 Pire wicd

/usr/lib/nss/libnssdbm3.so

*NTFS-fs warning (device sda5): ntfs_setattr(): Changes in user/group/mode

Hola Hernan:
*mount -t ntfs /dev/sda5 /mnt/windows -o user

Verdade cara, me desculpe

(caso desejar deixar o Dual Boot)

comando no terminal

# glxinfo |grep direct rendering
tem que aparecer
direct rendering: Yes

bibliotecas, instalando com apt-get install ocuparia uns 30 MB o
onde fica o executável final gerado pelo make?

Problem with LVM

2008-05-09 Thread Gilles Guiot

Hello Everybody

I have two raid 1 arrays on a Dell PowerEdge 2950,
1) 2*500 Go
2) 2*750 Go

I need to use LVM, to create a LV on the second raid array, in which i
will afterwards incorporate the first raid array. I have the latest
debian distro installed, with kernel updates, and LVM2 is installed. For
political (indeed) reasons, we can't use the raid 5..

and there is a partition using the whole second disk (ie raid array),
it is sdb 1
I encounter my first problem when typing pvcreate /dev/sdb1. ( the
partition of the second raid array) I get the message :

device /dev/sdb1 not found or ignored by filtering
I checked /etc/lvm/lvm.conf, and I commented out the line about the filter.
After a reboot, no more luck. I tried to circumvent the problem by
booting with an ubuntu CD, but i get the same error message.
Could anybody tip me about what's wrong and more importantly suggest
solutions to me ? :-)

Thanks a lot in advance.

You could use the whole disk with pvcreate /dev/sdb (sdb without partition

What's the wishlist? To make Adobe give us Photoshop and Photoshop
 Elements under a free license?

No, to make the programs available under Linux. Lots of proprietary
software is available for Linux. Google Earth, Opera, Skype, the list
goes on. There is no contradiction between a FOSS OS and proprietary
applications.

Personally, that's all that that's enough for me. I don't like
non-free software. This Intel wireless firmware blob on my system is
 giving me a rash. :-(

I understand that many people use Linux because of the freedom it
brings us. Personally, I don't. I use Linux because it is the most
stable and secure OS available in my opinion. The fact freedom factor
is just a bonus for me. I would very happily pay for Linux had that
been the situation. And I am very happy to pay for quality
applications. Photoshop is a very high quality application and I
happily will pay for it when it becomes available for Linux.

In this case, I would go with Debian/Stable and use a backport for the

However I'm not keen on Ubuntu as I find some of their

Yes. And of course, even if the mainboard would support Hardware

If i try it here on my Etch, and r to install maxima, it pull in a new

So I can not believe it, you switch only for installing to unstable.

If, however, these workstations are e.g. graphic-design workstations

afaiu m-a stores all the entries in some file (or dir) so adding

The problem may be quite trivial in the languages you mention as far as
the mechanics of reading of lines from a file are concerned. However,
the experiments under question (for which I am writing the code) involve
reading large number of files which may be huge in size (thousands of
lines and many numbers on each line in each file). For that, I very much
doubt languages like Perl or Python are going to outperform C or C++ in
 efficiency.

Most of the time will be taken up by disk IO, and (in Python, at
least) the IO routines are written in C.

So if all this particular app does is read in text and write out
binary, Python (and Perl, if it's IO routines are written in C)
would have been the better choice.

Had I been sure to get the same efficiency with Perl or bash or Python
(awk, sed, cut, and so on ... ), I would have taken that route.

Like they say, right tool for the right job

But with all the time taken to figure out how to write the program,
the Perl/python program would have completed long before the C++
app, even if it took 10x longer.

Remember, there's developer scale as well as execution scale.

OpenBSD apparantly has better i386 hardware support than NetBSD.
OpenBSD -current, unlike debian-sid, is never supposed to break (Theo
says that anybody who breaks -current gets beaten severely). -current
is where all the development happens. Devs work on their own boxes
runing -current and when their test procedures are finished, committ it
to -current. -current is a constantly moving target so its very hard
for a non-dev to follow it exactly, and the only reason to is for the
latest-greatest hardware support, e.g. a wireless NIC that came out last
week. For more normal users, there are snapshots made of -current (so
that it doesn't change while you are downloading it) to allow an
install. For mere mortals, or those who don't need the latest hardware,
there's a release made every 6 months.

NetBSD base is very basic but then there's not much difference between
what's in base and what's in pkgsrc from a security perspective. So a
base NetBSD install plus a wm and Mozilla is certainly lean.

OpenBSD provides a fairly complete OS + apps in base, all to the same
high standard of security audit and includes most common server apps
(e.g. apache, ftp, ssh, npt, lpd, sendmail, etc), so the base is a bit
bigger. You could probably take OpenBSD base, add a nicer wm and
Mozilla and fit in 512 MB. The downside at the moment is that they
don't have the human resources to keep all the packages up-to-date re
security updates from upstrem for the -stable release. I think they
have the source ports updated but you have to run the build script on
your own machine. If you want binary fixes, you have to run -current or
a recent -snapshot.

Anyway, I've got debian on my big box, and for the moment its
shoe-horned onto my P-II. Lenny may change this depending on how
resourse-piggish it gets.

There is one big catch, you only usually get 10 meg links. Also the
devices are hard to find, I know the one I got (which I am not using
because it didn't work in the UK!), is 10 meg, but links to the
 computer via USB.

What's wrong with USB? USB performs as good as 100Mbit Ethernet, generally.

Anyway, people have been using DSL technologies on phone wires for quite
some time.

Sometimes I do, as a matter of fact, but I feel more comfortable with C++.

You're not going to convince a numericist to give up compiled

I'm not going to try. Well, not much... Since all the functions
are already written in a compiled language, what you're really doing
  is using Python as stitching.

Like I said before, Python and Octave are interpreted languages with
a good numerical slant, but you really get a slowdown from the
interpreter itself. Tricks like vectorisation can sometimes work
around the slowdown, but sometimes code just isn't easily lent to
vectorisation. This is why Octave also provides its C++ libraries for
code that you just can't figure out how to vectorise when the
interpreter is slowing you down. The same remarks apply to Numpy.

I personally reserve interpreted languages for profiling or quickly
testing out ideas, but once I need to actually implement my ideas,
it's C++ (or sometimes, Fortran).

Debian-User To UseNet Reliability?

2008-05-09 Thread Doug Mitton

Hi all;

I have been following Debian User for a long time now, via the UseNet
group. Lately I have replied to an issue or 2 (via the mailing list) but
not all responses seem to make it to the UseNet.

Are there any others who access it this way and have you noticed missing
posts ... or is this possibly a problem with my usenet server?

TIA!

(This is such a high volume mailing list that the UseNet access is a nice
alternative to a full mailbox all the time.)

how to create accounts to connect as for windows server (I
 believe that the active directory).

As it has already been said, your question is not copletely clear.

If you want that your debian machine be part of a windows active
directory domain, read samba documantation (go to /usr/share/doc/samba*
afrer a apt-get install samba-doc). You might also do a google search
for samba active directory.

After having read the documentation, with apt-cache search samba you
can see all debian packages related to samba. One example:

$ apt-cache search samba pam
lg-issue105 - Issue 105 of the Linux Gazette.
ldapscripts - Add and remove user and groups (stored in a ldap directory)
libpam-smbpass - pluggable authentication module for SMB/CIFS password database
samba - a LanManager-like file and printer server for Unix
libpam-mount - PAM module that can mount volumes for a user session

so you might want to configure pam (which is used in most cases to
authenticate users in GNU/linux) to use a SMB/CIFS or a ldap server.

If the question is how to create debian users, its pretty standard unix.
use adduser or useradd according to your taste. Install the

I'm certain they would. I should probably look into BSD and see if my

and VMS, unlike unix, since the beginning was planned with solid
security in mind. In the times where classification into A,B,C,D
security made sense, there were VMS B-certified machines (the maximum
level, except for the lack of a formal mathemetical proof of that level
of security). And Digital never had to hide the code from the eyes of
the world, so that everybody could know the quality of the code (any
reference to proprietary software widely used today, and which is not of
the same level of quality as VMS, is purely wanted).

But the point of the original phrase probably is: the most stable and
secure OS available among the ones that whoever is speaking is able to
use to get the work done.

For example, if no realtime version of VMS exists (and I suspect that it
does not exists), qnx should be preferred to VMS for realtime tasks
(anyone producing atomic enegy @home?)
