PermitRootLogin no AllowUsers user1 user2 user2 user4 [...]
In /etc/fstab yesterday, I re-assigned the drive letters to satisfy my sense of correctness. Previously, the cdrom was /dev/hdb but I swapped that over to /dev/hdc and made /dev/hdc1 into /dev/hdb1. However that had no impact yesterday - it would still boot into the administrative shell (or however it is called when the boot sequence is interrupted). Perhaps it just needed one more boot to write something and then it was fixed. But the old drive mapping with the cdrom on /dev/hdb had been fine for the last year in the other machine. ath5k-based card not working
I have a card that seems to be driven by the ath5k module. The lspci -n line corresponding to it is: 03:00.0 0200: 168c:001c (rev 01) The driver creates two interfaces, wmaster0 and wlan0. If I execute ifconfig wlan0 up and then try to scan there is no output, and I know there are multiple APs in range. If I set my AP info on it, it does not associate. Besides: what are, in general with a Debian upgrade, the proper commands? `apt-get update' and `apt-get dist-upgrade' or instead full-upgrade or safe-upgrade? Excuse so many questions. Thanks Rodolfo Rodolfo, If I recall correctly, you would, after the boot of the cd type linux expert in order to have the choice of installing Sid from the start. However, from time to time, I have had issues with that method. I wrote up a (very poorly written) howto to upgrade to Sid. You can find it here: www.damtek.com on the left side is a link titled Installing Debian. Click on that link, it will tell you how to go from stable to testing. I would not use a testing net-install image as I have also had issues with those in the past. I.e. They break from time to time and you as a newbie installing would not know the difference between an installer break and a machine issue and might well chase your tail for hours trying to fix a machine that was not broken. Yes, the net-installer should have PPP software that you need, however, it has been years since I have had to use it so I am unable to advise you there. I would also deviate from my own howto in that I would only install the base system (When you get to the ncurses select software to install do NOT select anything (except laptop, if you have a laptop). Deselect desktop and anything else selected (except laptop, if you have a laptop). This will save you HOURS of downloading via a phone line and give you a system that you can then upgrade to Sid. Once you reboot from the install, log in as root and nano /etc/apt/sources.list to edit your sources to point them to Sid. Keep in mind, the sources listed in my howto work well for me as a person in the US. All you would need to do is modify yours by replacing stable (or etch) with sid or unstable and commenting out anything about security updates (put a # in front of the line). Once you have upgraded from stable to testing, from testing to sid (and yes, I recommend not jumping from stable to sid directly) or if the testing install works for you, from testing to sid, then you should re-run the additional software tool by running as root tasksel. You would then select things such as Desktop to install additional useful components. After that, follow the guide on a perfect desktop listed in my howto. The reason for this deviation is, again, because of your limited bandwidth, no need to download all that stuff, only to have it upgraded and downloaded again and again. I hope this helps. -- Damon L. home network problem - router is smarter than me
Hi, What follows is a very naive question regarding home networking. Any tips, even a pointer the most appropriate documentation, would be very helpful. I'd like to setup my desktop as a backup machine for my laptop. However, I don't understand how my router works. I can access the router by browsing to 192.168.2.1, and under the devices I see entries for both computers, but the hostname and domainname for each is 'unknown'. When apache is configured to listen to all addresses, I can browse webpages on the desktop from the laptop by entering the IP address (192.168.2.11), but not the name (etch.mynetwork). On the desktop I can ssh to the desktop (ie., ssh to itself) with ssh etch.mynetwork, but I can't connect from the laptop to the desktop: tyler- ssh etch.mynetwork ssh: etch.mynetwork: Name or service not known tyler- ssh 192.168.2.11 ssh: connect to host 192.168.2.11 port 22: Connection refused I think I have to have something in the hosts file, but since the IP addresses are dynamically allocated, I don't know what I should do. I also don't know if there's a problem with the way my router is set, or why the desktop refuses to connect to the laptop via ssh. My router is a Siemens Speedstream 6520 and I'm running Lenny on both machines. Access to the internet is fine for both machines. When my wife connects to the same router via wireless from her laptop (running XP) it shows up on the router page, and both the hostname and domainname are correctly identified. Debian server NOT responding to SYN packets (randomly)
Hi Folks, I am seeing some extremely strange behavior between my front end webserver (Sun Java Web Server V7.0U1) on Solaris 10 and a JBoss Server (JBoss 4.2.2) on a Debian box). Every once in a while, the web server will have a connection time out with the jboss server (which is part of a 3 machine pool) and the webserver will rightfully shunt that server's load over to one of the other jboss servers, however...this session switching forces our users to have to reauthenticate, as the session data is not shared between jboss machines. The web server will then continue to redirect all traffic for the down web server until the health check thread runs again on the web server and it sees that the jboss server is not really down. Well, after much searching, we have discovered that on those connections that time out, there is no response from the jboss server to the SYN packet sent from the web server!!! We see it leave the webserver (via snoop) and see it arrive on the jboss server (via tcpdump), but no SYNC/ACK is ever returned! During a good conversation we see all the appropriate handshaking and data transfer just as we'd suspect. Has anyone else here ever run into this situation? I did look at the individual SYN packets, and there is no difference between a good SYN and a bad SYN...they look the same. In a wordI need HELP! Thanks in advance! -Emmett
