Using glibc debug version with gcc

Hi All,

How do I tell gcc to use the debug version of glibc ?

I installed libc6-dbg but I just can't find out how to direct gcc to use
the debug version of the libraries. I searched gcc's manual and googled
around but couldn't find out what certainly should be a trivial command
line option.

OOM = out of memory.

The OOM killer is responsible for killing processes when the system is
running out of virtual memory (so the system itself will "stay alive").

(In your case it hit the X server -- which might be considered
suboptimal, with respect to keeping damage to the end user to a
minimum... ;)

Installing Yahoo Messenger 6.0 under wine

Hello All,

I have been experimenting with Wine and it has been a pretty smooth road
till I planned to install Yahoo Messenger 6.0 in Wine. It was written on
the winhq.com database that YM6.0 was able to run under wine. My Wine
installation is an independent one, i.e. it does not use the actual
Windows partition I already have. I got the yahoo messenger installer
file ymsgrie.exe for yahoo 6.0 by copying it off my Windows partition
Yahoo Messenger installation. When I try to start the installation, wine
gives the following error(or warnings?), and stops:

no it does not ...

- you can simulate a missing disk ( at least the missing MBR )
  to see if it boots the other disk

dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/hda bs=448 count=1

- if it doesn't boot... you never had raid properly configured anyway

- to do booting tests ( lilo or grub or syslinu or ?? ) reqwuires you or
  somebody have phyical access to the machine in case thngs go bonkers
- if you do not have physical access, one assume you know what you
are doing

the warning is exactly correct...
- if you install on /dev/hdb or /dev/hdc .. etc.e.tc..
it will warn you if the system has /dev/hda

lilo and grubs error messages can all be cleaned up .. if you wanna fix
error messages .. and internationalize it too so that someone else
doesnt need to fix it again later

lilo NEVER overides lilo.conf settings

an incorrectly defined lilo.conf will screw up your system and render
it non-bootable ... or incrorect kernels or incorrect initrd or any

though some problems is a lilo or grub problem, those are far and few
nowdayz

no system error messages will (correctly) tell you if the system can boot
after you ran lilo or grub or any other loader..
- you are just forced to (re)boot and see

CUPS remote printing problem

I have an HP PSC 2110 working locally with foomatic and CUPS back end.
When I try to print remotely the CUPS web interface returns with:

"Print file was not accepted (client-error-bad-request)!"

I find these entries in /var/log/cups/error_log:

E [01/Jul/2005:00:13:09 -0400] print_job: No file!?!
D [01/Jul/2005:00:13:09 -0400] send_ipp_error(0x403b7008[5], 400)
D [01/Jul/2005:00:13:09 -0400] Sending error: client-error-bad-request

I can print to another system with CUPS/IPP (non HP) printer on the
same network.  I tried to remotely print to the HP from a second system
and hit the same problem.

A google search indicates it might be an hpijs/gs interaction, so I
tried different versions of gs without success.  The solution in the
archived message was to switch drivers, but that was for a woody install.

Oh, God, I remember that.  I was working for [EMAIL PROTECTED] at the time, 
back in 2001.  Virginia had a fire in the building, everybody running 
air conditioners caused a blackout in Atlanta, and the poor guys at 
AT&T's internal call center in Slt. Ste. Marie, Ontario stuck in the 
same high pressure system as Atlanta were having to take everybody's 
calls (when they normally took calls from us at @Home or their own 
local call centers) and their air conditioners had crapped out in the 
record 100+ degree heat there.  I didn't even work for AT&T and I had 
to deal with the tech support collateral damage they caused (to reach 
us, you called your local carrier and hit whatever number for data 
service and ignored the voice prompt or find the right combination of 
buttons to hit to reach us.  You wouldn't believe how many people, 
after deliberately telling the phone system they're having problems 
with their internet service, couldn't understand that we had 
absolutely nothing to do with problems with their TV and we could do 
nothing to fix TV reception, and no, we're not your cable company, 
we're an internet provider.  Take a spin on the B Train and pester 
your local cable operator in person if you don't believe me...)

Meanwhile in the northwest, they were winning awards and pissing off 
Verizon and Qwest with their superior

Like in the Northwest.  Given that they're the only option for TV or 
internet for a good number of people here, their ads should say, 
"We're the cable company.  Sorry."  or "Hey, at least we're not Qwest 
or Verizon."  Qwest and Verizon suck so hard a good number of people 
I know, myself included, have decided the phone is obsolete and it's 
time to move on.  Now we get in touch by Jabber, CB radio and HAM 
radio instead.  I'd love to be able to pick up the phone and get a 
dialtone without having to resort to Vonage and dearly miss Pacific 
Northwest Bell.

Yeah, but AT&T had a deal with TiVo.  The digital-cable ready AT&TiVos 
are a now-scarce, charished item in this part of the world.  The 
Series 2 AT&TiVos moreso, since Comcast bought AT&T and stupidly 
ended the deal.

OK, I didn't originally realize that the error was in the database file.  
I thought it was an issue with the version of the library.  I deleted 
that entry from the file and sure enough, no more errors.

I considered it. However, another computer in my internal home network,
running Debian Sid, plays streams through xmms perfectly, this shows my
router (running Debian testing) is okay as far as the
router/masquarading firewall rules are concerned. I then thought about
the iptables rules I have on my desktop. I 'stopped' iptables on my
desktop so that all policies were ACCEPT(i.e. nothing being blocked by
my computer's firewall) and still xmms showed the same problem. So it
looks like firewall is not the issue here.

3d accel and agpgart

Greetings:

I'm tryiing to get 3d acceleration working on my IBM R40 laptop running Sarge 
(3.1). I'm attempting to follow the instructions at 
http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/DriTroubleshooting. 

It says to do "dmesg | grep drm" and if it displays nothing, then "compile 
agpgart into your kernel or load it as a module." I can load agpgart with 
"insmod agpgart" so I know that the module exists.

I tried adding Load: "agpgart" to /etc/X11/XF86config-4, but then when I do a 
dmesg | grep agpgart I get:

XFree86.0.log says:

(II) LoadModule: "agpgart"
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module agpgart
(II) UnloadModule: "agpgart"
(EE) Failed to load module "agpgart" (module does not exist, 0)

But if I do a insmod agpgart, it says that it already exists.

A little later in the instructions, it says that I need to load the agpgart 
module before the radeon module. XFree86's log indicates that indeed the 
radeon module loads later.

The instructions don't seem to address the above problems. Any ideas?

Any input is appreciated, My knowledge and experience is limited.

Hi Tim,
you realize having the latest vesion means it has little or no testing.
sid is the most changing software stream and the most likely to have
software problems because it is where software is being tested. If you
want something to 'just work' Sarge would be idea. While many people run
sid beacuse it is the 'cutting edge', it has risks that may cause apps
to stop working from time to time. It you (can/want to) handle this, ok. I
run sid on my workstation and I have no critical infrastrucure to
distrub. but if I was running a RDBS with an old unix distro, I'd want
stability, hence would choose to run 'stable'.

Hi Maurice,
first you need to have 'sid' or 'unstable' lines in your source list.
so copy a 'stable'/'testing' line and replace it with 'unstable'.
Next you need to run 'apt-get update' or 'aptitude update'...
then you can install a package from unstable.
BUT it depends on what you machine runs.
If you run stable, you will need to tell apt to get the
package from unstable and not from stable.
apt-get -t unstable install mutt
this will install mutt from unstable.
One warning: this can lead to many system problems, use it carefully and
wisely!

LILO bug?

Whenever I try to install lilo to an IDE drive other than the one
one which I booted, and the later drive is SCSI, I get the following
warning message from LILO:

Warning: /dev/hda is not on the first disk

(e.g., if the target partition is on /dev/hda)

LILO documentation explains this warning as follows:

  The specified partition is probably not on the first disk.
  LILO's boot sector can only be booted from the first disk
  unless some special boot manager is used.

The warning is useful and correct but there is no warning that
under these conditions, LILO gets erroneously installed on the
SCSI drive (i.e. the "first disk"), rendering that drive
unbootable.  Note that there is no warning that the lilo.conf
"boot=" parameter is about to be overridden, and futhermore this
seems like an error condition, not a warning condition, even if
LILO's behavior is for some reason regarded as consistent.

This is not motherboard nor BIOS dependent behavior.  I've seen
it on a wide variety of systems, and it's an old problem that
I've seen with serveral versions of LILO.

I've experimented with workarounds using disk= and bios= stanzas,
without success.  I know about the rescue floppy workaround
and grub, but I'm looking for a better solution and also I am
considering filing a bug report because even if there is a
combination of optional stanzas that "fix" the problem, the fact
that LILO gets installed on the wrong disk without any warning,
seems like a bug.

The OOM killer is responsible for killing processes when the system is
running out of virtual memory (so the system itself will "stay alive").

(In your case it hit the X server -- which might be considered

Moving Cyrus email from one folder to another

Hello all,
I am wondering if anyone out there has created a script that runs from
cron that will move email from one folder to another.  What I would like
to do is this:  I have publicly accessible folders that all imap users
use called isSpam and notSpam which I use with the sa-learn program to
learn about spam and ham emails.  What I want my script to do now is
once it reads the messages to move them to a folder underneath or
elsewhere called processed or something like that.  I could just move
the dot files into that folder but I think that will mess up the indexes
in Cyrus.

Lines with deb-src point to the source code for the packages, not to the
packages. You need them only if you want to build your own packages.
If you just want to install the packages from the debian mirror you have
to use "deb" instead of "deb-src".

Fakeraid vs softwareraid? (was Promise FastTrak100 on Sarge install?)

Wow. On woody it works _fine_.

So sarge is finally here to kick off my fakeraid card? (purchased as
"true" hardware raid) No very good news. At least I see that software
raid is on d-i. I did set some pure software raids on woody. I think it
will be a lot easier now. What do you think about fakeraid vs pure
software raid performance?.

Install the package(s) which contain(s) the missing files. You'll need

screen can do this sort of thing for textual apps.  For X, you might try 
(tight)VNC (which is in Debian in various packages), or FreeNX (which sounds 
much better, but is not in Debian yet, afaik).

Accessing a program started in another term

Lets say, I'm at work and I start a remote session for an interactive 
program, like octave.  Then I go home with and my remote terminal 
session and the octave program are still running at work.  Is there a 
way for me to take control of that terminal and interact with the 
running octave program?  I use octave as an example but I'm looking for 
solution (if it exists) that would be generally applicable.

I know this mailing list is much more made for technical purpose. 
However, this is the technic that is bethreated by software patents.

In think it's completely a part of opensource software. It's a very good

Liberty is not only about using opensource software. It's also about

This threat went bad. I never thought that what I like could be

Install the package(s) which contain(s) the missing files. You'll need
at least the 'libx11-dev' package. The "Search the contents of packages"
form at http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages#search_contents can help
you to identify which packages contain other files that you might need.

X11 includes and xplanet

Hello All:

I'm new to Debian and Linux in general but I have a functioning Sarge
machine at my office that I enjoy. One of my avocations is ham radio and,
specifically, satellites. I have been able to get Predict and gsat working
nicely. I have however run into problems getting xplanet to work. At the
point I run make, it errors out complaining that several X11 includes are
not found. I talked to the writer of the Predict software - he has a
separate program, earthtrack, that invokes xplanet with the satellites from
Predict. After going through my system a bit, he felt that several files
were missing from my X Windows setup. Please forgive me for a lack of
precision here since I am at home on my windoze laptop. 

I couldn't just apt-get xplanet, unfortunately. Is there a way to 'fix' my X
windows so that the appropriate includes are where they should be ? (I'm
guessing /usr/include/X11).

I can second this -- don't put / or /boot under LVM control, just /'s large 
subdirectories, like /usr, /var, /home, etc, but not /bin, /sbin, /lib, or 
other directories that contain important system recovery tools. For example, 
the LVM tools are in /sbin -- if you break your LVM tools or kernel LVM 
support somehow (I've done it), with / (and thus /sbin) on an LVM partition, 
you'll have quite a mess to deal with when you reboot.

I can think of two possibilities here. The first might be that
php4-mysql is not installed, and the second could be that the mysql api
in php is still a 3.x version. The default password hash in mysql 4.x
changed to a much longer and supposedly more secure key.

If mysql support is not installed, install the php4-mysql package. If it
is a version issue, change your password to use the old hashing type by
logging into the mysql console and setting it using the old_password
command:

Try adding ldap/@ to the keytab -- also make certain 
that slapd can read the keytab that contains everything relevant to it, to do 
this without compromising the main keytab you have to add an override 
in /etc/default/slapd , for example something like:

I'm guessing, mostly -- I have an LDAPS/Kerberos implementation working here, 
but it was a nightmare to set up. The most important things to check, I've 
found, are the FQDNs of all the systems involved -- both LDAP and Kerberos 
are very, very picky about them.

Every time after reboot my routing table is using my ppp0 P-t-P address 
instead of its inet address.

xmms doesn't play streams, complains couldn't connect to host

Hi,

I am trying to make xmms play streams from websites and cannot get mp3
streams to work. From this page:

I have tried Ogg streams on xmms and they work. The MP3 ones do not.
While trying to play an MP3 stream (.m3u file?), xmms reports "Couldn't
connect to host: :".

Any idea how to fix it?

Running Debian Testing on a PIV, 2.6.11-1-686 kernel.

I have written a more elegant script. I have attached it (sorry) to this 
message and can be saved in the directory /etc/ppp/ip-up.d


It uses a key (and password) together with the command ntpdc to change 
the configuration of the ntp daemon.


If you enter the command "ntpdc -n -p", you get in the first column the 
ip-address of the peer, and in the second column the local address. I 
have found out that after an initial startup, the local address is 
filled with the address of your interface. If the address of the 
interface is changed (after a reconnect), ntp can't send the data from 
the old socket (with the old local address).


I have seen that peers added dynamicly by ntpdc have a local address of 
0.0.0.0 which is any-address. They keep on working after that the local 
address of the interface has changed.


My script skips local clocks (127.127.?.?) and dynamicly added peers 
(0.0.0.0). Alle other peers are removed (unconfig) and added (addserver) 
again. At the end are some public available peers added, so that I 
always have at least 4 peers.

put scripts in /etc/ppp/ip-[up|down].d/ to stop 
and start ntpd when pppd reconnects.

Fudforum and eGroupware.

Hi all,
I was playing around with Fudforum and added some entrys and then decided to
"reset" the app to get rid of test enterys by (probebly stupidly)
uninstalling Fudforum and reinstalling it via the eGroupware setup. And now
it's broken. When loged in as admin I click on the Fudforum all I get is a
blank page, no left menu or top menu icons at all? When I try to go to
Administration and click on Fudforum site configuration I get the same
result, a blank page?

Can someone help me with this?

I think you need to set (in /etc/apt/apt.conf)

Acquire::http::Proxy  http://user:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:8080

(leave out the user:pass@ part, if you don't need to login)

The manpage apt.conf(5) also states it would honour the setting of the
general environment variable "http_proxy" -- which is also used by
other tools, such as wget.

Similar options exist for FTP, in case you should need those, too.

Have you tried just removing the offending line? Or removing the whole section
related to libstring-approx-perl (it doesn't really look like a critical
package anyway)?

I guess dpkg will just re-add it during the next `apt-get update' run, but
hopefully the real problem is fixed at that time. Upgrading dpkg and apt-get is
probably also needed.

monitor I wrote the following in the Google: 
Philips 104B monitor technical specs. This provide to me some of the

Also, I don't know if this is a factor or not, but most of the channels I want
to record are digital cable (that includes BBC America, Sci-Fi and manyothers).  I don't know if Myth TV or any other homebrew system handles
digital cable signals.
Many HDTV capable tuners can also handle digital cable.  The
problem is that many if not most digital cable channels are encrypted
so even if you can tune them it doesn't do you any good.

Definitely ifupdown -- that's The Debian Way of networking. Install
the 'ifupdown' package, read 'man 5 interfaces', and set up
/etc/network/interfaces.

There are two disagreements I'm aware of. First of all, Debian thinks
works released under the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) are
non-free, while RMS thinks they are free or the freedoms they lack
don't matter (I forgot which one). Secondly, Debian distributes both
free software and proprietary software (the 'non-free' section) in the
same way. Debian doesn't consider this to be a problem, RMS does.

Interesting.  We have had the same cable company in Richmond, VA since the 
1980s (maybe even the late 1970s), but it's been bought, merged, etc.  At one 
point it was Time Warner, MediaOne, and others I can't remember.  I've had 
cable since around 1990 or so.  During that time, AT&T bought out MediaOne 
and provided the absolute worst service I've ever seen.  The local call 
center was shut down and calls were routed to Atlanta, which was shut down, 
and all calls were sent to Newfoundland or Toronto.  It could take 90 mins to 
3 hrs to get help.  AT&T was absolutely terrible and I know in some other 
cities they came damn close to losing their charter to operate.

After AT&T, Comcast took over and made a number of changes, including 
re-opening the local call center.  I've heard many people complain about 
them, but after AT&T, any company would have been wonderful.  In our area, 
though, Comcast has been outstanding (again, I'm aware that for many people 
that has not been the case).  It seems I got lucky.  While the interface 
could be nicer looking, it is not really slow, and using their DVR has been 
one of the easiest experiences I've ever had in using any recording device.

It's a damn shame all customers aren't treated that way.  I think if they all 
got the kind of service I've seen, they'd have a very different reputation.

In this area Sci-Fi was always a premium channel, but it's been on digital for 
several years now -- at least in our area.

I've also heard, in case it is of interest, from a Comcast employee in an 
answer center that they've made a deal with TiVo and in June of 2006, they'll 
replace their DVR service with TiVo.

As for me, it'll be around then or a little later that I'd finally have time 
to build a MythTV box.  As I said, though, I don't know if MythTV can read 
the signals for the digital channels.

Without the scan frequencies, videogen probably can 
not work.

This morning I made a boot diskette for Aos
(see http://bluebottle.ethz.ch/ ).  The Aos boot 
manager lists all available VESA modes.
24 bit color is not allowed for any resolution. 
1024x768x16 is available and 800x600x32 is available.

So I edited XF86Config-4 to provide only the 800x600
resolutions and only at 16 and 32 bit color.  Now the 
display is good!

This arrangement appears unsatisfactory in the sense 
that configurations for the X server and for the X 
client should be distinct.  The server should be able 
to offer configurations which do not work for a 
specific client.  Conversely, there should be a 
configuration file or command pararmeters to specify 
the preferred resolution, color depth and scan rate 
for a particular client device.  I have yet to find 
how X client parameters are specified.

This reminds me of the problems I had setting up a server recently which
had the dreaded Promise FastTrak100 interface on the motherboard.  After
several days of enabling it and RAID, disabling RAID and various other
possibilities, I disabled it and plugged the two raid disks into the on
board IDE controller (yes I know, you shouldn't put more than on device
on each cable) and every thing worked fine.  Incidentally the operating
system is on a separate disk, the raid array is only for /home.

There was an OOM Killer - related bug in 2.6.10, I also faced it some time
ago. Now running 2.6.11 with uptime about 40 days and high load, no
problems.

So you should probably upgrade your kernel.

No, you should file a bug against findutils!

It seems that 'find' compares the hard link count of directories with
the number of subdirectories, and prints the above warning if they don't
match.

However, a mismatch does *not* necessarily indicate a "bug in the
filesystem driver." It can also occur if directories are created or
deleted between the time the hard link count is obtained and the time
the number of subdirectories is obtained.

Kernel 2.6.8 & Keyboard Mapping on an Ultra 5

Hi folks.  Successfully installed the 2.6.8 kernel on my Sun Ultra 5.  
However, when I go to boot with the new kernel the keyboard mapping is ALL 
WRONG on my Sun Type 5 keyboard -- the letter keys either type numbers or do 
not type at all and the number keys when Num Lock is is type letters.  
However, if I boot into the default 2.4.x kernel that ships with Debian, I 
have no problems.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can get this 
problem corrected?

I think that's wrong. You're appending a rule to the SPOOF table which
specifies that all packets from eth1 are to be jumped to the SPOOF
chain.. that's an infinite loop.

However in that fragment you don't specify any way of getting into the
SPOOF table so nothing will happen.

Default policy for INPUT,FORWARD and OUTPUT are ACCEPT, so the four
rules above result in nothing.

Hi,
An elegant (I think) way of solving this is to 
put scripts in /etc/ppp/ip-[up|down].d/ to stop 
and start ntpd when pppd reconnects.

My /etc/ppp/ip-down.d/ntp-server simply says,

[ -x /usr/sbin/ntpd ] || exit 0

echo "Stopping NTP server"
/etc/init.d/ntp-server stop
-

and my /etc/ppp/ip-up.d/ntp-server,

-
#!/bin/sh

[ -x /usr/sbin/ntpd ] || exit 0

echo "Starting NTP server"
/etc/init.d/ntp-server start
-

Just make sure these scrips are executable (755).

Help with broken Aptitude

Hello everyone.

I have a Debian Sarge box that was working fine until Sarge went stable.
Aptitude has started acting very strange,  in fact apt in general
seems broken.  The symptoms are as follows.

1.  I have had no upgrades when when I run "aptitude update, aptitude
upgrade" since sarge went stable.

2.  When trying to install a package from the command line using
aptitude install  I get a "No installation cantidate" error.
example:

violator:~# aptitude search apt-file

Building Dependency Tree

Do you use acrobat 7 or 5? I had similar problems with acrobat 5 but
with version 7 the problem dissapeared.

boot incomplete. Due to /usr on lvm2?

Hi. 

I'd be very grateful of some help here. Done lots of googling etc... 

My old HD is failing (IBM "DeathStar") so I've bought a new one. It's SATA. 
I wanted to use lvm2 to make resizing easier. I read about it, and found 
that having / on lvm2 made it harder to get it to boot. I found this post on 
this list:

which recommended using lvm2 for only /usr /tmp /home /opt /var. I thought 
that's be great-they're the ones that vary in size, and it'll boot. However 
it won't-it doesn't launch X, but does give a text log-in. I suspect it's 
because /usr is on lvm and not available as the machine boots. So, do I need 
to use the lvm-mkinitrd script I wanted to avoid?-Even though / itself isn't 
on lvm. What possible pitfalls would there be with that? Would you recommend 
not having /usr on lvm? If so, I may abandon lvm altogether, getting fed-up 
with it. I don't think the problem is with the drive being SATA, the PC gets 
to the console booting from it. I'm using testing, 2.6.11-1-k7 kernel and 
wanted to try out xfs, although I found some posts about file-system 
corruption with it and 2.6 series kernels, so may revert to ext3. I have 
/boot on a seperate partition. /etc/fstab has entries for the lvm lv's. I'm 
not sure how to get more boot diagnostics for this problem, I'm using RIP 
bootable recovery CD to work on the lvm partitions, and knoppix to send 
this... 

I'll post more info if you need it.

LDAP with Kerberos authentification

Hi there
 I have a problem with slapd using Kerberos V (GSSAPI) authentification
on Debian 3.1 Sarge. The Kerberos configuration seems to be ok since
cyrus imap daemon uses it without any problems. 

I also added the appropriate principals to my Kerberos database and to
the krb5.keytab file:

 ldap/[EMAIL PROTECTED]
 ldap/[EMAIL PROTECTED]

After getting my TGT with 

 > kinit admin

I tried a simple

 > ldapwhoami -h hubbard.hlphys.uni-linz.ac.at

and got the following error message

SASL/GSSAPI authentication started
ldap_sasl_interactive_bind_s: Internal (implementation specific) error (80)
additional info: SASL(-1): generic failure: GSSAPI Error: Miscellaneous 
failure (No principal in keytab matches desired name)

I got a similar error with cyrus imapd before I changed the "servername" 
variable in imapd.conf to the 
hostname. 
Has anyone an idea what I'm doing wrong?

This is likely not the case, but...  Some older versions of acroread did 
not respond to shortcuts if you had "Num Lock" on.  But since you are 
using on a laptop, I doubt it is the case.  Just in case...
