Cleaning out old backup (*~, *.bak) files
I have a lot of *~ and *.bak files in my home directories, including recent ones, and ones from several years ago. I'd like to set up a good system that gets rid of old ones--say, older than a month. I also would like them to go to the KDE trash bin. It turns out that making a good script to do this is not as simple as it sounds (well, not for me, anyway; I'm new to Bash scripting). You can't just mv the files; if you do, they won't show up in the KDE "trash:/" interface. You can use kfmclient to move them (like 'kfmclient move foo trash:/'), but that results in a progress box for each file, and runs at about one file per second. I ran across a script by boredhacker (http://dot.kde.org/1105642626/110574/, scroll down near the bottom) that looks like a good start, but it's taking me some time to work it into a usable system. I also found another thread (http://lists.kde.org/?l=kde-devel&m=110513719006887&w=2), but I haven't done any more searching to see if that guy's program is available anywhere. There's also a decent-looking (although rather Windowsish) program called KleanSweep (on KDE-Apps), but it has a bug that prevents it from working at all (on my system, anyway). Anyway, I'm posting to see what other Debianites do to clean out their old, unneeded files; what kinds of scripts, etc. Any general suggestions?

Just for the archive, I now can record audio. The original poster forwarded to me a recommendation from another source that he try ALSA with OSS emulation. I thought I had tried ALSA before, but it worked fine this time. I use Sarge, which has both ALSA and OSS, and the startup loads both types of modules, so that might have confused matters. I don't know if it is necessary, but I put entries in /etc/modules to load the OSS emulation modules for ALSA, and the other ALSA modules are all automatically loaded. -- Carl Johnson[EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Do you have another computer you could put the Proliant's hard drive in? You could try installing Linux on the hard drive and then putting it back in the Proliant. Even though it (probably) won't be loading the proper drivers at boot time, it should then have the tools you need to get everything up and running. Of course, this option is harder if your Proliant has a Raid controller in it and is booting from the raid array, like my Proliant 2500 does. You didn't mention much about the hard drives though, so I thought I'd throw the idea out there. HTH, Jacob -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Booting Proliant 800
Hi All,I've just bought a cheap Proliant 800 PII 450 and would like to install Debian on it. But it will not boot anything. It only tries to boot from a damaged Windoze NT install on it's disks but fails after the initial bootloader sequence.I've tried booting without any result:- sarge installer CD- Sarge bootfloppy- HP Smartstart 5.50It simply ignores the floppy or CD and start booting from disk.Even the setup utility (F10) results in a message: 'System partition utilities not available on this system'I've googled but couldn't find info on how to setup this system to boot a Linux installer.Does anyone have information on onstalling Debian on this system or pointers to good info?Groet, Peter Teunissen -- Never argue with idiots; they'll drag you down to their own level and beat you on experience.
nVidia and the Black Screen Problem... Continued
Hello As it seems now one knows about the problem I'm having with my old nvidia TNT card (see mail below) I thought I'd keep you posted with updates of my attempts to correct this poblem so far. I'm compiling new kernel and installing 0.8174 modules to see if they solve the problem. Meanwhile, can anyone recommend a card with open source drivers for a five year old machine? Emphasis on cheap here, I don't really play games much. Thank you. Steve Hello I have just recompiled my kernel, now running 2.4.27. I compiled the nvidia kernel from source 0.7174 (I have a TNT card) and the module installation went smoothly, nvidia-glx for 0.7174 was also installed. However, I now have a black screen whenever I try to run X with the nvidia driver and have to restart to get control back (can't get to any virtual screens either). lilo.conf has the parameter "pci=noacpi" to fix the IRQ problem. There are no errors reported in /var/log/Xorg.log. I have searched for answers but all I have found is reports of similar problems. I'm stumped. Any ideas anyone? Thank you. Hello List, I have just installed my new USB printer: I added my new printer to CUPS list of printers, I added basic udev rules to manage it. To change things so that it does not start on the next boot, removing the symlink in the appropriate runlevel (the default is 2, I believe) would do the trick. If you're concerned with managing services on boot in general then I highly recommend a program such as sysv-rc-conf or rcconf to manage the symbolic links for you. Alternatives to polypaudio (bug #339589)
Hi, When I switched from OSS to ALSA a few years ago, I started having problems with ESD. In particular, it often would not release the sound device, so that non-ESD-enabled programs could use it when ESD didn't need it. But now polypaudio is being removed from Debian: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=339589 Are there any other alternative ESD-compatible sound daemons that I could try? I wouldn't worry about LaTeX going anywhere in the near future. Anytime you need a strong notion of sectioning or any sort of formatting precision, a structured typesetting program like LaTeX will win hands-down over a WYSIWYG word processor. Just look at the way most people format their Word/OOo documents: They take an existing document with all of the formatting that they want, and start replacing the actual text. This can carry along a huge amount of garbage, and leaves them with a substantial task if they need to create something without an existing template. For me, it's as simple as \documentclass{article} \usepackage{fullpage} \usepackage{times} \title{My Title} \author{My Name} \begin{document} \maketitle \section{}, \subsection{}, \paragraph{}, \begin{itemize}, etc. as needed. Numbering is always consistent, bibtex handles references almost transparently, cross-referencing within a document is simple, and I can throw in a \tableofcontents, \listoffigures, or \listoftables if (and where) I need one. -- Michael A. Problem installing kde 3.5.0 on sid
Hi all, I have some kind of problem : I've added alioth repositories to my sources.list but when I do an apt-get dist-upgrade, no package from kde are upgraded ... When I try with aptitude, it shows that every 3.5.0 package is from an "Untrusted source" Well, I could install this by hand, but I believe it's not really satisfying (without talking about the time it will need). I've seen something maybe about apt-key ? Do I need to configure apt-key? (and How if I don't find it in the man page?) where can I find alioth pkg-kde key if there is one ? (I didn't find any Realease.gpg on alioth server...) I believe I'm missing one or two steps... anyone could give me hints please? Ah, well, I'm not sure. I have always used it with Latex/Bibtex. You'll notice in the Jabref window where a reference is edited, there is a "bibtexkey" field. Supposing the bibtexkey for an article is "bob:95:pumpkin". Within a Latex document, I just put \cite{bob:95:pumpkin} and it inserts a citation, then adds a perfect entry into the references. For a large document (like a dissertation), this is wonderful. Latex is a huge learning investment, but if you write a lot, or are planning on writing something very large, like a dissertation, I think it's worth it. Especially if you typeset mathematics, Latex makes Word and Openoffice look like toys, and we're talking about a program the basis of which has been around since before Windows or Linux existed. There are warts and annoyances, though. Looking at Jabref now, it looks to me like the small display window at the bottom would be good for cut-and-pasting. Let us know how it works. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
