ldap admin password

2005-05-18 Thread Lars Jensen
Hi,

Where is the ldap admin password. I'm trying to set up ldap and are
getting some authentication errors when running the migrationtools. I
noticed that there's no rootpw statement in slapd.conf.

Don't I need a rootpw statement to run the ldaptools?

Thanks.

Lars.

That happened to me recently. I found that I had Mozills'a "Don't accept
graphics from sites other than the one you're talking to" option set,
and that allowing graphics from the universe fixed the problem.

I tried a little to tell them about it, but [EMAIL PROTECTED] doesn't

Martin,
You say, "I never get to hear myself..." but does the level metre move?
I mean does it respond when you talk into your mike? I think in
audacity, the default is that you don't hear yourself while you're
recording but you push some button (sorry don't remember what it's
called) and then you do hear. The important thing is if you see the
metre responding the it is receiving input. If nothing happens then
there's a problem.

Hi Kamaraju,
this is a comment, not an answer. Those boxes are an indication that
there is a missing or unrecognized unicode font, or a misconfigured
application font preference. One of the things I would love to see is an
application where you could input the 0c66 and output what font would be
needed, possibly what debian package would be needed. This should be for
any of the non-latin fonts in Debian. There was a recent tibetan font
added to Debian, but exactly how would I know that it is correctly
installed , what application I can use it with and how to configure that
application.
Any way, good luck!

Firefox recognize and use ALSA?

Can you play MIDI files with pmidi? You'll have to do some setup work before
you hear any sound unless you have a hardware synth attached to the
soundcard.

How would I know if there is a "synth" attached to the soundcard?

This did help me to get MIDI working:
http://houghi.org/user/ch19s09.html
The article seems to change locations every now and then, I've had at least
three locations go invalid over time. Searching for "ALSA and MIDI" on Google
usually does the trick, the page title should be "19.9. ALSA and MIDI".

Thank you for the reference. I've read it. However, it refers to KDE.
This system is using the Debian default, Gnome. Since I have no idea
what the Gnome equivalents are, it doesn't help me much. :)

If you're interested in better MIDI quality than most consumer soundcards can
handle, I recommend you have a loot at timidity which can also be used as a
synth for ALSA:
http://timidity.sourceforge.net/

I've looked up timidity in the package lists. Other info I've found
seems to indicate it's resource heavy. So, it would be a last resort.
Frankly, as long as the sound is halfway reasonable (meaning it doesn't
grate on the senses), I don't care about quality.

Sets of MIDI patches can be found all over the net. I use the Titanic
Soundfont, but that's too big for most cards and needs quite some CPU power.
There are smaller ones that can be loaded with sfxload, but don't expect too
much (Creative usually ship an 8MB Soundfont on their driver discs).

I have no idea what you're talking about here.

labs there has not been one seen in the wild. They have tried really
hard to FUD users into buying their products but generally have failed.

What is annoying is being forced to incl a anti-virus package on a Linux
server to protect Windows clients and then have the same a-holes claim
anti-virus software is a neutral thing in TCO calcs as it is always
needed.

Most virii operate with only windows and only Outlook, so it usually
takes both for a successful virus spread.

On linux we have neither.

Worms etc are another matter, you can do a lot to harden a box, then add
a firewall and then run some services on non-standard ports, eg ssh on
say 49 (or something). While this is not going to stop a live hacker who
scans, it will defeat lots of automated bots searching for a vulnerable
sshd implementation.

True. But up until I switched my server from Woody to Sarge a couple
of weeks ago, I was running the *Woody* version of ddclient! There
are no issues of which I am aware that prevent an older client from
speaking the correct protocol.

I'd try and use ATA if possible. ATAPI doesn't use DMA so you're more
prone to making coasters. See if "cdrecord -scanbus dev=ATA" shows anything.

Hello,

Does anyone else have the same problem I have when trying
to view the www.amazon.co.uk website using firefox? All
the buttons and various other graphics (such as the label
to print out to return an item) are invisible.

The site displays correctly using epiphany (but printing

I am running sarge, with version 1.0.3-2 of the
mozilla-firefox package.

Thanks for the suggestion, Roberto. I'll try Sun's, following your

I think the yardstick to go by is to use Sun's if you need the most

Re: iptables and masquerading: how to allow vpnc from lan

 `---'
CompR(which contains eth0 and eth1) is the router computer (doing NAT or
IP masquerading) running iptables and doing masquerading. ppp0, the ADSL
modem, has my external internet address given by my ISP. eth1 is
192.168.2.10 and eth0 is 192.168.0.1. My LAN is 192.168.0.0/16.
Before I set up this computer I had a D-Link router in its place with
the option of VPN enabled. At that time, a Windows machine in my LAN was
able to connect to an external VPN server(at my university) using a VPN
client (Cisco's) and was able to sustain the connection.
After I set up my router computer(and removed D-Link router), the
Windows client can connect to the external VPN server but cannot sustain
the connection. The connection seems to be breaking multiple times every
hour. I have been trying various rules (searched from google) and have
this stanza relating to this in CompR's iptables rules set:
# --- IN ---
for VPNS in $VPN_SERVERS; do
$IPTABLES -A INPUT -p udp -s $VPNS \
-i $EXTIF --dport 500 -j ACCEPT
done
# --- OUT ---
for VPNS in $VPN_SERVERS; do
$IPTABLES -A OUTPUT -p udp -d $VPNS \
-o $EXTIF --dport 500 -j ACCEPT
done
$IPTABLES -A FORWARD -i ${EXTIF} -p tcp --dport 500 -j ACCEPT
$IPTABLES -A FORWARD -i ${EXTIF} -p udp --dport 500 -j ACCEPT
$IPTABLES -t nat -A PREROUTING -p udp -i ${EXTIF} \
   --dport 500 -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.0.15:500
After the Windows client (192.168.0.15) connects, I do not see any
traffic any 500 port when I use "iptables -nvL" command to see what is
going on in CompR. Looks like none of the above rules is accepting any
packets at all.
Dunno much about iptables even though I run it in the same setup as
yourself. But you can find out what is happening to your awol packets on
the output of that command by seeing which chain is dropping them all.

Also check out your nat chains with iptables -t nat -nvL

It's a play on the word "suck". If software sucks, its bad. If a
vacuum sucks, it is working.

You could also interpret it as Microsoft can't do anything right so if

then install the client application on the computer in order to refresh the

ATI driver errors after last dist-upgrade ([fglrx:firegl_rmmap] *ERROR* map 0xde28ff10 still in use)

2005-05-18 Thread Erik Steffl
after last aptitude ugg (upgrade of everything) I suddenly see huge
number of error message like this in /var/log/syslog:

May 17 22:02:37 jojda kernel: [fglrx:firegl_rmmap] *ERROR* map
0xde28ff10 still in use (map_count=1)

there is huge number of them (436 between May 18 07:45:31 and May 18
11:55:01) and thery seem to be printed even if there's no openGL app
running.

  relevant system info:
  debian unstable
  kernel 2.6.9
  Radeon 9800 Pro
  ati driver: fglrx_4_3_0-8.10.19-1.i386.rpm (via alien)
more details: openGL used to work before last upgrade, no error
messages. It still works but it freezes for short periods of time (when
the messages are written to syslog) so it's not very usable anymore.

haven't found much info on google, except of somebody suggesting
setting UseFastTLS "2" (instead of default 0) in X config, haven't tried
that yet but does anybody know more details? Apparently it's some change
in X server that triggers this problem (don't know whether it's ati
driver problem or X server problem).

  any details?
  TIA
erik

Looks like the author himself was planning to package it at one point. If I'm
reading the bug report right, that is. Which I'm probably not ;)

Anyway. Normally, you'd see a list of problems holding back the package, but
there don't seem to be any follow up issues for jailkit, so maybe he just
lost interest:

... if I remember rightly, you recently posted your dmesg output
which showed your single ethernet card being recognized twice - as
eth0 (associated with the via Rhine driver) and eth1 (associated
with the 8139too driver). Since 8139too seems to be the correct
driver, but ifconfig shows eth0, could the problems stem from your
having the wrong driver from the card?

As I said, pure surmise; I have no idea how these things work :-{

Cheers,
David

Hi List!
I have to connect with iodbc to mysql-4 server.
I tried all the setting I can imagine and I get
always "No DSN entered" error.

1: SQLDriverConnect = [MySQL][ODBC 3.51 Driver]No DSN entered (516)
SQLSTATE=HY000
1: ODBC_Connect = [MySQL][ODBC 3.51 Driver]No DSN entered (516)
SQLSTATE=HY000

I would be really thankful for any help especially configfiles what are
really working.

I use Sarge, all the packages are the official ones.
I installed
libiodbc2, iodbc
libmysqlclient 10,12,14
libmyodbc
mysql-client-4.1
mysql-common-4.1
myqsl-navigator
mysql-query-browser, mysql-query-browser-common
mysql-server-4.1

Hi,
as suggested by you all I have upgraded my system to bf24 and now am able to get a so so X. The X throughput is still not great.
But the 2 problems still come to haunt me time and again
1) I still cant install the intel dri driver package

newer than the above date, look for a newer version before
     reporting problems.  (See http://www.XFree86.Org/FAQ)
Build Operating System: Linux 2.4.17 i686 [ELF]

and my lsmod is ---

2) I still cant apt-get update (the same problem i.e. (1.0.0.0) hang persists.)
I suspect the route output will give you a clue ---

Why not just use the kernel config from the Ubuntu kernel,
or compare the two kernels configs, seems that maybe Debian
has something left out of the config. Could very well be a
bug you might want to file a bug report against that kernel
version.

You don't consider that an error? Shouldn't hotplug see if there's
anything to do before bulling ahead and doing it? A simple grep of
/etc/modules would create an exclude list.

Sure. Is the design correct? :-) Better yet, this should be classed
as an implementation, not design, issue. The design isn't changed by
adding that sanity check to hotplug.

Sounds like you had bad downloads. Perhaps you clicked "Save As" on the
links and got *.htm files instead of the .deb and .tar.bz2? Have you
tried "file" on the files you downloaded? I downloaded the deb, was
able to open it in mc and installed it. (I used the Kent mirror, if
that makes a difference). I haven't tried the scp feature yet.

k3b screwing up cdrecord, [was: cdrecord failiure with kernel 2.6.8-2-686]

2005-05-18 Thread Vegard|drageV
Hi list,
I just posted concerning cdrecord problems, wich I got help solving.
Still, solving one made me discover another problem.

Using cdrecord from commandline, I can burn cd's untill I have tried
to open k3b once. The k3b-splashimage hangs on 'Searching for
devices'. If I try 'cdrecord -scanbus dev=ATAPI' or any other cdrecord
option the terminal window hangs and cdrecord can not find the
devices.

The problem seems to be isolated on k3b, but how??? Now that I know
cdrecord works well, I find this very strange.

Kernel 2.6.8-2-686, debian sarge

Does anybody have any clue?

Cheers Vegard

This bug has been fixed, I've been told. Besides that shouldn't matter
here, caus' I have the same problemes as root as well as normal user.

ATA didn't work for me, but but ATAPI did:

cdrecord -v speed=4 dev=ATAPI:0,1,0 image.iso

Thanks for the good tip, I can now burn using cdrecord from commandline.

No, its not broken. There are a certain modules which get loaded by default
from /etc/modules. Then later when hotplug starts up its hardware probe it
tries to load the corresponding module, but finds that its already loaded
and print that message. If you don't want that message, don't allow the
kernel to load that particular module.

Its working as designed.

It's a play on the word "suck". If software sucks, its bad. If a

rsync bug with symlinks ?

2005-05-18 Thread Ioannou Ioannis
I have two machines in the LAN running Sarge, and I want to rsync (mirror)
specific directories from one to another, let say from pc1 -> pc2

On pc2 I have rsync running as server and the rsyncd.conf contains an alias :

[ALL]
path = /

(there is a reason why I have all of the filesystem as alias.)

On pc1 I'm running something like :

rsync -azu -v /etc.pc2/ pc2::ALL/etc.pc2/

Unfortunately this breaks specific symlinks, like :

/etc.pc2/X11/X -> usr/bin/X11/XFree86

instead of the correct /usr/bin/X11/XFree86.

Also the same is happening with relative symlinks, like :

/etc.pc2/myrelative -> ../usr/local/etc/myrelative

becomes

/etc.pc2/myrelative -> usr/local/etc/myrelative

I have tried -R , -L , and --copy-unsafe-links
without any result. What I'm missing ?

TIA

I tried that. Now when I boot I get:

vesafb: Unknown symbol cfb_copyarea
vesafb: Unknown symbol cfb_imageblit
vesafb: Unknown symbol cfb_fillrect
pivot_root: No such file or directory
/sbin/init: 431: cannot open dev/console: No such file
Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init!

Well, disaster. I guess I have to do a reinstall.
I can use a live cd to look at and change files, so if anybody has any
idea of why this
may have happened and where to look on the hd, please reply. IMO
things like this
shouldn't happen (so it may be a bug somewhere).

There is an GNOME applet with similar functions, called
hardware-monitor.

Thanks everyone. I now have a very nice collection of debian books and
documents and have printed out some. I'll wait for the next edition of
debian linux bible.

A friend told me to chekout aboutdebian.com in the books section and
there are some good references there I saw. Debian linux bible is
mentioned there too.

Quite true. But it seems far more likely that that person can speak
German than say, someone from a US based account. It's hard enough to
get us speaking English properly, as is... ;-)

Correct.

When it tries to start X, it stands there switching between black

Try dpkg-reconfigure kernel-image-*. If there is still the problem, I
recommend getting a new kernel-image.

iptables and masquerading: how to allow vpnc from lan

2005-05-18 Thread H. S.
Hi,

I am running an old computer as a router using Debian Sarge and kernel
2.6.10 kernel and iptables 1.2.11-10. Here is my setup:

CompR
 ,---.
(INTERNET) -->ppp0--->eth1eth0 >SWITCH--->192.168.0.0/24

What am I doing wrong here? I have never dealt with this, VPN, situation
before. Do I need to open other ports or allow other protocals? If
somebody could shed some light on this, it would be great.

thanks,
->HS

The best way to solve the problem is that she have a dynamic dns. There are
many websites supply free dynamic dns. You can find and register one. And
then install the client application on the computer in order to refresh the

Then NSS must, as u told me, search this posix account for joining the
domain samba.

Another thing :
i got a problem joining my windows com to the LDAP :
smbldap-useradd test5$
pdbedit -a -m -u test5$ says that the account cannot be found cause
the sambaSID is missing...
Perhaps that's why i cannot join the samba domain too !

One of the first things I would check is top, see if it

two cpu's, I do not know how it lists a logical cpu, but I
am sure google can find it out for you.
I know many moons ago when I tried the installer on sarge it
only seen one cpu, seems that they do not include an smp
aware kernel with the installer, that might of changed a
while ago. If that is the case just make your own, or
download a smp aware kernel with apt-get. That was with dual
amd MP cpus, was many moons ago, probably going on a good
nine months.

You just might want to keep it to one cpu as HyperThreading
has a security bulletin against it, found in the BSD's
probably effects all OS's. Check the news its all over the
web if you want to find out more.
Gnu-Raiz

top only sees one cpu. Haven't tried dmesg. Will try when I get to the
machine again.

The installer finds (I guess) a HT cpu because it lists as a choice the
2.6.8 smp kernel. When I try to use that kernel, the machine fails to
boot, so I choose 2.6.8 and it boots fine. Then I download and install
the 2.6.11-1 kernel. It boots up fine but system monitor does not see 2
cpu's. Other than that, the system seems fine.

The exact same system running Ubuntu with kernel 2.6.10-7 smp sees the
dual (HT) cpu's. I've also had FC3 installed and it sees the HT cpu as 2
cpu's.

Seems the two smp kernels I've tried with debian both display their own
set of problems that I don't see with other distros or other distros
based on debian.

Strange, I have this one :

(it matches a kernel from sid)

you are running your privately compiled kernel ? have you tried with

Having a gmx.ch address does not imply that you one is Swiss (in
fact, if my last name was "Schweizer", I might get a gmx.ch address
even if I lived in Iceland), and being Swiss certainly does not
imply you speak German.

Re: problem with microphone and alsa -> no sound?

2005-05-18 Thread Martin A. Hansen
ok

i have now gone over the reports in the mail achive and they seem to be
concered with missing
capture or mic level set to 0.

however, i dont think that is the problem here, because according to the amixer
dump i posted,
that is not the case here:

Simple mixer control 'Mic',0
Capabilities: pvolume pvolume-joined pswitch pswitch-joined cswitch
cswitch-joined cswitch-exclusive
  Capture exclusive group: 0
  Playback channels: Mono
Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Playback 0 - 31
  Mono: Playback 31 [100%] [on]
  Front Left: Capture [on]
  Front Right: Capture [on]

so any suggestions are indeed most welcome.

best regards

martin

I think, he should install RealPlayer for Linux,
which works with Streaming from the Internet.

Yes, much preferable if he can manage it. But I didn't want to confuse him

Oh, I meant to say:

If you're using GNOME, there should be a similar "root terminal" option. If
not, open a terminal and then type "su -", followed by return. It will ask
you for a password, then you'll have permission to install software. If you
want to install things that need a GUI, you'll have to do this next:

export DISPLAY=:0 XAUTHORITY=~username/.Xauthority

In KDE, go to the menu. Then choose System->More Applications->Terminal
Program (super user mode). That will ask you for a password, then give you a
"root shell", which has permission to install software.

There is a realplayer version for Linux. Do not use the WINE version if there
is already a Linux version. It won't be as good.

Once you install RealPlayer, you can choose what program to open files with
from your control panel.

Note: Xine (and Kaffeine, and mplayer, and some other players too) can play
realplayer files, if you install the Linux realplayer codec files from the
internet.

As long as you have 'testing' instead of 'sarge' in your sources.list
everything should work fine. I suspect that since sarge is now frozen,
there will be a build up of packages in 'sid' awaiting transition to
testing once 'etch' become testing. So immediately after sarge goes
stable you will experience a large upgrade of packages. I suggest you
have 'apt-listbugs' installed prior to that so that you can make sure
that nothing vital is going to break.
