It's just a different format of how the start of your hard disk is
organized. I don't know about particular differences.

If you can't find it on google, it is probably so obscure that you won't
ever need it. Look at the article in wikipedia on partition types.

You only need a different partition type than the default, if you have
an other OS on the same hard disk that doesn't understand the default
msdos. You should check the documentation of all your other OSes to find
a partition type that is supported by all of them.

It's good to know that debian also supports obscure stuff :-)

Things could be easy for English speaking people, since UTF-8 is fully
compatible with ASCII. However, for people that do not speak English,
for example CJK people, using UTF-8 may mean not compatible with others
that use legacy character encodings.

Re: Ethernet and wireless suddenly not working on Etch

2007-06-05 Thread Glen Yu

Hi,

Nope. If you read what I wrote, I'm writing these e-mails through my work
laptop connected to the same router. Also mentioned previously is that I
also tried connecting the modem directly to the Thinkpad with no difference
in results. I've tested all the ethernet jacks on the router and different
ethernet cables but the result is the same.

In addition, when I do "iwconfig", it shows all the right information:
correct ESSID, Mode, Key, Link Quality=92/92, but when I do "ifconfig", I
don't get any IP address obtained =[

When I run "dhclient eth1" (eth1 is my wireless) it says:
DHCPDISCOVER on eth1 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval [some number], and
after 5 retries, it finally gives a "No DHCPOFFERS received" message...

It's starting to annoy me. I can't figure out what I did (or didn't do)
that caused this or how to fix it.

Cheers,
-Glen

Looking at the broadcast clearly that should be 169.254.180.46. The range
from 169.254.0.0 to 169.254.255.255 is a special non-routable range which
I believe indicates that your router is not connected to the Internet.

Try Googling 169.254.1.1

The advantages are that UTF-8 can handle all characters in Unicode,
not just ASCII. That might not be to big a deal for your situation, but
it can still be somewhat useful. For example, you might happen to
download a file with characters from outside the ASCII range.

The other advantage is that everything that isn't UTF-8 already is moving
towards it. Sooner or later you'll probably have very little choice about
using it.

I don't know of any major disadvantages, and I know of only a few minor
disadvantages such as the issue you mention below.

The only one I've hit so far is if I ssh into the box from a box that
doesn't have locales, I have to issue a LANG=C before I run mc or mutt.

Ideas?

I think you can make an entry in ~/.ssh/config to automatically pass
LANG=C to specific hosts that can't use UTF-8.

A bit extrange, is that the old iceape or are you talking about iceweasel.
In case, I've got Debian Lenny/Syd with Iceweasel as default browser using

Etch: Gnome, Hal & Iomega Clik 40

2007-06-05 Thread Jacob L. Anawalt
Hello,

I've recently acquired an Iomega Clik! 40 (aka PocketZip) PCMCIA drive
and a few disks with a slick looking silver case.

http://paulbristow.net/main/2002/02/24/clik/

If you know the device, have looked it up, or guessed the 40 means 40
Mb, you're probably thinking "what a useless device, you can pick up CF
cards with more memory from the local discount rack." I acknowledge this
and offer no rational explanation for wanting to get this to work
better. It's just something to try and an opportunity to understand hal
and other systems a little better.

When I insert the PCMCIA card it is recognized. It automatically shows
up in the Computer window next to the other devices, filesystems and
locations in the Gnome desktop. The disks are loaded by a floppy device
driver as /dev/hdc. I can mount /dev/hdc4 by hand just fine. The
automagic ends when I double-click the "External Floppy Drive" icon and
this is where I would like some help.

The attached pmount-error.txt file contains the error displayed on the
desktop when I try double-clicking the drive icon. It looks like it
isn't trying /dev/hdc4. I don't know if this is because of some "auto"
option behaving badly, or if hal isn't merging the contents of
10-ide-drives.fdi no matter where I put it (lshal seems to support this
theory.)

Does lshal include any merged information when showing it's output?

(The attached lshal.txt file shows it's output.)

At first I expected that /usr/share/hal/fdi would be iterated for .fdi
files to load. Then I wondered if I needed to copy files from there to
/etc/hal/fdi. With either lshal doesn't seem to show 4 being appended to
block.device nor is the storage.requires_eject setting set to true.

Any pointers to good documentation on hal (especially anything Debian
specific, if required) or suggestions are appreciated.

Yes, the source is available from the Sarge and Sid repositories. If you
place suitable "deb-src" lines in your /etc/apt/sources.list, you can
download the source this way:

apt-get source libapache2-mod-auth-mysql

That should unpack the source in a directory under the current directory
and apply the standard Debian patch to it. You should then go into that
directory and read the README, INSTALL and "./configure --help" data to
find out how to configure and install your new Apache module.

However, you'll probably need to get the build dependencies before you
build the module, and that can be trickier. Presumably, this should do it:

apt-get build-dep libapache2-mod-auth-mysql

I hope this helps you.

backupninja is a decent front-end for rdiff-backup and other

It's very "server-esqe" in that you have an /etc/backup.d directory

reports success/failure on whatever schedule you choose.

Although I've never used this piece of it, it also has a console

they were simple enough that I've never needed to do that.

I've found it very useful. Hope that helps.

Write to ATI. Tell them that unless they release F/OSS linux
drivers--and soon--they've lost a customer to someone who does. Then
call them and tell them the same thing. Then you can, if you really
need DRI, look into the proprietary fglrx driver and module.
kernel module building and the non-free repository and needed here.
make-kpkg or module-assistant work well for this, module-assistant is
probably easier to jump into. But the module will taint the kernel.
And, if you're using unstable, the driver will require you to mess with
holds of x.org and/or use a (further) illegal hack. Look through the
debian-user archives if that applies to you.

Well, then you should not have any problems. MySQL and PostgreSQL can
coexist on the same machine (they use different UNIX domain sockets and
different standard TCP ports for communication). While phppgadmin is a

Depending on how you are accustomed to working with MySQL, it should be
a cinch. If you have used and/or like phpmyadmin, then phppgadmin is
basically the same thing. If you are used to a GUI program running on
your local workstation (not sure what the MySQL front-ends are called),

make-kpkg fails when kernel distclean clobbers ./debian

2007-06-05 Thread Enrique Perez-Terron
I have recently switched to debian, and I am trying to learn to compile kernels
the debian way. I need a patch and an external module, so I am trying the
following script:

M="make-kpkg \
--us --uc --initrd \
--append-to-version q4 \
--stem linux \
--added-modules madwifi \
--added-patches hda_codec.c-quique"

$M clean
$M configure kernel-image modules-image

The point is to be able to rerun the script after fixing any errors I may have
committed.

It turns out that, when the patch has been applied, $M clean tries to unpatch
the kernel source, but it does so only after having run "make ... distclean".
Distclean removes the directory ./debian, which is used by the code that
unpatches the source. Greatly simplified, the code in
kernel-package/.../target.mk looks like:

make distclean# removes debian/rules
make -f debian/rules unpatch_now

As a result I get the following output:

...
test ! -f Makefile || \
/usr/bin/makeARCH=x86_64 distclean
make[2]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6-2.6.21'
  CLEAN scripts/basic
  CLEAN scripts/kconfig
  CLEAN /usr/src/linux-2.6-2.6.21/debian/
  CLEAN include/config
  CLEAN .config include/linux/autoconf.h
make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6-2.6.21'
test ! -f config.precious || mv -f config.precious .config
/usr/bin/make -f ./debian/rules unpatch_now
make[2]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6-2.6.21'
make[2]: ./debian/rules: No such file or directory
make[2]: *** No rule to make target `./debian/rules'. Stop.
make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6-2.6.21'
make[1]: *** [real_stamp_clean] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6-2.6.21'
make: *** [CLN-common] Error 2

I have found that my script works if I modify the file

/usr/share/kernel-package/ruleset/targets/target.mk

so that the unpatching happens before the distclean.

However, I would like to ask if I am using the tools correctly. Is there any
convenient way of upgrading the kernel within the debian framework, when I need
both an external module, and a patch to one of the kernel source files?

In the patch below, I have also tried to conserve the apparent goal of the code
authors, who seem to have wanted that the deletion of the debian directory be
controlled in target.mk, and only be done under certain conditions.

Looking at the broadcast clearly that should be 169.254.180.46. The range from
169.254.0.0 to 169.254.255.255 is a special non-routable range which I believe
indicates that your router is not connected to the Internet.

Try Googling 169.254.1.1

gpsdrive 2.09-2.2 deb package questions

I have a few questions for anyone that has gpsdrive working.

1. If you are using it with kismet, do you have wireless AP's
being added the the gpsdrive map. Is yes, how did you get that to
work? Where did you put the icons (because there are very few in
the .deb package) compared to the .rpm I found.

2. Do you have the << >> buttons (Under the Zoom Out button) working?
They don't work here.

3. Have you been able to get sound, festival, working with gpsdrive?
If yes, care to share how you did that.

TIA for any replies.

Udev to burn cd's

2007-06-05 Thread JAMES FINSTROM

So here is the task

A headless tower running kubuntu 7.04 containing 2 cd burners we will call a
and b.

What i need to accomplish which I imagine can be done with udev and a bash
script, is that if a user puts a blank cd in drive A udev calls a bash
script that runs:

cdrecord -v speed=40 dev=0,0,0 Iso_file_a.iso
eject cdrom0

If a blank cd is placed in drive b we call the following

cdrecord -v speed=40 dev=0,0,1 Iso_file_b.iso
eject cdrom1

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

We are using this for internal duplication of Trixbox CD's but any result of
this project could likely be adapted to a KIOSK that allows users to insert
a disk and get their choice of x number of distros...

Thanks

AGP & DRI on a Radeon Xpress 1150

2007-06-05 Thread Jacob S
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Howdy List,

I'm trying to setup Debian Etch on a new Dell Inspiron 1501. X is
working great so far, except that I cannot get DRI enabled. I can
modprobe radeon and tell the xorg.conf to use the radeon driver, but
glxinfo still reports no DRI.

Looking in the xorg.log file it says screen :0 is not dri capable. So I
have tried adjusting refresh rates and resolution and everything but
still the same error message.

Finally I realized that it is not creating a /dev/dri/card0 device. I
am assuming 'it' would be udev, in this instance, probably because
there is no '*_agp' module loaded. So I tried loading each of the *_agp
modules present in the 2.6.18-4-amd64 kernel but still
no /dev/dri/card0. I have seen others say they got DRI working on their
1501, so I am hoping someone knows what I need to do or maybe another
1501 user can share some config details with me.

Any hints or tips?

TIA & HAND,
Jacob

setup looks fine (eg. no proxy or whatelse).

Starting konqueror from a session to see what happens (by the way, an
output debug info from konqueror is available?) I received following
error:

ASSERT: "!icon.isEmpty()"
in /tmp/buildd/kdebase-3.5.5a.dfsg.1/./libkonq/konq_pixmapprovider.cc
(81)

Is this related to my non-working Konqueror ?

Thanks.
Bye,
Bruno

What distribution of Debian are you using?

What versions of KDE and konqueror are you using?

If you have a web server running on your local machine, can you use
konqueror to browse that web server? http://localhost/

If you are using Sid, you could be in the middle of the KDE upgrade
that's happening in Sid. I don't know what ASSERT:"!icon.isEmpty()"
means, but it doesn't look good for konqueror if it's saying that. Tell
us exactly what konqueror does; does it immediately exit?

Hi Mumia,
first, sorry for confusion about mismatch subject line.

About your questions:
versions are Debian 4-etch, kde & konqueror = 3.5.5.
And yes I have the same problem with apache server (which works fine under
other browser eg. Iceweasel).

konqueror exits immediately with this message :
An error occurred while loading http://www.google.be/:

Bye,

Create a new user account and test konqueror. Perhaps something in your
~/.kde/ configuration directory has become corrupted.

Also tell us if you can use konqueror as a file manager to browse local
directories--in both the old and new accounts.

No worries. I'm actually using fluxbox without a display manager, i.e.
starting it with startx after logging in. I'll check with the fluxbox
docs to see if there's anything there I can tweak.

Hi,

zeroconf wasn't installed but network-manager was, so that was removed. I
restarted and did an "ifdown eth2" "ifup eth2", and saw that it's trying to
give me an IPv6 address instead of the usually IPv4. I'm thinking that
might be the issue, but I wouldn't know how to correct it to get it to
obtain a regular IP again (I never was much of a network kinda guy =[ ).
I'll do some googling, but if anyone has the answers please let me know.
Thanks.

Cheers,

Uninstall zeroconf and network-manager if you have them installed. Many

You can create a script that starts X for you and resets the terminal
after X is done:

~/bin/mystartx--
#!/bin/sh
startx
consolechars -f Uni3-Terminus14
--end---

Execute it by typing "sh ~/bin/mystartx" at a console.

I'm curious. When you leave X, does the "reset" command do anything to
help you? "Reset" is the normal way to fix terminal a display problem
after X or a buggy ncurses program has mussed up the display.

Questions regarding apache2 authentication using either Pam or MySQL

2007-06-05 Thread Eric A. Bonney
I would like to create a directory on my web server that is password
protected. My initial stab at doing this was done using php
authentication and a MySQL database. It seems to be working just fine,
but I got to thinking that there must be an easier method to do this
that could be built into the server with a module. So after some
research I found the libapache2-mod-auth-mysql and
libapache2-mod-auth-pam packages for Debian.

It appears that the mysql package has not yet been brought into the etc
repositories yet and I found a post online from back in May that someone
was wondering if this was going to be brought in the etc repository soon
or not. No follow-up on the post has been given yet.

I am unclear as to how the pam based one would work. Would I need to
create users on my server in my normal user database in order for folks
to authenticate against? I have a basic understanding of how to get the
pam based method to work, but not sure where the passwords and such are
being stored and authenticated against.

I would much prefer to use the MySQL method and I would really prefer to
have the authentication required at the server level and not in some php
files. Anyone have any ideas at this point for using the
libapache2-mod-auth-mysql package? Is it possible to get the source and
compile this for my system directly?

Thanks,
-Eric

I just checked my KDE environment and it doesn't use .xinitrc either.
Sigh ;( I do know that .xinitrc is used by the base X11 environment,
with the 'xinit' program, which can be used to start additional X
servers on other virtual terminals. But, not for starting the first X
server from a login manager (KDM, GDM, etc., also known as Display
Managers).

For KDE specifically, there is a program called 'startkde' which has a
man page that mentions "At the end of a session, the scripts found in
~/.kde/shutdown will be executed."

I expect there's a way to have the same happen for a Gnome environment
but I don't have any expertise with it.

Sorry for the confusion.

Ethernet and wireless suddenly not working on Etch

2007-06-05 Thread Glen Yu

Hi everyone,

I just installed Etch on my old IBM Thinkpad X30 (P3 1.066GHz, 1GB RAM). To
my (delightful) surprise, wireless was working right out of the box (so to
speak), and of course ethernet was working fine as well (as it was a net
install). Anyhow, fast forward to today where suddenly, it couldn't get a
proper IP address via DHCP. I even tried assigning a static IP to it but
that didn't help either. I've ruled out the modem and the router as I'm
connected via the router as we speak on my work laptop and I've also tried
connecting directly from the modem to the Etch Thinkpad.

It says I'm "connected" but gives me network info of:

Driver: e100

IP 196.254.180.46
Broadcast addr: 169.254.255.255
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0

All that info doesn't make any scense as I'm connected to a router, so the
IP should be 192.168.x.x and the subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0 instead
also.

Prior to this happening I was trying to add in an init script for the Debian
package tpb (Thinkpad buttons). I've since removed it but I still get the
same error (I get a similar error with wireless).

I've also tried re-installing, but when I get to the network portion of the
install it says something's wrong with my DHCP...

I'm kind of stuck right now and would appreciate any help or advice
concerning this.

Cheers,
-Glen

The unstated assumption in my posting was that there will be _2_ image

If there is only one backwards-compatible kernel image, then my problems
with using it to boot Sarge are a non-issue.

As far as I know, /etc/udev/rules.d/z45_persistent-net-generator.rules
is supposed to make sure that every network device has a naming rule in
/etc/udev/rules.d/z25_persistent-net.rules. Therefore it will continue
to add new rules if you comment out the existing ones without removing
the card(s) to which they belong. The fact that it seems to consider
device names in commented-out rules as occupied (if I understand you
correctly) might indeed be a bug or a deliberate design decision; I
simply don't know.

If you decide on your preferred numbering of the network devices and
make sure that every card has exactly one active rule in
z25_persistent-net.rules then you should have a stable situation. If
this is not the case you should probably file a bug report against udev.

Correct. I did say "IIRC"--and could not find any backup when I went
back to check it later. :)

Anyway, the lpadmin group bypasses any potential problems in using root
anyway, and he won't have to think twice about it later.

If you don't use e-mail, then I suppose you aren't interested.

Well, the cows are already out of the barn, so to speak, but

If you wrote down the original partition table information, you *may*
be able to get everything back by putting back the way it was. I

If the partition table has not been changed, and the partition is

Nope, you've got a clobbered PT.

Est-il nécessaire de passer par ddrescue, ddrhelp?

No, try to put the partitions back the way they were. Then you probably
will need to boot a rescue disc (I like Knoppix, YMMV). Using that, you
can likely pull off a copy of your critical data, possibly somewhat
damaged, possibly (if the BPB wound up in a directory) much of it gone.

Starting konqueror from a session to see what happens (by the way, an output

ASSERT: "!icon.isEmpty()"

Is this related to my non-working Konqueror ?

I have the same issue with my Acer Aspire 3690-2672 laptop. I don't
know how to identify the rtc hardware, but the system seems similar to
yours; it's an Intel 82801G (ICH7) based system, and the lspci ISA

Anyway, there's an extensive discussion about the issue here:

secret.

HOWTO? Anyone have a HOWTO that actually works?
You got me worried for an hour or so with this post. I've had the apache
ssl
for etch on my todo list for a while, without having an actual need for
it. So

I've postponed the test installation until now. I'm by no means an expert on
this, no über elite . This is just a quick writeup of what I did and what I
accomplished.

(I made a fresh xen domu with etch to do the testing, love xen)

Hostname : wwwtest.example.com
IP : 192.168.1.90

Install apache2

# aptitude install apache2

Open a browser.

http://192.168.1.90

I get the text : It works!

Then I need a certificate. I created the certificate request like this,
specifiying wwwtest.example.com as common name when prompted for it

# openssl req -new -days 365 -nodes -out wwwtest_server.pem -keyout
private/wwwtest_server_key.pem -config /etc/ssl/openssl.cnf

Then I need the certificate signed right ? I did my own signing

# openssl ca -config /etc/ssl/openssl.cnf -out wwwtest_server_cert.pem
-infiles wwwtest_server.pem

Now the certificate is signed, on to apache2

I made a direcorty to put the certificate and key in

# mkdir /etc/apache2/ssl

I then moved wwwtest_server_cert.pem to /etc/apache2/ssl/server.crt
and moved wwwtest_server_key.pem to /etc/apache2/ssl/server.key

Then I enabled the ssl module

# a2enmod ssl

Need to have apache listen to port 443, so added the line

Listen 443

to /etc/apache2/ports.conf

Then I edited /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default
Deleted the line with NameVirtualHost, not using that now.

Changed to

And copied the whole VirutalHost definition , changing
to on the duplicated definition giving me two
virtualhost

defintions ,

.
.

.
.

At the end of the VirtualHost definition for port 443 I entered

.
.
  SSLEngine on
  SSLCertificateFile /etc/apache2/ssl/server.crt
 SSLCertificateKeyFile /etc/apache2/ssl/server.key

Then restart apache2. Did

netstat -tap

To verify that apache listens to port 443

# /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

https://192.168.1.90/

Depending on the browser different warnings about the CA or hostname may
pop up,

but that is no concern at the moment.

I get the text : It works!

Then just to be sure it's still working, I removed the VirtualHost *:80
definition from /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default , leaving only the
ssl virtual host. Restarted apache2 and opened the https url in the browser
again and It Works.

This was only to verify that I could do a basic install of apache2 with ssl.

Maybe this helps you.

Do you have an eth1 device in your computer? (This can also be a
firewire port, for example.) If you do then it is normal for udev to
choose the next free device name, i.e. eth2.

Or do you ask this question because you expected that the new card would
become eth0 automatically? (In that case I am assuming that you removed
the old card before you put in the new one.) To me it seems more
sensible that udev does not mess with existing rules - after all, the
administrator might have customized them - but that is certainly a
matter of personal taste. Keep in mind, though, that changing names of
network interfaces have been a source of problems when the system
reboots during installation, therefore it is not too surprising if udev
first and foremost tries to maintain consistency in the assignment of
device names to mac addresses.

> Is this the correct way to get my network working again?

Yes, it is. If you know that you will never use the old card again then
you can comment out or even delete the obsolete rule. It should do no
harm if you leave it in the file, though.

In addition to the earlier reply, you could use the web interface at

Or you could get under the hood and remove it in /var/spool/cups/

Sorry: the kernel.org sources.

Could you point me to a URL please? Would I have to remove the
patches 1-3 (in my example) prior to using this patch against 2.6.21?

I've been using the incremental patches from
, but they only
work "within" a release cycle (2.6.21.1-2, for example). Not exactly
what I'm thinking of for my slow box.

Check if the ntpd daemon is running!

ps -e |grep ntpd

If it isn't (I bet it isn't), you can start it simply by ntpd as root.

Are you referring to Debian packages or kernels from www.kernel.org?
The latter will publish a patch against 2.6.21 when 2.6.22 goes stable.

I save those patches to disk so it is very easy to generate a new kernel.

[urgent] partition /home en danger de mort

2007-06-05 Thread bayrouni

__
bread: Cannot read the block (21709823): (Invalid argument).

reiserfs_open: Your partition is not big enough to contain the
filesystem of (21709823) blocks as was specified in the found super block.
Failed to open the filesystem.

If the partition table has not been changed, and the partition is
valid and it really contains a reiserfs partition, then the
superblock is corrupted and you need to run this utility with
--rebuild-sb.
__

Ce serait la première fois ou je perdrais (déjà perdu?) une partition.

Je sais qu'il y a dd_rescue et dd-rhelp, mais vu que la partion
corrompue pèse quand 80 Go, j'aimerais bien savoir si d'autres

stick with the default, unless you have some reason to use one of the

I can't answer the question regarding base causes, but to get a program

sharing home directories for UML's

2007-06-05 Thread Benedict Verheyen

Hi,

i currently have a setup in Debian that has about 8 vservers.
Now i want to move some vservers to UML.
I already have a kernel that supports them both and a test UML instance.

In my vserver setup, i have split my mailconfig. I have a vserver that
runs squirrelmail & courier, a vserver that runs exim, spamassassin &
clamav, one that runs samba and so on.
I'm not sure what the best way is to to share the home directory amongst
some of the UML servers as i would like to keep the different mail
server parts seperate as i did with vservers.

Is it possible to have an UML server that houses the home directories
and makes them available for the UML servers that handle email and thus
save emails in those share home directories?

Is samba suited to do this?

Thanks
Benedict

ntp and evolution - configuration problems?

2007-06-05 Thread Brent Bailey

I have some problems with processes not being able to connect to the
internet. I have a ntp daemon running, but when I try to syncronize with an
internet clock I get the following error message:

NTP support is not installed.

Please install and activate NTP support in the system to enable
synchronization of your local time server with Internet time servers.

Also, I cannot send and recieve from evolution for my gmail account. I have
the POP and SMTP options the same in my notebook which is running Ubuntu,
and it works fine.

Am I missing some configuration option here? Something to do with
security? Should I be putting anything in hosts.allow? Any help would be
appreciated.

I am running testing.

Thanks,

Have you enabled scsi in your kernel or are you using a debian kernel

Thank you very much for your support!

I read on bootsplash.org there's a kernel panic error on Debain Etch

advantages and disadvantages of local/lang en_CA.UTF-8?

Which is the correct configuration for a usb cd burner?

2007-06-05 Thread kawanokami
Hi, I just bought a LACIE usb burner and, most unfortunatly, k3b
doesn't recognize it...
The device was recognized by udev as /dev/ubb and if I insert a (full)
cd in it, KDE authomatically mounts it and makes its content
accessible correctly... But still k3b isn't able to use it as a burner
(or a reader). My question now is how a CD/DVD burner should be
recognized under Debian...

I'm running a debian testing/unstable with kernel 2.6.18 custom build
(I have enabled/disabled scsi emulation just to try it, but with no
different results) and k3b 1.0.1 ... When I power up my pc /dev/ubb is
already there (usb cable is inserted) and the device is recognized
with group "floppy", while the internal reader is recognized under /
dev/hda with group "cdrom". If I insert a blank cd in the usb burner,
it starts to recursively try to access it and fails (of course... it's
blank!)... I have to manually switch it off, exctract the cd and then
power it up again to stop it from trying...

Have you any suggestion? LACIE says its burner is tested with linux
mandriva, fedora, ubuntu (and others) and k3b... but perhaps I'm
missing some important kernel module? Or udev configuration? I googled
around, but with no luck... Can you help me?

tcpdump doesn't show VLAN IDs

2007-06-05 Thread Urs Thuermann
tcpdump ion current Debian testing does not show the VLAN ID in 802.1q
tagged Ethernet frames.

I have observed this using two machines:
(A) Linux-2.4.34.4, almost everything compiled on my own from scratch
tcpdump-3.9.5 and libpcap 0.9.5
(B) Debian testing, up to date, kernel 2.6.18-4-686, tcpdump 3.9.5 and
libpcap 0.9.5.

I have configured VLAN 100 on both machines using vconfig add eth0 100,
have set addresses 172.16.6.1/24 and 172.16.6.2/24 resp. to eth0.100
interfaces, and have set the interfaces up. The VLAN works.

But if I run tcpdump on eth0 on the Debian machine, it doesn't show me
the VLAN ID.

On (A) I do

   ping -c1 172.16.6.2

As you can see, the self-compiled tcpdump shows the VLAN tag, i.e.
"vlan 100, p 0" while the Debian version does not, although it sees
the complete ethernet frame header including the VLAN tag (marked
with ^ in the hexdump) and it shows that it is a VLAN tagged
frame.

Has Debian patched the tcpdump src or is this a bug?

Have a look at the NewbieDOC wiki [1]. The package you need is "madwifi-source".

fixing international characters with samba and apache

2007-06-05 Thread mikewse

Living in Sweden I have finally configured my Debian server to
handle the swedish alphabet (with å, ä, ö) correctly. Below is
how I did, for anyone who's interested.

***

PROBLEM 1: Filenames on a Samba share with correct å/ä/ö in
Windows do not display correctly in Debian.

Solution: Switch to UTF-8 encoding in Debian (more and more
tools use this as default for filenames including f ex Gnome
Nautilus).

Set UTF-8 by assigning LANG to a UTF-8-based locale for all
processes, f ex:
/etc/environment:
export LANG=sv_SE.utf8

If you want to keep English language in Debian (not switching
to your local language) also add this:
export LC_MESSAGES=POSIX

(If needed, create /etc/environment and source it from
/etc/profile.)

If a suitable UTF-8 locale is not available on your system then
add it. Check available locales:

# locale -a

Add locale to "gen" file:
/etc/locale.gen:
...
sv_SE UTF-8

Then run:

# locale-gen.

***

PROBLEM 2: Apache's automatic file listings (autoindex) display
å/ä/ö incorrectly.

Solution: Let Apache use UTF-8 as default encoding.

Set default encoding:
/etc/apache2/apache2.conf:
...
AddDefaultCharset UTF-8

***

PROBLEM 3: Some clients send request URLs incompatible with
UTF-8. An interesting (and confusing) example is the combination
of Internet Explorer (IE6) and Adobe Reader when opening a pdf
file. First, Apache receives a GET requests with a correctly
formed UTF-8 URL, but after that there is a GET request with
binary (not URL-encoded!) 8-bit characters according to
ISO8859-1 encoding. The latter request of course fails.

Solution: Use Apache mod_rewrite to convert illegal characters
to valid URL-encoded UTF-8 (which is the convention to use for
URLs).

Enable mod_rewrite:

# cd /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/
# ln -s ../mods-available/rewrite.load

For lowercase å/ä/ö add these rewrites:
/etc/apache2/httpd.conf:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule (.*)å(.*) $1%C3%A5$2
RewriteRule (.*)ä(.*) $1%C3%A4$2
RewriteRule (.*)ö(.*) $1%C3%B6$2
(for some reason I haven't been able to get uppercase Å/Ä/Ö
working...)

Make sure that å/ä/ö in the rules are saved in the ISO8859-1
encoding as this needs to match exactly what arrives in the
request. You can check this with octal dump:

# od -t c /etc/apache2/httpd.conf:
...
0001120 R u l e ( . * ) 345 ( . * ) $
0001140 1 % C 3 % A 5 $ 2 \n R e w r i t
0001160 e R u l e ( . * ) 344 ( . * )
0001200 $ 1 % C 3 % A 4 $ 2 \n R e w r i
0001220 t e R u l e ( . * ) 366 ( . * )

(notice the "eight-bit" characters 345/344/366)

***

Good luck with your own configuration!

Airtel won't working on LAN

2007-06-05 Thread thanigai rajan

Hi all,
Our Airtel ADSL2 220BX Modem has an IP address of 192.168.1.254
my system has an IP Address of 192.168.1.1 (which has got 2 network cards)
and my LAN machines has got addresses as 192.168.0.0/24
while i set the machine (which has got the IP of 192.168.1.1 &
192.168.0.1)as gateway for
my 192.168.0.0/24 networks, internet is not working in
192.168.0.0/24networks but working on
192.168.1.0/24 networks.

but in VSNL the same setup is working fine.

while i go through in both modems the Airtel has firewall enabled but in
VSNL the firewall is disabled.

is it the cause ? how to disable it ?
or else what will be the problem?

Hi,

Fireup your terminal emulator and hit

$ lpq

You'll get the Job Ids. Then hit

$lprm ...
