Paul Gallaway wrote: snip To summarize you would first create a mount point and then do the mount manually. From there you can edit the real fstab and do some other things using chroot etc. I did this recently on an install to complete a grub install that was failing by invoking aptitude and update-grub with chroot from within the busybox shell provided by the installer. Really opened my eyes to what one could do with busybox as I'd never had a need before! Just to be totally sure of what you're saying, I do the above when thrown into a shell after it fails to find the root file system, is that correct? I'm not sure how it could find the root file system, that is, /dev/hda1, with a mount command but not in the init script. I understand what you're saying but up to now, using the root=UUID=xx does not work but I have not done that when I have ALSO changed the fstab designation to the UUID. I can try that but I'll have to check on the syntax for specifying UUID in the fstab file. Hadn't thought of passing the UUID as a boot option. Not sure that the fstab would be any better/different. I've tried both. I edit the fstab while running 2.6.26 so it's a proper error and reboot with the UUID spec in fstab instead of /dev/sda1 or /dev/hda1 and I still get the same result: it doesn't find the root file system. What's funny is that Sidux, using 2.6.30 finds the hard drive with no problem at /dev/sda1 and yet Squeeze with 2.6.30 can't find it there. The only kernel-specific driver I'm using now is for my ancient webcam, gspca, which is certainly not critical for the kernel to function normally. It remains a mystery. cheers, Maybe purge the linux-image and reinstall? Perhaps something went wrong on install? I've done that once already, to no effect. (only removing though, I can try purging to remove any garbage from the earlier 2.6.30 install. I'm starting to think that waiting is the best option. What do you think about this idea? I for a person think this could be a good idea for providing something like a physical support network for Linux. Thanks for your critique in advance! Sincerely, Patrick Holthuizen Great Idea, Now and then i shop for custom made computers and loose components and i usually go to the small pc shops (rotterdam) that build there own systems and i have discussed with them why they don't sell any Linux pre-installed computers, besides the couple of euro's they can spare on the Linux license for a home desktop, i figured the money could be worth it for them in the office suite's and something like ebox for small company networks. The main reason they don't do it is because of support, not that they can provide any software support themselves for MS, but at least they have somebody to blame (MS) if things go wrong and there are plenty of people who provide support for it. I think your idea could work out well if you can come up with a standard desktop/server combination and a network of small retail stores that are willing to join once they know that they are backed up by reliable local support. The main problem will be that you will need a organized network of admins that do things the same standardized way, i think i don't have to point out to you what an endless discussion that will be ;) Randall -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: Lenny RAID+LVM Lilo/Grub Error
As you say, there some solutions, e.g., booting off a teeny-tiny flash SSD, but nothing really satisfactory. Having /boot on a RAID 1 partition is not really any more satisfactory than that, although it does avoid a separate device. At one time, I would have booted from floppy, but that is no longer practical. A boot CD? Not really easily done, but possible. (The trick would be automating the process. Don't want to require someone to always be there to hit two arrow keys and Enter, I expect.) Maybe IDE- CF adapter and a 256Mb CF card would do for /boot, as it doesn't need to be very big. Should be possible? I might give this some consideration myself and then have two RAID5 arrays (one for media, one for system/home with LVM perhaps). Resource management scheduling tool recomendation
Hi there, there is single PC. PC is used for testing. It tests external devices. Test requires: - external device to be tested - test to be executed - one or more PCI boards Currently it is done like that: #!/bin/bash test.sh test_01 device_01 test.sh test_02 device_01 test.sh test_03 device_01 test.sh test_01 device_02 test.sh test_02 device_02 [...] (Test itself knows how many boards does it need) It is suboptimal, as some tests utilize only one board and other tests, which could utilize another board(s) are simply waiting for test to finish. I would like to do it another way instead: - [BEGIN] insert tests into pool - [UNTIL END] choose from pool test, which can be run now (device and PCI boards required are not occupied) and run it, then release board and device I could automate it using some locking scheme (flock or something), but maybe there's something simplier. A tool, which would allow me to define resources and tasks, and then take care of executing them. I have just noticed gridengine, but it seems to be too heavy for that purpose. Installing onto an old laptop
I have an old generic laptop which has Slackware 10.1 installed. It has access to the Internet as well as to a small LAN. The machine it is connected via a hub to is my main desktop/ workstation which runs Debian testing. The CD-ROM drive in the laptop does not work. This is a hardware issue, so installation via CD is not feasible. The laptop does have a couple of USB drive sockets, but I don't think that the BIOS is sufficiently modern to boot from a USB drive (the laptop was bought circa 2002 from a company that has since gone belly up). What is the best method for getting this laptop up and running in the 21st Century with Debian testing? Thanks for any ideas/ suggestions.
