But I think I should point out the FreeBSD solution does more than let you avoid writing something in rc.local. Adding a snippet in rc.local will get your daemon up all right, but it provides no way to have your daemon shut down in an orderly fashion the way FreeBSD's /usr/local/etc/rc.d/ setup does. I've always thought this was the biggest shortcoming of BSD init vs. SysV init. -- BSD init only solves half the problem. OpenBSD figures that most things are fine getting the global SIGTERM at shutdown. Anything that requires handholding needs a snippet added to rc.shutdown. Unfortunately it only deals with Aptitude, and Dpkg, and there appears to be no way to put a hold on an individual package with Apt ( at least not on the Apt version on Fedora). I also posted this question to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Someone there suggested pinning, and having tried various incantations in /etc/apt/preferences, this one appears to work. Package: fltk Pin: version 1.1.7* Pin-Priority: 1001 The fltk version 1.1.7* is referring to fltk-1.1.7-1.fc5, which is the installed version of fltk, and installed using rpm -Uvh path to fltk package. I replaced the fltk-1.1.8-0.3.r5750.fc7 version with the fc5 version, as the fc7 version creates problems with ZynnAddSubFX. Ignore the rpm stuff as it refers to Fedora, but apart from that the pinning appears to be working ok. I ran an apt-get update, and no warning about pinning problems. Followed that with an apt-get dist-upgrade -s, and got no packages to be upgraded, which confirmed that the pinning was working. Opened Synaptic, and installed version of fltk was showing as 1.1.7-1.fc5, and available version of fltk is also showing as 1.1.7-1.fc5, which again showed that the pinning was working. Thanks again for your help with an Apt problem on Fedora, and btw, I still havn't had a reply to this problem I sent to the Fedora list. HPLIP problem communicating with HP OfficeJet 5510
I am running Debian Sid with a 2.6.10 kernel and an HP OfficeJet 5510 All-In-One printer attached through a USB port, using CUPS for all printing. Since updating my entire installation recently, I have not been able to communicate with the printer, although it was working previously. Apt and aptitude will read dpkg hold states. Daniel Hi Daniel. I'm sure that's true with Apt, or Aptitude on Debian, but doesn't work with Apt on Fedora. I havn't had to hold back packages on my Debian installs, and this is a specific problem with a version of fltk that comes with Fedora 7, and 8, and causes problems with ZynAddSubFX. Using the fltk version from FC5 resolves the problem. I've already posted this to the list, but these are the lines added to /etc/apt/preferences that have resolved the pinning problem. Package: fltk Pin: version 1.1.7* Pin-Priority: 1001 According to this no fltk versions later than 1.1.7* will be installed if later versions are available. In my case the 1.1.8* versions are causing the problem. Running apt-get dist-upgrade -s verifies that fltk is not going to be upgraded, so the pinning is working thank goodness, as this has been a bit of a performance trying to find the correct lines to enter in /etc/apt/preferences. Thanks to all who replied, even though this wasn't a Debian problem, although Apt is Debian, and I just happen to like using it on Fedora. Nigel. It doesn't include any more information than what is in this message (unless I'm missing something). Linux isn't complaining about any hardware and everything seems to work. I know that some IBMs come with nice software for user's to run, but usually there's a bios-based advanced diagnostics. If you get the service manual from IBM's website, you'll probably find the magic keystrokes (try holding down F1 while you power on) to get into the advanced diagnostics. If there is a hardware fault, it will give you an FRU number which you then look up in the service manual and it tells you what it is and what to do. Its usally quite detailed. I've been through the BIOS, but there are no diagnostics available there. I forgot, once you've got the regular BIOS diagnostics section, Ctrl-A or something will get you more advanced stuff. Its been a while. What is the problem you're having? Doug. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: Anyone using Debian on notebook?
Thank you all! Conclusion: Pros: - It's Debian! - It's Free! - Great environment for Programming (better than ssh to linux development style) - More open source softwares support Cons: - might harder to get your devices working. wifi, printer, dual display, iPod etc. - lost lots of OSX goodies (beautiful fonts, expose, widgets, spotlight, sleep mode etc.) - lost vendor's support On Dec 15, 2007 7:01 AM, Jose Luis Rivas Contreras [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: André César de Sá wrote: I've been using Debian on my Dell Latitude D520. The relevant bits: Received: from unknown (HELO horacrux) (...) Received: from kevin by horacrux with local (Exim 4.67) It appears that you are running your own mail server named 'horacrux' - my own mail servers would reject any messages from 'horacrux' as well because this is not a resolvable hostname: $ host horacrux Host horacrux not found: 3(NXDOMAIN) You need to properly configure your mail server to HELO as a valid host as a first step in delivering mail. Please post this to the list, otherwise it wont get seem. I am subscribed to many mailing lists. I can send and recieve from all but debian.org lists. Well debian.org was ok until the last few months. Done ;) This is how things go: a) mutt(sending)-exim-verizon/yahoo-ML server b) ML server-verizon/yahoo-exim-mutt(reading) Process a for debian now does not work but Process b still does. So what happends now is this: mutt(sending)-exim-verizon/yahoo-debian.org rejects mail but debian.org does not accept verizon/yahoo mail, verizon/yahoo notes the response and forwards the response back to my local server(horacrux) like this: debian.org reject is sent back-verizon/yahoo-exim-mutt(reading) At least that is what I understand. Have you updated your exim configuration to send as a valid DNS resolvable host name, as well as set up DNS for that host name? I think that is your problem, here. I have no problems sending email from quite a few hosts, using a similar path as you describe, but I have configured the local MTA on each box to send as valid DNS resolvable names: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo grep -r kokopelli /etc/exim4/ /etc/exim4/update-exim4.conf.conf:dc_readhost='kokopelli.pbandjelly.org' /etc/exim4/email-addresses:[EMAIL PROTECTED]: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ host kokopelli.pbandjelly.org kokopelli.pbandjelly.org is an alias for kokopelli.homeunix.org. kokopelli.homeunix.org has address 10.9.109.79 The above is my laptop. Re: startx gdm
Automatic startx should be as easy as adding it to .bash_profile (not .bashrc to not have it run for every xterm), but I didn't test it. Yes. Not only automatic startx, but the solution to all of life's problems should be as easy as adding it to .bash_profile. At any rate, I did solve getting my computer to autologin, with the help of http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=16348 It seems that editing /home/user/.bash_profile, and editing /etc/inittab, is necessary. Further, using rungetty rather than getty is also helpful, apparently. Briefly, for the autologin, in the /etc/inittab file, I changed the first line from: 1:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty1 to (note, my user is mark): 1:2345:respawn:/sbin/rungetty tty1 --autologin mark and, for both starting x, and, specifically, starting fluxbox as I've set it up, I added the following to .bash_profile: if [ -z $DISPLAY ] [ $(tty) == /dev/tty1 ]; then while [ 1 == 1 ] do startx /usr/bin/startfluxbox sleep 10 done fi Mark -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
