http://www.boingboing.net/2004/01/27/solving-and-creating.html

http://drupal.org/node/11104
http://surblhost.sourceforge.net/

 bluetooth toshiba:

 http://memebeam.org/toys/ExperimentalToshibaAcpiDriver

 Après avoir patché, ils disent:

You may also have to fiddle with your system's module autoloading
system so that, when a program tries to access /dev/toshiba, the
toshiba_acpi driver is loaded rather than the original toshiba driver.

On Debian, this is done by editing /etc/modutils/toshutils (for the
2.6 kernel it's /etc/modprobe.d/aliases) and replacing toshiba with
toshiba_acpi. Then run the update-modules command.

Merci :-)

Co z wersjami pakietów?

2007-10-07 Thread Lech Pańkowski
Kłaniam się.
Podczas instalacji Debiana 4.0r0 (etch) pojawił się komunikat w stylu
..obsolete major version postgresql-7.4.. z sugestią instalacji wersji
8.2. Poszukałem i okazuje się, że 8.2 jest wśród
'//packages.debian.org/unstable/misc/..'.

 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/doc/xserver-xorg-video-nv$ apt-cache search geforce

 xserver-xorg-video-nv - X.Org X server -- NV display driver

 xserver-xorg-video-nv
 Package: xserver-xorg-video-nv
 Priority: optional
 Section: x11

Description: X.Org X server -- NV display driver
This driver for the X.Org X server (see xserver-xorg for a further
description) provides support for NVIDIA Riva, TNT, GeForce, and Quadro cards.
  .
Note that this is not the same as the binary-only 'nvidia' driver, which
adds 3D support, but is binary-only and not supported.
 [...]

 # apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-nv

 # EditorDeTextos /etc/X11/xorg.conf

 # apt-get install mc

Suerte.

Description: Dummy transition package for genisoimage
This is a dummy package to ease the transition to genisoimage, the
fork of mkisofs. It provides a mkisofs symlink to genisoimage for
compatibility purposes. Please use genisoimage instead of mkisofs.
 $ apt-cache show genisoimage |tail -3
Please install cdrkit-doc if you want most of the documentation and
   README files.

No vas a

   nuevas tierras! BSD.

¿Migrar a BSD?

alsa. Vou tentar compilar o alsa eu mesmo agora.
Alguma idéia pra resolver isso?
Valeu,

Re: The effectiveness of 'make uninstall' command

 Hey guys,

I recently compiled a bunch of software on my Debian Etch system for
testing. After testing I wanted to remove them and I have been running the
'make uninstall' command in the source code directory of the respective
application. I was curious as to how effective this command was. It seems
like it removes everything it installs.

Now this brings up the obvious question of the usefulness of the
checkinstall software for managing installations outside of debian repos.
I understand checkinstall is probably usefull for computers in a lab setup
but for personal workstation, 'make install' and 'make uninstall' seems to
 be sufficient.

 Any comments?

Sometime back I compiled subversion's upstream version on a CentOS machine
(the actual OS does not matter in this case) and discovered that subversion
does not come with a 'make uninstall' option. You have to literally figure
out the list of binaries, libraries created by the 'make install' command
and then remove those files manually. If this is the case with a well
established software like subversion, I would be reluctant about relying
too much on 'make instal|uninstall' capabilities.

Shutdown script for lvm2

2007-10-07 Thread Thue Janus Kristensen
I have manually migrated my debian system to lvm2, but I am having a problem
with the shutdown script.

For example when doing runlevel 6 (reboot), the 3 last script which are
executed are
S50lvm2
S60umountroot
S90reboot
(in that order)

The lvm2 script tries to do a
   vgchange -an
which of course fails as the root filesystem (also on lvm2) is still
mounted. The error message is
Can't deactivate volume group linux_vg with 1 open logical volume(s)

How should this work?

Didn't etch have support for setting up lvm2 during installation? Did that
put the root onto lvm2? If so, could anybody take a peek at how their
shutdown scripts handle this problem.

Is it even a problem? I get an error message, but as far as I can see there
are no real ill effects. The warning is annoying, though.

Please CC me, I am not on this list.

Regards, Thue

What does the error mean? The fail2ban-ssh chain exists in iptables:

Chain fail2ban-ssh (0 references)
target prot opt source destination
RETURN all -- anywhere anywhere

But fail2ban doesn't block when I get up to 7 fails from the same IP,
while I have it configured to ban at 3.

Any ideas?

hard disk spin down

2007-10-07 Thread pol
Most of the time spent on my laptop is reading. Often the laptop is not
powered, so that i can hear the inner disk spinning down and restarting
every dozen seconds, because many processes are running, while i am
reading.
My question is: is there a way to force processes not to read and write so
often?
Alternatively, is it safe disabling the disk spin down?

My understanding is that time to spin down is set
in /etc/default/acpi-support, where SPINDOWN_TIME=12
and controlled by the kde-guidance-powermanager package. Is that correct?
Why so a short time (12s) is set as the default?

stereo on mp3 playback

2007-10-07 Thread andy

Hi

When playing CDs on my Lenny system, I get great stereo. However,
whenever playing mp3s - even those that I have ripped myself in stereo,
I don't get stereo at all: music only comes out of the right speaker, no
matter which application I am using for playback. I am using ALSA and as
far as I can tell have the basic arrangement set up properly. I ran
alsaconf and selected the correct card, and then alsamixer and adjusted
the settings: the CD still plays in stereo, but the mp3 players not.

Can anyone give me a steer in the right direction please?

Thanks

A

cpu frequency after hibernation

2007-10-07 Thread Bhasker C V
Hi all,

 I use acpi_cpufreq (cpufreq_conservative)
When I bootup the system the cpu frequency is set to the low
and whenever there is a need the cpu frequency automatically shoots up
and caters the need.

But the problem arises when i recover from a suspend-to-disk. The cpu
frequency is stuck to the highest and doesnot come down at all !

Is this a bug or am i doing any mistake here ?

What is the c part of the permissions and how do you set it? I have

The c means that it is a special file to begin with; you cannot just
set this property for an existing normal file. Such special files used
to be created with the mknod command, but nowadays udev should take
care of their creation.

Would it be OK to just chmod 666?

The permission error will probably be gone then, but it would still be a
normal file and not a real /dev/null, which is used to dump the output
of all sorts of commands that are called in scripts. (The job of
/dev/null is to swallow input without a trace.)

I would remove (or rename) the file and run

udevtrigger

as root, followed by

echo xxx /dev/null

That should force udev to create the device node. Afterwards you should
see this:

$ file /dev/null
/dev/null: character special (1/3)

If that does not work then something is wrong with your udev
configuration. The first thing to check is if the relevant rules exist:

$ grep null /etc/udev/*
/etc/udev/links.conf:M null c 1 3
/etc/udev/permissions.rules:KERNEL==null, MODE=0666

If all else fails then you could try to create the device node yourself
(as root):

mknod -m 0666 /dev/null c 1 3

However, if udev is active it will normally intercept this command and
redirect the device node creation to /dev/.static/dev/null (AFAIK).

Exim was doing a very good job of keeping them from getting in. The
reason I posted was the fact of all the *different* ips trying to send

 A better test is:

 speaker-test -t sine -c2

This command should produce a (rather boring) sine wave output which
switches between left and right channel every few seconds. Does that
 work?

Thanks for the idea. Left front does not work - which is the speaker that

It is possible that a module upgrade introduced a regression. Did the
stereo playback of mp3 files work before, or did you only listen to CD
playback up to now?

In any case, I think you should first check the alsa mixer settings.

alsa and alc883 audio codec

2007-10-07 Thread Khristian
Hi there.
I installed Debian Etch on my acer 5102wlmi notebook yesterday, in a
temporary partition (I already had Ubuntu installed, and wanted to
give Debian a try because of Ubuntu' s insanely slow booting process).
So, after booting, I let the system update the kernel and reboot.
Working fine. When I tested the sound system, suprise! It works! For
the first time in months I can record sound on my laptop. I was able
to use alsamixer , and record sound from both the built-in mic and the
external mic I have.
Since my Ubuntu Gutsy installation was a bit too slow and
misconfigured, I wiped it out, created a larger partition for Debian,
and installed it with the netinst disc.
But now, sound recording doesn' t work anymore. Alsamixer fails
giving the message alsamixer: function snd_mixer_load failed: Invalid
argument , and amixer fails too.
Any clues? I'm going to get the alsa source and try compiling it myself, now.
TIA,

PCIe Video and Open source 3D drivers

2007-10-07 Thread Wakko Warner
Please keep me CC'd, I've not subscribed to the list yet.

I've been thinking about upgrading one of my computers but I've had
difficulties figuring out if any PCIe video cards have open source 3D
drivers.

My current system is using an ATI FireGL X1 graphics card (R300 I think).
I'm looking for a graphics card comparible or faster that is PCIe that open
source 3D drivers are available. I came across free3d.org but was unsure if
the drivers are already available. I read the X800 radeons were supported.
According to some texts I've found, a FireGL V7100 has the X800 chip.

Does anyone know if this will work? I'm using SID on this machine.

Thanks, that seems to be the problem. permissions for /dev/null
  are -rw-r--r--

What is the c part of the permissions and how do you set it? I have
googled and searched my books but all I can find is that it is a
character device file but no mention of how to set the attribute.

I've chmod 666 /dev/null and now postgres installs OK. However I
hesitate to go further as this server is on a VPS. Could that be why the
perms were not set properly? I have been running this server for about 3
weeks just with a basic mail setup - Postfix/Courier/Procmail passing
all mail through Spamassassin on another server, so some of the obvious
spam I have been sending to /dev/null which seems to work. I am
unfamiliar with the deployment of VPS's, I just use them, so I assume
this should have been setup when the VPS was created.

Yes, the mp3s did play in stereo before. In any event, I rebooted and
while the machine was shutting down, I heard a pop sound from the left
speaker and upon reboot all is well.

I don't know what happened, but suspect that it was perhaps a module not
loading properly in the kernel.

I appreciate that rebooting is not the most elegant solution, nor even
the most practical, so this thread will be useful to keep just in case.
What would I be looking for in the output of

amixer | egrep '^( .*Left|[^ ])'

just so that I can keep this in mind for future reference if there is a
recurrence?

Thanks Florian.

That word 'pop' awoke something. I recall that some speakers have a
automatic volume adjustment whereby if they get a sudden loud burst,
they stop the sound until being powered down. So maybe you have these
kind of speakers? Are they 'powered' or hooked up to a reciever?

stunnel4 and Debian

2007-10-07 Thread Tom Allison

I'm trying to set up a new dbmail box which should only use stunnel4 for access.

I'm running into a number of problems with this set up and I'm not getting any
message back from various applications, which makes it kind of hard to manage.

First. /etc/init.d/dbmail start doesn't nothing.
No errors, no running applications. nothing.
And it doesn't seem to have an ENABLE=0 flags anywhere in the typical locations
(often seen in Debian).
And there's no logs generated at /var/log/dbmail/ -- the directory is there, but
no logs. Nothing on STDOUT, STDERR, or syslog either.

This is a big fat help!

Second. I'm trying to set this up using stunnel4.
I've followed the various directions and such to the best that make sense but I
keep getting the same sets of errors, depending on what I do with them.

When I start stunnel4 I get an error that I need to specify a pid= in my
stunnel.conf file. Well, there is one. It's default and it says
'pid=/stunnel.pid' which is confusing.
If I try to connect to the inetd defined port, I get lots of messages (debug is
on) and this is what the client sees:

Re: mdadm segfaults - failed upgrade to Lenny - drops to busybox/initramfs SOLVED

2007-10-07 Thread Andrew M.A. Cater
Following Martin's suggestion as to how to use grml

[Example instructions set out below for the clueless as to how to
recover/panicked people/those who need this in a hurry from finding
this as a desperate Google search]

grml will recognise an existing mdadm array if given

mdadm -A /dev/md0

Mounted the drive

mount -t ext3 /dev/md0 /mnt/

I couldn't get the chroot to work (couldn't find zsh) - so tar'red up
the two copies (there was an old copy around) of the home directories I
needed and used grml-network to set up the network card.

cd /mnt/home

tar -pcvf andyhome2.tar /home/amacater

scp copied the files across to a remote machine.

scp andyhome2.tar 192.168.1.102:/home/amacater/

scp andyhome.tar 192.168.1.102:/home/amacater/

an untar for both tar files in separate directories followed by rsync
-avz from one to the other and I had a home directory structure
containing files from both copies.

mkdir andyhome

mkdir andy2home

(Copy the two tar files to their respective directories then tar -xvf
*tar later)

cd andyhome/amacater

rsync -pavz ../andy2home/amacater/* .

If I'd thought, I'd have saved all my mail by tarring up
/var/spool/mail/amacater as a separate item - but
there's not much I've lost.

Hope this helps someone else in a jam at some point.

All the very best,

Having taken a quick look at the dependencies, I would think that you

  Regards,| http://users.icfo.es/Florian.Kulzer
Florian

Thanks for that Florian. I'd checked on Fedora 7's version of util-linux,
and the old schedutils tools are there. The version on Lenny is 2.12r-19.
I'll go for the later Sid version, and hope it installs ok.

I'm still trying to find out why Marcos's rtirq from the musix repo is not
being started. It appears to have something to do with, when it installs,
it creates a sysconfig directory in /etc, and puts rtirq in that, rather
than in /etc/default, which is where it should be. If Sid's util-linux
installs on Lenny ok, I think I'll install rtirq, which will create an
/etc/sysconfig directory, then make a symlink from /etc/default/rtirq
 pointing
to /etc/sysconfig/rtirq, and see if that resolves the problem with rtirq I
had on Etch, before I used chrt to change the priority of the soundcard to
90, which fixed the realtime problem on Etch.

I know rtirq isn't running on Etch because sysv-rc-conf shows runlevels
2,3,4,and 5 unchecked, and trying to run /etc/init.d/rtirq status, just
 segfaults, as does /etc/init.d/rtirq start.

I'll post back either way, as this may be usefull to someone wanting to get
 realtime working on Debian.

 Thanks for your help.

 Nigel.

Update as promised.

The Sid (unstable) version of util-linux installs ok on Lenny, and I now have
chrt in /usr/bin.

The problem with the rtrirq package that I got from the Musix repo not
starting, is either down to a problem with the package, or it wasn't being
installed correctly on Etch, and Lenny. I ended up with a start script for
rtirq in /etc/init.d, and the same start script in /etc/sysconfig (the
sysconfig directory had been created during the install of rtirq). I checked
in my Fedora 7 install, and in /etc/sysconfig the rtirq config script is very
small.

From a link posted on the LAU list (see below) I downloaded a tarball for
rtirq, unpacked it, deleted the start script from /etc/sysconfig, and pasted
the correct config script that was in the tarball into /etc/sysconfig, and
also renaming it, as it was named rtirq.conf, and the the start script is
looking for rtirq in /etc/sysconfig.
http://www.rncbc.org/jack/rtirq-20070101.tar.gz

Assuming you have one or two realtime kernels installed, the only other thing
necessary is to edit /etc/security/limits.conf, and add the following lines.

@audio  - rtprio  99
@audio  - nice  -10
@audio  - memlock  400

These lines are for the sake of jack. Open qjackctl, then settings. check the
realtime box, and set the realtime prio to 70.

A reboot with Lenny, starting jackd in qjackctl, and I'm now getting one xrun
every 58 mins.

Problem solved, but it took a bit of time.

Nigel.
