What should be changed to allow xfsm-shutdown-helper

  Have you read '/usr/share/doc/xfce4-session/README.Debian'?

Managing shutdown
-

There are three ways to enable user to shutdown the computer from Xfce:

 - use sudo, and allow user to run /usr/sbin/xfsm-shutdown-helper in
   sudoers
 - use dbus and hal
   - hal and dbus should be installed, up and running
   - user should be in powerdev group
 - use policykit and a compatible login manager (gdm is known to work)
=== END QUOTE ===

Personally, I switched to the hal/dbus method after having used the
'sudo' method for a while. Both worked fine, but I decided that
adding myself to the "powerdev" group made more sense to me than
needing to grant myself root permissions just to power off. Opinions
will vary, of course -- the rest of the Linux world seems to be much
less suspicious of things like 'su' and 'sudo' than myself.

Run something like `/etc/init.d/postgresql-8.3 restart` as root and tell

AFAIU USB hard drives are exactly like IDE hard drives with just an
USB interface. I am assuming that just having ext3 would be fine
for USB hard drives?

Thanks

I do blog at http://blogs.koolwal.net/

USB hard drives don't have the problem that flash drives do. They
are just IDE hard drives with a USB to IDE adapter, so you can write
to the same block as many times as you like and not wear it out.

In case it's not clear, the problem with using flash (whether USB or
CF) is that the individual transistors used to store the bits wear
out after a limited number of writes. That number is variously
reported as being as low as 10,000, or as much as 1,000,000 writes
per transistor. It's been improving over time as the technology
matures, and recent thumb drives are also larger, so a 16GB thumb
drive is probably good for several million writes spread out across
the entire device, assuming the adaptation layer in the drive is
doing its job.

If you're using CF instead of USB drives, you don't have the USB
adaptation layer to spread out the writes. So JFFS2, or something
like it, will be desirable for them. But outside of the embedded
computing world, using CF directly without an intervening adapter is
rare.

I can't help you with a HOW-TO for installing to JFFS2. But I
understand there is an "embedded Debian" mailing list ("Embeddian"?
maybe).

init problems

2009-01-28 Thread Maria McKinley
I have a machine that I am attempting to boot over the network. I have
compiled a kernel for it, Debian Lenny Linux version 2.6.26, with nfs
file system and root file system support. For a complete rundown on how
I have created the setup, please see:

http://www.shadlen.org/~maria/pmwiki/Work/Gpxe

Things work well up until it is time to mount the file system from
fstab. The mount is not happening because statd is never started, and
statd is not starting because portmap is not starting. I suspect it is
related to this bug:

http://groups.google.com/group/linux.debian.bugs.dist/browse_thread/thread/fe95c99e1dbc5aa1

In that discussion some people say that portmap 6.0.9 fixes this for
them, but this is the version of portmap I am using, and it has not
fixed it. I have posted to the bug discussion, although weirdly it seems
to have posted my message as a new thread. What I am wondering is if
anyone has any other ideas of things to try to get this to work. I did
try the suggestion of adding ASYNCMOUNTNFS=no to /etc/default/rcS, to no
avail.

thanks,
maria

Update: I tried installing an earlier version of portmap (etch 5-26),
and this helped moderately. I now have portmap running, but statd still
did not start up. It complains that: Opening /var/run/rpc.statd.pid
failed: Read-only file system. Well, duh, that is why I am trying to get
statd running! Any way I can start statd without a pid until I get the
root file system mounted rw? Or something else to try?

I definitely did this sometimes. Not recently though. I will observe the

Yep, I found that confusing too. What _I_ was looking for, though
(apologies for the thread hijack), was a way to say: "Don't remove those
unused packages at this time".

Is there an easy way to do that?

My context was that I needed to add a package to a machine that I'm not
the primary admin for, and didn't want to go removing (or
unmarking-auto) packages from a machine I don't fully understand the
purpose of.

gdebi reporting swedish characters wrong?

2009-01-28 Thread Andreas Ronnquist
Hi

I have created a debian package of a program I am developing, all working fine.
I make the debian control using SciTE, entering my name as maintainer - but
then using gdebi-gtk to look on the built package I am listed with the swedish
characters wrong - how come? Using the simple editor mousepad does also list my
surname the right way in the control file just as SciTE.

A friend of mine using Ubuntu lists it correctly with the version of gdebi he
got, so it seems as I've got it right in the control file after all, and gdebi
is at fault.

Any ideas to why this is?

This is on a fully up to date Lenny machine, using XFCE as desktop.

I find the idea that knowing 'sufficient basics' is a requirement to
be able to help others. Most of the times, it is simple configuration
file changes that might be enough to get a software working. One does
not need 'sufficient basics' to tell someone else what configuration
changes he made.

Of course, the person taking the advice might sometimes need
'sufficient basics' to be sure whether that the configuration changes
he would be doing on the advice of someone else, does not turn out to
be fatal or deletes important files or simply grant some wings to the
computer that would fly away from the house.

I have received a lot of help from experts and non-experts and I would
like all the advice flowing in when I face issues.

The subtext of that statement is the assumption that you are aware
that aptitude always *removes* packages which are not required (unless
you have disabled that). Since you're the second person to make this
mistake, I probably need to fix that text in the manpage.

100% agree with you - guess I shouldn't type in a hurry. I have used it
and it worked just fine. I switched to the iptables solution because we
were developing our own firewall script at the time and it made sense to
incorporate it and have one less security package to configure and worry
about. What I liked about the iptables solution was that it cut off the
hacker after a predetermined number of attempts rather than letting the
attacks mount and then then pick it up from a log-file scan. However
fail2ban can also block at the tcpwrappers level so is a bit more
flexible on how it blocks.

For those interested another popular script is at:

apt-cache show ivman
daemon to auto-mount and manage media devices
ivman is a daemon that acts as a policy agent on top of HAL. It
listens to HAL events and reacts with user-configurable
actions. Currently it supports automount of new media and
hot-plugged devices, autorun, autoplay for CDs and DVDs, and
automatic camera management.

From "man aptitude"

--purge-unused
Purge packages that are no longer required by any installed
package. This is equivalent to passing “-o Aptitude::Purge-Unused=true”
as a command-line argument.

English is not my first language and I understand the above that it
removes packages which are no more required. And this is what the OP

I think I get it now..
you have to change $EXT to NEW:
/sbin/iptables -A ssh-connection -i NEW -p tcp --dport 22 -m recent

The KDE 4 in experimental is in the process of being updated to 4.2,
and so you may find odd bits missing for the next day or so, but it will
catch up quite soon. So if you are not in a blinding hurry (in which case
try the archive) wait until it does install and you will have the latest and
greatest version to play with.

Grr! Sound problems again

2009-01-28 Thread Jan Willem Stumpel
About a year and a half ago, after a lot of experimentation, I
finally got sound working OK on my Debian Sid system. The solution
turned out to be quite simple. To save others the same trouble, I
put up a kind of "sound instruction" on my website
(http://www.jw-stumpel.nl/dmix.html).

But something must have changed in Sid recently, because sound has
become unreliable again. After I visit a sound-using site like
youtube (let's call this "online sound"), sound will no longer be
heard when playing a stored avi file with gmplayer, for instance
("offline sound"). To play offline sounds I have to kill iceweasel
first (or call /etc/init.d/alsasound restart, which kills
iceweasel as a side effect..).

Well, I know this is Sid, which has this tendency of breaking
things which work by "fixing" them. But normally these things get
"re-fixed" after a few days. This new sound problem has now been
going on for a few weeks. I cannot file a bug report about it
because I have no way to know which program causes the problem.
Any help appreciated.

Regards, Jan

I believe g-t maps scroll actions to and keys. Try mapping

activated when you use the scroll button.

This feature is not present in the etch version of g-t. Must have been

Hi,

While it's true that installing ssh is as simple as using aptitude, you

http://www.howtoforge.com/set-up-ssh-with-public-key-authentication-debian-etch

If you use Putty on a windows client:

You can find many other tutorials regarding different aspects of the ssh

There are plenty of good notes, not all Debian specific but the
configuration is similar:

General setup
http://www.debianhelp.co.uk/ssh.htm
http://linuxmafia.com/pub/linux/suse-linux-internals/chapter13.html

Notes on security
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AdvancedOpenSSH

The webmin module for SSH is very good and might help you understand
what you are doing better.

If you set up a home ssh server and expose it to the internet you will
get brute force password break in attempts so make sure you restrict who
can log in very tightly and deny root login access as a minimum. We also
block connections to our SSH port if someone connects more than a few
times in a ten minute period.
