_ Yahoo! kullaniyor musunuz? Re: The effectiveness of 'make uninstall' command
Amit Uttamchandani wrote: Hey guys, I recently compiled a bunch of software on my Debian Etch system for testing. After testing I wanted to remove them and I have been running the 'make uninstall' command in the source code directory of the respective application. I was curious as to how effective this command was. It seems like it removes everything it installs. Now this brings up the obvious question of the usefulness of the checkinstall software for managing installations outside of debian repos. I understand checkinstall is probably usefull for computers in a lab setup but for personal workstation, 'make install' and 'make uninstall' seems to be sufficient. Any comments? Sometime back I compiled subversion's upstream version on a CentOS machine (the actual OS does not matter in this case) and discovered that subversion does not come with a 'make uninstall' option. You have to literally figure out the list of binaries, libraries created by the 'make install' command and then remove those files manually. If this is the case with a well established software like subversion, I would be reluctant about relying too much on 'make instal|uninstall' capabilities. hth raju -- Kamaraju S Kusumanchi http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/kk288/ http://malayamaarutham.blogspot.com/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Shutdown script for lvm2
I have manually migrated my debian system to lvm2, but I am having a problem with the shutdown script. For example when doing runlevel 6 (reboot), the 3 last script which are executed are S50lvm2 S60umountroot S90reboot (in that order) The lvm2 script tries to do a vgchange -an which of course fails as the root filesystem (also on lvm2) is still mounted. The error message is Can't deactivate volume group linux_vg with 1 open logical volume(s) How should this work? Didn't etch have support for setting up lvm2 during installation? Did that put the root onto lvm2? If so, could anybody take a peek at how their shutdown scripts handle this problem. Is it even a problem? I get an error message, but as far as I can see there are no real ill effects. The warning is annoying, though. Please CC me, I am not on this list. Regards, Thue

hard disk spin down
Most of the time spent on my laptop is reading. Often the laptop is not powered, so that i can hear the inner disk spinning down and restarting every dozen seconds, because many processes are running, while i am reading. My question is: is there a way to force processes not to read and write so often? Alternatively, is it safe disabling the disk spin down? My understanding is that time to spin down is set in /etc/default/acpi-support, where SPINDOWN_TIME=12 and controlled by the kde-guidance-powermanager package. Is that correct? alsa and alc883 audio codec
Hi there. I installed Debian Etch on my acer 5102wlmi notebook yesterday, in a temporary partition (I already had Ubuntu installed, and wanted to give Debian a try because of Ubuntu' s insanely slow booting process). So, after booting, I let the system update the kernel and reboot. Working fine. When I tested the sound system, suprise! It works! For the first time in months I can record sound on my laptop. I was able to use alsamixer , and record sound from both the built-in mic and the external mic I have. Since my Ubuntu Gutsy installation was a bit too slow and misconfigured, I wiped it out, created a larger partition for Debian, and installed it with the netinst disc. But now, sound recording doesn' t work anymore. Alsamixer fails giving the message alsamixer: function snd_mixer_load failed: Invalid argument , and amixer fails too. Any clues? I'm going to get the alsa source and try compiling it myself, now. stunnel4 and Debian
I'm trying to set up a new dbmail box which should only use stunnel4 for access. I'm running into a number of problems with this set up and I'm not getting any message back from various applications, which makes it kind of hard to manage. First. /etc/init.d/dbmail start doesn't nothing. No errors, no running applications. nothing. And it doesn't seem to have an ENABLE=0 flags anywhere in the typical locations (often seen in Debian). And there's no logs generated at /var/log/dbmail/ -- the directory is there, but no logs. Nothing on STDOUT, STDERR, or syslog either. This is a big fat help! Second. I'm trying to set this up using stunnel4. I've followed the various directions and such to the best that make sense but I keep getting the same sets of errors, depending on what I do with them. When I start stunnel4 I get an error that I need to specify a pid= in my stunnel.conf file. Well, there is one. It's default and it says 'pid=/stunnel.pid' which is confusing. I'd checked on Fedora 7's version of util-linux, and the old schedutils tools are there. The version on Lenny is 2.12r-19. I'll go for the later Sid version, and hope it installs ok. I'm still trying to find out why Marcos's rtirq from the musix repo is not being started. It appears to have something to do with, when it installs, it creates a sysconfig directory in /etc, and puts rtirq in that, rather than in /etc/default, which is where it should be. If Sid's util-linux installs on Lenny ok, I think I'll install rtirq, which will create an /etc/sysconfig directory, then make a symlink from /etc/default/rtirq pointing to /etc/sysconfig/rtirq, and see if that resolves the problem with rtirq I had on Etch, before I used chrt to change the priority of the soundcard to 90, which fixed the realtime problem on Etch. I know rtirq isn't running on Etch because sysv-rc-conf shows runlevels 2,3,4,and 5 unchecked, and trying to run /etc/init.d/rtirq status, just segfaults, as does /etc/init.d/rtirq start. I'll post back either way, as this may be usefull to someone wanting to get realtime working on Debian. Thanks for your help. Nigel. Update as promised. The Sid (unstable) version of util-linux installs ok on Lenny, and I now have chrt in /usr/bin. The problem with the rtrirq package that I got from the Musix repo not starting, is either down to a problem with the package, or it wasn't being installed correctly on Etch, and Lenny. I ended up with a start script for rtirq in /etc/init.d, and the same start script in /etc/sysconfig (the sysconfig directory had been created during the install of rtirq). I checked in my Fedora 7 install, and in /etc/sysconfig the rtirq config script is very small. From a link posted on the LAU list (see below) I downloaded a tarball for rtirq, unpacked it, deleted the start script from /etc/sysconfig, and pasted the correct config script that was in the tarball into /etc/sysconfig, and also renaming it, as it was named rtirq.conf, and the the start script is looking for rtirq in /etc/sysconfig. http://www.rncbc.org/jack/rtirq-20070101.tar.gz Assuming you have one or two realtime kernels installed, the only other thing necessary is to edit /etc/security/limits.conf, and add the following lines. @audio - rtprio 99 @audio - nice -10 @audio - memlock 400 These lines are for the sake of jack. Open qjackctl, then settings. check the realtime box, and set the realtime prio to 70. A reboot with Lenny, starting jackd in qjackctl, and I'm now getting one xrun every 58 mins. Problem solved, but it took a bit of time. Nigel.
