Need some more details

1) What cd burner do you actually have, and how is it connected to your
computer
2) What version of linux are you running - run dmesg (or look in syslog) and
copy here the detection message from the operating system of your burner
during boot.
3) What program are you using to try and burn a cd, and how do you know it
can't detect your burner
4) What version of debian are you running (woody/sarge/unstable) and what
version of cdrtools are you using (most burner programs rely on cdrecord
which is in this package)

With this info, maybe someone here can help you.

as s keeling said .. search the archives ..
and/or search google/yahoo/et.al

- what is the output of dmesg
- is the cdrw listed

- is the cdrw device listed as a supported hardware in the
  cdrw hardware list ?

phpmyadmin Erroring out after upgrade

2004-11-26 Thread Trev Thorpe
Hey guys,

   Debian Sarge
   Running apache2 on port 8080

Used phpmyadmin as recently as earlier this week with no errors.

I've done upgrades via apt-get upgrade this week.

Currently if I try to goto my website http://websiteurl/phpmyadmin I am
brought to login screen, I login and error out
"192.168.255.1108080 could not be found, please check name and try again"

I can see the error here easily, NO COLON. This should be
192.168.255.110:8080 ..

Where can I make this adjustment ?

Two things... one, this is a Debian Linux mailing list, not a Mac OS X one,
so you're not likely to get much help. Second, stealing the operating

Try changing the "libpam" in the grep command to "libpam-" (this will make
it skip libpam0g). Just tested on my machine, and it did let me reinstall
libpam-modules and libpam-runtime. Hopefully this will fix your problem.

} Well.. considering many players can play uncompressed RAR files with a

} certainly the result doesn't follow the mp3 standard; it won't have
} correct headers at the beginning and will have extra headers in the
} middle of the file.

The MPEG layer-III audio standard does not have any file headers or
footers. MP3 is, in fact, a streaming format and only individual frames
(which are essentially packets) have headers. As such, a file consisting of
a sequence of frames can be concatenated with another file consisting of a
sequence of frames and form a standards-compliant resulting stream.

In practice, however, many (most?) mp3 files have an IDv3 tag, which is a
file footer. If you concatenate a stream onto the end of a stream with such
a footer, that footer will be interpreted as garbage sitting between valid
frames and will be either silently ignored or played as garbled noise,
depending on the player and the details of the stream encoding.

Rather badly. Discover takes care of loading appropriate modules for PCI
devices based on a hardware database that is as correct and complete as
a year of installer testing can make it. Hotplug takes care of USB
hardware, and can also load modules for PCI devices; it does this based
on information in the kernel modules themselves, which can occasionally
be wrong.

Hi guys,
I'm curious about the way a USB camera gets set up when plugged into a
Sarge / 2.6.9 system. I'm also using 'udev'. Anyone know the following?

When I plug in the camera, I assume there are three devices that must be
created in the /dev directory, no?

#1 : a device for the camera's plain old USB interface (i.e., ttyUSB1)
#2 : a device for the camera as a usb mass storage device (i.e., sda)
#3 : a device for the partition on that storage device (i.e., sda1)
Can anyone tell me which pieces of software are responsible for setting
up each of those devics?

You can try the package mp3wrap. From the man file:

  USAGE
  mp3wrap [options] OUTPUTFILE MP3FILE1 MP3FILE2 [MP3FILE3]...

  DESCRIPTION
Mp3Wrap joins two or more mp3 files in one large playable mp3
without losing filename and ID3 informations. You will obtain
  a file named OUTPUTFILE_MP3WRAP.mp3.

BTW, mp3splt (package mp3splt) does the reverse: cut an mp3 file in
several pieces.

to get updated packages that you will need to have 2.6.x kernels to run.

module-init-tools will be one of those packages you'll need, I suspect.

You might like to start here: http://www.backports.org/

Pretty much.

Be warned, it's called unstable for a reason. There are times when you
find that some things might break. It's rare, but it does happen.

Paul.

Mac user/ needs assistance

2004-11-26 Thread Bill Mullen
Hello:
I am running Mac OS X 10.2.8, want Panther 10.3 etc , have attempted
to use the SUPRNOVA.org web page with out success. I did download
Python, but either I am not using it properly or I did not download the
correct package. When ever I attempt to open the Bit-Torrent, the icon
appears when I click on it , then it fades out and nothing opens. I
hope some one can assist.

Thank you!!!

Re: Firefox 1.0, mailto, and mutt

2004-11-26 Thread Jim McCloskey
I asked earlier:

|> I used mozex with earlier versions of Firefox to bring up mutt in
|> response to clicking on mailto links.
|>
|> Does anyone know of a way of doing this also with Firefox 1.0?

Thanks very much indeed to all who responded. I ended up using the
`launchy' extension. This proved troublesome at first because every
effort to use it failed with the error:

ExtensionsManager: _updateManifests: no access privileges to
application directory, skipping

Google revealed a number of queries about this error, but no consistent
way of solving it (that I could find, at least).

However, when I upgraded to the version of firefox in unstable, the
launchy extension worked as advertised, and the error disappeared.

The `launchy' extension seems more geared towards a Windows environment
(in that it automatically detects and configures certain clients). For
Linux, you have to edit a file `launchy.xml' in:

~USER/.firefox/default/X.slt/chrome/

but the instructions on how to do this are clear, and there are good
examples to follow.

Thanks once more to all who offered help,

Jim

Upgrading from woody to ? sid

2004-11-26 Thread joebosak
I have woody installed but I'm starting to find packages are older than (for
example) kernel 2.6.9 seems to require. I'm not sure what to do - do I
upgrade to sid? How? Or is this what 'unstable' is about?

If I want to use unstable packages, do I just change stable to unstable in
my sources.lsit and let apt do the rest?

Kernel - not syncing

2004-11-26 Thread joebosak
I've compiled a few kernels using 2.6.9. ONe worked but I did not keep the
config. None of the ones I've done the Debian way (ie. through a deb file)
boot. The error message is:

Kernel panic - not syncing: No init found. Try passing init= option to
kernel.

Any ideas? I do have one 2.6.9 kernel that doesn't do this - but like I
said I don't have the configuration to hand. Doing it on a 486, and
compilation is taking 3-4 hours a shot, so I'm hoping someone can save me
more tiral and error!

Well.. considering many players can play uncompressed RAR files with a
bunch of mp3s in them, it's not surprising that this works. Though
certainly the result doesn't follow the mp3 standard; it won't have
correct headers at the beginning and will have extra headers in the
middle of the file.

Right, at the Lilo prompt press an F key, i don't recall which, i've
only used once or twice, there should be an option called "rescue",
boot the CD and you should have access to a shell (dash?) and from
there you can mount your partition, chroot, cd etc. etc.

Installer for Woody hangs

Hello I have an installation related problem with debian 3(Woody). I am
totally new to linux
and have probably done something stupid ,but very early in the installation
process the installer hangs. My machine has a Pentium 4, an Intel D915G

    MACHINE HANGS.

I have tried to install using the old 2.4 core and this is almost
sucessful.A warning appears towards the end ot the installation:

" Virtual device mapping   Your first IDE hard disk is not
connected as the primary master device   (/dev/hda). To get around
this most BIOS setups enable emulation so that the    first disk
is seen as IDE-0 in the boot environment. This emulation cannot
be detected by Linux or LILO. However,we can define /dev/hde as the first
hard disk in the LILO configuration to allow LILO to take
advantage of the   emulation. Would you like to enable the
mapping?"

When I finally boot the 2.4 core, I get a barrage of interrupts like
this:

   "unexpected interrupt ide2 status=0xd0
count =371"

The real device at hde2(which seems to be a DMA device from the installer
screen info)seems to be generating interrupts that aren't trapped but, linux
thinks hde2 is my swappartition. Why does linux set my hard disk to hde
and not hda? And is there anything I can do about it?

Any help gratefully accepted

I'd suggest you try to install Sarge instead of Woody, since it
is up-to-date, and Woody is about 2 years old. Sarge is also much
easier to install.

[OT] Splitting multipage TIFF files

2004-11-26 Thread Stephen Tait
Hi all!
A client has landed us with a bunch of CD's containing several large
multipage TIFF images. I ran them through our usual conversion tools
(namely a find script that passes the images through tiffsplit), and all
seemed fine and dandy.

However, on inspecting the output, it seems that half of the files are JPEG
encoded in a TIFF wrapper, which tiffsplit can't handle, and neither can
our £5000-worth of Adobe Capture. The result is a garblified TIFF that I
can't even render, let alone OCR.

A google returned the following snippet from the libtiff mailing list:
==

I have fixed that problem, thank you for report. We need to copy
contents of the TIFFTAG_JPEGTABLES tag.
> And what tags i must copy, to add support of TIFF files with JPEG

Well, if you have enough sample files you can experiment with all tags,
defined in ojpegFieldInfo (see tif_ojpeg.c file).
Best regards,
Andrey
==
Alot of that is greek to me, but it seems that the gist is that JPEG-TIFF
support has been added.

Does anyone know if these changes have made it into the current versions of
the Debian TIFF utils? Or do I need to build myself a customised TIFF
library (argh!)? Failing that, does anyone know of any alternate way to
batch-convert JPEG-TIFF's (preferably in Linux)? I've already tried using
imagemagick, but it has some serious problems dealing with multipage TIFFs
(namely trying to do all 80MB of a file at once, and running the system
into the ground).

If anyone out there has more of a clue than me, I'd be much obliged!

Thanks, setting BOOTLOGD_ENABLE to Yes did the trick!

with non-i386 you probably refer to AMD etc.? This laptop is an i686

You boot with the rescue CD, mount your partion RW, chroot your
partition, cd to the chrooted partition and then you can try to fix
the MBR.

Or in the case only the MBR is broken, you can use a boot floppy, on
Debian there's a script called "grub-floppy" that you can use to
create one.

This is something confusing me so long. Is it neccessary to make the
initrd file?
I just remember that i have read quite a lot articles about compiling
kernel on Linux, a lot of them do not tell that you must make the initrd
file.
I don't check the "RAM disk support" when "make meuconfig". Then should
i really need to add the step of making initrd file?

Any suggestions are appreciated!

Make sure to select your root disk driver and root filesystem as
built-ins and you won't need to worry about an initrd.

H.

The kernels Debian provides need to run on a broad number of machines

of an initrd which loads the modules needed for a particular machine.

Benedict

Exactly. Vesafb is not really the best example--it's there, but the
initrd's job is to get your root filesystem mounted. I believe you can
still use vesafb as a module without it being in the initrd, it just
gets loaded later in the boot process. If we take a look at a stock
debian kernel's initrd, we'd see modules for ide disk drives, raid
arrays, scsi disk drives, tons of filesystems, and a bunch of
miscellaneous drivers. Without an initrd to give the kernel access to
these modules, they would all have to be built in leaving all users with
a gigantic kernel with many unneeded built-in features.

Michael Spang

Good explanation. Thanks.

Yesterday tried rc2: same thing. Freezes at "installing partitioner".
BUT: using the default, no boot options, works ok. It installs 2.4.27.
Question:
Linux26 installs 2.6.8.1 which I would not use anyway. What is the
difference between using the d-i default, then installing the 2.6.9
kernel image,

and
using the linux26 option (if it worked) and *then* installing the 2.6.9
kernel image?

There must be more differences than just the kernel image, otherwise why
would it consistently hang using linux26?

Booting with linux26 causes the installer to run using a 2.6 kernel.
FWIW, today I booted rc2 2x in expert26 and 1x in linux26 with success.
Yesterday linux26 hung in "setting up makedev"
11/24/2004 linux26 hung once in "Installing Partitioner" and once in
"DEBUG: virtual package HD detection".
I am keeping a list of when OK and when not: same rc2, same system, same
partition.

I suppose you want little thought bubbles to pop up in the corner of

I'm using kernel 2.6.9 from unstable, tried 2.6.8 also with exactly
the same problem. I don't explicitly load fb device. lsmod shows me
fbcon, font and vesafb modules loaded, which I can unload. greping

Hmm... this is now a mere guessing by me, but i had a similiar effect
here on my IBM thinkpad. Could the Problem be related to some APM/ACPI
interrupt stuff? For me was it as i first used the 2.6 series of the
kernel with APM enabled instead of acpi, i would move the mouse and a
second later it'd be out of sync and my cpu on max load.

But as i do not really know about your notebook, this is, as said, just
a guess.

Help: dselect screwed up!

2004-11-26 Thread MagicWind
I am using debian sarge, and i use dselect to install softwares. However, when
i tried to install the mysql-server component and followed all of the
suggestions to solve dependence conflicts, (which added about 5 or 6 other
components). When it proceeded to the configure step, the screen rolled up with
many mistakes, and at the bottom saying "Unknown error 900", followed by a
segmentation error, then my filesystem(which is xfs) halted.
I rebooted and checked my filesystem carefully and found a nearly 2GB file
named "available" in /var/lib/dpkg/, I thought it was the prob and deleted it.
However, i still cannot use dselect(and of course any tools of dpkg-***) which
always returns a "segmentation fault" and halts. Any idea?

That was exactly the position I was in originally - unable to see the

How can I do it?

Crtl-Alt sequence differently. But then, Ctrl-Alt-Del did shut the X server
down, so that may not be the case.

I started suspecting the problem may indeed come from the X server. I run the
latest version (4.3.0.dfsg.1-8) but, as CRT did not work then, I installed the
enhanced GATOS ati.2 driver on top of it. The overall behavior is satisfactory
but not without bugs: DRI works, CRT works if the cable is plugged at boot
time.
Could it be that the console problem (as the zooming problem) is related to
that ?

Maybe I should try to revert to the pristine X server distributed by debian
first to check that out. I'm a bit reluctuant to break the DRI though. I'll
keep you posted anyways.

Besides, you are right Alt+Fn suffices to change tty in the console, I had just
never realised that.

Thanks,

Shan

I've now found that it does open with gv, surprisingly.

I accept I may have posted in a moment of irritation but I have
downloaded a number of other manuals for other products at different
times and none of them has ever required a particular viewer previously.
I don't think that it requires exceptional benevolence on the part of
manufacturers to provide PDFs of their manuals on their websites, since
this will presumably encourage people to buy their products if they know
they can obtain such information in the future.

So Canon sell you a print manual. You lose it. You get a free
electronic replacement, and it doesn't work on a minority OS which CAN
view documents written for earlier versions of the same software. So
you lambast them on a forum which they probably don't read.

How about you raise your concerns with Canon instead of complaining
behind their backs? They might do something about it.

(Does Acrobat Reader 6 work in under WINE? That might be another
solution to the problem.)

Jeez, I think you're overreacting a bit. Reader 6.0 has been out
for a while now. Is it any wonder that companies are generating
PDFs for it?

The people you should vent your spleen to is Adobe. Then, send
them a nice letter asking for a Linux version of Reader 7.0.

Those settings also look fine. This does not appear to be a
misconfiguration. Try reinstalling the PAM libraries (all one line):

dpkg -l | grep "libpam" | awk '{print $2}' | xargs apt-get install
--reinstall

This won't help you figure out what broke, but it should fix it. If you want
to find out exactly what the problem is, run 'su' under 'strace' to see

Yes. The script is run in a subshell, sets the variable, and when the
script is finished, the subshell terminates. You need to set the
variable in the current shell. Run

. ./A10hook

Understand that you're trying to define something that will be
available to the current process, and all children of that process.
Already existing processes won't know about it, and after that process
exits, the newly defined value disappears.

#!/bin/sh
export PATH=/usr/lib/ccache:$PATH
now_run_something & # <-- new value of PATH will be visible to this.

Also, consider:

   COLUMNS=120 dpkg -l

That defines a new value to COLUMNS for that one invocation of dpkg
only. No export necessary, and the new definition disappears when
that dpkg process exits.

Hi Olive

I've got xfontsel here on my sid system; it would appear to be provided

You could try typing xfontsel at the command line.

All other programs (as far as I can see) have no trouble using DNS. The

I vaguely recall having similar problems with exim3 long ago, which I

All of the exim4 configuration files are original,

OK, solved it. When you have eliminated the impossible
I'm using an Alcatel Speedtouch V3.7 ADSL router, which contains a

The Woody installation has a caching server, I didn't think I'd bother
with the new one as there is one in the router.

Aaah, that's a known problem, caused by a bug in the native CUPS
backport in 1.1.2. You have two options to try:

1. Try removing any extra CUPS instances that you have for the printer.
2. See /usr/share/doc/openoffice.org/README.Debian.gz and follow the

Hrm interesting, I have openoffice.org-1.1.2dfsg1-3 installed here; I opened

Just to be sure I saved it and reopened it after closing writer and
it's still fine.

So you mean system users (those with accounts in /etc/passwd) as opposed to
virtual users (users that only exist in some service's user database).

AFAIK, there is no such command. However, users created by tools such as
adduser start at UID 1000, so anything with a lower UID was either a
default account created at install time or created by a software package,
and should not be touched without good reason.

Of course - just remove the entries from /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow.
However, I would strongly recommend you NOT do this (unless you want to

oix,

I agree with Jeremy and Chris. Samsung is doing it well.

I have a ML-2151N, and i'm already on my 4th 8000 pages toner (plus the

have the extra of PS and Network, and that made it even easier to install,
since it works as any other generic postscript lp print server, but I tried

Script to Set Environment Variable?

2004-11-26 Thread ms419
How do I write a script to set an environment variable?
I feel like I should know this. I want to set my PATH in pbuilder & the
author suggested using an "A" hook. However, I can't create a hook - an
executable - which sets an environment variable.

I tried:
#!/bin/sh
export PATH=/usr/lib/ccache:$PATH
and just:
export PATH=/usr/lib/ccache:$PATH
but in either case, calling ./A10hook doesn't change my environment
variable. I hope I'm just missing something foolishly obvious.

Forgot about that, but yes, it only works as root also for me.

Switching ttys in the console should work with only Alt-Fn, no control.

Look in your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and see if you have a SERVERFLAGS section
with an entry

   Option "DontVTSwitch" "true"

If you have then remove it, and if you don't try adding

   Option "DontVTSwitch" "false"

and see if it works (you may need to add the serverflags section for this).

I want some commands executed when I login, but not when a shell is
otherwise run, so I put them in my ~/.login, vs. my ~/.bashrc.
Unfortunately, they aren't executed when I open an xterm.
I hoped there might be a ~/.xtermrc I could put them in, but I haven't
found mention of an xterm initialization script anywhere in the
documentation.
Also, I thought I could configure xterm to start as if with the -ls
flag. Anyway, there's probably a reason it doesn't, like a login shell
might break some application using xterm?
Where should I put them?
Well, ".bash_profile" is executed for login shells and ".bashrc" is
executed for non-login shells.
If you want to set some environment variables or execute some commands
only when xterm are launched, you can add a condition in your
".bashrc", something like:
case $TERM in
xterm*)
echo "This is an XTerm"
;;
*)
echo "This isn't an XTerm"
;;
esac
Hope this helps.
That's awesome! Thanks! These lines work great, in .bash_profile for
login shells & .bashrc for xterms:

if [ -n "$PS1" ]; then
if [ -z "$STY" ]; then
# An interactive shell without screen.
exec screen -xRR
else
# An interactive shell within screen.
alias grep="grep --color"
alias ls="ls --color"

I second the support for Samsung. I recently bought the ML-1740, and on
the side of the box it actually states support for Linux. I saw the
other day on some site like BestBuy.com or something that it was selling
for $100 with a $50 mail-in rebate (total cost, $50). I don't know how
useful that is to you over in Europe, but dirt cheap. I'm just about
out of the first toner cartridge. They say it's good for 1000 pages.
It has worked well with CUPS and Samba. In Sarge, I used the PPD from
the ML-1710 model.

No complaints here.

Re: Problem of compiling kernel

2004-11-26 Thread Lian Liming

Perhaps you need to compile an initrd and you forgot to give the
--initrd
option to make-kpkg...

In printer settings, paper the field for the paper size is blank and the

For documents created earlier the paper size is US Letter and the duplex
setting is Simplex.

Neither File/Printer Settings/Properties nor oppadmin will allow me to
make entries in the blank paper size field or the duplex field. The
pull down menus for these fields contain no other options.

Are you using the fb, and maybe don't have something important
compiled into the 2.6.9 kernel?

What XFree video driver are you using?

This has worked well for me. My laptop is usually docked (I retired
my desktop), and when I un-dock it the network shuts down
automatically. Re-connect ethernet and it comes back up.

You also might want to subscribe to the debian-laptop list if you
haven't already.

Hi Jake,
I am having the same problem. After an upgrade to Apache2 2.0.51-2
(testing) my ssl site also does not work. I haven't gone so far as to
purge and reinstall the packages yet. Using netstat -l does not show
anything listening on my port 443. There doesn't seem to be anything
in my apache logs that would indicate either that the ssl version of
the server has started or not started except for the lack of hostname

The Maxtor 5000XT has a USB and a Firewire port. Initially it was
easier for me to get the USB connection to work but after some reading
getting the Firewire version to work was fairly simple too with the
ohci1394 and sbp2 modules. If your drive does not have a Firewire
port I do not think I can help you.

Re: Switching from X to ttys

2004-11-26 Thread Shan Mignot
All right, here is how things behave:

* as a normal user (shan):
[EMAIL PROTECTED] /dev > chvt 2
Couldnt get a file descriptor referring to the console
zsh: exit 1 chvt 2

[EMAIL PROTECTED] /dev > chvt 1
Couldnt get a file descriptor referring to the console
zsh: exit 1 chvt 2

* as root things work just fine and from the tty I can change tty using
Ctrl+Al+Fn

Here an except from ls in /dev:

crw--- 1 root root 4, 0 2004-10-08 10:49 tty0
crw--- 1 shan tty 4, 1 2004-11-26 16:02 tty1
crw--- 1 root root 4, 2 2004-11-26 16:02 tty2
crw--- 1 root root 4, 3 2004-11-26 11:10 tty3
crw--- 1 root root 4, 4 2004-11-26 11:10 tty4
crw--- 1 root root 4, 5 2004-11-26 11:10 tty5
crw--- 1 root root 4, 6 2004-11-26 11:10 tty6

crw--w 1 root root 4, 9 2000-07-05 19:43 tty9

Could it be that the permissions are not right ? But then why won't it work
while shan is the owner of tty1 ?

I've also taken a look in the XF86Config-4 file and haven't seen anything like
disabling that behavior. Any idea what it would look like ?

Any further idea ?
Thanks a lot for your help.

network & laptop

2004-11-26 Thread Alberto Bert
Hi all

I'm running Debian testing on a laptop, and I'm always moving with my
computer in different laboratories, with different networks.

In order to manage the net configuration I'm now using quickswitch,
which is not bad, but it's not a Debian package :-(

Is there a way to have the same functionality by using a package?
It would be nice to be able to choose the netwokr configuration
(avalilable printers, programs to run, etc.) at boot time, also.

Thanks,
cheers,
Alberto

I find that mutt works better with imap if INBOX doesn't contain
messages, but is instead a folder containing only message
folders. This way I can use the C key to browse the full folder
structure (not just the ones named by the 'mailboxes' option).

mutt needs a configured local mailserver (exim, postfix or the like)
though I've recently found smtppush to be very useful for sending

It never stopped being used. Debian used runlevel 2 as the standard runlevel
forever AFAIK.

The 3 vs. 5 runlevel is a Red-Hat standard, not a linux standard. Debian uses 2
as regular and 1 IIRC as single user.

The others are there if you wan't to create custom ones.

You can just remove/disable the display manager (kdm/wdm/xdm/gdm) if you don't
want X to startup automatically.

Try as a start to do "chvt 1" and see if that switches (just to make sure it
works).

Its also possible to disable that behavier in XF86Config-4, could it be that you
disabled it?

OOppps sorry for the dumb question then... I guess I installed two
many woody's servers and too few desktops... I must admit I used a
couple of other distros as desktops, and I always tought of runlevel5 vs
runlevel3 difference as standart... Sorry about that.

I'm enlightened now!
Thanks for the fast reply

They couldn't have stopped, because they had never started. The default
run-level for Debian is two, and has been so since pre-Potato.

What YOU are referring to is a RedHat-ism. Debian, on the other hand, sets
run-levels two through five to be identical, and leaves it up to the admin
how he wants to set them up.

Boot problem: Hang up on synchronising system clock to hardware clock

2004-11-26 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
On a machine we recently installed (testing) we have this problem at boot

Hang up on synchronising system clock to hardware clock

Then if you Ctrl + C the boot procedure goes ahead. It stops again with the
same message. If you Ctrl + C again, the boot procedure goes ahead
successfully and completes.

Any solution?

Thanks in advance.

I'm using sarge intalled with rc2 business-card installer
Joao Clemente
You can have a look at /etc/rcN.d/ (N is the runlevel) and remove the
linkage which will start X when bootup
I think the runlevel standards in debian are't exactly as you wrote
before, it only depends on the linkages in the directory /etc/rcN.d/ ,
and you can modify it as needed.
At least as long as I have used debian (more than five years) my computer
and all instalations I have made booted by default to runlevel 2...

For localhost as well as internal LAN usage with not much
sophisticated configs, I find boa to be sufficient - it's lightweight,
and the packaged boa just works out of the box.

Looks like it. As long as there would be users for that architecture
who'd be willing to maintain then it'll live even through EOLs (like
the Alpha EV chips)
