You are right. Here is the info I have. Still wish the wireless
keyboard and mouse would work.

deb-src ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ stable main

Well, presumably so, given the Google API. There's a commercial
product advertising for Windows users that seems to be getting good
reviews for Google Calendar, but I haven't tried it.

Does it happen with a different user?

Can you shut down X and run a CLI audio player?

Can you install another kernel version and try it with that kernel?

I'm just getting started with my new digital camera, and I've found
gthumb to be a pretty good place to begin. You can get it through the
standard repositories, and it should pull in all the necessary
libraries to communicate with your camera. There are doubtless also
KDE apps that do the same thing, if you prefer.

Seg faults on mplayer, xine, vlc, xmms and wine

2007-12-26 Thread Rico Secada
Hi.

I am running testing with kernel: 2.6.22-3-686.

For a couple of month I have experienced continuous segmentation faults
with Mplayer, Xine, VLC and XMMS. I get segmentation fault every time I
try to use them.

To be on the safe side I have diagnosed my memory, but have found no
errors.

Now, before I wipe my installation and revert back to stable, I would
like to know if perhaps I am missing something.

If I run strace on Mplayer, I get the following input/output error:

$ strace mplayer

munmap(0xb7f2f000, 92099) = 0
set_tid_address(0xb602c918) = 10033
sendto(-1241331424, umovestr: Input/output error
0xc, 3084759028, MSG_PROXY|MSG_EOR|MSG_DONTWAIT|MSG_CONFIRM|
MSG_NOSIGNAL|MSG_MORE|0xb602, NULL, 3215100320) = 0 futex
(0xbfa28990, 0x81 /* FUTEX_??? */, 1) = 0

Doing a strace on the other packages I get different errors.

$ strace xmms

lstat64("/etc/gtk/gtkrc.da.utf8", 0xbf83a4c4) = -1 ENOENT (No such file
or directory) lstat64("/etc/gtk/gtkrc.da.utf-8", 0xbf83a4c4) = -1
ENOENT (No such file or directory) lstat64("/etc/gtk/gtkrc.da_DK.utf8",
0xbf83a4c4) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) lstat64
("/etc/gtk/gtkrc.da_DK.utf-8", 0xbf83a4c4) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory) lstat64("/etc/gtk/gtkrc", 0xbf83a4c4) = -1 ENOENT (No such
file or directory)

Any advice?

Best regards.

Tunnel between two IPv6 islands in an IPv4 ocean?

2007-12-26 Thread Rick Thomas

What would be the "Debian way" to set up a tunnel between two routers
running Debian to connect two IPv6 islands in an otherwise IPv4 ocean?

To be a bit more specific:

There are two groups of us in my University who are experimenting
with IPv6. The rest of the University is entirely IPv4.

Each of these groups has gotten themselves a tunneled router
connection to the IPv6 backbone outside the University, and we can
communicate using IPv6 by going out to the backbone and back into the
University via these two tunnels.

But that seems overly cumbersome. It would be great if we could
connect the two groups directly with an IPv6 on IPv4 tunnel that
never leaves the University. If possible, I'd like to use two Debian
machines to do this. Does anybody know how/if it can be done?

Thanks!

Rick

how to create a debian package from an icon pack ?[simple rules file ]

2007-12-26 Thread Jabka Atu
I guess not many will ever need it but ...

So you downloaded your favorite icon pack and you to create a
KDE-icon-foo package.

if there will changes i will post them here :
http://bsh83.blogspot.com/2007/12/how-to-create-debian-package-from-icon.html
just remember to hold your icon pack inside a tar.gz (compress the dir)

the script (rules file ) i used :
#!/usr/bin/make -f
#
#
#This Rules script had been created by Boris Shtrasman and it is
released under the GPLv3 license
#to use it you should :
#1. download your favorite icon set.
#2. create a directory : kde-icon-"iconpackname"-"version"
#3. Using dh_make create a debian package :
# dh_make --f sourcefile from the directory with the name
kde-icon-whatever-version
#4. Edit control + changelog + dirs +copyrights
#5. copy this file inside debian/ directory.
#6. change the `package=kde-icons-nuovext` string to

I'm not sure about what you're looking for. However I'll suppose
you're asking about how to access the camera memory so you can upload
stuff from the camera's memory to your box...

If the camera is a mass storage compliant device, then there's no much
to do, it's automatically recognized, and you can mount it as any
other mass storage device, like memory keys, etc. Usually they come
under vfat FS, so you can try mounting under vfat... If not, then
maybe gphotofs can come handy. It's kind of a virtual FS through
fuse. I hope it helps...

you are correct. And I finally found, under the Debian menu ( that would be

was CHECKED. I unchecked it.
I run KDE, but... I guess some gnome apps are installed and executable.

That's a pretty good clue that your screensaver is *NOT* turned off...

DNS zone file management software?

2007-12-26 Thread Rick Thomas

Is there a debian supported DNS zone file management software package?

For example, Red Hat has a simple gui called redhat-config-bind .
I'm looking for a "debian way" equivalent.

If such a thing exists, is there a version that supports IPv6 addresses?

Thanks!

locked screen

2007-12-26 Thread Paul Cartwright
My login started with the locked screen again recently, and I'm not sure why.
The other login doesn't do that, you can do the CTRL-ALT-F8 to the other
login, and get right to the desktop. When you go from that one to mine (
CTRL-ALT-F7) OR you go away from the monitor for a while, it gets you to a
login screen with these options:
Leave Message- Switch User- Cancel - Unlock

I've never seen this screen on the other login, and they are setup identically
( by me). My screensaver is turned OFF, and it doesn't have a password for
the screensaver.
any clues?

It looks like the raw1394 module is no longer included in the newer
Debian kernels. (I don't use the stock kernels, so I don't know for
sure.) You might have to compile your own kernel to have the module
available; its source code is still included in the Debian kernel
sources.

Alternatively you can try to "modprobe firewire-core". This is the
module for the new "Juju" firewire stack; maybe Debian has switched to
that. I don't know if userland tools such as dvgrab work with the new
firewire stack already. According to the kernel documentation,
firewire-core "functionally replaces ieee1394, raw1394, and video1394".

Could you post your /etc/apt/sources.list and the contents of
/etc/debian_version ? I'm wondering if you maybe upgraded to etch by
accident (which could have happened if you listed "stable" instead of
"sarge" in sources.list).

It almost certainly would work fine. Not many things depend on a
particular kernel version. Applications talk to libc, not the kernel.

Or go to kernel.org and get the sources and use kernel-package to build
your own inside the packaging system, or else just use the Debian source

The Debian way would be to get the sources from kernel.org, configure
them and then use make-kpkg to create Debian packages, but:

1. you have to be able to configure the kernel

2. you won't be getting any debian patches and security upgrades.

I have ASUS P5N-E SLI NVIDIA motherboard, Intel Core 2 Duo CPU and MSI
nVidia NX7600GT videocard.

When I use nvidia driver, the X Window freeze and I can only to reset my
PC box.

I search for solution and find here advices, but not the solution:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=58498

I did the following from there:
boot the system with pci=nommconf idle=poll maxcpus=1 kernel parameters
I edit the grub/menu.lst like:
# kopt=root=/dev/md2 ro pci=nommconf idle=poll maxcpus=1

Is it OK?
I don't know how to make certain that these parameters are set up indeed?

I edit xorg.conf like in the Section "Device":
Option "NvAGP" "0"
to see if this eliminates the instability, but did not.

So, my system crash frequently. I hope so that I can somehow to solve
this problem.

You are aware that Debian Stable kernels are continuously updated with
security patches, yes? Is there other functionality you need in later
kernels?

> What can I to do to get and install subsequent kernel on Etch

I can think of four ways to have access to later kernels:

  - Upgrade to Testing/Lenny, though I'm not sure what kernels they
offer.

  - Multi-boot/chroot lenny/sid in/alongside an etch system.

  - Run a hybrid system, etch with lenny/sid(?) apps in parallel. Not
recommended for noobs, and I'm not sure it's possible with
something as fundamental as the kernel.

  - Go to kernel.org and get the sources and build your own outside
the packaging system. This is pretty easy to do, but moves you
out of the mainstream. You'll be doing it by hand from now on.

libsane-extras: epson perfection 4490 PHOTO doesn't work on amd64

2007-12-26 Thread Markus Grunwald
Hello,

After making sure that the epson 4490 photo is supported by linux (debian
package libsane-extras, epkowa backend) I bought this fine scanner. Works like
a charm on ... you know ;)

But on my debian lenny tp61 (Linux haktar 2.6.22.5gru #4 SMP Sun Nov 18
17:58:05 CET 2007 x86_64 GNU/Linux) with 64 bit linux, I can't get the scanner
to work. I followed the instructions in
/usr/share/doc/libsane-extras/README.Debian, added myself to the scanner group
and tried scanimage -L, but the scanner didn't appear.

lsusb shows the scanner:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/lib$ lsusb | grep -i epson
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 04b8:0119 Seiko Epson Corp. Perfection 4490 Photo

lshal shows something about the scanner, too, mainly that the device is located
at /dev/bus/usb/002/003

I straced scanimage but didn't find anything special. Maybe I overlook
something. All I see is that the firmware, located in
/usr/share/iscan/esfw54.bin isn't touched. Hmm

I tried installing the packages from
http://www.avasys.jp/english/linux_e/dl_scan.html without success. I tried to
compile the sources, but the frontend will compile only for IA32.

As you can imagine, google didn't help me, neither. So I am out of ideas and
have to double boot for the first time since almost 4 years. Have to get used
to windows again :(

I hope that you can help me
