you might want to check out wvdial, I've used it before with good results.

Thanks to all those who knew the answer and would have replied. I carried on
googling and eventually found the answer.
The file lists for each package are kept here: /var/lib/dpkg/info with the
extension .list. For some reason my file x11proto-randr-dev.list was empty.
I did a dpkg-deb --contents for that package and got a list of files which
I then edited to remove permissions size etc. so it looked just like any of
the other .list files in the folder. I replaced the empty file with my
newly created file list and that sorted out the problem. All that was
really required was to know where the installed package file lists are kept
and now I know it's in /var/lib/dpkg/info
Knowledge is power. That's why I love Gnu/Linux.

Java has stopped working

2007-08-10 Thread Marc Shapiro
I just realized that java is no longer functioning on my up-to-date Etch
system. I had installed Sun Java using java-package and it had been
working at the time. I don't run java all that much, so I don't know
just when it stopped working, but it is not working now. I have used
the test on Sun's site and it does not find my installation. JAVA_HOME
had been set to /usr/lib/j2sdk1.5-sun. When Sun's own site could not
find my installation I decided that it was time to uninstall and
reinstall fresh.  I ran:

   aptitude remove sun_j2sdk1.5

aptitude suggested installing what appears to be Debian java packages to
replace the Sun package. I agreed and the installation seemed to go
smoothly, but I am still unable to run java packages, from Sun's site,
or others. Do I need a plugin of some sort? When I tried to install
sun-java5-plugin aptitude wanted to install Iceweasle. Since I am
happily running Firefox 2.0 I do not want to install Iceweasle. How do
I get around this?

Can someone tell me what I might be missing, or point me in the right
direction?

Of course, you need to be careful on what you copy-paste. Problems
can also happen with:

  foo1;
  foo2;
  foo3;

if you want to move these three lines, but if you forget the 3rd one.

Now, concerning the C language, there's a reason why it is recommended
to always use braces even when they aren't needed...

> else:

OK, not in every case. But there are cases where it is still valid.
For instance, if you have:

for foo in bar:
print blah1
print blah2

and you want to paste:

if foo > 200:
print baz
else:
print spam

so that you get:

for foo in bar:
print blah1
if foo > 200:
print baz
else:
print spam
print blah2

which is valid, isn't it? You need to re-indent to:

for foo in bar:
print blah1
if foo > 200:
print baz
else:
print spam
print blah2

and it's too easy to get this wrong. And if you want to check
a posteriori that you (or someone else) did it right, standard
tools like "diff -w" (useful if other languages) won't give you
any valuable information.

> Secondly, as I stated earlier, any programmer's editor will be able to
> indent by blocks.

This is useful. However when the blocks are large (e.g. if they don't
fit in the screen), it's easy to make a mistake.

> I know vim and idle can, pretty sure emacs can as well for those of

The problem with Emacs is that the mark changes too easily. So, this
is not reliable (I always check my changes with "diff" / "diff -w").

No, but again, changes made by someone can easily be checked with
"diff -w". Personally, I have all my codes automatically re-indented.

> >--} during the install?

A typical Debian installation is made in three stages.

FIRST STAGE. A minimal system is installed from CD. This may be the
netinstall CD or the first CD of any Debian CD set. The only
advantage to using the netinstall CD is that the image is smaller and
quicker to download and burn. You are given the opportunity to select
the source for installation; at that point you may choose CD or
Internet.

The minimal system which is installed in this stage is useful for
nothing other than a means for installation of additional packages.
In this stage, only the essential configuration is accomplished.

SECOND STAGE. A reasonable working system is installed, either by
downloading files over the Internet or else from CDs. This system may
be of the service category "print server", "mail server", "web
server", "desktop", etc. The Debian packages typically chosen for the
respective category are downloaded, installed, and configured. Also
in this stage, remaining basic configuration of the the system is
completed.

If you wish, you may decline to specify the service category ("print
server", "mail server", "web server", "desktop", etc.) of the system,
and stop at this second stage, in which case you have a minimal but
usable Debian system which is properly configured.

THIRD STAGE. The third stage is not really "installation"; rather, it
is "customization". In this stage, the user uses a package tool (I
recommend Synaptic, which is the only tool I now use) to select,
install, upgrade, and remove packages specific to his needs. To find
packages suited for your needs, use a search engine such as Google
(www.google.com/linux) or search the Debian archives.

Yes, because you get:

  echo '' `ls -l`'

which is not valid. Try with:

  foo = "' `ls -l` '"

so that you get:

  echo '' `ls -l` ''

This is a very subjective argument. One *can* write readable Perl
scripts. Also remember TIMTOWTDI.

Well, for some kinds of code (e.g. those dealing with a sequence of
external utilities), it is better to write a shell script, otherwise
this would mean a sequence of "system" or equivalent. For instance,
here's my script to update Mutt:

#!/usr/bin/env zsh

# Usage: update-mutt

source ~/.zshenv
source ~/.zalias

set -e
set -x

cd ~/software/mutt
rm -rf mutt

if [[ -d mutt-hg ]] then
  if host dev.mutt.org > /dev/null; then
# To create the mutt-hg directory:
#   hg clone http://dev.mutt.org/hg/mutt mutt-hg
pushd mutt-hg
hg pull
hg update "$@"
popd
  else
# Not necessarily a fatal error since the Mutt source could have
# been updated previously (e.g., before a PPP deconnection).
echo "Warning! Mutt source cannot be updated by hg pull." >&2
  fi
  cp -R mutt-hg mutt
else
  if host cvs.mutt.org > /dev/null; then
pushd mutt-cvs
cvs update "$@"
popd
  else
# Not necessarily a fatal error since the Mutt source could have
# been updated previously (e.g., before a PPP deconnection).
echo "Warning! Mutt source cannot be updated by CVS." >&2
  fi
  cp -R mutt-cvs mutt
fi

cd mutt
patch -p1 < ~/wd/src/patches/mutt/mutt.patch
cp ~/wd/fr.po/mutt po/fr.po
prepmutt
make -j2
make install

You can see most commands that have no native equivalent in non-shell
languages: hg, cvs, patch, prepmutt, make (and probably even cp).

> however, not as long as #!/bin/env python is
> around. And the joy of it is that if a box has zsh chances are high it'll
> have python, too.  ;)

Nope. The first thing I do when I get an account is to install a recent
version of zsh, so that zsh is always installed, but not necessarily
python! :)

Of course, one could also compile python, but with its different
versions which are not compatible, this is annoying, and it takes
too much space on PDAs (my Zaurus has perl and zsh, but not python).

Is there any chance this bug might be serious enough for the fix to
propagate to etch? Running anything with this bug can pretty well destroy
an X session.

I think there are a few games that behave this way, too. (not sure which
ones) Perhaps they use the SDL library?

php5 and UTF BOM header

2007-08-10 Thread supermega
Hi,

my system is Debian stable Etch with:
- apache22.2.3-4
- libapache2-mod-php55.2.0-8+etch7

PHP interpreter does not parse UTF BOM header bytes in UTF-
encoded .php files and so I get a well known warning "Cannot modify
header information - headers already sent" when trying to use header()
function.
How to make PHP interpreter not to send these BOM bytes to client?

aptitude tells me:

libsdl1.2-dev1.2.11-8
libsdl-image1.2  1.2.5-2+b1...
libsdl1.2debian  1.2.11-8

These seem to be the relevant libraries. If it's a library problem, I'll
stop looking for a bug in my own code.

Thanks for the great reply. I think you put me closer ---but I am not really
there yet.  To recap:
1. the usbdev1.1_ep00 are basically useless.
2. I have to load something else in order to get a usefull /dev/tty* to
refer to.

Do you know what that driver or module that I need to load for Cingular 8125
?
I have loaded usbserial...but nothing happened...or at least i do not know
if anything happened..nothing was referenced that was usefull. Do you know
where I can check?

Does anyone know a Cellphone from ATT that can work with debian...so I can
use it with a sms text messeging program ???

I guess the phone would have to have a usb cable...Does anyone know of one
pleaseplease???

Sorry if someone else already pointed to the Python Tutorial, but the
very beginning tries to address when you might want to use Python
instead of a shell script. Written by Guido his own self. I'm fairly
new to both Python and Linux and after about a year or so of both I
would say that Python is easier to learn and more powerful, but it's
silly not to learn the ins and outs of commands like FIND and GREP
which, when used properly, often start becoming scripts.

I would say learn both, and spend your time deciding WHEN to use
which, not choosing between them.

from http://docs.python.org/tut/node3.html

If you do much work on computers, eventually you find that there's
some task you'd like to automate. For example, you may wish to perform
a search-and-replace over a large number of text files, or rename and
rearrange a bunch of photo files in a complicated way. Perhaps you'd
like to write a small custom database, or a specialized GUI
application, or a simple game.

If you're a professional software developer, you may have to work with
several C/C++/Java libraries but find the usual write/compile/test/re-
compile cycle is too slow. Perhaps you're writing a test suite for
such a library and find writing the testing code a tedious task. Or
maybe you've written a program that could use an extension language,
and you don't want to design and implement a whole new language for
your application.

Python is just the language for you.

You could write a Unix shell script or Windows batch files for some of
these tasks, but shell scripts are best at moving around files and
changing text data, not well-suited for GUI applications or games. You
could write a C/C++/Java program, but it can take a lot of development
time to get even a first-draft program. Python is simpler to use,
available on Windows, MacOS X, and Unix operating systems, and will
help you get the job done more quickly.

Can the wireless router owner determine who can use the router?

Why the wireless hasn't a address like a ethernet card has, so that the router
can determine which

When you run the net install CD you go through all the things they ask, and
you can, if you desire when the installer comes to that
place, or you can just jump to installing grub or lilo and it will do that,
and then go to finish the installation. I have never used the Install
Software option, but I have looked at it once in Woody and I think it selects
a software group rather than individual packages?

I assume that you have run through all the detect:- network hardware, disks
and such.

After reboot, which is where takes you after it has ejected your net
install CD. You can place it back into the CD/DVD drive because it will be
needed again. Log into your shell as root, because that is the user that can
install packages.

From this point on, you can select the individual packages you want. Some of
these are mega packages as well, and they will declare what they are going to
install if you use:- apt-get install

I usually install  first

From then on, you can | less. What you want
might be a or just or just or anything you want
to try. By piping this command through you can scroll up and down
through the list that the search command brings up, and read about and find
what you want.

The dependencies will be installed, and you will get a list of suggested
packages at the same time. Check if they will help you with or enhance the
package you've installed, before you install them as well.

Hope that helps.

[ snip: and more of them ]

> Does anyone know what to do with them???

AFAIK, you normally do not have much contact with them as a normal user.
You can find out to which device they belong by using udevinfo like
this:

udevinfo -a -n /dev/usbdev1.1_ep00

The "useful" device node is normally somewhere else, based on the type
of the device and its function: /dev/bus/usb/ is sort of a generic
place; an external SATA hard drive will be /dev/sb? (as Marko has
already pointed out) and have symlinks in /dev/disk/; a USB mouse will
have its node(s) in /dev/input/; ...

Now, coming back to your problem: Since your example configuration file
mentions /dev/ttyS0 it would seem that kannel wants to talk to the phone
like to a serial modem. Therefore you will probably have to use
something like /dev/ttyUSB0 for a USB-connected mobile. If you cannot
find such a device node after plugging in the phone then it may be
necessary to do "modprobe usb_serial" as root. If that does not help
then you might have to load an additional kernel module specific to your
type of cell phone. (Please note that I have never used kannel,
therefore I can only offer speculation based on what I know about USB
devices and udev in general.)

Install package without configuring it

Hi

I am writing a script that automatically install some packages. I
don't want the user to be prompted for any question, because the
script will configure automatically the files associated with the
installed packages. I.e, when I install libnss-ldap with "apt-get -y
install libnss-ldap" i am asked for ldap server, etc. Is there any way
or any parameter for apt-get for not to be prompted any question
(prefer without changing any system configuration file)?

Thanks in advance.

At the moment on this machine when I run 'hostname --domain' it
returns nothing.

to set the domain name, add it into /etc/hosts, for example:
127.0.0.1   localhost
127.0.1.1   mybox.mynet.netmybox

in /etc/hostname :
mybox

at start up /etc/init.d/hostname.sh runs, parses these and comes up
the domain name.

to turn off dhcp provided /etc/host info, edit
/etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf, there is a line that starts with request.
Remove domain-name-servers from that list and dhcp wont supply it. If
you read down further, you can supply your own through the option
variables.

for more dhcpclient goodness man dhclient.conf

Yes I tried to work out what was going on by reading the man pages,
but I didn't find it so illuminating. My problem is that the DHCP and
DNS server running dnsmasq is actually the gateway server and has a
second NIC connected to a modem, from which it gets its ip via DHCP,
hence the reason why this box is running dnsmasqfor one NIC and
dhclient3 for the other.

It is the resolv.conf on this machine that is being rewritten
constantly by something.

In that context, do those instructions for setting the domain name on
the machine still hold? It slightly throws me that you quote the ip
address 127.0.1.1

You can put your IP in /etc/hosts as:
192.168.1.150   mybox.mynet.net mybox

i just had 127.0.0.1 in mine, sorry for the confusion on that.

This machine also gets its network info through dhcp, which also over
writes /etc/resolv.conf. If you want to keep certian info in there ,
like a search domain and specify a namserver, add to
/etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf :

supersede domain-name "mynet.net mynet.local";
prepend domain-name-servers 127.0.0.1;

then, /etc/init.d/networking restart

and you should see in /etc/resolv.conf:
search mynet.net mynet.local
nameserver 127.0.0.1
nameserver 192.168.1.10

you will still need to have your ISPs dns server listed in
/etc/resolv.conf , as dnsmasq uses that as its name server.

then, you can add in hosts into /etc/hosts , restart dnsmasq and it will
reread /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/hosts

I hope that clears up things a little.

Yes it does clear things up and it's a great help, thanks.

Putting those changes into dhclient.conf set up the dhclient3 properly so that
my resolv.conf now looks just like it should as a gateway machine. Plus I can
now reach my server by name from my workstations, without having its hostname in
the /etc/hosts file.

It was strange that it wasn't mentioned anywhere in the dhcp or dhclient man
pages that resolv.conf is managed in this way.

I now have to figure out what is happening on the dhclient front on my
workstations, or at least my linux workstation since that has no concept of its
domain name still. There seems to be a chance of getting it sorted using dynamic
DNS with dhclient, but the man page claims it is unlikely to work!

Thanks

Thanks very much for your help! I'm using aptitude now, it's exactly
what I had hoped to see during the install.

I guess the wording of http://www.debian.org/CD/netinst/ made it less
than clear to me how much I would be able to access during the
install, but it's clear now.

Thanks again.

I forgot to mention: I'm running this on a 32-bit AMD processor, an ATI

Re: bad package

2007-08-10 Thread Ashok Mudholkar

Well, I ran into a similar enough problem. I downloaded

   http://www.pps.jussieu.fr/~beffara/debian/frcursive_1.0-1_all.deb

and tried to install it using dpkg, only to find that something was
awry. The error was only as specific as 'dpkg returned error code 1' or
so. Naturally, I tried dpkg -r, but to no avail. Now dpkg, apt,
aptitude, and dselect were all bailing because of this failed
installation. Maybe it was unsuitable for AM64 architecture--a TeX
file?--who knows?

Anyhow, after a week of digging around, somehow I noticed someone
suggesting manually editing /var/lib/dpkg/status to remove entries
concerning the offending package. Sensibly, that person also suggests
backing up /var/lib/dpkg/status before doing so. Incredibly, I hadn't
noticed this file in the dpkg man page despite repeated readings looking
for just such a file.

From there, apt-get update and upgrade should work fine, or so it seems
so far. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than I can amend this or
correct me.

So, to summarize:

   * bakcup /var/lib/dpkg/status
   * manually edit /var/lib/dpkg/status to remove mention of the
 offending package.
   * apt-get update and you're sailing free, with the one caveat that
 files which may have been unpacked will remain on your system,
 probably invisible to deborphan and the like.

Beginner has trouble with SDL in foll-screen mode.

2007-08-10 Thread Hendrik Boom
I have a small program that makes a time-varying pattern on the
screen. It works fine with SDL_RESIZABLE, but not with SDL_FULLSCREEN.

In full-screen mode everything is sheared off into wavy lines, as if the
screen geometry I'm using is not the actual one.

Now I understand that it may be unable to deliver the desired resolution,
but if so SDL_SetVideoMode should be returning error indication,
right?

Although I don't get an error return, i called SDL_GetError anyway and got
the following message:

  Failed loading DPMSDisable: /usr/lib/libX11.so.6: undefined symbol:
DPMSDisable

I don't know if that means anything important, because it happens
both with SDL_FULLSCREEN and with SDL_RESIZABLE.

Here's the code. The #if is how I switch between full-screen and
resizable. Am I doing something obviously wrong?

#include
#include
#include

Uint16 CreateHicolorPixel(
  SDL_PixelFormat * fmt,
  Uint8 red,
  Uint8 green,
  Uint8 blue)
{
  Uint16 value;
  value = ((red >> fmt->Rloss) << fmt->Rshift) +
((green >> fmt->Gloss) << fmt->Gshift) +
((blue >> fmt->Bloss) << fmt->Bshift);
  return value;
}

int main()
{
  SDL_Surface *screen;
  Uint16 *raw_pixels;
  int x, y, t;

  printf("At start GetError says: %s\n", SDL_GetError());
  if(SDL_Init(SDL_INIT_VIDEO) != 0)
{
  printf("unable to initialize SDL: %s\n", SDL_GetError());
  return 1;
}
  atexit(SDL_Quit);

  printf("After SDL_INIT GetError says: %s\n", SDL_GetError());
#if 1
  screen = SDL_SetVideoMode(640, 480, 16, SDL_FULLSCREEN);
#else
  screen = SDL_SetVideoMode(640, 480, 16, SDL_RESIZABLE);
#endif

  printf("after SetVideoMods GetError says: %s\n", SDL_GetError());
  if(screen == NULL)
{
  printf("unable to set video mode: %s\n", SDL_GetError());
  return 1;
}

  for(t = 0; t < 20; ++t)
{
  SDL_LockSurface(screen);
  raw_pixels = (Uint16 *) screen->pixels;
  for(x = 0; x < screen->w; x++)
{
  for(y = 0; y < screen->h; y++)
{
  Uint16 pixel_color;
  int offset;
  pixel_color = CreateHicolorPixel(screen->format,
   (x * t) >> 4,
   (x ^ y) + t,
   (y * t) >> 4

   );
  offset = (screen->pitch / 2 * y + x);
  raw_pixels[offset] = pixel_color;
}
}
  SDL_UnlockSurface(screen);
  SDL_UpdateRect(screen, 0, 0, 0, 0);
  SDL_Delay(8);
}

  SDL_Delay(3000);
  printf("success!\n");
  return 0;
}

If possible download the modconf package and run it. It'll update
/etc/moules for you after you select the devices your computer has that
debian supports and on boot up will run those modules for you starting up
those devices. The /etc/modules file format is dirt simple, only one
module name per line.

For an example of how to set the path statement, here is the default
in /etc/profile;
_
# /etc/profile: system-wide .profile file for the Bourne shell (sh(1))
# and Bourne compatible shells (bash(1), ksh(1), ash(1), ...).

if [ "`id -u`" -eq 0 ]; then

PATH="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11"
else
  PATH="/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/games"
fi
--
NOTE the quotes in the path statement.

As regards KDE sessions. If, when the path is set up or changed in
.bash_profile, it is not seen correctly by a new KDE session it means
that KDE doesn't read .bash_profile for new sessions. Maybe that is
by design or it's a KDE bug. As I do not use KDE, I can't
troubleshoot it or report it.

So placement of of a PATH statement in .bashrc 'may' be required by
KDE or GNOME but, IMHO, does not mean it's correct. Maybe KDE users
should try to see if putting a "Hello from /etc/profile" in
/etc/profile gets read by new KDE sessions. If not, then I believe
its a bug in KDE.

I've always just done:

This keeps the system path in place.

I've never had to use quotes, but I guess if you had pathnames with

You could select nothing and then after a reboot edit your source.list and
apt-get everything you want. That's what I do accpet with the mini.iso.

Have you looked at the kernel source? Can you make heads or tails of
it? How long do *you* think it would take, based on your progression
so far? Some of that stuff (memory management) makes Linus' eyes cross.

As for writing apps, consider looking into wxwindows, FLTK, and Simple
DirectMedia Layer (SDL), libraries which may help. SDL is at

be found in Debian repositories and google. I *think* I like SDL the

It depends. If you study the kernel and at some point you are able to
hack it, you would still not be able to hack into a GTK program, as
you need to learn the GTK library. You will know *C* by then, but not
the libraries.

The other way around might also be true: besides learning the code
and the libraries, you must learn the coding style, techniques and
abstraction layers in the project.

Not impossible, but definitely not trivial.

I've never set up a sms gateway before, so I'm afraid I can't help you
there. But I have used wvdial to do dialup with phones, that might help
you out a bit in finding which /dev/tty device your phone is on.

Well, do remember that Debian's an (almost?) all volunteer effort, and
things do break.

Heard about reportbug yet? Check it out and consider reporting the
breakage on the package 'www.debian.org'. You probably want to check
the BTS at bugs.debian.org first to see if it's already been
reported. Perhaps there's a good reason why it's broken.

A completely impossible question to answer. Too many variables.

Download some complex C code (like the kernel source) and see if you

Absolutely. I created a jaw-dropping moment for a manager and about
fifteen developers with that one once. They thought they were going
to have to spend the next two weeks cleaning up SQL code that had been
maintained for years by various people using various editors, some of
which used tabs and others not.

I fixed it for them with an expand one liner. Hear me roar, or yodel

Re: How to add dir to path

2007-08-10 Thread Manon Metten
Hi Andrei,

It works as it should on my system:
>

> .bashrc:echo "Hello from bashrc"
> [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ bash
> Hello from bashrc
> [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ exit
> exit
> [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ bash --login
> Hello from bashrc
> Hello from bash_profile
> [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

It works on my system as well, for every new bash WINDOW I open,
but not for every new bash SESSION I start:

M> grep "Hi" .bash*
.bash_profile:echo "Hi from .bash_profile..."
.bashrc:echo "Hi from .bashrc..."
M>

Every newly opened bash window greets me with:
Hi from .bashrc...
Hi from .bash_profile...

Every tty greets me with:
Hi from .bashrc...
Hi from .bash_profile...

When I enter bash --login I also get:
Hi from .bashrc...
Hi from .bash_profile...
But then again, that's the same as opening a new bash window.

But whenever I open a new session in an already opened bash window,
I only get:
Hi from .bashrc...

So, from that, I conclude that it's default behavior that whenever I open
a new session, only .bashrc is read.

Anyway, thanks for the tip and for your response.

Manon.

Cool. I am trying this right now to see if it helps. Maybe there is
some glitch in how DPMS is operating in my system and so perhaps
xscreensaver will have a more direct method which will work better.

I did the same thing with my setup, but lately even that has not worked
right. For instance, I could open a terminal and type 'xset dpms force
off' and the monitor would sleep. However, I have always mapped Super-x
in Fluxbox to that command and would hit that to sleep the monitor, but
lately it will only make the display blink. I really cannot quite
figure out what is going on in this regard. The good news is that after
switching to xscreensaver at least that did seem to work again, if only
so far.

No, the install process must be completed first.

However, when I ran the

a simple dialog with options like Print Server, Mail Server, and Web
Server, but nothing like a list that would have taken 21 CDs to hold.

My primary question is, did I misunderstand what the net-install was
meant to do? I had thought it would give me access to the full package
list via downloads - does it not do that? Or did I do something wrong
during the install?

Recommendations and tips are appreciated - I'm fairly new to the *nix

Net-install allows you to have a basic Debian system from which you can
install other software.

I suggest you select the "Desktop" option if there is one*. That should
give you a graphical user interface and a few utilities. From there, you
can use either "aptitude" or "synaptic" to install more Debian software
packages. I suggest you use aptitude.

Refer to these:

http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/

http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/reference/index.en.html

http://wiki.debian.org/

I hope this helps.

* The net-install disk probably omits this. That's why I always use CD#1.

Yes, I was doing this in KDE. I start bash from an icon on my panel
(it's run as /bin/bash --login). I tried what you suggested, switched to
tty1 and logged in as manon. It said "Hello World..." to me, coming
from the 'echo' line I previously added to .bash_profile. Same result
in tty2.

Well, there's definitely something wrong here, but it isn't really much of a
problem no more, coz I put my scripts in ~/bin now, as Andrei suggested.
And the problem seems to be related to starting a new bash session, not
to a tty or opening a new bash window.
However, obviously something is really messed up but I don't know
where to look for a solution.

The strange thing also is, when I put PATH=~/XX:"${PATH}" in .bashrc
a every new session recognizes the new path although the order is
somewhat different (for readability I replaced /home/manon with ~):

first bash window: ~/bin:~/XX:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/games
second session: ~/XX:/~/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/games
third session: ~/XX:/~/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/games
etc.

second bash window: ~/bin:~/XX:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/games
second session: ~/XX:/~/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/games
third session: ~/XX:/~/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/games
etc.

In tty1 & tty2 I got: ~/bin:~/XX:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/games

Every tty greets me with "Hello World..."; every new bash window does
the same, but not a single new bash session says "Hello World..." to me.
So the problem seems to be related to second (or higher) bash sessions.
I thought it should inherit the path from its parent, but I'm not sure.

Confusing, huh?

Manon.

because if /root/scripts = $HOME/scripts while runnning as root

Debian has tens of thousands of packages, many of which conflict (multiple
MTAs, for example). "Installing everything" is neither possible nor
desireable. Why would you want to, with the entire archive just an

Are you doing all of this in KDE? If so I have no clue. I would
suggest you go to a console VT and enter the path statements I showed.
Then, if it doesn't work there, there is a real problem or I am an
idiot.

My MP3 player is on /dev/sdb, since sda is SATA HDD.

It looks like you machine is finding the device and if you look further
into the log, you will see where it gets its device name. Here I just
plugged in a usb key:
Aug 10 10:15:31 proto kernel: usb 3-4.3: new high speed USB device using
ehci_hcd and address 7
Aug 10 10:15:31 proto kernel: usb 3-4.3: configuration #1 chosen from 1
choice
Aug 10 10:15:31 proto kernel: scsi7 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage
devices

Aug 10 10:15:31 proto kernel: usb-storage: device found at 7
Aug 10 10:15:31 proto kernel: usb-storage: waiting for device to settle
before scanning
Aug 10 10:15:36 proto kernel: Vendor: SanDisk Model: Cruzer Mini
Rev: 0.4
Aug 10 10:15:36 proto kernel:   Type:   Direct-Access
ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Aug 10 10:15:36 proto kernel: SCSI device sdf: 4001760 512-byte hdwr
sectors (2049 MB)

Aug 10 10:15:36 proto kernel: sdf: Write Protect is off
Aug 10 10:15:36 proto kernel: sdf: Mode Sense: 03 00 00 00
Aug 10 10:15:36 proto kernel: sdf: assuming drive cache: write through
Aug 10 10:15:36 proto kernel: SCSI device sdf: 4001760 512-byte hdwr
sectors (2049 MB)

Aug 10 10:15:36 proto kernel: sdf: Write Protect is off
Aug 10 10:15:36 proto kernel: sdf: Mode Sense: 03 00 00 00
Aug 10 10:15:36 proto kernel: sdf: assuming drive cache: write through
Aug 10 10:15:36 proto kernel:  sdf: sdf1

so we see that it gets assigned to /dev/sdf with a partition at sdf1. Then
you can mount /dev/sdf1 to where ever you like. Alternatively you can
install the usbmount package, and it will auto mount usb devices as they
get found as well.

First, try to get Etch if you have posibilities. It has much newer software.

Anyway, Sarge should support reiserfs, even if kernels does not, you
need only to install grub and it does support reiserfs. As I can
remember, you need to enter "expert2.6" at Install CD boot prompt to get
all options.

That ain't the solution either. I got exactly the same output.
So I entered the line echo "Hello World..." at the end of
.bash_profile, just to see if if were executed by a new bash
session. And ... NO.

Whenever I open a new bash window, I read "Hello World..."
but when I open a new session, no message is shown.

So, I think the problem is whenever I open a new session,
.bash_profile isn't read anymore. But I really have no clue how
to solve this.

Check out the "expand" command. It's easier to script when you need to
do some directories full of files.

You may find answers to some of your problems on the website of the NewbieDOC
project [1]. The great thing is that you can contribute your experiences back to
the project because the website is a wiki.

There is an example of a /etc/network/interfaces file in section 3 of the
article on setting up a wireless network card [2]. (The ethernet card - eth0 -
section has been commented out in this article.) You may need to add nameservers
to /etc/resolv.conf. You can restart the network with the new configuration, as
user root, with the commands
# /etc/init.d/networking stop
# /etc/init.d/networking start

If you want to dig deeper, have a look at some man pages with these commands
$ man ifconfig
$ man ifup

There is also an article on managing users and groups [3].

Logs are kept in /var/log/. Eg to view the last few entries in the system log
(as root)
# tail /var/log/syslog

To follow the system log in real time
# tail -f /var/log/syslog

Other ways to read the logs:
# more /var/log/syslog
# cat /var/log/syslog
# less /var/log/syslog
# grep -i fail /var/log/boot

(Check the man pages for these commands.)

You might find the Debian Reference [4] useful too.

Boot troubles

Hello.

I can't boot my Debian (

I installed Windows XP, it setted it's own code in MBR. I wasn't
confused, I just inserted first DVD of Debian GNU/Linux Sarge in
DVD-ROM, but then I understood... The kernels on DVD doesn't support my
reiserfs filesystem!

Now I'm really stoped. I don't know, what to do and how to run GRUB from
my system...

I can't download some LiveCD distributive with reiserfs support because
my internet is very limited. I can't by it because of "living at small
town somewhere in Russia"...

May be there is some solution how to install GRUB with it's settings in
my MBR again?

The hardware is fine - I checked the SMART status, did a full read/write
test with badblocks on md0, and in fact the very same hardware and RAID
setup worked fine for the past year, using a 2.4 kernel, with high
filesystem load every day.

It's just when I put a filesystem on top of an md device that things
break - my assumption is that there is a race in the kernel involving
sata_sx4 and the md modules. Given that the Promise SX4 is not really a
shining piece of hardware, and not that popular, I wouldn't be surprised
if the driver is a bit flaky too.

Anyway, we've decided to replace it with a real RAID controller, that
should sort things out.

Syslog Agents for Win32

2007-08-10 Thread Nathan
I've got my first Linux box up and running as a syslog server. It is
working fine. I've got several Windows servers that I would like to
have them log their event logs to the Linux box.

I've been using a program called "winlogd"
(http://edoceo.com/creo/winlogd.php). However it seems to log TOO much.
 System calls, debug info, etc, etc are all being logged. I don't know
of any way to adjust it, and since it doesn't appear to conform to Unix
syslog levels and I don't know how to go about filtering out the junk in
my syslog-ng conf file.

Is there a "better" syslog agent for Windows out there that I've missed?
 Or is there a setting on this program or in my conf file that I've
missed?  Thanks for your help.

Nathan

I agree with your assessment and thought that I might simply just
compile the programs independently. This resulted in large number of
compilation errors so I also guessed that glibc and possibly gtk could
be involved. I am a bit busy at work at the moment and don't have a
whole lot of extra time so I chose to use apt-pinning to go back to
debian stable which resolved the issue. I did try unstable first but
had the same issues. Let's hope devs are aware of it.

Difference is the OP was requesting opinions. You don't like mine.
Great, we got it.

Sorry, no, that is where you are wrong. I am correcting the
misconceptions that other people have about whitespace and also giving my hard
earned experience in scripting several different languages on many different
platforms. However if you think for one second that I think others should
conform to my ideals then you missed my final message to the OP.

In all honesty, that is the best thing to do. Go with what you know and
expand into what you prefer from there.

Hardly sounds like someone pushing his ideals on others. There's a fine
line between expressing an opinion, correcting misconceptions and believing
that others are truly wrong in what they do. I've done two of the three and
neither is the one you think I've done.

Nope, they don't. But at the same token there are measurable and
quantifiable differences in the effectiveness of coding practices and the
effect a language has on how quickly one can hammer out code.

> I'll give you one thing Steve, you were one of the only people to

Two or three, actually.

> But I truly believe (after watching these debates go on literally for
> over a decade in many cases) that the choice of language is personal,

That it is. But when there are skewed perceptions about what comes into a
language then one can miss great opportunities which might better suit their
personal feel of what a language should or should not do.

> I think it matters little, for such a small and simple program, what
> language is used. The OP just needs to try a few and see what they like.

But that's just it. The OP did not mention what use he had for his
language. You're looking at the narrow scope of "oh, someone wants to convert
files from A to B". That is not what was asked. What was asked was a general
case of which is better, bash or Python. Both are fully capable of handling
the quick and dirty cases that shell does a passable job at. That is why the
example of converting a file from A to B came about. But of those two choices
only Python can go on to do a great many other things.

Given the general case with no specific information are you going to
recommend the simplistic and idiosyncratic, limited use shell scripting
language or are you going to recommend the language which can handle anything
shell does just as well, can also be used for near-native programming of
graphical, cross-platform applications, has been used as a scripting languages
for games as well as the main programming language for games themselves?

your very narrow mindset you find the problems in shell.

And when you venture past yours, you'll find that ALL programming
languages have SERIOUS flaws in them... and that most can get this
particular relatively simple job done, just fine, with fairly similar
amounts of effort by someone who is sufficiently skilled in that
particular language.

In other words, if it takes you only 15 minutes to write something to
do the job in Python, because you enjoy Python, someone else will
also just as easily (to them) write the same program with the same
results in shell, or Perl, or zsh's flavor of "shell" or whatever.

Some other folks can write the thing just as easily and quickly (from
their perspective) in REXX, C, whatever else you can think of -- in
this case, something that can make system calls to the outside heavy-
hitter conversion software that's really doing the hard work.

It doesn't matter -- at all -- what you choose, if you're comfortable
with your choice. Even if you're not good with a particular language
or any language, starting the project and ignoring the constant
clamor of the hoards of people spending their time arguing about
which language is "better", you'll get far more done than they ever
will accomplish.

It's just something for coders (who are human and have different
tastes) to argue incessantly over, and for some to evangelize as
"religion". You appear to have found the God of Python meets your
every need, and you bow down and submit your reverent respect for the
sacrament of Whitespace, as all who follow the Python path, must.

The original poster seemed worried that he only knows a couple of
(perhaps) obscure languages. If those languages can't make system
calls, he'll have to learn something new. But the hardest concept to
pass to folks staring at that mountain is that the underlying
concepts of variables, loops, conditionals, etc etc etc... don't change!

I'll give you one thing Steve, you were one of the only people to
publish code samples. Nicely done on that.

But I truly believe (after watching these debates go on literally for
over a decade in many cases) that the choice of language is personal,
and more a preference than something people can articulate properly
in terms of "better". "Something I like" might be a much better way
to eplain it.

I think it matters little, for such a small and simple program, what
language is used. The OP just needs to try a few and see what they
like.

I have tried with specifid h/v sync ranges as given in the monitor
manual, as well as no values such that auto detection takes place -
neither worked.

Are you using a vga or dvi connection to the monitor? I am using DVI,
and wonder if that is making things harder? (i would of course prefer
dvi, but would be happy with vga at this rate).
