Carte video compatible etch (sans compilation driver propriétaire)

2007-12-15 Thread Bulot Grégory
Bonjour,

http://kmuto.jp/debian/hcl/

http://www.bulot-fr.com/materiel/video.html

Encode2CD.sh EncodeDVD2CD.shEncodeSon128.sh Encodev+.sh
Encode.sh EncodeDVD.sh EncodeDVDHight.sh EncodetoDVD.sh.

KERNEL=event[0-9]*, SYSFS{idVendor}=056a, NAME=input/%k,
SYMLINK=input/wacom%e
SYMLINK=input/wacom A+

par contre Alt+SysRq+k me ramene bien a kdm.

 * Alt-SysRq-0-9 = Determine le niveau de log de la console (log level)
 * Alt-SysRq-I Envoie SIGKILL à tous les processus (meme init)
 * Alt-SysRq-s (synchronise les disques durs)
 * Alt-SysRq-u (remonte les systèmes de fichiers en lecture seule)
 * Alt-SysRq-b (reboote le système)

(http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/reference/ch-tips.fr.html) ?

$ Encode.sh lefilm Bson 128 Bvid 900 Passe1  Avc aspect=4/3

Lefilm= nom du fichier d'origine.
( Je me suis

./configure --with-cards=hda-intel
make
make install

Tambien he probado poniendo comillas dobles .

how to redo networking on bootup

I think something is wrong with my system. It started a few weeks ago, when,
on a reboot, my NVIDIA driver didn't work, so X didn't start(or is it X
wouldn't start because I had no network..). I think somehow these are
related, but I don't know how.

anyway, I just changed DSL providers, and in rebooting to get it setup, I am
noticing that my network doesn't come up clean any more, now I have to
restart networking, then do ifup eth0 to get back on the network.
How can I get it back TO NORMAL..

Check out the gEDA package. It includes an PCB board

Or try KiCAD.
It is easier than gEDA because of the GUI that KiCAD uses.

2007-12-15 Thread Amogh Hooshdar
Thank you for response. But it did not help. I commented out all the
ip6 lines in /etc/hosts and then even rebooted the box.

Now see a sample output for aptitude update:-

# aptitude update

I observed it with wireshark and the DNS queries and responses are like this:-

DNS Standard query ftp.us.debian.org
DNS Standard query response [Malformed packet]
DNS Standrd query A ftp.us.debian.org
DNS Standard query response A 1.0.0.0

I'm sure that's a lot of it. But I think I should point out the

I've always thought this was the biggest shortcoming of BSD init vs.
SysV init. -- BSD init only solves half the problem.

OpenBSD figures that most things are fine getting the global SIGTERM at

restart networking, then do ifup eth0 to get back on the network.
How can I get it back TO NORMAL..

Give us your /etc/apt/sources.list

How do you normally configure your network? Do you use the standard
debian /etc/networking stuff or are you using some DTE network manager?
I would imagine that if your network is controlled by your DTE that it
wouldn't function if X didn't work. This is why I can only imagine
since I would never take that risk; without networking, how could I
email for help?

What error messages are you getting?

If X doesn't start, what do you get?

Since X will work on an isolated box, you don't need an external network
to run X. It may need the lo interface but since I've never run without
lo, I wouldn't know.

apt-cache show and aptitude show report different dependencies - Why?

2007-12-15 Thread Amogh Hooshdar
I always use the aptitude package manager. I never use the apt-get
package manager.

Today, I noticed that apt-cache show and aptitude show are reporting
different dependencies for the package:- linux-image-2.6-486. If you
see the aptitude output, it clearly shows:-

Depends: linux-image-2.6.22-3-486
Provides: linux-latest-modules-2.6.22-3-486

apt-cache output has two blocks. The first block correctly shows:-

Provides: linux-latest-modules-2.6.22-3-486
Depends: linux-image-2.6.22-3-486

but the second one shows:-

Provides: linux-latest-modules-2.6.22-2-486
Depends: linux-image-2.6.22-2-486

Why this difference? Why two blocks of output for the same package in
apt-cache show. I have included the full outputs of both the tools
below.

We recently ran into a similar problem. IPv6 has long been

to use Etch to download a Debian Testing CD from the torrent
because btdownloadcurses saw the bttracker.acc.umu.se

ever trying the A record.

bttracker.acc.umu.se now (seems to) always return the A
record before the record and btdownloadcurses works
once more.

FWIW, we do not have options ipv6 in resolv.conf, but I
don't see a way to say something like options no-ipv6.

 greetings Peter Werner

Thanks Peter for your reply, and the link. Unfortunately it only deals with
Aptitude, and Dpkg, and there appears to be no way to put a hold on an
individual package with Apt ( at least not on the Apt version on Fedora).

I also posted this question to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Someone there
suggested pinning, and having tried various incantations
in /etc/apt/preferences, this one appears to work.

Package: fltk
Pin: version 1.1.7*
Pin-Priority: 1001

The fltk version 1.1.7* is referring to fltk-1.1.7-1.fc5, which is the
installed version of fltk, and installed using rpm -Uvh path to fltk
package. I replaced the fltk-1.1.8-0.3.r5750.fc7 version with the fc5
version, as the fc7 version creates problems with ZynnAddSubFX.

Ignore the rpm stuff as it refers to Fedora, but apart from that the pinning
appears to be working ok.

I ran an apt-get update, and no warning about pinning problems. Followed that
with an apt-get dist-upgrade -s, and got no packages to be upgraded, which
confirmed that the pinning was working. Opened Synaptic, and installed
version of fltk was showing as 1.1.7-1.fc5, and available version of fltk is
also showing as 1.1.7-1.fc5, which again showed that the pinning was working.

Thanks again for your help with an Apt problem on Fedora, and btw, I still
havn't had a reply to this problem I sent to the Fedora list. They're
probably too occupied with Yum problems, or just didn't have an answer.

HPLIP problem communicating with HP OfficeJet 5510

2007-12-15 Thread Fred Yeadon
I am running Debian Sid with a 2.6.10 kernel and an HP OfficeJet 5510
All-In-One printer attached through a USB port, using CUPS for all
printing. Since updating my entire installation recently, I have not been
able to communicate with the printer, although it was working previously.
The problem exists whether I use the CUPS admin web-browser application, or
the HPLIP utilities. In web searches of the HPLIP web site and various
email forums, I have found information about previous similar problems in
HPLIP, but most are regarding old problems that have been fixed, and none of
the more recent suggestions have worked for me.

Here are the errors I see in /var/log/syslog.

I know that some IBMs come with nice software for user's to run, but
usually there's a bios-based advanced diagnostics. If you get the
service manual from IBM's website, you'll probably find the magic
keystrokes (try holding down F1 while you power on) to get into the
advanced diagnostics. If there is a hardware fault, it will give you
an FRU number which you then look up in the service manual and it tells
you what it is and what to do. Its usally quite detailed.

I've been through the BIOS, but there are no diagnostics available there.

Automatic startx should be as easy as adding it to .bash_profile (not

Hi Daniel. I'm sure that's true with Apt, or Aptitude on Debian, but doesn't
work with Apt on Fedora. I havn't had to hold back packages on my Debian
installs, and this is a specific problem with a version of fltk that comes
with Fedora 7, and 8, and causes problems with ZynAddSubFX. Using the fltk
version from FC5 resolves the problem.

I've already posted this to the list, but these are the lines added
to /etc/apt/preferences that have resolved the pinning problem.

Package: fltk
Pin: version 1.1.7*
Pin-Priority: 1001

According to this no fltk versions later than 1.1.7* will be installed if
later versions are available. In my case the 1.1.8* versions are causing the
problem. Running apt-get dist-upgrade -s verifies that fltk is not going to
be upgraded, so the pinning is working thank goodness, as this has been a bit
of a performance trying to find the correct lines to enter
in /etc/apt/preferences.

Thanks to all who replied, even though this wasn't a Debian problem, although
Apt is Debian, and I just happen to like using it on Fedora.

Nigel.

Currently running Debian Sarge, Etch, and Lenny, Kubuntu (Dapper), Archlinux,
Fedora 1,2,3,5,6,7, and 8, Slackware 10.0, and Gentoo.

btw. I still havn't received a reply for the problem from the Fedora list.
they're probably too occupied with Yum to be bothered with Apt.

CGI Scripts, Apache 2.2.3, and Debian 4.0 R1

2007-12-15 Thread Jon D. Irish
I have a clean install of Debian 4.0 R1 with Apache 2.2.3-4 installed. I can
not get cgi scripts to execute from the website. I have researched the Apache
site and tried both of the following:

1) Under apache2.conf, I added
Directory /var/www/cgi-bin
  Options +ExecCGI
  AddHandler cgi-script .cgi .pl
/Directory

2) Under httpd.conf, I added
#
# ScriptAlias: This controls which directories contain server scripts.
# ScriptAliases are essentially the same as Aliases, except that
# documents in the realname directory are treated as applications and
# run by the server when requested rather than as documents sent to the client.
# The same rules about trailing / apply to ScriptAlias directives as to
# Alias.
#
ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ /var/www/cgi-bin/
#
# /var/www/cgi-bin should be changed to whatever your ScriptAliased
# CGI directory exists, if you have that configured.
#
Directory /var/www/cgi-bin
AllowOverride None
Options Indexes Includes FollowSymLinks
Order deny,allow
Deny from all
Allow from 192.168.1
/Directory

Neither of these has allowed my cgi scripts to run. Can someone please tell me
what I am doing wrong?

Sincerely,
Jon

I know that some IBMs come with nice software for user's to run, but
usually there's a bios-based advanced diagnostics. If you get the
service manual from IBM's website, you'll probably find the magic
keystrokes (try holding down F1 while you power on) to get into the
advanced diagnostics. If there is a hardware fault, it will give you
an FRU number which you then look up in the service manual and it tells
you what it is and what to do. Its usally quite detailed.

I've been through the BIOS, but there are no diagnostics available there.

I forgot, once you've got the regular BIOS diagnostics section, Ctrl-A
or something will get you more advanced stuff.

Its been a while. What is the problem you're having?

Doug.

Re: Anyone using Debian on notebook?

2007-12-15 Thread js
Thank you all!

Conclusion:

Pros:
- It's Debian!
- It's Free!
- Great environment for Programming (better than ssh to linux development style)
- More open source softwares support

Cons:
- might harder to get your devices working. wifi, printer, dual
display, iPod etc.
- lost lots of OSX goodies (beautiful fonts, expose, widgets,
spotlight, sleep mode etc.)
- lost vendor's support

   - Intel Wireless system(simply can't install IPW3945)

I got it working easily... Be sure to have installed ipw3945d and have
 compiled with module-assistant the ipw3945-source ;-)

Would this be yourself? The relevant bits:

It appears that you are running your own mail server named 'horacrux' -
my own mail servers would reject any messages from 'horacrux' as well
because this is not a resolvable hostname:

 $ host horacrux
 Host horacrux not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)

You need to properly configure your mail server to HELO as a valid host
as a first step in delivering mail.

Please post this to the list, otherwise it wont get seem.
I am subscribed to many mailing lists. I can send and recieve from all
but debian.org lists. Well debian.org was ok until the last few months.

Done ;)

 This is how things go:

 a) mutt(sending)-exim-verizon/yahoo-ML server
 b) ML server-verizon/yahoo-exim-mutt(reading)

Process a for debian now does not work but Process b still does.

So what happends now is this:

 mutt(sending)-exim-verizon/yahoo-debian.org rejects mail

but debian.org does not accept verizon/yahoo mail,
 verizon/yahoo notes the response and
forwards the response back to my local server(horacrux) like this:

 debian.org reject is sent back-verizon/yahoo-exim-mutt(reading)

At least that is what I understand.

Have you updated your exim configuration to send as a valid DNS
resolvable host name, as well as set up DNS for that host name? I think
that is your problem, here.

I have no problems sending email from quite a few hosts, using a similar
path as you describe, but I have configured the local MTA on each box to
send as valid DNS resolvable names:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo grep -r kokopelli /etc/exim4/
/etc/exim4/update-exim4.conf.conf:dc_readhost='kokopelli.pbandjelly.org'
/etc/exim4/email-addresses:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ host kokopelli.pbandjelly.org
kokopelli.pbandjelly.org is an alias for kokopelli.homeunix.org.
kokopelli.homeunix.org has address 10.9.109.79

The above is my laptop. Hope that helps!

Re: startx gdm

2007-12-15 Thread Mark Grieveson
Automatic startx should be as easy as adding it to .bash_profile
(not .bashrc to not have it run for every xterm), but I didn't test
 it.

Yes. Not only automatic startx, but the solution to all of life's
problems should be as easy as adding it to .bash_profile.

At any rate, I did solve getting my computer to autologin, with the
help of http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=16348

It seems that editing /home/user/.bash_profile, and
editing /etc/inittab, is necessary. Further, using rungetty rather
than getty is also helpful, apparently.

Briefly, for the autologin, in the /etc/inittab file, I
changed the first line from:

1:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty1

to (note, my user is mark):

1:2345:respawn:/sbin/rungetty tty1 --autologin mark

and, for both starting x, and, specifically, starting
fluxbox as I've set it up, I added the following to .bash_profile:

if [ -z $DISPLAY ]  [ $(tty) == /dev/tty1 ]; then
while [ 1 == 1 ]
do
startx /usr/bin/startfluxbox
sleep 10
done
fi
