While there are a lot of helpful people here, there are some intolerant or overly literally minded people who feel everyone should think like they do and can be quite abrupt and even nasty to people that ask questions they, as a Debian admin with years of experience, consider dumb. I see this as just a symptom of the larger problem you see everywhere in the world: intolerance of those who think differently, may have different skill sets, or may need different (or more) help than others do. But the idea of a newbie-proof system reveals a nasty prejudice against those wanting to get involved and to learn, but don't have the skills yet. Maybe the solution would be not to create a debian-newbie list, but to create a debian-advanced-user list, so those that are going to be judgemental or ugly to newbies can stay on that list. Just the name would be enough to discourage most newbies from trying that list, whether the focus was on only really advanced topics or not. My personal belief is that it is important for any group to welcome newcomers and willingly help them get used to the groups ways and styles, otherwise the group won't grow, but will shrink through attrition. > We, the experienced, ought to try and improve the processes and the > documentation, which would lead to less newbie frustration. +1. That is true -- and telling people to RTFM when they are likely not sure what manual to read, or where it is, or even how to understand a manual written by programmers for programmers and administrators is not an easy way to get rid of the problem, but a way to either push people away or to ensure the problem continues. A few thoughts: Q2. I think that google should be the first place to search and the first question to answer. I think that the second question should be a link to ESR http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html This would permit new users learn how to ask questions with better chance to get answers. Q3. It would be better to specify distributions by name (sarge, etch, sid) in order to better archive the post. You can search later for the problem and have a clue of what distribution they apply to. Q4. I think that you should remark the removing of parts irrelevant to the answer in order to remain to the point in the replys to the post. Overall, this is a very good start. PD. What is needed in order to add a link to this faq in the automated mail sent during list subscription. It is possible? It seems to me that the main reason people want a debian-newcomers list is because they don't want to see so many newbie questions come along on this list. The actual problem is that the system is not quite newbie-proof. We, the experienced, ought to try and improve the processes and the documentation, which would lead to less newbie frustration. There's certainly a limit to how much you can document and hand-hold a user, but we're not even close to that point yet.

This sentence is a bit obtuse and needs to be rewritten in my estimation. OK, so I changed two things. I modprobed agpgart and then r128 manually, instead of relying on them being in that order in /etc/modules.conf. The second thing I did, was to `aptitude install xlibmesa-gl xlibmesa-dri xlibmesa-glu xlibmesa3 xlibmesa-dev libglide3` since they got uninstalled somewhere along the line in an upgrade. Dunno why. But that now works -- dunno which of the two things I did above was the one responsible for fixing the breakage. Now the problem is that X seems to ignore my modelines I need for my 1280x1024 fixed frequency monitor (the IBM_mode_1, 2, and 3 lines that appear in the xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log files attached). Anyone know why this would be? Could it be something to do with the LCD display, despite me having told X to use the CRT (which is dutifully does, just getting the wrong modelines)? FAQ on debian newcomer list
I would appreciate any feedback/corrections/suggestions etc., (however trivial you think they are) on the following FAQ on debian-user. The final corrected version will be uploaded to http://people.cornell.edu/pages/kk288/du-guidelines.html . I am posting the initial version for your kind consideration. Thanks in advance raju beginning of the FAQ-- Why is there no separate list for Newbies? Can you create one? Should I create one? There are many reasons why a newbie list has not been setup. Though the idea sounds good, it is not considered very useful (read below). There are many reasons why this is so. I will try to explain a few. 1. First of all, if there is a newcomer list, think about who its subscribers will be. It will most probably be newcomers who are having some problems and need advice/suggestions/pointers etc., . But the people hanging in those lists are as ignorant as others. Most of the replies will be "I too have the same problem. But I do not know how to solve it." or something similar to that extent. 2. Because of the lack of expertise on the newcomer list, most questions will eventually be referred to debian-user. This will only lead to frustration as the newcomers find their questions unanswered or answered at a very slow pace or referred to somewhere else. 3. Imagine another scenario. A question really belongs to the newbie list but was asked on the debian-user. Someone or the other will post a nasty reply to this "to go seek help from the newbie list". This will also eventually lead to the frustration of the newcomer. 4. Most importantly, a newbie might not know whether his question is complicated enough to post in the debian-user or is trivial enough to post in the newbie list. If he knows how tough the problem at hand is then most likely he would have solved it by himself rather than seeking the help of others. 5. As questions tend to be referred to debian-user and due to the dilemma of "appropriate mailing list to post", people tend to ask the same question on multiple mailing lists. This will defeat the whole purpose of creating a separate list for newcomers and increases the net traffic many times. Moreover all the replies might not be CCed to all the mailing lists. As a result, people experiencing the same problem at a later time and reading the archives will have to go through similar looking posts on different mailing lists to find the correct answer. 6. Having multiple lists for the same purpose only leads to fragmentation of the user base and the expertise. I might have missed a few, but you get the general idea. end of the FAQ-- -- Kamaraju S Kusumanchi http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/kk288/ http://malayamaarutham.blogspot.com/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". If I'm not mistaken, Debian 3.0 (Woody) used 2.2.20 (according to http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=debian). I need to do an install of Debian 2.2 (potato) to do some maintenance on an old application. The author claims it will only run on the 2.2 kernel, and I want to eliminate as many variables as possible. I finally located the 2.2 distro on archives.debian.org, but have not been able to find the installation cd iso's. The documentation I found for installing 2.2 says they exist, but they don't seem to be anywhere in the archive. I've never run or installed Debian before (Red Hat & Fedora user for several years), so perhaps I've overlooked something obvious. Please excuse my ignorance, but I'd appreciate it if someone could give me a clue. Thanks, Jay -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? dpkg-reconfigure debconf
During a normal Sid upgrade to the latest xorg, some thing went wrong and it didn't work. When it rebooted and dropped me straight to a terminal, I said, no problem; I'll apt-get install xserver-xorg. It didn't work. I removed X (since it never compiled properly in the first place) and tried to reinstall it. It needs debconf and friends. Well, I had set dpkg-reconfigure debconf to use KDE-style dialogues. That's very nice, but now I need to use it with out X so that I can get X. So, the question is: How do I reconfigure debconf to use dialogue (or which ever the option it is not to use KDE or Gnome style dialogues)? Thanks kindly in advance.(And yes, I know removing X wasn't so smart. I admitt, I gaffed a bit. Please don't boil me in a cauldron ;) ) -- —A watched bread-crumb never boils.—My hover-craft is full of eels.—[...]and that's the he and the she of it.

Problem mounting 2GB SD card in USB card reader
Hi, I'm running Debian 3.1 and have been using a couple of 512MB SD cards in my USB card reader without any problems. I'm running the standard 2.4 kernel and have the following in /etc/fstab: /dev/sdc1 /media/mmc vfatrw, user, noauto 0 0 When I do: mount /media/mmc the SD card mounts fine, and dmesg shows: SCSI device sdc: 1002496 512-byte hdwr sectors (513 MB) sdc: Write Protect is off /dev/scsi/host2/bus0/target0/lun2: p1 I've recently bought a 2GB SD card, which seems to work fine (at least as far as my Treo 600 is concerned). However, when I put it in the card reader and try to mount it, the process hangs (the system is fine, it's just that process which seems unkillable - I'm writing this with the system in this state) and dmesg shows: SCSI device sdc: 2031616 1024-byte hdwr sectors (2080 MB) sdc: Write Protect is off /dev/scsi/host2/bus0/target0/lun2:<6>usb.c: USB disconnect on device 00:07.2-2address 2 hub.c: new USB device 00:07.2-2, assigned address 3 WARNING: USB Mass Storage data integrity not assured USB Mass Storage device found at 3 I've tried running: mkdosfs /dev/sdc1 which works fine with a 512MB card but produces a similar process hang with the 2GB card. I tried using the 2.6.8 kernel but when I installed it and rebooted, my system seemed to encounter a kernel panic - I have to admit I haven't investigated this in any great detail. I don't have any other operating systems installed so I can't tell if my card reader is somehow incompatible with 2GB cards, but I tried booting off an old version of Knoppix (3.6 2004-08-16) which I had lying around. Under that I can't seem to manage to mount even my 512MB card, so that wasn't much help. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, and apologies if I somehow managed to miss any advice on this when I searched the debian-user archives. Steve -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: Possible Firefox Bug?
David,Am I mistaken or did I see a recent post from you about some sortof flakiness in your wireless internet connection? Could a lost connection be causing firefox to reload the page? You know, I never considered that. I some how don't think that is it, but it is an interesting theory. The reason I don't think that that is the cause is two-fold. One, I'm connected when it happens (I can recall going about my business) and two, Firefox does not seem to be reloading; only refreshing (the difference being the former takes information from the web-site, the latter, well, doesn't.) Still, when next it happens, I will pay special attention to my connection status. Thanks for the lead.-- —A watched bread-crumb never boils.—My hover-craft is full of eels.—[...]and that's the he and the she of it.

The filename at the end of the command line must be the name of the configuration file. The filename at the top of the configuration file must be the name of the file to be rotated. Is your logfile named - exactly - "/var/log/backup"? If so, logrotate -f /etc/logrotate.d/backup should work. In fact, it's more usual, I think, to put details in the /etc/logrotate.conf file, leaving the logrotate.d directory for packages to put their configurations in, but I can't see what difference it would make. What seems to have happened is that logrotate looked for the configuration in your logfile and couldn't to anything with it. But I don't know what that "razor-agent" is all about. Perhaps you do... I hope that works now. Well. It could be a security ``risk'', in the sense that it would be possible for your developers to put up files, that trigger an exploit of your httpd (and the parsers it may feature), and thereby gain control of your system. However, that would be directly malicious from your users, and you'd be having a lot of other concerns if you were to counter such hostility. If I understand you correctly, you migrate from having your users commit into their homedirs and then commiting that into the final-dir, to having them commit directly into the final-dir. That might be dangerous, as your developers may more easily override already-correct files. As I see it, you could go ahead with your plan as is, bearing in mind that it is sub-optimal. You could attempt a remedy on your current scheme, and have a cronjob copy the data of /home/develop to /var/www/final every night or the like. If you go with this approach, you really shold keep a backup of the final-dir, at least a week back. But, as another poster pointed out, your developers would be better off learning to use CVS, or rather, subversion. Those are fully-fledged systems for collaborating on source code and the likes. change from ide to scsi drive keep system
I've seen asked before and googling does not help. Here's how I just switched over a server from ide to a compag dl380 with smart array 3200 scsi card. Install base system on target machine. Install webmin On running server, install webmin. go to system/file-system backup make a backup to the local machine in /backup include these directorys /etc /var /usr /root /home /sbin In "Backup to file or tape device" I put /backup/backup In "extra command line perimeters" I put --exclude=/etc/fstab --exclude=/etc/network When done, fish or scp the file to the target machine to a directory called /backup example scp line scp (source) destination scp [EMAIL PROTECTED]:\backup\backup /backup/ Now on the target machine open webmin go to system/filesystem backup - choose restore In "file or tape device" put /backup/backup restore file permissions = yes Then restore and reboot the machine... ** Now then, folks may tell you, you don't need things like sbin or maybe /var/spool. Courier imap complained about sbin and postfix complained about spool.. There has to be better ways of doing this, but this is what FINALLY worked for me. Suggestions are welcome! -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

THe initial startup of a gui, regardless of how its gotten too, should in my opinion bail back to command line and some kind of configuration helper if there is not a user-response within the gui within a pre-set amount of time. This way if the user or installer mis-configures X, they can regain control of the machine and try again. My reasoning is that if we make it easier to get that gui boot first time (as the above items strive to do), then there are more likely going to be problems with that gui boot. Problem with xserver-xorg_6.9.0.dfsg.1-1_i386.deb with ATI X700
Hi all, After updating the packages and upgrading my system, xserver-xorg upgraded to version 6.9. After that I couldn't start X anymore. I know that downgrading to xserver-xorg_6.8.2.dfsg.1-11_i386.deb solves the problem, but since packages.debian is down for a few days, I can't get the xserver-xorg_6.8.2.dfsg.1-11_i386.deb package to have X working again. So, I have two questions: 1) Is there another way to get the package/solve the problem using the ATI driver? 2) What can I do to prevent similar problems in the future (breaking the normal system behaviour after upgrades)? Thanks in advance, Halestino

When I try to prepare the printerdrivers for the windows clients with cupsaddsmb "nothing" happens: no error message, "Printer added successfully" but not drivers copied to print$ share, no updates from ntprinters.tdb, nothing. At the risk of asking a dumb question, have you set up the windows driver sharing within smb.conf? sure [print$] [printers] and necessary permissions. On the post from 2 1. 06 16.17 I attached all the configs if you like to see them I haven't got a copy of your original post but there is printer share section and an additional share for the drivers. I don't use the downloadable drivers and have this commented out: [printers] comment = All Printers browseable = yes printable = yes public = yes create mode = 0700 guest ok = yes guest only = yes use client driver = yes path = /tmp # Windows clients look for this share name as a source of downloadable # printer drivers # [print$] # comment = Printer Drivers # path = /var/lib/samba/printers # browseable = yes # read only = yes # guest ok = no Also can you print from windows printer setting it up with a driver sourced from somewhere other than the server? do you meen from windows client to the printer connected to cups with a locally installed driver? Or do you meen if I loaded the windows driver to the server via windows printer wizard? I just reread what I wrote and it doesn't make much sense to me either :) What I meant to say was: Also can you print from a windows 'PC' setting it up with a driver sourced from somewhere other than the server? What I do is install cups on the server with the requisite driver for the printer using the cups web interface (using lynx, I don't have a gui installed). Test it will print a test page from the web interface. Set to use the client (in your case windows) driver within the smb.conf (see above). Then set up each individual printer from windows and make sure it will print via the server. Typically, I source an appropriate driver for the operating system and particular printer. On Windows it's a little confusing because you have to select local rather than network printer and then configure a new port for the windows/samba share. Alternatively, if you explore and then right click on the printer you can install from there. Apologies, if this is 'teaching your grandmother to suck eggs' I was asking whether you've tried this before attempting to automate any driver installation. Problem with the latest ffmpeg from nerim.net
Hi, Christian: I've been using the nerim.net repository ever since I started to use Debian long time ago, and had never had any problem before. I was happy to find out that the transcode and ffmpeg all updated to the latest version recently, however, I found that the latest ffmpeg package is unusable -- it causes problem in many aspects. The ffmpeg that I'm talking about is: ffmpeg version CVS, build 3277056, Copyright (c) 2000-2004 Fabrice Bellard configuration: --prefix=/usr --libdir=${prefix}/lib --enable-shared --enable-mp3lame --enable-gpl --enable-faad --mandir=${prefix}/share/man --enable-vorbis --enable-pthreads --enable-faac --enable-xvid --enable-dts --enable-amr_nb --enable-amr_wb --enable-pp --enable-shared-pp --enable-libogg --enable-a52 --enable-a52bin --enable-x264 --enable-theora built on Dec 30 2005 15:07:33, gcc: 3.3.5 (Debian 1:3.3.5-13) First of all, the -target dvd can't be used any more. After browsing (ploughing) through the sourcecode to find a place where the font size was set I noticed OO2 kde integration. Googling revealed kde.openoffice.org. So I decided to install openoffice KDE integration. Problem is I run self compiled QT/KDE and openoffice.org-kde depends on debian's qt and kde libraries, something I don't want my system contaminated with of course. So I searched for the literal package responsible for openoffice kde intergration which (at this moment) is openoffice.org-kde_2.0.0-5_i386.deb and copied the files (/usr/lib/openoffice/program/* and /usr/share/lintian/*) in their respective places and whoops... KDE integration and small UI font was a fact! :) Hope this helps everybody looking for this solution a bit further. Grtz. That's for anyone to find out: http://www.gnu.org/software/hurd At the end everything comes to a personal choice and taste. I didn't want to answer because I could start a discussion I don't want to keep. There's people around who are better acknowledged about kernels stuff than I am, and who could give you better pros and cons about hurd and the academic war between monolithic kernels and uKernels, but at the end I just wanted to point out a few things I like as user (notice that the hurd is a unix like system anyways, so from a user perspective there shouldn't be much difference any ways): 1.- It's based on uKernel, not monolitic kernel such as linux or ms-win: "The Hurd is a collection of servers that run on the Mach microkernel to implement file systems, network protocols, file access control, and other features..." 2.- User space: "It is possible to develop and test new Hurd kernel components without rebooting the machine (not even accidentally). Running your own kernel components doesn't interfere with other users, and so no special system privileges are required. The mechanism for kernel extensions is secure by design: it is impossible to impose your changes upon other users unless they authorize them or you are the system administrator" 3.- It sounds to me that although might not perform faster than monolithic kernel, it is lighter in the sense that only the required servers are up at a time: "The Hurd is a collection of servers that run on the Mach microkernel to implement file systems, network protocols, file access control, and other features" 4.- The new uKernels hurd guys are thinking about are designed from strong security basis (coyotos and secure L4), so although not everything is perfect having something with design considerations for security is attractive. 5.- I like GNU standards and compromise with GPL: "Anybody can use, modify, and redistribute it under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL)" Again, I won't discuss about these few things or others that can be discussed, I just pointed them out due to your question. At the end I have to recognize I'm a GNU and GPL compliant software fan, so that's probably the main reason I would try and support (as an user since my knowledge is pretty little) GNU software and specially hurd, :) You can do a little research, and you can come to the conclusion you don't need it. Linux provides drivers and stuff that the hard doesn't at this moment, and you for sure will fill more comfortable with linux since it's probably the unix system we're used to. That's OK and that's reality, I'm just stubborn, :) If you're interested on trying, the main debian web page includes a port link, and there you can find another one for non linux ports, there you would find how to install debian-hurd and how to start trying. There are discussions lists also, so anything else should be discussed in those lists I believe instead of this one, to avoid anyone complaining about a hurd discussion on a debian-user list, :) Have fun, -- Javier --

problem with snapshot.debian.net
Hi all, I need to retrieve an older version of a package from unstable, which is not in sarge (plib1.8.4-dev_1.8.4-1_i386.deb). I tried to get it from snapshot.debian.net, but while it says packages since 2005/03/13 are available, I couldn't access packages earlier than 2005/11/01, and couldn't grab versions earlier than 1.8.4-2 (current is 1.8.4-3). I tried the following methods: - use the search form. Only source packages seem to be available by this method, but what's worse, if I try and follow the link to version 1.8.4-1, I get a "403 Forbidden" error. - insert "deb http://snapshot.debian.net/archive//MM/DD/debian unstable main contrib non-free" in my sources list, as suggested. I've tried several values for "/MM/DD", but with any one earlier than "2005/11/01", I get a "403 Forbidden" error on "apt-get update". - access http://snapshot.debian.net/archive//MM/DD/debian directly with the browser. The 2005 directory contains 10, 11 and 12, but while 11 and 12 seem ok, trying to access 10/01 to 10/26 results in a "404 Not Found" error, while 10/27 to 10/31 results in "403 Forbidden". In fact, the latter two also yield different results from each other, and I don't know why: - while the browser gets "404 Not Found" for 10/01 to 10/26 and "403 Forbidden" for 10/27 to 10/31, "apt-get update" always says "403 Forbidden". - while the 11/01 to 11/08 directories contain version 1.8.4-2 and later ones contain version 1.8.4-3, "apt-cache search" always says 1.8.4-3. Am I doing anything wrong? Is snapshot.debian.net not working correctly (will it be repaired)? Is there any other place where I could retrieve the package? Anybody has it on his/her system and can send it to me? For those who want to know, here's why I need that specific version: I've tried to upgrade from torcs 1.2.3 (that I hand-installed some time ago, as there's no version in sarge) to 1.2.4, unfortunately the C++ migration happened in between, so the new version depends on plib1.8.4c2 instead of plib1.8.4 (which I downloaded with torcs), and installing that package would bring a lot of unstable packages with it, that I don't want. Thus I'm trying to rebuild the source package against sarge, which I want to do anyway since I'd like to do some hacking on it. Unfortunately that requires plib1.8.4-dev, which I did *not* download, and versions from 1.8.4-2 on depend on plib1.8.4c2 as well, so I'm stuck. But I will suggest that in the future, you might want to be more courteous to the people from whom you're asking for help by using an informative subject line for your message. This mailing list gets hundreds of posts a day. Probably no one reads all of them -- it'd take too much of the day -- so folks read some and skip others, typically filtering on the subject line. Without an informative subject line, other users have to open and start to read your message before they can even find out whether they know anything about the subject and thus would be able to help. That's annoying when one has come home for the day and there's 250 list emails to go through. In fact, because of this, plenty of gurus who might have helped you will simply skip your message -- so it's also in *your* interest to use an informative subject line, as well. Using an informative subject line makes archives of the mailing list more useful as well. Months from now, when someone's looking at thread titles in the archive, how can they know whether "Please don't laugh..." is going to contain information useful to them? When you get the time, take a look at this document about asking technical questions in mailing lists/web fora/etc., which people have been recommending here for years: http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html It has some good tips, including about subject lines. You may not choose to follow the recommended format in detail; but comments about what you're trying to accomplish with your subject line are spot on. RE: Can't detect CD-ROM in IBM T43
I still keep having similar problem even with the latest debian installer (kernel 2.6.12). Having SATA disk and IDE CDROM I am unable to install Debian. Installer reports that CDROM was not found. I am able to make it installed using the trick with manual loading the ide-generic ... But after reboot the system is not able to mount the CDROM anymore. If I play with initrd using yaird (should rather be named weird :-), then I end up with unbootable system. This happens when installing with kernel 2.6. With kernel 2.4 (install 2.4) everything works fine. Shame on Debian installer (or 2.6 kernel ?)! -Original Message- From: Victor Munoz [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, January 10, 2006 1:32 AM To: debian-user Subject: Can't detect CD-ROM in IBM T43 Hello. I've seen this question posted in many forums, but every idea I've tried after reading the solutions simply doesn't work for me. I'm running Sid in an IBM T43, but cdrom is not detected at all. According to http://kerneltrap.org/node/3971, a possible solution is to make a new initrd image, where ide modules are loaded before the ata_piix module. That didn't work for me. I tried exactly what the posting said: Added ide-generic ata_piix sd_mod to /etc/mkinitrd/modules, then mkinitrd -o /boot/initrd.img.2.6.15-1.686, then reboot. Nothing new. Not really knowing what to do, I tried other combinations: 1) ide-generic cdrom ata_piix sd_mod 2) ide_generic ata_piix sd_mod 3) ide-generic ide-cd ata_piix 4) ide-generic ide-core ide-cd ata_piix Anyway, in the last attempt I removed all modules in these files, made a new initrd image... and the system would not boot! The only solution was to uninstall/reinstall image 2.6.15-1 I have also tried modifying /etc/modules, inserting ata_piix after the ide modules already there: ide-cd ide-disk ide-generic ata_piix psmouse sd_mod Didn't work. It seems as if /etc/modules is completely ignored. Knoppix 4.0.2, for instance, does recognize the CD, and the ide modules are loaded before ata_piix, but I haven't found out how to force that in my case. Any help? Problem with kdm 3.5 not starting
I have a sacrificial machine which I keep fully up to date with unstable. This morning KDE 3.5 arrived, so I installed it. It seems to work just fine if I start it with startx. BUT kdm will not start, and in the file /var/log/kdm.log there is an error saying the on the X command, the -br option is not recognised. I have tried purging kdm and reinstalling to see if any of its config files needed updating, but that that did not cure the problem. The only "odd" thing about this machine is that it has a very old S3 graphics chip, which is not supported by x.org. So I use the old S3 XFree86 xserver. I have so far been unable to find where X is being invoked with the -br option, any pointers would be gratefully accepted. I am currently doing the Google shuffle and am posting this to try to make sure I don't miss something important. ... You could very well be correct that Appletalk only does print sharing, but netatalk does both print and file sharing. Mac clients can write files on the Linux hard disk that can be read by any other Mac on the LAN and by a user sitting at the Linux computer. A user sitting at the Linux box can write files into the directories that are shared with the Macs and those files are visible to the Mac users. This is enough bi-directionality for my needs, but maybe not enough for your needs. I just don't know about writing data onto the Mac hard disk from a program running on the Linux box. I've never tried it. Hi Paul (and thanks for hanging in there despite an old man's stubbornness) In support of what you are saying (and after 4 hours googling) I found this: http://viebrock.ca/article/22/file-sharing-from-linux-to-os-x-a-quick-guide Like you, I'm unsure about how (specifically) g4l might be able to "upload" to my Mac. I'll keep digging and get back to this. I think you will find that it is OK, when it comes time to upload to the Mac, instead to walk over to tha Mac and download from the Linux box. That's what I do. To understand how to sit at the Linux box and send stuff over to the Mac would involve gaining a far better understanding of the Mac OS X than I think if deserves. IMHO OS X is an obfuscation layer on top of a very reasonable POSIX compliant Unix. Over time it will thrash about as developers attempt to satisfy marketing department's need for 'innovation'. If you tie your work to it, you will find your work is in need of revision from time to time just to keep it current with the current eye-candy fad. I just turned 73 in December. I, also, am stubborn. Well basically I could implement VPN, NFS or Netatalk (aka AppleTalk/AppleShare), and as I mentioned before I'm not considering SMB. Obviously VPN for a local hardwired network borders on the ridiculous as I have no need for private remote access and even NFS is overkill for my needs. So I'm pretty much left with Netatalk on the Linux box for file and Mac printer sharing, which (on the surface) seems simple enough. For the ftp part of my backup strategy though, I believe my Mac will need to be the ftp server and I'll use vsftp on the Linux box. If anyone is interested, I'll document the setup steps for the Linux+Mac (no doze) network (sans mistakes) and either post them here or put them up on my dotMac. There is very little out there for SOHO no-doze mixed networking. Speaking of backup, it's a good thing I have at least one avenue in place. I already screwed up my Linux connection with my DHCP router and had to restore some files to get my Gnome desktop fully up. The host name assigned to my Linux box wasn't showing up in the router configuration and I made things worse - doesn't bode well for this little project :-))) I did have a question for you Paul. Do you find you need Howl (mdnsresponder/mdnsd) installed to make sure your Netatalk server is discovered/recoginized by your Mac(s)? Setting up a netboot server
Hi all, I currently have a netboot server (tftp) for setting up Solaris machines, it is an Ultra 10 running Solaris 9. I have a local mirror of the Debian archive, and currently use a netboot CD image to boot x86 and Sparc workstations before installation over the network. Solaris netboot/installation works fine - now, I want to expand this to serve Debian installation images too - I can sort the tftp side of things (/etc/ethers /etc/hosts and the /tftpboot links) but am curious as to what extra software I need to install on the Solaris machine. Has anyone had any experience in this? I don't want to have to setup a further tftp server specifically for the Debian installation if I can possibly avoid it! Basically I want to bypass the netboot CD image and get each new client to setup purely via the network. the mirror is currently on a different machine to the tftp server. version of libglib2.0-0 too high
Hi, I have a package problem i cannot solve : In order to build a gtkmm GUI project, I must install the package "libgtkmm-2.4-dev", but there are dependencies that i cannot satisfy. when i run "apt-get install libgtkmm-2.4-dev", i find that : libgtkmm-2.4-dev depends libgtk2.0-dev, which depends libglib2.0-dev But libglib2.0-dev depends libglib2.0-0 version 2.6.4-1, and i have version 2.8.4-2 on my system. I tried to downgrade libglib2.0-0 to version 2.6.4-1, but many others packages need the 2.8.4-2 version... Do you know a solution ? I use debian sarge with kernel 2.6.8-2, on a Fujitsu-Siemens "amilo A" laptop thanks, gabriel

If the learning curve isn't to steep for your developers, it would be a wise move to take a look at a Subversion/CVS, in that case they could stick to their devloping area, but make changes and make sure that they don't overwrite others changes by mistake. A security risk.. I wouldn't call it as such, but a small mistake is made realy quickly. -- TC, ,Mark -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? an advice about security.
Hello. My users connect via a samba server to their home directories and to a develop directory that is /home/develop. Then they copy all the data from /home/develop to /var/www/final. Now they want to connect directly to /var/www/final to avoid the copy. Can I share /var/www/final with samba or it can be a security problem? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Samba 3.0.14a-3 and Cupsys 1.1.23-10 work fine on our sarge servers serving Windows (XP, 2000 and 98), Mac and Linux clients. I don't believe you will gain much from using the etch versions unless there is specific functionality you're after that isn't available in sarge. I haven't yet cracked centralised authentication and so the setups we have are simpler in many respects. Nonetheless it is worth referring to http://www.faqs.org/docs/Linux-mini/Debian-and-Windows-Shared-Printing.html if you haven't already. > > When I try to prepare the printerdrivers for the windows clients with > cupsaddsmb "nothing" happens: no error message, "Printer added successfully" > but not drivers copied to print$ share, no updates from ntprinters.tdb, > nothing. > > I just put a post here about 10 days ago, but nobody ansered, the same on > samba and cups list. At the risk of asking a dumb question, have you set up the windows driver sharing within smb.conf? Also can you print from windows printer setting it up with a driver sourced from somewhere other than the server? nforce2 and temperature monitoring
Hi, I have an Asus A7N8X-XE mobo. Things work well: networking, audio, IDE drivers are working with 2.6.14.4 kernel, the only thing is that I cannot monitor the CPU and case temperature; is there some module that I didn't compile, if yes then which is that?

Where to alter vertical padding in menu bars?
After an apt-get upgrade for unstable today, the vertical padding in all menu bars in gtk/gnome related applications seems to have increased. That is, the menu bars, menu lists and item lists have increased in size vertically, but the size of the font within them hasn't changed. Frankly, I find it quite ugly, and it wastes space. Does anyone know where to alter this? I'm assuming it's gconf2 related, since that was one of the packages that was upgraded, and it seems to be the source of all my look and feel problems... Note that I'm not entirely using gnome - I use fvwm as my window manager, plus a couple of gnome-based applications, such as galeon and liferea... The Etch installer is significantly better than the Sarge installer - I used a daily build from http://cdimage.debian.org the other day to rebuild a machine and was pleasantly surprised. Do bear in mind, though, that Debian needs to support more architectures than anyone else. Consistency across the installer for e.g. Sparc and Alpha has made my installs on those architectures so much more straightforward.
