Guarddog Wont Allow Access To Browzer And Email

2005-08-05 Thread Debian User Leonard Chatagnier

Just finished configuring Guarddog firewall using the "Using Guarddog"
Basic Configuation Tutorial in the KDE help files. The tutorial seemed
fairly easy to use and understand so, I'm a little surprised that I was
blocked from accessing the internet. However, I'm new to Linux and have
only used free Zone Alarm under Windows 98SE which was simple to setup.
I was able to connect to my ISP using KPPP but couldn't use the browser
or email client. Got an error message to the effect that the URL was
not found, please check that the name is correct... .
I also set up a DMZ zone as suggested in the tutorial and suspect this
may be causing the problem. My zone configuration looks like this:

Local-> DMZ
DMZ->Local
DMZ->Internet
Internet-> DMZ

And, of course, I tagged the all the email protocols and TPC, UDC
protocols. Would appreciate any clues/suggestions on how to fix the
firewall. Will supply any needed info when requested. Please copy my
email address as I'm not subscribed.
Thanks for your consideration,

Leonard Chatagnier

Additional Info:
Using Debian stock kernel v.2.6.8-2-686, no lan, connecting to internet
with 56K modem, iptables installed, DMZ zone contains the local host
address of 127.0.0.1/8(don't know if this is correct but it's all I
could come up with as my IP address is dynamic)
Also added my ISP and my dynamic local addresses to the DMZ zone while
on-line and was still blocked.

I had exactly this problem. Here is what I did to solve it.

Firstly, edit your /etc/network/interfaces file to have the following lines:

auto dsl-provider
iface dsl-provider inet ppp
 provider dsl-provider
#please do not modify the following line
 pre-up /sbin/ifconfig eth0 up #line maintained by pppoeconf

(although, mine looks like this:

# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto dsl-provider
iface dsl-provider inet ppp
 provider dsl-provider
#please do not modify the following line
 pre-up /sbin/ifconfig eth0 up #line maintained by pppoeconf

I add this purely for completion: Perhaps you wish a loopback for
CUPS, et cetera. As you like it.)

Next, go to /etc/ppp and delete both ppp_on_boot and ppp_on_boot.dsl.
You probably will have these. Then, reboot.

Doing those two things should solve your problem. To make sure, try
ifconfig. You should see only eth0 and ppp0 (and possibly the lo bit).

If this does not work, try to look about in /etc/ppp and /etc/network
for any thing that looks remotely connected to your situation. And, of
course, E-Mail the thread.

what does 'eject -v /dev/cdrom' say (or other permutations of devices
you can try)? It may include some clue. fwiw I could nto eject a cdrom
earlier tonight - silly me, konqueror had a window on the cdrom open.
Yet fuser did not list any processes using the device - I find that odd.

For one, 'eject -v' will tell you if the device is currently mounted.
And do you have any abominations :) such as supermount enabled over

You can hear in the tone of their voice that the folks on Oregon

Well, you could install it to a partition on your HD, then you'd be
able to apt-get nearly any package in the debian repository, or even do
(gasp) a dist-upgrade to go "pure" debian. I used mepis, but didn't
initially go whole-hog into debian; rather upgraded it piecemeal,
adding extra stuff every now and then.

There should be a way to store stuff on your HD without having to
install it - I haven't tried it myself -- sure enough if you have an
existing partition setup you can mount those partitions underneath
knoppix's fs, then it would just write the stuff to the hard drive
instead of "nowhere" :).

> settings after I shut my computer off. Also what program can I use to

USB is a good intermediate step especially if you don't (yet) want to
go wiping out your existing HD and stuff :).

knoppix dvd probably has everything :) but my personal favorite for
news reading is pan. It's overall good - especially when handling large
multipart postings, but can be rather consumptive of memory.

google groups in and of itself isn't a bad way to read news - I for one
prefer a more "traditional" way of reading news, but google groups
could have some decided advantages - expecially if you're just
searching for subject matter, and (theoretically at least) you're not
at the mercy of the vagaries of your ISPs news feed (thank g-d my isp
has a direct supernews feed) :).

Well, two things.

1: This is a Debian *user* forum. Generally topics of interest to Debian
users, whether they're related to Debian or not, are often held as fair game
for this mailing list. I've certainly not seen that statement refuted in the
years I've been reading it. ;)

2: Given that there's 115 references to OOo in Debian, one could make a strong
case that we're discussing Debian here. I mean we discuss Exim, Apache, KDE
and Gnome often enough and all of those have the same status as OOo. IE, all
the above are large projects which are packaged into the gigantic project we
collective know as Debian. :D

Dunno. I'm new at this myself. It's possible you have a dud dvd every
once in a while - depending on the media you get. It happens to me from
time to time writing CDs - for the cheaper media you might end up with
5-10 coasters per 100 or so. But the price is probably worth it - as
the saying goes, you get what you pay for. :)

What I'd recommend for starters is first see if using the growisofs
command from the command line (i.e., without K3B as a front end)
improves your situation any. For me, k3b just doesn't do a good job -
for some reason (independent of distro it seems) it usually just
crashes on startup or (when I used it a long while ago) would abort
right in the middle of burning a CD. I've never tried it on DVDs.

I can probably see one advantage to using a frontend GUI, and that's
when using drag/drop on a bunch of files - especially if they have some
directory structure. For the life of me, getting the directories and
files on the CD to match the layout on the HD is difficult, especially
when using graft points (for instance, I had a number of mp3s in 11
different directories (dir01 dir02 dir03 dir 11) once, and getting
it to the CD with mkisofs sure was a hassle - as I had to put in grafts
for each and every directory on the command line. I wonder how people
master CDs :).

To some extent, this applies to DVDs as well, although for movies there
are lots fewer files typically, but for data DVDs the problem may just
be as difficult if not more so.

Sorry for venting... :)

> /usr/bin/growisofs -Z /dev/scd0=/home/cdrom/2.5.men.iso
> -use-the-force-luke=notray -use-the-force-luke=tty -speed=4

One other point -- these extra options don't seem to be documented in
the man page, and I at the moment haven't run across any detailed
description of what they're for -- or even if they're needed anymore.

Also, try a lower speed - it might make a difference.

M$ has clearly been suffering revenue pressure. That's why they had
Level 6 licensing. Besides desktop -- which was hended to them by
hapless John Akers at IBM --- they haven't done much in terms of
market penetration. Linux is putting a lot of pressure on the server
side, and palm, symbian, linux and Java are rule the gadget market. So
basically, they have to milk the desktop cow as much as they can.

Your question, is OO putting pressure. Maybe, I am not sure. I
personally know very few people (1 in 20 at the most) who use
Microsoft Office on their home computer. Most of them (15 out of 20)
use OO. But when it comes to work, most people use M$ products. So
it's hard to say.

This is a Debian forum. Not sure how much people would appreciate discussing OO.

/dev is mounted as a tmpfs filesystem with "transient" inodes. With older
versions of udev, I think the original /dev directory was moved
to /.dev,and so it still used some inodes on /. With udev 0.65, /.dev is
gone and I don't know if it's just moved.

That's a good indication that it should (or could) work the same on Linux.
The fact you didn't need a driver CD may be evidence that Windows XP relies
on a built-in database to identify USB mass-storage drive types. My
experience with XP is limited; the first time I attached an Apple iPod to
an XP system, it wanted a driver.

With Opera (I only use it as a last resort and for testing my own pages
as it tends to render a little more like IE than KHTML or Gecko) you
can reduce the advertisement to a regular sized toolbar by doing the
following:

View | Toolbars and uncheck the main bar. You might want to move the
navigation icons to another toolbar first though. Once that is done the
advertisement is just a bunch of Google text ads and isn't all that
annoying.

a debian windoze operation

2005-08-05 Thread stephen Turner
ok ive seen coLinux which supposedly is a full linux
os working with windows (not duel boot but linux in
windows) colinux didnt want to work for me atleast or
i did not know how to install right either case.

what im looking for is a linux like colinux or other
that will allow me to work on native linux code and
run native apps for my own linux/debian systems. i
wish to do this on/in windows without a reformat or
such. anyone know a good linux for such a job? some
that run in win say they cannot run native code so im
weary of which one i may need.

Instead of a big loop, try this:

echo `grep -l SPAM *` ../spam
^echo^mv^

Yeah, I like to see what will go on before I do it...

I have not tried this, but from the description, usbmount might fit the
bill. It is supposed to be independent of desktops, so it should work
well. If anyone has tried it, will be nice to get some feedback.

Description: automatically mount and unmount USB mass storage devices
This package automatically mounts USB mass storage devices (typically
USB pens) when they are plugged in, and unmounts them when they are
removed. The mountpoints (/media/usb[0-7] by default), filesystem types
to consider, and mount options are configurable. When multiple devices
are plugged in, the first available mountpoint is automatically
selected. If the device provides a model name, a symbolic link
/var/run/usbmount/MODELNAME pointing to the mountpoint is automatically
 created.
 .
The script that does the (un)mounting is called by the udev daemon.
Therefore, USBmount requires a 2.6 (or newer) kernel.
 .
USBmount is intended as a lightweight solution which is independent of
a desktop environment. Users which would like an icon to appear when an
USB device is plugged in should use the pmount and hal packages
 instead.
 .
 Homepage: http://usbmount.alioth.debian.org/

What I would like to know is its interaction with hal and
gnome-volume-manager?

I have the GF4MX too adn it's working fine.
If you want to use driver from nvidia, make sure you read the doc.
You can extract the binary file by executing ./nvidia-file --extract-only.
Make sure you have kernel-source, headers installed.
Go to the extracted directory and execute ./nvidia-installer
If the installer ask you wheter you want to download from the net, answer
'No'.
Change your X config file refer to the doc.

Those disabled goodies in mplayer

2005-08-05 Thread Tong
Hi,

I guess most of people is like me, seeing these messages over and over but
never pay attention:

MMX2 supported but disabled
SSE supported but disabled
SSE2 supported but disabled
3DNow supported but disabled
3DNowExt supported but disabled

This is what my mplayer outputs when it start decoding. I'm wondering how
to enable them so my decoding would be faster (I'm decoding from file to
file)

I searched the google, and seems no discussion on this either. Moreover,
they seems to be compile time options. I.e., they are disabled at compile
time, is that so?

Beside, which one (or ones) should I enable for my AMD Athlon, if I could?

Please comment. Thanks

upgrading to X.org server

2005-08-05 Thread Jim McCloskey

Not so long ago, I upgraded to the X.org 6.8.2 packages in
unstable. The upgrade was very smooth and easy, and produced a working
configuration right away (creating /etc/X11/xorg.conf from the old
XF86Config-4 file). It looks like the X Strike Force has done a really
great job.

However, there were a couple of small adjustments that I had to make
by hand that I thought would be worth reporting here, in case others
have had similar issues.

1. I initially lost access to my TrueType fonts. This turned out to be
because X.org no longer uses the xtt module (its functionality
included instead in the freetype module). So when I commented out:

  #Load"xtt"

from the Modules section and instead:

   Load"freetype"

   the problem was solved.

2. The X.org server no longer supports the speedo module or the
associated fonts, so I was getting warning messages until I
commented out the relevant lines in the Fonts section and in the
   Modules section. Very minor.

3. Most serious problem:

(EE) Couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB keymap

The most visible symptom here was that I could no longer use
Ctl-Alt-Fn to get back to the n-th virtual console from a running X
session. The solution in this case was to make a link from:

 /etc/X11/xkb/rules/xfree86 to /etc/X11/xkb/rules/xorg

   and also from:

 /etc/X11/xkb/rules/xfree86.lst to /etc/X11/xkb/rules/xorg.1st.

It's better to use -q. That way grep can terminate right away when it
finds the first match.

IIRC, X 4.x uses XF86Config-4 first, and if it can't find
it uses XF86Config.

What version of X do you have?

I've had pretty good luck on newish chipsets and lcd
displays by ...

1. have only one of XF86Config-4 and XF86Config (I use -4)

2. comment out the Modes line in XF86Config-4 and add one
that has *only* the native res.

3. Upgrade X to the one from testing or unstable (i.e. one
that's likely to recognize and understand the ideosyncracies
of more chipsets)

#1 might fix it, or you may have to go to #2 or #3. If #3
doesn't work, try a Modes line that has one of the more
conventional resolutions (example: my Dell has a native rez
of 1920x1200 but I had to run it at 1600x1200 [black on
sides] till I got the special nvidia module).

Re: Can't get more than 1024x768 even with the on-board card properly detected (XFree86+KDE 3.3)

2005-08-05 Thread Grant Thomas
I have an HP tablet pc to work on, so I couldn't test with your
resolution, as mine
only scales to 1024x768. This is what I did, and it could help you.

when you start your X session, by default a log file is created at
/var/log/XFree86.0.log
type mv /var/log/XFree86.0.log /var/log/XFree86.0.log.old
this will just rename the logfile, so we can start a new one fresh.
then
type startx
open /var/log/XFree86.0.log in your favorite text editor.

Scroll until you see a line that looks like this (or something similar):

(II) Setting vga for screen0
this is the section where it probes your monitor for valid resolutions.
I took the modes lines out of my XF86Config-4 file, and this is where
it get interesting. X will probe a bunch of different screen settings
to find one that will work. In my case many of the default resolutions
do not work.

Scroll down and see if you find something similar to this.

(**) DRIVERNAME(0): Validated modes for display device DEVICENAME:

if this exists, the lines immediately after this will show the
resolution X believes are good. Then, just below this, would be
something similar:
(**) DRIVERNAME(0): Default mode "INSERT RESOLUTION": Scan freq. .

This will list all of the modes X deems as compatible with your current setup.

If your modes line contains an incompatible resolution, it will also
state this. above the (**) line.

(WW) DRIVERNAME(0): Not using mode "INSERT RESOLUTION" ("INSERT REASON")

If your log file states that your custom mode is incompatible, it will
take someone with more knowledge than I to help you.
I am actually new to Linux, and don't know nearly as much as I would like.

anyway, if this doesn't work post the contents of your entire
XF86Config-4 file, as well as the entire /var/log/XFree86.0.log file.

Until next time...

Oh yeah, I guess this may not be obvious to everyone who might read this
mail... you have to change that "echo $n" to "mv $n ../wherever" once you
confirm that the loop isn't broken.

When I'm doing shell loops, I always prototype them with "echo", because
it can be easy to make a big mess in a hurry.

Try something like this:
for n in *; do
grep SPAM $n >/dev/null && echo $n
done

The "n" after that first "for" means "take the list and repeatedly run the
loop, with a member of the list assigned to the variable 'n'".

The other weirdish piece is the ">/dev/null", which is just so that it
doesn't output anything even if it does match (which you expect to happen.

Then it uses the shell exit codes semantics to do the thing on the right of
the "&&" only if the exit code of the program on the left returns an exit
code (see: "echo $?" after running any command) of 0. In the case of grep,
it returns 0/true if it does match.

> I am guessing that I need to create an array by doing something with ls,
> however I am having trouble puzzling this one out.

Globs sort of make their own arrays - there are different places in the
shell where this array has meaning, one of them being the "for" command.

> This job would then run out of cron.

It obeys the "only output on failure" semantics, as far as I can think of,
so it'd fit right in (you'd do well to just put it in a /usr/local/bin
script or something and call it that way - rather than mashing it onto one
line for cron).

script copy files based upon content

2005-08-05 Thread Michael Martinell

I am trying to figure out how to come up with a shell script that will cat
or grep a file and if it contains the word SPAM it will then move it to
another folder.

I have been trying combinations of grep SPAM * | mv * ../spam however I
don't know what to put in for * since the filenames are always changing.

I am guessing that I need to create an array by doing something with ls,
however I am having trouble puzzling this one out.

This job would then run out of cron.

Help is greatly appreciated.

apt-get: Command not found.

2005-08-05 Thread James A. Donald
apt-get: Command not found.

I am a newbie to linux. I recently installed Debian on a computer
that sits in a closet

So I ssh in. I got Samba working fine, after tinkering with the
/etc/samba/smb.conf file to read:

[global]
workgroup = workgroup
netbios name = linux
security = share
[shareRW]
path =  /home/james/Documents/sharedRW
read only = No
guest ok = Yes

and manually starting the daemons with
nmbd -D
smbd -D

All was well

But then I wanted it to automatically start the daemons on reboot, and
I had no idea how to do that.

So I said to myself, "well, surely Debian knows how to do that", so
attempted to type

apt-get update
apt-get install samba smbclient

Only to get the surprising message: apt-get: Command not found.

I conjecture that apt-get has been replaced with some cool gui based
configuration tool.

I recollect that when I access the computer with keyboard and monitor,
(which requires me to haul the computer out of the cupboard) I get
some stuff about updates, but when I access the KDE gui through vnc
and vncserver, I get a rather sparse screen that does not have that
update stuff on it.

I suppose there is some command I can give in the KDE gui that will
bring up some tool for updating and configuring debian?

my .vnc/xstartup file is
 unset SESSION_MANAGER
 exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
[ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup
[ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
vncconfig -iconic &
xterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
startkde &

Maybe there is something I can add to that file so my startup screen
is a bit more helpful?

Of failing that, maybe I should know how to startup daemons in linux
on bootup?

I assure you, apt-get is *not* on the path.

Pardon, me, problem is glaringly obvious. I have Suse installed, and

How did you install Debian in the first place? By CD? If so, the 2.6
kernels are on the CDs as well.

two ppp interfaces brought up at startup?

2005-08-05 Thread Leszek Koltunski

Hello Debian gurus,

My problem is that at startup, 2 ppp interfaces are brought up : ppp0
and ppp1. ( I've got a DSL line here ) Every time I boot the system
(it's a laptop so I pretty much have to switch it off/on everyday ) I
gotta su to root and 'ifconfig ppp1 down' to get networking to work.
As you might imagine, this is quite frustrating.

I've set up by DSL connection with 'pppoeconf' and for a while, everything
was fine. I then however run pppoeconf the second time and it must have
written somewhere in its configuration files to create another ppp
interface . I cannot figure out where!

Can anybody point me at some good pppoe tutorials and pppoeconf info so I
can resolve this?

Please CC me in your answers as I am not subscribed to the list.

Does anybody know if there is such thing as a portable OGG player?

There is been a core design for an Ogg player available for a while:

http://www.finearch.com/english/news/pr_20030715/pr_20030715.htm

http://www.finearch.com/english/ will take you to more info.

They are selling the basic technology for Ogg players, but I don't see
news of it actually being adopted in products yet.

A while back I came across Free firmware for the iPod that allows it to
play oggs. I don't know if this works alongside the normal iPod
firmware or just totally replaces it.

udeb is a transliteration of micro-deb (since u is the closest Roman
letter to the Greek mu). They are debs that are used in places like the
installer and do not necessarily meet all the policy requirements that a
normal deb would. Generally you will never need to mess with them
unless you are making/customizing a Debian installer.

Thanks for puting me in the picture to all respondends.
It seems that .udeb's should rather be left alone.

If you want to find out more about Debian, you should definitely take
a look at Debian Reference, you can read about udeb and much more!

True, this may not be obvious at first to an average user. I also agree
that most Windows users do not "safely remove" the USB device by right
clicking on the devic's icon in the system tray (lower right corner of
the scree) and choosing "Remove device safely". Most just yank it out
(not recommended at all). Most are lucky because I guess the way those
devices are mounted is that data transfer is done right away on any
operation (instead of flushing data at some suitable time later). So
chances are you will be okay most of the times, but you can loose data
if you are unlucky.

Now, I believe an Windows average user does not read documentation that
comes either with the OS or with the USB device. This ignorance is quite
pronounced in Windows world where reading documentation by an average
user is more or less unheard of ;) In Linux it is of course different.
I can estimate that almost all Linux users with at least a few months's
experience realize they they should read at least some kind of
documentation. So this unmounting of devices prior to their
disconnection is sort of an alien concept in Windows world (for average
user) and quite familiar with Linux users.

In Linux, I guess the default options of mounting USB device are to
flush data with each write or read so data transfer is not deferred till
later (at least I set it up like that when I made rules for USB disks or
CF cards). So yanking out should work just as well as it should in
Windows (or better). However, the proper method is to umount the device
first and then remove it (or "Remove device safely" in Windows).

Hmm ... If something like this comes along in IceWM, it would be really
great. I have an old computer setup as a router in my home. I am running
IceWM on it and have to manually mount stuff like this the odd times I
have needed to.

Hi, guys. I just have a quick question.

I burnt the DVD and netinstall version of debian. I put it in the dvd
rom in my laptop, and then pressed enter to boot.

After a short loading of kernels..etc for like 2 sec. my screen goes
blank, and both the harddrive and dvd rom stop functioning/responding.

So, do you guys have any idea of what's going on?

Well, I'm also running boinc/einstein here on this box & I thought it
might be usefull to set it up on the debian box too.

And, TBT, I was trolling a bit as I don't have seperate startups for
them now. In fact, I got so sick of boinc taking over the machine &
the boinc folks couldn't seem to understand the problem I was having.
They weren't giving the clients a -nice 19, so my boinc starter file
found its way into vim & that got fixed right fast after I figured it
out what was hogging the machine so bad.

Thanks Bob. By the time you hear from that machine, it will be moved
back out to the shop and hooked up to a micro-mill. I just a few

trash

2005-08-05 Thread j j
Hi
My desktop is xfce4 but I like to use konqueror as my main file
manager. When I delete a file in konqueror, the files are actually
moved to trash:/ Now I am not using kde as a desktop, so I find it
difficult to empty the trash can.
can I empty trash can from a terminal? Can I use xffm to delete kde
trash:/ ? Which directory is trash:/ stored in? xftrash4 seems to be
a different trash can.
thanks

But, what did I do that an average computer user doesn't do? There was
no prompt telling me to safely remove it, so I yanked it. Actually, I
received this computer as part of a training course and I'm trying to
drop my expertise level so I can see what happens and learn from there.

Good! I'm glad to see things are coming along. I don't regularly use
either of the DEs and just use IceWM, so I haven't seen this
progression first hand.

Yes, I've seen it in KDE 3.4 on KNOPPIX 3.9, I believe. In fact, the

Re: how to mount an image file ( .img ) in a loopback - mount -o loop ?

2005-08-05 Thread gothicdoom

Hi tripolar.

I didn't read your first mail, but I'm assuming you used 'dd' to bkp the
fs, is that it?

So far I can see, you can't mount it because the bkp is corrupted. I
found this same error on a similar case, where the fs was XFS.

Any help would be appreciated

First you could create a mount point, for example:

# mkdir /media/images

or you could use too /media/floppy or /media/cdrom, but it is better
to have different mountpoints. Next:

# mount -o ro,loop,nodev,noexec,noatime /path/to/file.img /media/images

You could use other options with -o, check the man of mount : )

I posted a detailed message on Saturday about my problem. I will repost

grep -l enlargement /var/spool/mail/* | wc -l

see man grep and man wc for more info. also remember read permissions
and whether /var/spool/mail/* recurses into subdirs or not

udeb is a transliteration of micro-deb (since u is the closest Roman
letter to the Greek mu). They are debs that are used in places like the
installer and do not necessarily meet all the policy requirements that a
normal deb would. Generally you will never need to mess with them
unless you are making/customizing a Debian installer.

You are not supposed to yant it like that, neither in Windows not in
Linux. In Windows, you "Safely Remove" a USB device and in Linux you
umount that device prior to removing.

> Right now I have some custom Hotplug scripts for my Jump Drive and my
> camera. They are a kludge, but they get the job done.

I tried reading about Udev rules and was able to make devices for my
digital camera and my USB card reader (this was a few months ago when
auto-detection wasn't working so well in Unstable). I ended up with
rules something like:
IF DETECTED: my digicam: THEN MAKE DEV /dev/my-digicam

And I had a mount point in /media called say "canon" which mounted
"/dev/my-digicam". I could mount this by clicking on "canon" icon in
"Computer" folder of Gnome desktop. At that time, this was the closes I
could get to ease of use for Windows (I was setting up my wife's laptop
with all this, and wanted it to be as seamless as it was in Windows for
her).

Having described all this, I now realize that if you are using gnome and
you have udev, hal and gnome-volume-manager, you don't need to do all
this stuff. If I plug in a 256MB USB stick, I get an icon on my desktop
with an appropriate name, all automatically. When I umount it (right
clicking on the icon on desktop), the icon dissappears and the device is
unmounted, again all automatically. I asked my wife to try this. She
found it no different than in Windows in terms of ease of use. And
regarding digital cameras, they are also auto-detected using digikam or
gtkam with libgphoto2.

So in the end, I know that udev rule making is tedious, but it works.
But I am also not sure how to make general rules for USB sticks separate
from floppies -- but I can't say I have looked much. In any case, at
least in Gnome, one does't really need to make any rules anymore. And I
guess the upcoming KDE will also have this
auto-detect-auto-mount-auto-unmount feature.

When you think your modem made a correct connection, try to ping

If this works correct, try the dns-server your router provides.
Somewhere on the status page, there must be a dns provided by your

Once this is working, try to query the dnsserver of your provider using
dig or host like `host www.scarlet.be 193.74.208.137`
If you get correct answers, you can finish testing `host www.debian.org`
which should return the ip of www.debian.org querying the nameservers
provided by your /etc/resolv.conf

Hope it helps,

Hi Wim
Yes, basic network functionality is all fine - I am using theis machine for
several months now. DNS is fine under most circumstances, can ping most
histnames - it is just applications like ftp, telnet, ssh that don't seem to
able to make DNS.

Thanks for the help

Hi,

As far as I know, if ping & nslookup works, everything should work fine.
They normally use all the same libraries for resolving.

I think something else like a firewall is blocking your networkactivity.

Yeah I understand that part, but there is a command
wvdialconf that generates a new wvdial.conf file if
you run it it will configure your modem.
Then run as root
#wvdialconf

also see manual page for the command.

Do you want to configure the machine for a text login? (And then run
startx or xinit or whatever to start X on demand.) If you are never
going to log in with X then:

  apt-get remove gdm kdm xdm

If you are asking how you can do this for a single login session then
I use cntrl-alt-F1 to switch to a text console. There are several
virtual consoles configured by default. I often use the text consoles
for various reasons. Alternatively the graphical login managers also
have a button to login on the text console.

If you really want the graphical login to be runlevel dependent then
simply configure the system to be runlevel dependent. You can do this
either of two ways. Use one of the management programs sysvconfig,
rcconf, or sysv-rc-conf mentioned previously. Or just move the
symlink yourself manually. Your manual changes will be recognized and
preserved by update-rc.d on future package upgrades.

  cd /etc/rc3.d
  mv S99kdm K99kdm
  mv S99gdm K99gdm

Are you aware of how ~/.xsession may be used for your own personal
customization of the X11 startup? In fact you will almost certainly
want it so that you can load your ~/.bash_profile and ~/.bashrc files.
I am guessing that it might help you do whatever it is that you are
asking about here.

It gets sourced because it has a symlink to it (created with
update-rc.d in my example) which points to it from rc2.d. I only
called it localrc here in the example. I almost called it
"mypersonallocalrc" for emphasis and perhaps should have. Or perhaps
I should have called it exactly "rc.local" as in your previous system.
The name really does not matter. I was just typing in names fast and
furiously. I should have called it rc.local to match your previous
name.

You have lost me. I know "setibatch" is how you are starting the seti
tools. You did not mention "boinc" previously but I will assume it is
another thing you want run at startup. Given that, I don't understand
your question at all. If you put it in then you can take it out,
right?

I am starting out with the scene you had set that you had created an
rc.local on your previous system and wanted to transfer that local rc
startup to your Debian system. In that case pretty much anything you
did in the old rc.local you would do on your new system too. If you
started both of those in rc.local then you could start both of those
in one script now too. If you want to create individual scripts one
for each of those then that is fine too. Because your comment loses
me I would need more input to suggest more.

> Maybe a different tack needs to be taken by way of having an etc/local
> dir, and anything placed it it gets sourced at startup? Is something
> like that possible in the future?

You can easily create this yourself. See the run-parts command for a
useful utility in this process. You could package up a generic
startup interface and submit it to the community. Others might find
that useful too.

  man run-parts

But pretty soon you will find that ordering is a problem. So you
would probably create a directory that contains the real scripts and a
second directory that contains symlinks to those scripts. The name of
the symlink could contain a number to force a startup ordering
independent of the underlying name. If you notice I have just
proposed that the logical conclusion of doing this is that we would
have exactly the same system that we already have with the /etc/init.d
and /etc/rc*.d directories! :-)

[Of course the Gentoo folks have a different startup system with
declared dependencies and an automatic ordering that they like. And
there are parties in Debian proposing similar things too. Persona

I believe the installation of wvdial ran this (it definitely did some

You can set
font-lock-maximum-decoration
in your .emacs to change the amount of syntax highlighting eg value=1
gives less than value set to 2. How to be selective about what is/isn't
highlighted would require hacking the LISP I would guess...

Assuming you're running sarge,

# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

It's helpful to have the monitor specs handy to select the correct values.

I have the same card working well on a 19" monitor at 1600x1200 using
either the nv driver or the nvidia driver under sarge.

If one is not using kdm/gdm/xdm then I recommend removing them. It is
a lot simpler than manually removing the symlinks.

apt-get remove gdm # or kdm or xdm

You can always install it again if you decide later that you want it.

Yes, except that it disables all syntax highlighting. I don't want that. I
want syntax highlighting to change only font colors if needed,
not the font size for the argument in \section commands (which is the only
"anomaly" I've noticed so far).

Firefox apparence & KDE

I have KDE and firefox.
I configured the fonts for KDE (using the msttcorefonts).
I noticed that firefox is not affected by the font configuration of
KDE, and moreover has not the standard KDE aspect, while with xfce
firefox looked good. This should be due to firefox using some GUI
library (is it Gtk or what?).

How can firefox use KDE fonts, windows decoration, etc. ?
Or, is there a way to configure fireofx fonts and aspect?

Over the last few days i've done some tests. I removed the top case of
the external CD drive enclosure. So now the drive is exposed directly
to the air, rather than being covered by an extra piece of metal.
Previously after ripping a few discs, the drive enclosure would feel
slightly warm to the touch. Without the enclosure, the drive itself
stays cool even after ripping several discs. I haven't had any more
errors. So i believe the problem was the drive overheating. Until i'm
done ripping my collection, i'll just run the drive with the drive
enclosure open since it seems to work now.

The emacs (sic) command to toggle font-lock (syntax highlighting) is
 font-lock-mode

Try that and if it works for that buffer then you could always add stuff

Well, you have all the important data backed up, that's for sure. So it IS
there.

> reconstruct user.hansdp

If using cyrus 1.5, try cyrreconstruct -m
If using cyrus 2.1+, try cyrreconstruct -r user

(for cyrus 2.1, -m is not available BUT the Debian packages make a daily
backup of your mailbox configuration in /var/backups AND you can regenerate
the mailbox db by hand if you need to, it is just a pain -- more data on
this, ask on the info-cyrus mailinglist).

Problems using hal, pmount and gvm

2005-08-05 Thread Christian Hentschel

Hi,

I seem to have problems with the mentioned components. I managed to
configure hal and pmount such that an attached usbdisk gets mounted to
/media. However, I don't get the device icons visible in nautilus in the
computer:/// view. As I said, the disks get mounted properly and I have
access but for convenience reasons I'd like to the the icons in the
computer view. I believe it could have something to do with an
improperly set gnome-vfs? Any hints would be nice!

Thanks in advance!
christian

Both drives above are PATA ATAPI CD/DVD burners, connected through UDMA

The atapassthrough patches are used to enable SMART functionality on the
SATA disks, and have nothing to do with the PATA ATAPI DMA.

So, it should just work. Make sure you don't have something stupid such as
that "enable DMA only for disks" option enabled in your kernel configuration.

[SWOT] Microsoft on the run?

2005-08-05 Thread Nate Bargmann
Perhaps these spots have been running longer, but I just heard the
first one yesterday.

Office has always been a Microsoft cash cow. Is that cow now drying
up? I ask this because yesterday during a nationally syndicated
program I heard a radio commercial for Microsoft Office. No, the spot
did not mention a *new* version of Office, just Office. The spot
describes the features of Office and gives a URL for more information
including a download giving a 14 day free trial!

I heard the same spot this morning just before 7 AM CDT during the Wall
Street Journal Report on a different station.

Is Open Office now making enough inroads that MS feels the need to keep
its name out there? Or is this just a pre-emptive strike against the
upcoming OOo 2.0 release?

Whatever the reason, I applaud the community's efforts and do continue to
spread the word about OOo and friends.

setting up the graphics

2005-08-05 Thread Inhabitant of Zion
Hi

I want to go through the setup for the graphics side of things as I
think my graphics card is not set up right. I have an nvidia TNT2 PCI
with 32mb of ram. But the best resolution I can get is only 800x600
which means I can't see a lot of stuff on my Sun 21" monitor.

I am sure my card an monitor should cope with a bigger resolution.

I used to know how to run the configuration program in a terminal :-(

Anybody able to remind me.

I am not having much success with Google.

Cheers

Well, that should restore some inodes back to the system at the very
least.

So what I understand is that udev is a great framework, but it hasn't
been sufficiently implemented in user space to be "plug and play"?
Perhaps the desktop projects are working on utilizing it.

I don't like comparing Debian and Windows, but here is an experience
from yesterday. I have an IBM T42 at work without a 3.5" floppy drive,
of course. Since more of these things are showing up, we decided it
might be wise to get a USB floppy. We got it yesterday, new in the
box. I plugged it into the T42 which runs XP, of course, and the OS
picked it right up, assigned it as drive A, and I went right to
formatting a disk in it and copying a file. Didn't even need the
driver CD.

I realize that Debian provides a base and that works like KNOPPIX and
Ubuntu are building on Debian to provide a more user centric
distribution. But, this USB stuff is so basic that it should "just
work". If Windows isn't confused and can distinguish between a USB
floppy and assign it as A and then I can install my Lexar Jump Drive
and it can figure out that it's different and assign it as E and then I
can attach my portable CD/DVD RW drive and assign it as F, we in the
Linux community should be able to do that as well with minimal hassle.

On the other hand, I just yanked the Jump Drive while a file manager
had it open and that has apparently caused a major problem. I have
error boxes popping open and diagnostic information coming up, so in
that regard, I know that Linux is much more robust.

Right now I have some custom Hotplug scripts for my Jump Drive and my
camera. They are a kludge, but they get the job done.

Cyrus maibox restore

2005-08-05 Thread Hans du Plooy

Hi all,

I had to reload my notebook, and now I'm trying to restore my mail. I
had cyrus-imap running before. I made a tarball of the whole
/var/spool/cyrus directory, and restored that after reloading. Then I
logged into cyradm as user cyrus and ran:

reconstruct user.hansdp

It didn't change much, cyrus would still only see my inbox, none of the
subfolders.

I'm obviously doing this wrongly. What is the correct way to restore a
cyrus mailbox?

Thanks
Hans

Gene answers the whole lot. Only for confirmation: Here I run a notebook
with 1024x768 and 855 and that is the limit.
When I plug my nice high-res monitor and switch the notebook to external
monitor at grub, I get a proper 1600x1200 at 85 Hz, because Xfree86
detects the monitor:

(II) I810(0): Monitor0: Using hsync range of 30.00-121.00 kHz
