Then threads like this would mean that you would probably not
want to subscribe to the mailing list. Also rampant quoting, ling isgs,
spam on the list (or so I am told) -- all kinda overwhelm the Face
 header.

Debian does not send out mail with face headers or large
 signatures. People do.

Nice that this problem is solved. But I do not understand why so many
use "xhost" in a insecure way instead of correctly setting DISPLAY and
XAUTHORITY (or using "xauth" or "sux" and so on), as clearly explained in

/usr/share/doc/xfree86-common/FAQ.gz
section "How do I run an X client as root when the X session is run by a user?"

(this is the placement in sarge, I have not checked where the FAQ is now)

Hey,

The raid subsystem writes headers to the disks themselves which
include a uuid array identifier
and a prefered device number (eg 0 for
md0). It uses this to gather array members and then presents the array
as /dev/md0.
This means, as Doug said, that you can put the disks back in any order, on
any controller ( or over a network - check 'write-mostly' ) and
the resultant block devices (eg /dev/sda) are in the search path (check
mdadm.conf) the array will build.
So long as there aren't two or more arrays requesting the same dev number
(eg for md0) then each should get their preference.

The array itself does have a uuid (check `mdadm --detail /dev/md0|grep
UUID`), but I have never tried using it as the boot argument.

cheers,
Owen.

n.b. I'm on a windows comp at the moment so take above as all 'IIRC'.

Yes, I had done that.

This was the missing piece! I was missing the user name.
I actually included this in ip-up.local and it worked.
Now the windows appear. Thank you!

The only remaining problem is that pppstatus somehow seems to have lost
access to the ppp link. It says the link is not connected/off.
This does not happen if ip-up.local is not present/run and I run
pppstatus manually from a user-level konsole.

Any ideas out there? anyone?

If you want to make one route work more than the other, you can assign
weights to the routes right after each dev entry in the route statement
(i.e., "ip route ... dev eth0 weight 2 ... dev eth0 weight 1", this
would send twice as many connections out the first route as the second
route). Remember that if you do not use the 'equalize' modifier to the
route statement, you get traffic broken up across the links on a per
session basis. If using the 'equalize' parameter, it will be broken
across the links on a per packet basis.

Citation from

   Linkname: Routing for multiple uplinks/providers
URL: http://lartc.org/howto/lartc.rpdb.multiple-links.html

The weight parameters can be tweaked to favor one provider over the other.

Note that balancing will not be perfect, as it is route based, and routes are
cached. This
means that routes to often-used sites will always be over the same provider.

Furthermore, if you really want to do this, you probably also want to look at
Julian
Anastasov's patches at http://www.ssi.bg/~ja/#routes , Julian's route patch
page. They
will make things nicer to work with.

Doesn't matter. The raid subsystem will search all disks for raid
members irrespective of /dev name when it reassembles the raid on boot.
/dev/md0 will always be /dev/md0 and not /dev/md3 or something.

I use vlc and it just works.

Since some libs (dvdlibwhatever) are in debian-multimedia but they can't
be listed as dependancies, they are listed as recommends.

Add debian-multimedia.org to your sources.list, update, install the d-m
keyring package and update again, then browse aptitude to vlc (or
whatever) and see what is now recommended.

My suggestion is that the mailing list manager only allow posts from
email address (after checking for suspicious headers and other spam
filters that it already does) which are contained in a whitelist
database. This database would be populated automatically by the
subscription handshaking process or by an identical handshaking process
to be added only to the white-list. Remember the email that the
listmanager sent to you saying something like "someone sent an email
from this email address requesting that this email address be added to
the list of recipients of the debian-user mailing list. If you with
this to be the case, reply to this message leaving the subject line
intact".

The same kind of handshaking, changing a request for subscription to a
request for permission to post to any public debian mailing list, would
put off spam sites on two fronts:

1. The spam site would have to arrange to actually receive mail
back and respond to it appropriatly complete the handshaking.

2. If a registered poster (member of the whitelist) sends spam,
they get a query or warning (which could be automated) and the spam is
held in escrow (not sent to the list) until this is resolved. If it is
not resoved, or if the spam is repeated, a final notice of termination
is sent and the email address is removed from the white list. If they
try to rejoin the whitelist and there is an unresolved spam issue, then
the initial query warning is sent instead and the issue must be resoved
before they are reinstated.

No, not what I mean at all.

> [I get angry against spammers, but I would rather rely on my spam filter

> for people to post. ]

Agreed. I propose a protocol to get onto the whitelist and to handle
the whitelist membership. Once someone is a member in good standing,
they can send.

To cope with the sending from random sites (e.g. internet cafes), it
would get more interesting but only if the person's email ISP doesn't
have a web-mail service.

Since such webmail services require the user to enter a password (and
generally don't have facilities for one-time passwords), perhaps a OTP
protocol for the mailing lists could be used. Thus:

1. a member of the whitelist requests the list-manager to email a
set of one-time passwords for use when at non-whitelist (or even
blacklist?) ISPs (e.g internet cafe).

2. member sends email to list from non-whitelist email but includes
their normal email address and the OTP on the subject line (in case the
location where you are sending doesn't let you just set an arbitrary
header).

3. the list-manager allows any email from a member if it includes a
OTP that was issued to them. If instead all users were issued OTPs from
a single name-space, then each OTP would be very long and more prone to
typos (i.e. they'd look like MD5 sums rather than a login password).

4. OTPs are of course one-time only so the list manager would have
to handle the maintance of the OTPs.

5. If a member uses an OTP to actually send spam, then the same
protocol as (2) above would be followed.

Doug.

Well, the Face header is one long unwrapped line and it is gibberish in
mutt. Luckily, there's "ignore Face" in my ~/.muttrc, but I still have
to download it. Not a big deal right now.

However, if we go with the question "if everybody did it", then what
proportion of bandwidth for debian list would be taken up with "Face"
headers. Would this be significant for someone downloading over a slow
(or very slow) link. Right now I'm on dialup at about 2 KB/s and its
$9.99 per month for unlimited time. What if I was on a sailboat and/or
in northern Canada (outside of a community with a sat ground station) on
either an M-sat box (?2400 baud) or on HF (shorwave) at 300 baud (or
less) and perhaps paying per KB?

How does this mesh with, for example, debian's thought-paradigms for
deciding if something is free. e.g. the desert-island paradigm where
you can't be required to send in a license fee. Well, the desert island
will only have M-sat or HF (well, I suppose you may have a meridian
phone, but I think its limited to 9600 too).

Just a thought.

Explore kicker's dcop functions by issuing "dcop kicker" from a konsole.

using UUID's for a raid1 in /etc/fstab instead of /dev/md0

2008-04-08 Thread Mitchell Laks
Hi,

Someone recently talked about using
ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid

to figure out the correct UUID to put into /etc/fstab
for hard drives.

I have /home on a raid1 /dev/md0 which is composed of two drive partitions
/dev/sda1
/dev/sdb1

Now in /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf
I have:
ARRAY /dev/md0 level=raid1 num-devices=2
UUID=3cfd16a0:6eaa64dd:0dfcf1b5:2690c9eb

Now, I thought to try that UUID, but when I tried that
and put the line
/etc/fstab
using

http://linuxbasics.org/tutorials/during/uuid_naming?rev=1207514451

thus
UUID=3cfd16a0:6eaa64dd:0dfcf1b5:2690c9eb  /home ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro

It was a real bust and dropped me into control d boot land. I then fixed it
/etc/fstab back to /dev/md0 and all was ok.

So that must be the UUID for the individual /dev/sda1 and /dev/sdb1.

What is the UUID for the raid1 itself?

Thanks.

my understanding is that 2/3 will go via .2 and 1/3 will go via .1

try some thing like

for x in ($seq 1 20)
do
ip r g 1.1.2.$x
done

it should show you the route path taken and 33% should be via .1 and 66%
via .2

Yes. Wou were lucky. Sometimes when /boot is full it silently
corrupts the initramfs without any error message. You probably
need to make room in /boot, perhaps by deleting an old unused
kernel.

And that was my 2nd guess, but I have never had a full /boot so I can only
read the place where it errored, which was with the modules unpacking.

you can do a df -h /boot to test. most people put /boot on / if they are
not running raid or LVM or have some other reason to hang it alone. If
/boot is not on it's own partition, look at a full /

everything looks fine, right ?

$ df -h /boot

/dev/hdb6 228M 49M 168M 23% /boot

thx

Wrong!

two things:

One: do this: df -h /

it is just easier to read.

Two: the first line of the report:

Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on

/dev/mapper/Debian-root 264854 255254 0
100% /

Shows you have used 100% of / (root)

the reason that it shows 1K-blocks 264854 but only shows 255254 used and
says it is full is because 5% by default is reserved for user root.

is your /home on / or it's own partition? If it is on /, time to cut
down your collection of what-ever-you-downloaded (just guessing). you
could have a run-a-way log filling up your space.

time to do some detective work and find out what is filling up your / space.

Can you recover the configuration file of Cups for that installation,
e.g., a backup?

Regards,

Bernardo,

Thanks for replying. Cups is set up correctly. Cups reports the job as
printed.

No, I can't restore the config, but I have deleted it and re-added the
printer with both localhost:631 and with the gnome-cups-manager to no avail.

I have re-installed ubuntu 7.10 (I needed to print) and filed a bug
report with ubuntu 8.04.

IF (big if) this is a bug, it has to have something to do with the
security patches just released as stable is now unusable by me also.

The only other thing I can think of is my printserver (Hawking
Technology HPS1P) is just a little flaky, allowing win to print
(different code) but not the newest Lin. Nothing else makes sense,
nobody else is reporting an issue (I could be the only Linux user using
a Samsung ML1430 w/HPS1P printserver).

So far, the bug workers have not asked for more details.

well, that's just plain frustrating. It's got me worried because my
xen setup is working great in etch... might have to leave it there for
a while.

ip route weight stupid question

2008-04-08 Thread Stuart Gall
Hello,
SO I have scoured the internet, the man pages, groups. I just cant find
a definitive answer.

weight NUMBER - is a weight for this element of a multi-
path route reflecting its relative bandwidth or quality.

So more weight = better quality = preferred

e.g.
ip route add default scope global nexthop via x.x.x.1 dev eth0 weight 1
nexthop via x.x.x.2 dev eth0 weight 2

Does a higher weight mean that the route will be used more or used less ?

TIA

Maybe there's a new sub-arch, and 686 is more specific?

I think you are using the wrong fingerprint.

Try this:
gpg --keyserver subkeys.pgp.net --recv-keys 9FF9A76D

Apparently they work in a round robin fashion so they should eventually
propagate to each other.

I also get the odd failure, i.e. try this:

gpg --keyserver subkeys.pgp.net --recv-keys C02440B8

Edit /etc/mod*? to order soundcards (dsp0,dsp1...)

2008-04-08 Thread k bah
Debian Etch running 2.6.18-4-486

I have a via onboard soundcard (snd_via82xx) and sometimes I plug my usb phone
(snd_usb_audio). I use alsa, mostly under KDE. The thing is sometimes I forget
to unplug the usb device, and when the pc reboots, the usb soundcard is
detected first, and all apps (KDE apps, xmms, mozilla) see it as the
first/default soundcard.
In which files under /etc/mod* should I put something like this:

 "alias snd-card-0 snd_via82xx"

 ?

Please tell the file and the correct line to add.

 thanks

Upgrading from linux-image-2.6.18-686 to linux-image-2.6.24-686 breaks on AMD Geode LX CPU

2008-04-08 Thread Paul Richards
Hi,
I recently upgraded from etch to lenny and in the process my kernel
was upgraded from linux-image-2.6.18-686 to linux-image-2.6.24-686.
This new kernel crashes immediately after being uncompressed on boot,
and I have been forced to use the "486" build of the kernel if I want
2.6.24.

This AMD Geode LX processor has always executed 686 kernels in the
past. Have I previously just been lucky or is this a bug in 2.6.24?

This was the only problem I encountered during the etch to lenny
upgrade, so congratulations to everyone involved!

Adding entries to kicker from commandline

2008-04-08 Thread Brian McKee

Hi All

I'd like to add a shortcut/alias/launchthingy to the panel on a KDE
desktop from the command line.

I've created a .desktop file, dragged it into the kicker panel and did a
'find' on it - it showed up in .kde/share/apps/kicker/ which seemed to
make sense. But, when I copy that .desktop file to another machine in
the same location - it doesn't show up in the panel - even after logging
in and out. What am I doing wrong?

Comments appreciated,

Brian

Not necessarily. Take something like 'reportbug installation-reports'.
[This is not a user mailing list, but a mailing list from debian,
nevertheless.]

A little google [1] on the list archives reveals that apparently
greylisting is implemented on lists.debian.org.

The fact that we still get spam just demonstrates, that greylisting (or
any other measure) is not perfect at fighting spam.

Yes. But actually I pasted the interfaces file from when Dom0 was
running as the gateway. Normally the eth1:1 and eth0 auto lines are
commented out. To explain eth1:0 and eth1:1, there was a time where I
was bouncing between this machine being the router and a wireless router
being the router. Stupid building practices in the house I am renting.
Every time I swapped between those two IPs I'd have to reconfigure all
my machines to look for the Squid proxy in a new location. Normally
after my wife got frustrated that the proxy disappeared. So in the name
of marital bliss I decided to just leave the machine on .21 permanently
and alias .1 to it whenever it is acting as the router.

I have done that. I get anything from the bridge getting the IP to
nothing having the IP to no bridge/vif/veths at all. At this point I'm
going to uninstall all the packages and start over. However since I
know how to get it working thanks to my test on my laptop I'll just
duplicate that setup. Really though, testing is a tad flubbed.

Hugo,

I understand the "find" command and the results that it returns. But
I am unable to locate any mention of the "root" command having a
"FILE=" option.

So, did you modify Grub to make the "root" command have a FILE=

Right. FIND saves where it found the file and root with FILE= uses
that saved info. So I don't have to specify absolute locations. I can
send the diff if you tell me where.

i'll remember this one! learned something nifty again.

OK, I have 80 pin cables now, bootup no longer complains.

i've acctually never used mplayer from debian repos. mplayer automaticaly
depends on libraries it needs. however i think that debian cannot include
win32 codecs and libdvdcss because of patents or something like this. so it
may have problem cracking the dvd titles.

you don't have to mount the device. mplayer(to be correct libdvdread) accesses
dvd as device in /dev/dvd(or anything specified using -dvd-device) because it
needs access to the specified sectors, not just a filesystem, which you get,
when you mount it.

I see. I was unclear as to exactly what you wanted here. So far as I
know, the intel driver ignores the Modes lines and goes with what it
detects unless you tell it otherwise. There is an option you can set
that tells it to follow the MOdes, though I can't for the life of me
find it at the moment (sorry).

What output do you get from xrandr?

I receive answers about using labels with the partitions so, I
labeled the partitions and updated /etc/fstab. This is how things
now look:

IDE #1 Partition Label Mount Point
1 / /
2 swap1 swap file
3 /usr/usr

IDE #2 Partition Label Mount Point

0 2
LABEL=/var/mail /var/mail   ext3defaults

LABEL=swap1 noneswapsw

Now the partitions and mount points get assigned correctly no matter
which order the drives are assigned.
The remaining problem is with the GRUB and the kernel. It was
suggested that a LABEL specification be placed in the
/boot/grub/menu.1st entry so that:

# kopt=root=/dev/hda1 becomes
# kopt=root=LABEL=/
Using a LABEL in the Grub menu does not work because the kernel get
confused:

1. If kopt=root=/dev/hda1 and the disk order changes to make
the boot disk be /dev/hde, the boot process stops and drops
into a prompt. I can unmount /boot, mount /boot on the
correct drive, give a CTL-D to the prompt, and the system
would continue to boot.
2. If kopt=root=LABEL=/, the boot process will stop and drop
into a prompt WITHOUT /boot being mounted. I can mount
/boot on the correct drive, give a CTL-D to the prompt,
and the system will continue to boot.
No where have I been able to find any documentation that shows that
the Kernel boot command root= can have a LABEL specified.

# kopt=root=LABEL=wd80_0jd-60.05 ro noapic vga=791 apm=on ddcon=1

WFM

but you are still stuck with the GRUB root command, which does not
accept a label.

So I changed grub (0.97-29) to accept this:

find/ST380011A.03
rootFILE=/ST380011A.03

and then where he finds file ST380011A.03 that is where the root will
be.

Now I have a truly LABEL driven system and the drive devices can be
wherever they are and I don't care...

Hugo

So, how do I make the kernel consistently detect and assign the
disks in the correct order? Someone suggested the problem lies with
UDEV and the parallel hardware detection process.

Hugo,

I understand the "find" command and the results that it returns. But
I am unable to locate any mention of the "root" command having a
"FILE=" option.

So, did you modify Grub to make the "root" command have a FILE=
parameter?

Right. FIND saves where it found the file and root with FILE= uses that
saved info. So I don't have to specify absolute locations. I can send
the diff if you tell me where.

The latest Sid i386 grub is 0.97-35.

I tried the patch and it fits.

Hugo

PS In grub2 you supposedly can do what the patch does with a script. But
I was unsuccessful in my grub2 install attempt so I gave up :-(

You only need to do : apt-get install xorg and apt-get install 'de' ,
as root, where 'de' will be the desktop environment or window manager
you want, e.g. i want kde so i will do apt-get install xorg and
apt-get install kde .

Then you must start x and your de/wm so if you have installed kde or gnome run:
/etc/init.d/kdm start or /etc/init.d/gdm start respectively as root
and if you have installed a simple wm put into your .xinitrc that
line:
exec 'wm'
where 'wm' will be the window manager you have installed, e.g.
exec fluxbox
and then you can run startx as a simple user.
Hope i helped you.

Unfortunately I do *NOT* want it detecting this "stuff". As I said, I have
2 computers. Both are using 17" CRTs (4:3). The section you quoted was
added after my initial configuration and one used 1152x864 and the other used
1280x768. On both, I have only 1 resolution. I'm unable to use the
C-A-plus/minus to change from one resolution to another. The resolutions
listed in the display subsection is the ones I want to beable to use on both
machines in the listed order.

I looked, but didn't see much. I saw mode lines for several resolutions on
the one that is doing 1280x768. I did not see 1152x864 on that one. I also
enabled modedebug in the video driver just to see what it says.

Should I send the xlog (if so, /w or w/o modedebug)?

If I understand you correctly, mplayer is entirely self contained, and
when the package is installed it brings in everying needed to play DVDs.

> ... the mplayer development is very fast. they release versions once a
> year or so but the svn version is constantly under development with
> new features and bugfixes.

The mplayer I have installed is:

  mplayer/etch upgradeable from 1.0~rc1-12etch1 to
1:1.0-rc1svn20070225-0.3etch1

  In my sources.list:
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org etch main

  $ aptitude upgrade mplayer-1:1.0-rclsvn20070225-0.3etch1
  ...
The following packages have been kept back:
mplayer
0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not
  upgraded.

So, I should be able to pass an empty URI to the mplayer command and it
automatically looks for a title to unencrypt from whichever DVD drive
happens to be mounted.

I was able to find my problem. In /dev, there is a symlink from
/dev/dvd3 to hdc, but the defalt mplayer configuration looks for
/dev/dvd. I put a line in ~/.mplayer/config that points instead to dvd3,
and it now works.

Thanks for your patience.

The releases may not be as often as some other distros but when debian
says 'stable' it means it.
For reference I use testing for my mythtv box but stable on my fileserver
(or at least did before they became one).
The options of unstable (sid) -> testing (lenny) -> stable (etch) can be
summed up as:
-> Bleeding Edge (latest and greatest, but has a highy risk of breaking)
-> Forefront (may break, but shouldn't)
-> Vanguarde (if it breaks, it is probably a case of PEBKAC)

Check http://www.us.debian.org/releases for details. There there are links
to the security team FAQ
which describes their approach to security in the various releases.

According this[0] blog posting you can access iDisk via WebDAV
protocol. There are several WebDAV clients in Debian Repositories. My
favorite is "cadaver".

Or just use Gnome to access your online disk.

Ok, I spoke too soon. If I switch to Serial (instead of USB) then
ttyUSB0 works. pilot does not (it points to ttyUSB1, which is the
debugger port) and I cannot use usb:, which is a shame since that
seems to be the best option as far as Just Working.

On another note, I have been using 2.6.24 for some time and this just
started happening. So unless a recent upgrade of something else
caused this weird behavior I have no idea where it's coming from.

Interesting. After loading that I get /dev/ttyUSB nodes and
/dev/pilot. pilot-link can successfully talk to it using "-p usb:"
but gpilotd cannot -- in fact it cannot seem to talk to it no matter
what device I use (ttyUSB0, ttyUSB1, pilot, usb:).

Just wanted to add my few cents in. I am currently working on getting a
low foot print Debian installed in the Asus Eepc for an in house erp/
workflow solution. Needs are usual office stuff, chatting (what is
present on the device default basically) but using debian instead.

Will be posting the same some where online, will send the link once
through (~total 1 month I expect)

The current system (Xandros) leaves only ~1.3GB for the user on the 4G
device.

(for the curious, I do plan on using something like runit instead of
init, amongst some other ideas .. was wondering if anybody has tips..)

Not got into the installation of the pc phase yet, But from what I saw,
it should not be too hard.

How is the experience? Would a $400 budget laptop from Acer or somebody
be a better choice? (Assume I can't use a Macbook Air, or other
high-end ultra portable. For whatever reasons.)

Experience:
Awesome, Super, Great, Wonderful!!

& its quick (and light)

some users who swore to use only XP, are now willing to switch.
:)

Is the SSD on the basic/original model adequate?

Any other issues, beside the obvious?

Just on design issue, the mouse buttons on the track ball are on a
single unit. So it is not immediately obvious, that the system has two
buttons to the end user.

Comes with Xandros.

some issue, I have a usb cdma wireless internet device, which works with
wvdial/ pon etc.

However these were not installed. I could find aptitude on it so it
seems possible -- but the repo doesnt seem to be setup

Planet.debian today - add a 16MB USB stick to boot from and install
Debian over wireless. Easiest install ever, apparently.

Entirely up to you. Some people find that the keyboard is too small: if
you were going to use it for web browsing, you might find the display
too small. If you want a text only dev box that you can carry on the
train and afford to replace / a terminal to carry round computer racks /
a quick and dirty email and Skype machine ... it's your call.

4G is good - it's possible that Asus will be bringing out a larger model
later in the year. A friend uses his with an external hard drive the
size of a pack of playing cards.

Folks:

A few days ago my Palm (Tungsten T) was syncing just fine using
gnome-pilot, and today it simply will not. I've tried a myriad of
things, from rebooting Linux to soft resetting the device to poking

I *think* I did an aptitude upgrade recently, but I cannot recall. I
*know* I did on my laptop, and it fails there too. (Both are running
Lenny.)

If I install Palm Desktop on Windows on my desktop (dual-boot) it
syncs fine, so all of the hardware appears to be okay. dmesg/syslog
don't show anything out of the ordinary, I just don't get a
/dev/ttyUSB* node. usbserial isn't loaded into the kernel either,
which makes me think that the root cause is the kernel failing to
properly identify what the device is. lsusb shows all of the device
information as I'd expect.

The Palm just sits on the HotSync screen, presumably waiting for the
computer to talk to it. dmesg shows a connect when I start the sync,
and a disconnect when I cancel, as expected.

I've attached various pieces of log files:

dmesg.txt - Two connect/disconnects showing in dmesg.
lsusb.txt - `lsusb -v` trimmed to show only the Palm.
udevmonitor.txt - One connect/disconnect while running udevmonitor.

Tips are very appreciated; I have a few files I need to install on it soon.

I'm having problems syncing my Palm TX. I started using kernel 2.6.24
(under Etch), and I see that the 'visor' module is no longer loaded
automatically when I hit the hotsync button.

I load it manually using "modprobe visor" , yet no communication happens.

My only advice would be to manually load visor, since your dmesg.txt
doesn't show it being loaded.

I tried setting mysql.default_host in the [MySQL] section
of /etc/php4/apache2/php.ini (I am using apache2), but
that didn't work.
Running dpkg --configure -a after the change brings up the
dialog mentioned earlier. I select "Create". It asks me
for the root password of the MySQL database, and it comes
back with:
--cut here-
Setting up phpbb2-conf-mysql (2.0.21-7) ...
You need to have mysql-server installed if you want the MySQL
database to be hosted locally. Aborting.
Postinstallation of phpbb2-conf-mysql failed. Run
`dpkg --configure -a' to retry
dpkg: error processing phpbb2-conf-mysql (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

It still thinks I want the MySQL database to be installed
locally, which of course I don't.
