with modutils already installed. I had to upgrade modutils to most
current version first, then install module-init-tools. All is fine now,
except that during the process of upgrading all my packages (which
probably wasn't necessary) I have lost my /boot/boot.b ->
/boot/boot-menu.b . The system boots into vmlinuz-2.6.8 just fine, and
my modules load, but I don't have a menu option for booting into the
previous kernel. I need to obtain another boot-menu.b somehow.

Anyway, thanks to all who provided suggestions to my compile problem.

   Russ

If you create an executable file in your home directory called .xsession

#!/bin/bash

gnome-session
some-other-commands

(remember to do chmod +x .xsession) then chose "default" session from
the session menu in gdm[1] this will run the commands _after_
gnome-session ends.

I'm not sure what would happen if you chose "shut-down" or "restart"
from the logout menu instead of "logout", I'll check it later and get
back to you, unless someone else would like to tell ;)

[1] If your not using gdm I'm not sure how to choose to run the
.xsession but there should be an option to do so.

I don't recall if Debian defaults to use PAM with sasl, anyway, seems
you're missing the authentication backend, i mean, if sasl needs to

think you need to add a "auxprop_plugin:

Ok. I had the following line in in /etc/postfix/sasl/smtpd.conf :

I also modified the /etc/init.d/postfix script. I had /etc/sasldb2 in

It seems unlikely. USE flags specify (mostly) what optional packages
to compile against. For Debian to do this, all packages would have to
be compiled against all combinations of all optional dependancies. As
it is, without that level of choice, Debian is already too big to fit
on a DVD! (And that doens't begin to cover the additional level of
testing that would be required).

'--' instructs most utilities to stop parsing command options and treat

that anything after that will be treated as a file to be removed.

you may need to set a boot delay in /etc/lilo.conf. If you do that, you
will be able to select a kernel to boot.

Take a look at
http://www.linuxheadquarters.com/howto/basic/lilo.shtml

or man lilo.conf for more details.

A Very Strange Error Message When Installing Debian 3.0

2004-10-21 Thread heyboy
Hi,

I am a new user of debian. Recently, I installed
debian 3.0 in my computer. However, I encounter a very
strange error.
I boot the computer with the installation CD and
follow the instruction.
When installing base component, error occurs.
The error message is like "fail to chroot /target dpkg
--force-depends --install
/var/cache/apt/archives/debconf_1.0.32_all.deb".
And then I press alt+ctrl+F4 to view the details. I
found that error occurs when configuring debconf.
Actually, perl fail to compile the file Errno.pm.
And the error message from the perl compiler is "Perl
v0.0.0 require--this is only v5.6.1".
And then I view the file Errno.pm.
The line that error occurs is "use 5.006;"
Although I am not familiar with perl, I am sure that
this is not a problem of Errno.pm.
This error make me frustrated but I don't give up and
install in my friend's computer. I can install
successfully this time! Then I move the harddisk from
my friend's computer to my computer. The system starts
properly. Unfortunately, when I install ssh by
apt-get, the error comes again when configuring ssh
with debconf.
"Perl v0.0.0 require--this is only v5.6.1".
I try to enter "perl" in bash shell
#perl
use 5.006;

No error occurs?
But I try serveral times, the same error occurs!
I doubt that this error causes by interupt or timer.
But I am not sure why this occurs.
This error seems to occur randomly in command mode.
I had tried to read the perl source code to find the
reasons. Although I can located the error message
printed in Universal.c, I don't know why it appears.

I love debian very much because it is elegant,
efficent and suit me best. I really want to enjoy it.
Can you give me suggestion and tell me why the error
occurs?
My CPU is : Althon 1000MHz
Ram : 256 + 32 MB

If you need more information, please let me know.

I am very grateful if you can reply me.
A million thanks.

Regards,
Vincent

Turn antialiasing off in Mozilla 1.7

2004-10-21 Thread Stephen Turner
Can anyone help me turn antialiasing off in Mozilla 1.7? Some people
apparently like blurry writing, but I don't. :-)

I was using version 1.6-5 until today, and I had the following lines in
/etc/mozilla/prefs.js which turned antialiasing off:

pref("font.scale.aa_bitmap.enable", false);
pref("font.scale.aa_bitmap.min", 100);
pref("font.antialias.min", 100);

But today I upgraded to 1.7.3-5, and antialiasing has turned itself on
again, and I can't work out how to turn it off again.

Thanks in advance for any help.

You shouldn't need to do anything thing except "make install" as root.

Neither. You just don't have certain build dependancies installed (to
take a simple example, without a C compiler you could run "HelloWorld"
but not compile "HelloWorld.c" into "HelloWorld"). Find the debian
packages containing the moc binary ( has
a nice search engine) and install them first.

courier-imap extremely slow after update

Hi,

after updating courier-imap, access to the mailbox has become extremely slow.
Opening a mail folder in any client (tried sylpheed-claws, Thunderbird and

normal (almost instantaneous).

It is an issue with SSL, TLS and unencrypted connections.

Any ideas what could cause this?

Magicfilter 2.3

2004-10-21 Thread Anthony Campbell
The Debian magicfilter package gives version 1.2.
There is a version 2.3 available from
http://www.pell.portland.or.us/~orc/Code/magicfilter/

It now has a BSD-style copyright, so perhaps that is why it isn't
available for Debian. I emailed the maintainer but didn't get a reply.
Could it not be placed in non-free?

I compiled it myself and placed it in /usr/local. It seems to work well
though I had no problems with 1.2 either. Anybody else using it?

Debian package downloader for win32

2004-10-21 Thread Chad Kiser
Here is my problem. I'm running debian at home where I have dial-up
with no other options. At work we have satellite which is just a
little better. To update my system now I have a second drive which I
boot into which has a exact copy of my home debian install on it.
Then I run an update, copy the files to cd take them home and install
them there again. Here is what I'm requesting, an app on debian which
will output my installed package database and possible sources.list
into a file. Then a win32 program that will read that file, look at my
sources.list and present me with a list of upgradeable packages, then
allow me to select packages to upgrade and download those for me. I
don't know anything about coding so I can't do something like this for
myself, and I'm sure there are other people out there in a similar
situation that something like this would benefit. Would someone be
willing to tackle such a project?

I don't use Woody anymore. If possible you might try the new Sarge
Installer. Sarge will be the new Debian stable soon. That will not have
the error you describe.

Debian attack on Mac OS X?

2004-10-21 Thread Peter Callas
I was suggested to contact this address by someone at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Can any one please help with this problem:

Recently when I try to use 1.2.3 (v125.9) or Internet Explorer 5.2 on
Mac OS X 10.3.5 I cannot access *any* web sites correctly. I either get
"Not Found. The requested URL /search was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use
an ErrorDocument to handle the request. Apache/1.3.29 Server at
www.cerne.no-ip.org Port 80"

or else I get the following page appearing even though the address is,
for example, http://www.google.com (ie. the address bar shows as I typed it)

XXX
XXX

"Welcome to Your New Home in Cyberspace!

This is a placeholder page installed by the Debian release of the Apache
Web server package, because no home page was installed on this host. You
may want to replace this as soon as possible with your own web pages, of
course
This computer has installed the Debian GNU/Linux operating system but
has nothing to do with the Debian GNU/Linux project. If you want to
report something about this host's behavior or domain, please contact
the ISPs involved directly, not the Debian Project.

See the Network Abuse Clearinghouse for how to do this.

Unless you changed its configuration, your new server is configured as
follows:
•Configuration files can be found in /etc/apache.
• The DocumentRoot, which is the directory under which all your HTML
files should exist, is set to /var/www.
• CGI scripts are looked for in /usr/lib/cgi-bin, which is where
Debian packages will place their scripts.
• Log files are placed in /var/log/apache, and will be rotated daily.
The frequency of rotation can be easily changed by editing
/etc/apache/cron.conf.
• The default directory index is index.html, meaning that requests for
a directory /foo/bar/ will give the contents of the file
/var/www/foo/bar/index.html if it exists (assuming that /var/www is your
DocumentRoot).
• User directories are enabled, and user documents will be looked for
in the public_html directory of the users' homes. These dirs should be
under /home, and users will not be able to symlink to files they don't own.
All standard Apache modules are available with this release and can be
chosen with the apacheconfig script. Installing a new module on your
system is just a matter of compiling it (with the apache-dev package)
and adding a line to your httpd.conf configuration file.

More documentation on Apache can be found on:
•The Apache documentation stored on your server.
• The Apache Project home site.
• The ApacheWeek newsletter.
• The Debian Project Documentation which contains HOWTOs, FAQs, and
software updates.

You can also consult the list of World Wide Web Frequently Asked
Questions for information.

If you find a bug in this Apache package, or in Apache itself, please
file a bug report on it. Instructions on doing this, and the list of
known bugs of this package, can be found in the Debian Bug Tracking System.

Thanks for using this package, and congratulations for your choice of a
Debian system!"

X
X

This happens for every site I try to enter, including Debian's.

I can still access the internet via Netscape 7.1 for some reason.
However my Software Update no longer works.

I read that there was an attack on Debian and Linux, but that was in
November last year. I don't understand what this has to do with Mac OS X
and why it is happening on two browsers and not on Netscape.

I have not installed any version of Linux on my 15" Powerbook. Can you
please shine any light on this attack? Is this redirection produced by
Debian? If so why? Apple cannot help me with this problem, I hope that
you can.

Thank you in advance for your prompt response.

I'm not sure (that is I don't know which part of the ssh connection is doing

ssh's either filtering out some/all environment variables, or because the

some contexts, that sort of thing would set $TERM to "network".

Not exactly what you are requesting, but it can be done with the tools
you have, you probably only need wget or similar application for
windos. It's explained in the APT offline howto (found this link on
google:
http://cip.physik.uni-freiburg.de/cgi-bin/dwww?type=html&location=/usr/share/doc/apt-doc/offline.html/index.html).

You only need to download the packages file with APT, it's bearable on
dial-up, but you can avoid this part too, only it became a little too
cumbersome...

P.S. look at the 3rd part, "Using APT and wget"

I guess it is the response from a machine that is incorrectly used as proxy.

If you do not need a proxy, then disable its use in IE (I have no idea how you
can do this)
If you need a proxy, copy the config you have in netscape as you said it is
working. Do not forget the port number.

If it is not a proxy config problem... I have no clue what it could be.

You haven't done a very good job of quoting me, and you seem to have
misinterpreted what I said. You do need to run configure and make, but
you can do that as a regular user. You only need to be root for the
last stage - make install.

Didn't you install 1.3.3 from a binary? As I said - you don't need to
compilation tools and the header files to build against if you are
using a prebuilt binary. As you are building from source you DO need
them.

> I don't understand why the redhat 1.3.3 rpm was installed and not lyx-1.3.5.rpm

Different packages with different dependencies - and being binaries,
they usually depend on specific versions of their dependencies.

Re: Really strange connection issue

2004-10-21 Thread Ali Alphan Bayazit
I am not sure I understand the problem,

evolution only connects for a single rdf file,

firefox on the other hand, downloads html+ images + javascripts, etc

for example, if you do,
wget -kq -O - www.salon.com | grep 'src=' | grep -v -e salon -e '="/'

you will see a javascript link:
http://services.springstreetnetworks.com/Services/Pod/PodJavaScript.aspx?pnid=2001

wget --spider
http://services.springstreetnetworks.com/Services/Pod/PodJavaScript.aspx?pnid=2001

this is redirected to 67.72.16.92
one of your unresolved adressed.

I hope that's ok now.

Netatalk2

2004-10-21 Thread Joachim Smit
I'm trying to install Netatalk 2. Because there isn't
a Debian-package yet I'm trying to compile it.

After:

"./configure --with-bdb=/usr/local/BerkeleyDB.4.2"

I get the following message:

"If you have installed BDB in a non standard location
use the --with-bdb=/path/to/bdb configure option and
make sure your linker is configured to check for
libraries there.
configure: error: Berkeley DB library required but not
found!"

What should I do ?

Thanks in advance.

I just did a dist-upgrade and got it, but it's giving me a amusing
error in which is says it needs 10MB to install, and I have about
negative 1TB.

df reports me as having 47 GB open.

I'm just going to remove the package and re-install it, and then if
that doesn't work, I'll play with it a bit, bu if anyone has any
ideas, I'd love the help :)

Go get a copy of Knoppix from http://www.knoppix.net/ and boot from
the Knoppix disk. Then use parted or qtparted from the Knoppix disk
to do your resizing and partitioning in one fell swoop.

That's not surprising, my store still sells floppy drives regularly,
though we have long since stopped carrying floppies altogether. It's
sort of a dead critter.

No problems. I suggest making a 10 or 15MB /boot partition at the
beginning of your drive to help avoid potential problems with older
BIOS and large disks, though.

Now, I have the following problem.

I can run './configure' with several options like:
--enable-redhat, --enable-suse etcetera to install the
start scripts. There isn't an option --enable-debian.

How should I solve that problem?

Thank you again.

OK I moved a couple of the configs over to '/etc/webmin/', but it's still
borked. Looks like I'm going back to the upstream package. :(

I'll take another look at the Debian package, when it's been adopted, to see if
it moves over the configuration files, when updating from the upstream version.

Thanks for your input.

Set up virtual tap0 device on boot

2004-10-21 Thread Damir Dezeljin
Hi.

I hope that I'm not reposting this e-mail (I never received my first
post).

Is it posible to set up 'tap0' device during Debian boot?

As I know it is needed to send a special IOCTL call to the /dev/net/tun
character device. This IOCTL is used to register the tap0 with the kernel.

I would like to set tap0 in promisc mode and add it to br0 bridge that is
set up on boot from /etc/network/interfaces. I would like to avoid adding
my own program for tap0 registration. Is there anything similar already
implemented in 'standard' Debian boot sequence - e.g. in interfaces file?

Any sugestion?

10x and regards,
Dezo

Sounds like it missed one of the needed dependencies. Not for Evolution,
but for the upgrade. I've seen the same error when I was in the middle
of an upgrade between Woody and Sarge. I think the package that fixed it
for me was something like e2fsprogs.

For this one i've no idea. You could try to look what the above
options try to do, i suspect how and where the init files are created.
You can look to the netatalk Debian package and see what the mantainer

Re: [OT] kudos to the debian-installer team!

2004-10-21 Thread Gilbert, Joseph
I concur. I used the Sarge Debian installer for the first time last night
on a machine at home. I was amazed at how easy it was to set up a mixed
system. In the past, rather than fool around with complicated boot loaders,
I would install multiple systems on different disks and switch the boot
order in the bios. However, the debian installer made it so easy to install
Debian on to an unused partition and install GRUB in the MBR (after it found
all of the other bootable images). I was quite pleased and amazed. I can
even boot into images on the system that were not in the previous boot
loader.

FW: Evolution 2 ?

2004-10-21 Thread Gilbert, Joseph
I have seen a similiar issue as well. In my case, df was reporting large
negative numbers. Installing the coreutils package from testing is what
resolved that issue. This sounds different though. Are you running a mixed
system (i.e. packages from both woody and sarge) at all?

This may require some detective work. Can you post the output from the
dist-upgrade?

See my earlier post regarding the Sarge install. I installed it as a

This isn't a technical thing, so much as a motivation thing. I actually
remember the 3-4 years I was aware of things like "apt-get" and "Debian"
and "Microsoft Security bugs" and just couldn't be bothered to switch.
I remember exactly what went through my mind: (1) I already know how to
do cool things, it's scary to stop doing the cool things I already know
how to do; (2) even if it's cool, why should I work so hard when I'm
already cool and know how to run things like CygWin?; (3) why don't them
wierd Linux people just get a job like me and get an MSDN subscription;
I've got all the stuff I need for free; why do I care?

And I spent a month getting all Debian's eyecandy and hardware
acceleration working. And mutt was ridiculous at first compared to
Outlook. Now of course, I see the world very differently, but I just
don't know how to make someone else motivated to make this leap of

APIC error

2004-10-21 Thread Bob Underwood
I have a Giga-byte GA-7DPXW+ mobo with dual Athlon MP 2800+ cpus. The kernel
is a custom 2.6.8, basically the stock k7-smp kernel with PCMCIA, ACPI, and
OSS removed, compiled with gcc-3.3.

Trying to clone a hard disk using dd, i get the following error repetitively:

APIC error on CPU1: 00 (40)
APIC error on CPU1: 40 (40)
APIC error on CPU0: 00 (40)
APIC error on CPU0: 40 (40)

This continues with the 40 (40) until the process runs its course, or i kill
the process totally.

APIC error bits, listed in the
kernel-source: /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/kernel/apic.c only go from 0 through
7. Poking around google, I have found numerous references, all the way back
to the 2.2 series of kernels and none refer to error codes higher than 7.

Can someone give me a clue as to how to decipher this? or point me towards a
location where the question is more appropriate?

TIA

Bob

Wine still segfaulting

I previously wrote
I am running Sarge and have been very happy with the way that wine has

Does anyone know what is causing this?

applying non-debian patches and compling kernel the Debian way

2004-10-21 Thread H. S.
I usually use the Debian way of compiling the kernel as explained here:
http://newbiedoc.sourceforge.net/system/kernel-pkg.html
For this I have always used the kernel-source package from Debian. And
given this, I can apply the kernel-patches packaged for Debian. I was
wondering, can I apply non-Debian packages too to the kernel before
doing "make-kpkg --append-to.."?

Also, can I just download a pristine copy of the kernel (from kernel.org
e.g.), apply the corresponding patch that comes with it and others that
I may need and then continue the Debian-way from "make menuconfig"
onwards? Thus using make-kpkg to make a debfile to be installed with dpkg.

If you can refer me a URL that explains this (using pristine non-Debian
kernel source and Debian way of compiling it) even better.

Thanks,

RE: [OT] Debian advocacy for Smart but Scared People With Lives

2004-10-21 Thread Gilbert, Joseph
Totally makes sense all you said.

I have continued to be a primary Windows user with little thought of
changing over to using a Unix workstation, even though I have had them
before and am familiar with a lot of the trappings and what can and can't be
done. I viewed my approach as pretty powerful since I was able to utilize
the strengths of both platforms and minimize weaknesses.

Only now, am I really considering migrating completely away from Windows.
This is for two main reasons.

A) Not just the security issues of a windows environment (any piece of
software is likely to have exploitable bugs) but MS's handlings of these
issues and the problems that occur when trying to patch your system.

B) There are more than enough tools available in the open source environment
that there are options for all of the critical apps that I use frequently
that are actually quality choices. The only time I should need to boot into
Windows is when working with a vendor or content provider that has not
bothered to make sure that their site or software works on all platforms.

I have made the decision to stop updating my XP system automatically. I am
very leary of SP2. I know, as a system administrator, that an unpatched
system is going to bite you big sooner or later. So, in my eyes, the option
of migrating over to Linux and getting acquainted with all new applications
and rebuilding the way I work is much more attactive and has more long term
viability than trying to maintain my various Windows machines.

These same issues really apply to everyone who uses Microsoft products. In
order to survive, Microsoft is going to have reduce the cost and worry
associated with keeping a windows box up to date and also provide the fixes
necessary to keep them up to date. Despite their announcements that
security was going to be on the forefront for them, their implementations
have been clumsy and heavy handed.

As the Linux workstation grows in popularity, which it will, people's
evaluation of the equation between cost of migration vs. hassle of dealing
with Microsoft will tip.

It will be a bit of a sales job to get people to see the dangers and hassles
associated with dealing with a platform that has a sort of 'damned if you
do, damned if you don't' feel to its update procedures. They may not have
enough knowledge to see how hampered they are and how much better a
computing experience could be. A lot of people won't see it and you may
have to let them flounder until they realize they deserve more.

I hope my little dissertation helps.

Joe

cdrecord permissions problem in 2.6.8

There was a problem in 2.6.8 kernel where a normal user could not burn

which did not suffer that problem. I am wondering, is that problem fixed
now? I am planning to compile the 2.6.8 kernel source package from Debian.

I agree whole heartedly. I installed Debian Unstable on a Dell Inspiron

couple of years ago to install Woody!

The only glitch I faced was it didn't auto-detect the Broadcom 4400
series of 10/100 MBps ethernet adapter but it was listed in the list of
adapter it presented. I just had to select the right one (of course here
is where the knowledge about your hardware comes handy). I am sure the
installer is a work in progress, but it is coming along nicely.

BTW, some people have said that that red background screen is a bug.
However, at least on an LCD screen, it looks actually nice. Kind of
matches the Debian red logo.

Actually, you did (but not deliberately). Knoppix (from at least this

Susequent to posting this, I found a message that suggested booting with the
"noapic" option. This seems to have abated the original problem, however, I
still have found no reference to what I presume to be error codes: i.e., 40

FWIW there are several ways to search for files (google this group for

$apt-cache search gtop
libgtop2 - Libraries for gtop system monitoring library (part of Gnome 2)
drawmap - draws customized maps, using raw USGS data files
gnome-system-monitor - Process viewer and system resource monitor for GNOME 2
libgtop-daemon - gtop daemon for monitoring remote machines (part of Gnome)

gnome-system-monitor looks promising ;)

You'll find gnome-system-monitor via a "apt-cache search gtop",
provided you have entries for testing or unstable in your sources.list

Printing from Gimp

2004-10-21 Thread Freddy Freeloader
Hi All,
I have an HP OfficeJet 5500 set up to print through CUPS. I can get it
to print from OpenOffice, from a browser, etc My problem is in
getting it to print from Gimp.

There are no gimpprint drivers available for the OJ 5500, at least I
can't find any, and I have the 1.6.2 version of HPIJS installed, so I
downloaded the correct .ppd file and set Gimp up to use the printer as a
PostScript Level2 printer and browsed to the .ppd file and showed Gimp
where it is. There is an activity bar that runs across the bottom of
page showing Gimp getting ready to print, but nothing prints. The
spooler never shows any print jobs and neither does the CUPS printer or
print jobs page when connecting to it by browser. (All jobs except for
the Gimp jobs show up here and print successfully)

I am obviously configuring something wrong in Gimp, or I am missing a
software component somewhere, but what?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
TIA,
Gary

Exactly. I'd guess the best you could do is set them up with a dual
boot system, and beg them to try it for a week. Give them Evo for
mail, and OO. You better ensure everything works correctly "out of
the box", and is secured, or they'll just end up with yet another
insecure and unstable platform. You'll probably need to consider data
migration issues too. How to get their mail from Windows to Linux and
back again? You're also going to be their sysadmin for a while; do
you have remote access to their machines? Are they going to trust you
to be root on their machines?

Maybe you should wait until the next disaster befalls them (shouldn't
be long). They may then be better motivated to accept the challenge.

Dual Monitor Configuration - What Am I Missing?

2004-10-21 Thread Scarletdown

When I rebooted, I was able to watch the boot process on the TV (kinda

You want to have a file such as this:
=
#!/bin/sh

#type any additional commands you want to launch here

#Now launch the window manager
xfce-mcs-manager
xfwm4 --daemon
xftaskbar4 &
xfdesktop &
exec xfce4-panel
==

Save that as ~/.xsession. chmod 700 ~/.xsession

Not true: neither the soundcard nor the network card were detected
automatically. I think his network card was a 3com 3c59x or some
permutation of those letters. There's a "common" variety and a "less
common" variety. I googled whatever it was plus +debian and found out
some completely non-intuitive driver you could substitute for it, and
why Knoppix didn't support it out of box. Never could quite figure out
what the issue was with Alsa.

Of course I could have set there and dinked with it until it worked, but
that's what I told them they'd have to do and they don't want to do it.

They're still stuck in that "just run setup.exe" from the vendor's
website mindset.

Is it being used? I found when I disabled XDM, all my personalization
in .xinitrc was ignored. I moved them to .xsession, and all worked as
before. Others have mentioned that their system is exactly opposite
to mine, so try moving them to .xinitrc

Here's some additions to your startup file (whichever you end up
with). Note the mentions of .Xclients, .xmodmap, and .Xresources; I
use .Xclients to start up the _applications_ I want running in X.

  -- 8< snip ---
#!/bin/bash
#

userresources=$HOME/.Xresources
usermodmap=$HOME/.xmodmap
xclients=$HOME/.Xclients
sysresources=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/.Xresources
sysmodmap=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/.Xmodmap

# merge in defaults and keymaps
#
if [ -f $sysresources ]; then
  xrdb -merge $sysresources
fi

if [ -f $sysmodmap ]; then
  xmodmap $sysmodmap
fi

if [ -f $userresources ]; then
  xrdb -merge $userresources
fi

if [ -f $usermodmap ]; then
  xmodmap $usermodmap
fi

xset s off
env > ~/.xenv

if [ -f "$xclients" ]; then
  . $xclients
fi

exec /usr/bin/fluxbox
# exec /usr/bin/fvwm2
